Clarke and Clark fit Surrey's seamers' roles to give high-flying Hampshire a shoeing

Unbeaten fifties for Burns and Amla complete Surrey’s best day of the season to date

It remains to be seen whether the removal of the national selector’s job leads to a major overhaul in personnel in England’s Test team or merely incremental change, but Rory Burns would have noted last week’s news with some apprehension either way.Through a combination of injury, becoming a father, and loss of form, Burns has appeared in only eight of England’s last fifteen Tests – averaging 24.00 – and they have won five of the seven that he missed: if Silverwood is looking for a fall guy to signal a clean break from the Ed Smith era, Burns is the obvious candidate out of the batters who toured India.Burns will know that eyes have been on him at the start of the County Championship season, not least with Adam Lyth, Sam Robson and Haseeb Hameed among those piling up stack of April runs. His record in the first three rounds was unspectacular, with two single-figure scores, two unconverted fifties, and a middling score of 36, and circumstances appeared to be conspiring against him against Hampshire. He walked out to bat on the greenest Oval pitch in recent memory to face Mohammad Abbas and Kyle Abbott after the group leaders had been rolled for 92; it was hardly an obvious opportunity for him to fill his boots. But Burns managed to score freely, reaching 61 at a decent lick in an unbroken stand of exactly 100 with Hashim Amla before bad light brought an early close. Abbas bowled too straight and Abbott too full as both conceded three boundaries to him, and he was characteristically ruthless off his pads, scoring 55 of his runs through the leg side. The idiosyncrasies in his technique remain, but his stubborn faith in his own method has served him well in the past.If weighted averages and underlying data continue to be major influences on England selection in the future, Burns will be helped by this sort of innings, against an international-quality new-ball attack in a game that looks likely to be low-scoring. It remains plausible that it will be Zak Crawley opening the batting alongside Dom Sibley against New Zealand at Lord’s in June, with some combination of James Bracey, Ollie Pope, Dan Lawrence and Ben Foakes joining Joe Root in the middle order with Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler on IPL duty and Ben Stokes injured, but turning this innings into an eye-catching hundred would buy him some time.Related

This was an important knock for Amla too, on the back of a pair at Lord’s last week and a lean start to the year. While his considerable influence on the younger players in the dressing room is an obvious bonus, Surrey are employing him for his runs first and foremost. His trigger movement was particularly pronounced as he shifted across from outside leg stump upon the bowlers’ release, and he punched elegantly through the covers and rolled his wrists effortlessly when Hampshire’s change bowlers strayed onto his pads.In truth, Surrey’s position of dominance owed as much to Jordan Clark as to their unbeaten overnight pair. Their early results meant that this pitch was always likely to offer something for the seamers, not least following the road prepared for their first home game against Leicestershire, and Burns’ decision to bowl first was vindicated within two hours of the toss.Clark, a tattooed Cumbrian, was a late developer in red-ball cricket – he made his first-class debut aged 24 – and is one of the few members of this Surrey side who has not played international cricket and is unlikely to do so in the future. His method here was straightforward, nagging away on a good length and taking advantage of the seam movement on offer from a green pitch to rip the heart out of Hampshire by flattening their middle order and then polishing off the tail after lunch.Clark joined from Lancashire towards the end of the 2018 season as cover for the Currans and as a long-term replacement for Rikki Clarke, his partner in crime today, and was signed with Friday-night sell-outs and death-overs sixes in mind, rather than nibbly April green-tops. But he looked like a seamer tailor-made for these conditions: all six of his wickets were caught in the cordon, as Surrey atoned for five drops in Middlesex’s first innings last week, and his figures – 6 for 21 from 10.3 overs – were the best of his career. There was little sign of what was to come when Clark came into the attack with Hampshire gritting it out at 37 for 1 after 14 overs. Jamie Overton had left the field after struggling with the landing area wide on the crease at the end of his third over, and while Kemar Roach had induced an outside edge to get rid of Joe Weatherley, it was by no means obvious that a collapse was imminent. But after Clarke removed Tom Alsop, angling one across him from a length to draw a nick, all hell broke loose. From 44 for 2, Hampshire lost four wickets for no runs: Sam Northeast and James Vince fell in the space of four balls, both flirting at length balls in the off-stump channel, while Ian Holland was trapped lbw by a full outswinger and Liam Dawson edged to second slip. Three for Clark – two caught by Clarke – and one for Clarke himself; what better combination to give Hampshire a shoeing?

