Former Manchester United and Everton keeper Howard was on the ballot for this honour for the first time and received 46 of 48 votes (95.8%) from the player select committee. The stopper made 121 appearances for the U.S. men's national team from 2002-17 and was first-choice between the sticks at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

After being told of the news live on air for NBC's Premier League coverage, he said: "When you play football, you try and for the love and play for the glory, and hopefully along the way you do some things."

THE BIG PICTURE

Howard will go down as one of America's greatest-ever goalkeepers. Not many from his country have starred in the Premier League but he has done that. Josh McKinney, captain of the U.S. seven-a-side Paralympic team, was also elected to the Hall of Fame. A player must appear on 50% or more of ballots to be elected and Howard, 52, passed with flying colours.

Kaka, Woodgate & Real Madrid's 15 worst signings of all time

With the Blancos poised to get rid of €31.5 million flop Danilo, Goal looks back at other players who failed dismally at the Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid have never been afraid to splash the cash. This, after all, is a club responsible for half of the eight most expensive transfers of all time.

However, the capital club haven't always spent their money wisely. Indeed, for every Cristiano Ronaldo or Sergio Ramos, there's a Kaka or Jonathan Woodgate.

Below, Goal runs through the worst transfers that Real have ever made…

Getty ImagesNICOLAS ANELKA | From Arsenal | €34.5m | 2009

Real took a massive gamble when they signed a talented but temperamental French striker who had already earned himself the nickname ' Le Sulk ' in the English press. It did not pay off. Nicolas Anelka lasted just one season in Spain – but it was an eventful campaign.

His first goal came in the Clasico, while he netted twice in the Champions League semi-finals against Bayern Munich. However, there were just seven goals altogether, not least due to the fact that the forward was suspended for 45 days at one point for refusing to train, with Anelka accusing his Spanish employers of treating him "like a dog".

"Something does not turn around properly in his head," Real president Lorenzo Sanz countered, shortly before selling his  to PSG.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesELVIR BALJIC | From Fenerbahce | €26m | 1999

Real have John Toshack to blame for the waste of money that was Elvir Baljic, as it was the Welshman had been impressed by the Bosnian during his time working in Turkey and, consequently, persuaded Real president to pay a shockingly large fee for the forward.

Baljic's hopes of making an impact in Spain were hardly helped by a knee injury shortly after his arrival but even when fit, he did not look like he belonged at the highest level and he was loaned back to Fenerbahce after just one season, and one goal, in La Liga. He later mused: "It doesn't hurt me to see media listing me among Real's biggest flops; I don't see myself that way." Unfortunately, Real's fans do.

Getty ImagesANTONIO CASSANO | From Roma | €5m | 2006

The fee may have been small but Antonio Cassano was a colossal waste of money. His goal return was dismal (just one in seven appearances), his attitude dreadful and his diet even worse.

"In Madrid, I had a friend who was a hotel waiter," the enigmatic Italian later revealed. "His job was to bring me three or four pastries after I had sex. He would bring the pastries up the stairs, I would escort the woman to him and we would make an exchange: he would take the girl and I would take the pastries. Sex and then food, a perfect night."

Getty ImagesDANILO | From Porto | €31.5m | 2015

Danilo has openly admitted that it is difficult to deal with the amount of scrutiny players are subjected to by the media in Madrid. "An error, no matter how small, goes viral," he lamented. "A mistake becomes very great even if it is small. But, of course, when you do something good, it is also very great."

Unfortunately, the Brazilian has rarely done anything good since joining from Porto two years ago – he played every minute of every defeat Real suffered during the 2015-16 campaign – and is now set to be sold, with both Chelsea and Juventus inexplicably interested in signing Dani Carvajal's understudy.

Nashville advanced to the round of 32 in the US Open Cup with a 1-0 victory over lower-league opponent San Antonio on Thursday.

Prior to that, NSC drew 1-1 with Los Angeles FC and is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, only a point ahead of the pursuing pack in the race for the final automatic playoff position.

Saturday's hosts, who have won seven of their past eight home games in all competitions, will be hoping for another positive outcome in front of their fans.

Unlike Nashville, Atlanta was unable to advance to the next round of the US Open Cup after a 2-1 loss to Memphis at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

This came on the back of a 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire, which moved the Five Stripes into third place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind division leaders New England Revolution.

After conceding nine goals in their last three away games, Saturday's visitors will need to strengthen their defence if they are to earn their first victory on the road since March 11.

Nicolas Jackson is ready to be Chelsea's main man! Five things we learned as the Blues' summer signing scores again in Newcastle draw

As he maintains his good pre-season form, the ex-Villarreal star is looking increasingly like the man to lead the line for Mauricio Pochettino's side

Much has been made of Chelsea's striker hunt this year, with a number of big names linked, but they might just have bought the right man already. Nicolas Jackson was once again impressive for the Blues, scoring the opener and proving a constant menace in an otherwise drab 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

The former Villarreal man continued his good run of form, opening the scoring inside 15 minutes, scampering beyond the Newcastle backline and finishing off a neat pass from Ian Maatsen. Chelsea could've had a second shortly after, but Christopher Nkunku dragged his effort just wide of the post.

Newcastle levelled things right before the break, with former Atlanta United winger Miguel Almiron grabbing a goal at his former home.

The second half was a markedly tighter affair. Jackson was removed, while Maatsen only lasted a further 20 minutes. Nkunku made things interesting, though, and challenged Nick Pope on a handful of occasions. A diving stop from the England goalkeeper in the 93rd minute ensured that Newcastle would hang on.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium…

Nico Jackson… again!

How long have Chelsea needed this? The Blues haven't really had a reliable striker since Diego Costa, with a series of imperfect fits and promising players all struggling to inherit the central role in the side. It's very early days, but Jackson looks like he might just be able to make it work.

He was up for it from the first minute on Wednesday. The former Villarreal man was caught offside while trying to dart beyond the Newcastle defence early on. But five minutes later, he timed his run to perfection, receiving a pass in stride and putting his side 1-0 ahead.

There was more to his performance than just goals, though. Jackson never stopped moving and got Fabian Schar booked after forcing the centre-back into a rash challenge. He also almost grabbed himself an assist after a fine piece of work on the right wing, too. These are small moments, but ones Chelsea fans can get excited about. Jackson could be the solution to a problem they've had for years.

AdvertisementReece James is back

Injury-prone right-back Reece James finally returned to training last week, and was thrust into the line up almost immediately here. The results were predictably mixed. At times, James was near his best, winning individual duels and hitting a series of cross-field balls.

But there were also some weaknesses. He was caught out of position on occasion and played the odd loose pass. This is all to be expected, though, from a player who hasn't been on the pitch for nearly four months — and missed half of last season.

Chelsea look a much-changed side this year, and the somehow James will be one of the most experienced members of the squad at just 23. If he can stay fit, and work his way back to form, the Blues will once again have one of the league's best full-backs at their disposal.

What to make of Mudryk?

Since arriving from Shaktar Donetsk in January, Mykhailo Mudryk has shown flashes, but has done little to suggest that he was worth the immense £89 million ($110m) price they paid for him. This pre-season, though, there are signs that he might just work out. His darting runs have come with smart passes. His mazy dribbles have finished with a shot.

These are small things, but they are also immense improvements for a player that looked lost a few months ago. And there was a lot to like here, too. He tortured Kieran Trippier for 45 minutes, and linked up well with Nkunku and Jackson.

There is a long way to go for the Ukrainian. He will undoubtedly need more time to develop, and the minutes will only help. For now, though, the signs are promising.

Miggy enjoys his homecoming

Almiron has had a bit of a mixed time at Newcastle, but finally made good on his potential last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals. And he returned to Atlanta in style, scoring the equaliser and putting in a solid performance on the right. He made life difficult for a rattled Marc Cucurella, who couldn't deal with his trickery or movement on the evening.

The Paraguayan won't have it easy this season. Newcastle are bringing in reinforcements to the side, and he will likely have to battle for his spot. Every pre-season game counts, then, and this was an immensely promising one for a fan favourite.