Forget Casemiro: Another £42m Man Utd ace may now be left out for months

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided an update on one of his big money signings, stating he may not be in the squad for weeks or even months.

The Red Devils are going into the international break in poor form, as they have just endured their second defeat in the first three games of the Premier League season. It hasn’t been the start that ten Hag would have dreamt of at the beginning of the campaign, as pressure is already starting to mount on the manager after poor individual mistakes cost his side a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

United were very much brushed aside by the better team on Sunday, as the team and the tactics chosen were not good enough to match their arch rivals. However, it's fair to say the game could have looked very different without some costly individual errors. There weren’t many, if any, United players who could walk off that pitch and feel they played well enough to have their heads held high, but Brazil midfielder Casemiro was particularly poor.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes

The Real Madrid legend, who won everything there is to win in Spain, looked unfit and looked lost at sea during his 45 minutes before he was hooked at half time for young midfielder Toby Collyer.

The midfielder had a pass accuracy of 70% in the 45 minutes he played, with two of his possession losses leading directly to goals scored by Liverpool. Furthermore, the Brazilian won just two of his five ground duels, but it is the possession lost statistic that is alarming, as he lost the ball 14 times in the first half, was dribbled past twice, and obviously, made two errors that led to goals. He finished the game with a Sofascore rating of 5.1.

Former Man United captain Gary Neville gave his response during Sky Sports' coverage: “I don’t think he would have brought him off for the two mistakes. I think it was what happened after that and the reaction of the crowd. I feel for him.”

After the game, ten Hag revealed that a Manchester United player might not be in the squad for a few months, but surprisingly it wasn’t about Casemiro.

Man United signing may not be fit for months

After the game against Liverpool, ten Hag revealed that new summer signing Manuel Ugarte may not be in the squad for months, as he hasn’t played this season and needs to build up his fitness after his initial £42m transfer from PSG.

Ten Hag said, via Man United Zone: “It’s not like I’m Harry Potter. If you see Ugarte, he hasn’t played in the season so far. He needs to build his fitness. It will take weeks, maybe months.”

Manuel Ugarte for PSG

This news will come as another blow to Man United fans, as after the display against Liverpool, they will be keen to see Casemiro replaced and their new signing in Ugarte brought into the team straight away.

The one positive that United may have is that the midfielder will join up with his national team in Uruguay, and if he features for them, he could return to Manchester in better shape for the next phase of the season.

– avisou a dirigente corintiana.

National media rip into anonymous Leeds man who lost 71% duels this weekend

Leeds United have recovered from their stumbling start to the season to remain unbeaten in the Championship after four matches with two wins and two clean sheets in their last two, but now Daniel Farke must watch from behind the sofa as his players jet off around the globe on international duty.

Leeds players away on international duty

The Whites have a whole host of stars included in their national squads during this two-week break from domestic action – probably far more than most second tier teams in fact, leaving fans waiting with bated breath for injury-free returns to Yorkshire.

Junior Firpo starred in a 3-2 CONCACAF Nations League win for the Dominican Republic against Bermuda on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes in a more advanced position than his usual role at Leeds, putting in plenty of hard yards after his teammate Edarlyn Reyes was shown a straight red card just ten minutes into the fixture.

Cost £24.5m: Orta endured Leeds nightmare with flop who's now a free agent

The Whites had a difficult time with this piece of business, for a multitude of reasons.

Back in Europe the likes of Ilia Gruev and new signing Manor Solomon have been in action, with the former playing the full length of Bulgaria's 0-0 draw in Belarus last week while the winger got 80 minutes in Israel's 3-1 defeat in Belgium.

Former manager – now Canada boss – Jesse Marsch squared off against current star Brenden