13 fun facts about Joshua Kimmich

Everything you need to know about Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich.

Joshua Kimmich is a professional football player from Germany who is widely recognized for his versatility, technical ability, and tactical intelligence. Born on February 8, 1995, in Rottweil, Germany, Kimmich has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

Kimmich began his youth career at VfB Bosingen before joining the youth academy of VfB Stuttgart. In 2013, he signed a contract with RB Leipzig, where he made his professional debut in the 2. Bundesliga. Kimmich's impressive performances attracted the attention of Bayern Munich, and in the summer of 2015, he joined the German giants.

At Bayern Munich, Kimmich quickly made a name for himself with his exceptional work rate, technical skills, and versatility. He initially played as a right-back but gradually transitioned into a central midfield role. Kimmich's ability to read the game and make precise passes earned him comparisons to former Bayern captain Philipp Lahm.

Kimmich's intelligence and adaptability have made him a key player for both Bayern Munich and the German national team. He has won numerous domestic and international titles throughout his career. With Bayern Munich, he has won multiple Bundesliga titles, DFB-Pokal trophies, and the UEFA Champions League. He was also instrumental in Germany's victory at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Individually, Kimmich has received several accolades, including being named in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season and the FIFPro World XI. He has also been nominated for the FIFA FIFPro World XI and the UEFA Team of the Year. In addition, he has been recognized as the German Footballer of the Year.

Here are 13 fun facts about Joshua Kimmich you need to know.

Started his career with Gnabry and Werner

Kimmich was a part of VfB Stuttgart's highly renowned academy, where he spent a considerable amount of his youth career. At Stuttgart, he was teammates with future national side colleagues Timo Werner and Serge Gnabry.

While he never reunited with Werner at RB Leipzig, with the forward joining the club a year after Kimmich left, he met Gnabry again at Bayern Munich when the former Arsenal winger joined in 2018.

AdvertisementWas not considered good enough at Stuttgart

While he rose through the academy levels during his early years at Stuttgart, the senior staff did not consider him good enough to even make it to the club's reserves squad. "'You're not good enough, your body is not strong enough,' the coaches told me, adding that I needed another year with the youth team," said Kimmich in an interview regarding his early playing days.

However, he did not let their criticism get to him and used it as motivation to move on and excel elsewhere. Coincidentally, the coach who scouted him for VfB Stuttgart also happened to move to RB Leipzig, who wasted no time in signing Kimmich, and as they say, the rest is history.

Pep Guardiola chose him

While the coaches at VfB Stuttgart may not have recognised the 2020 Champions League winner's potential, one Pep Guardiola who was the manager of Bayern Munich in 2015 saw the talent stored within Kimmich.

Midway through Kimmich's first season in 2. Bundesliga, Guardiola, and the midfielder had a meeting where the Spanish coach immediately convinced him to join Bayern Munich. While the former Barcelona manager left for Manchester City in 2016, he still remains a great influence on the player.

Has won the Bundesliga every season

Since making his Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich in 2015-16, Kimmich has won the league title in each of his eight seasons so far, making him a legend in German football at the ripe age of 28.

The closest Kimmich's league streak came to being stopped was during the 2022-23 season when Bayern Munich almost lost the title to rivals Borrusia Dortmund until a last-minute winner from midfielder Jamal Musiala against FC Koln on the last matchday.

Javeria ton seals Pakistan's highest chase

Javeria Khan’s maiden ODI century was the catalyst for Pakistan women completing their highest chase in ODI history

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jan-2015
ScorecardJaveria Khan struck her first ODI century•Getty ImagesJaveria Khan’s maiden ODI century was the catalyst for Pakistan women completing their highest chase in ODI history. An unbeaten 133 off 141 balls helped hunt down the target of 243 with 16 balls and seven wickets to spare in Sharjah to complete a series whitewash. She sounded intent with a couple of fours in the fourth over, and was aggressive in collecting singles and twos when the boundaries were sparse. The required run-rate was never allowed to breach five in the first 18 overs despite the loss of opener Marina Iqbal. And when it tipped to 5.17, Javeria struck twin fours in the 22nd over to bring up her fifty in 64 balls and take control again. Then came a middle-order wobble when Shashikala Siriwardene took two wickets in successive overs, including Bismah Maroof who had been party to a 65-run second-wicket stand with Javeria.Pakistan were 118 for 3, with another 125 needed in the remaining 144 balls. Out walked captain Sana Mir, who struck a brisk half-century, and ended Sri Lanka’s hopes of a fightback. Javeria had begun their eventually unbeaten 127-run partnership with two fours in two overs and together they managed to keep a potentially tricky asking-rate in check. Fittingly, Javeria sealed the chase with her 12th four.Sri Lanka might well have contemplated a consolation win after failing to overhaul a target of 139 in the previous ODI. Captain Chamari Atapattu struck 99 off 109 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes to give the structure they had lacked on Sunday. After a sedate start – 40 runs in 10 overs – she slammed medium-pacer Kainat Imtiaz for a four and six to start the 11th. Sadia Yousuf, the left-arm spinner, was launched over the midwicket boundary and then struck for successive fours through the covers in the 23rd over to further Sri Lanka’s momentum despite the loss of Prasadani Weerakkody for 32 in between.Having kept a strike-rate of nearly a run-a-ball for a majority of her innings, Atapattu was caught by Javeria in the covers off seamer Asmavia Iqbal’s bowling in the 39th over and Dilani Manodara followed her captain inside in the next. Siriwardene produced a 28-ball 39 to lift Sri Lanka to 242, but it wasn’t quite enough to prevent a 3-0 scoreline.

Cameron White delivers South Australia home final

South Australia will host their first Sheffield Shield final in 20 years after a Cameron White rearguard secured Victoria the most unlikely of draws to foil New South Wales

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Mar-2016
Scorecard Nathan Lyon finished with a match haul of five wickets•Getty ImagesSouth Australia will host their first Sheffield Shield final in 20 years after a Cameron White rearguard secured the most unlikely of draws to foil New South Wales in the last match of the regular season at Traeger Park in Alice Springs.Victoria faded in the second half of the season to surrender a vast lead at the top of the Shield table to a fast finishing SA, but White’s performance – with help from Scott Boland – denied NSW their own home final, after the Blues seemed certain winners early on the final day.White, who has spent time out of the Victoria side over the past two seasons as his domestic career seemed to be winding down, played the most stubborn of innings. This meant Victoria were lifted out of a deep hole, which had worsened from the unpromising overnight score of 3 for 20.When Victoria captain Matthew Wade was pinned lbw by Nathan Lyon at 5 for 56, White and the lower order were left with the faint hope of surviving no fewer than 74.2 overs to secure a draw and a place in the final. However White was not disheartened, and a stand of 62 in 24 overs with Dan Christian took the Bushrangers somewhat closer before the allrounder fell to Lyon’s wiles. The tall paceman Chris Tremain then offered staunch support for a further 20 overs, and took Victoria to tea with four precious wickets in hand.A second new ball loomed on resumption, and Trent Copeland used it effectively, coaxing Tremain to drag the first delivery he faced after the interval onto the stumps. From that position the Blues looked to be favourites, but Boland steadied after a nervy start to provide vital support as White proved more or less impassable at the other end.NSW tried no fewer than seven bowlers including the captain Nic Maddinson and Ed Cowan, but could not find a way to disturb White’s concentration, nor his sturdily straight bat.Boland’s sense of security grew, and in the closing overs White even allowed himself the extravagance of a late flurry to reach a most deserved hundred. Having led the Shield table for most of the season, the Bushrangers ultimately stumbled over the line.Their reward will be a final match up against a young SA team, that has confounded expectations plenty of times already this season, and now have the advantage of needing only a draw to secure the Shield, as they did in 1996 by a mere one wicket against Western Australia.

How should Mexico line up against Argentina? El Tri desperate for striker production at World Cup

GOAL breaks down the line-up Mexico's Gerardo "Tata" Martino should pick against Argentina in a key World Cup bout on Saturday.

Mexico have reached the knockout stage in seven consecutiveWorld Cup tournaments, and with a fan base that always travels well, El Tri traditionally know how to make their mark.

But on current form, they are at risk of being dumped from the competition earlier than they have in more than 30 years.

Two finals defeats to the United States last summer and friendly losses to Paraguay and Sweden in the run-up to the World Cup were a bad omen. A 0-0 draw with Poland to begin their Qatar campaign didn't inspire much hope.

Martino, a manager under immense pressure, must now make quick adjustments to wake up an attack that didn't create enough against Poland, while ensuring a defence bailed out by Guillermo Ochoa's penalty heroics doesn't get ripped apart by an angry Argentina team looking to bounce back from a loss to Saudi Arabia.

Here's how Mexico should approach the Albiceleste – including Martino's decision at striker with Raul Jimenez in an injury-related rut and Henry Martin also struggling:

Getty ImagesGK: Guillermo Ochoa

No doubts here. Ochoa is the man – and a leading face of the national team from a global perspective, having shined so bright at the World Cup before and then again this week against Poland.

This is likely the final World Cup appearance for the 37-year-old, who now plays in Liga MX for America. No matter. When/if Mexico are knocked out, he'll still go down as a king.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLB: Jesus Gallardo

Gallardo started every match at the 2018 World Cup, but he'll be most remembered as the unwanted answer to a trivia question: Who received the fastest yellow card in World Cup history? The full-back was booked in 13 seconds in El Tri's loss to Sweden.

Against Poland, the 28-year-old, who plays club football at Monterrey, made a good start in changing the narrative; he might have been the best field player for his team in the 2022 tournament opener and is locked into his starting spot.

A clash with Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria awaits.

Getty ImagesCB: Hector Moreno

In his fourth World Cup, Moreno remains a sure-fire member of Mexico's back-four, even though he may now be the weakest link.

Moreno struggled in El Tri's final tune-up match against Sweden and then conceded the penalty against Robert Lewandowski against Poland.

Still, it's too late to consider yanking such an experienced defensive anchor from the line-up. He's in the team vs Argentina.

International chemistry can be difficult to build on the fly, so it helps when players are also familiar with one another at club level.

Montes, 25, is Monterrey team-mates with Moreno and Gallardo, giving Mexico a rare World Cup back-line with three defenders of the same club.

He started the friendly defeat to Sweden in central defence alongside Moreno and like Moreno could have done better in that outing. Unlike his partner, though, he appeared more assured against Poland.

Montes is ready to go against Argentina.

USMNT star Folarin Balogun back in Thierry Henry mode as former Arsenal striker copies iconic corner flag celebration at Monaco

American striker left Gunners for return to FranceHas already been among the goals in 2023-24Offered a nod towards iconic World Cup winnerWHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international bid farewell to north London on a permanent basis over the summer when completing a €40 million (£35m/$42m) transfer to French football – where he had previously thrived during a loan spell at Reims in 2022-23.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Balogun has produced a mixed bag for Monaco, with two goals recorded and a couple of penalties missed – which both came in the same game. He was on target in his latest outing against Marseille, allowing him to celebrate for the first time in front of the home support at Stade Louis II, and broke out Henry’s famous corner flag celebration routine after hitting the back of the net.

DID YOU KNOW?

Balogun opted to sever ties with Arsenal after registering 21 goals during his time at Reims. He was eager to build on that success with regular first-team football, and felt those opportunities would be hard to come by at Emirates Stadium. He is now enjoying life in Monaco, with a “great response” delivered to the disappointment of having failed twice from the spot in a 1-0 defeat to Nice.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Balogun has a number of goal celebrations in his locker, but does like to offer a nod towards Arsenal icon Henry. He previously emulated the World Cup winners’ corner flag routine when scoring against Paris Saint-Germain for Reims back in January. The 22-year-old is hoping that there will be many more efforts to come from him heading forward – for both Monaco and the USMNT.
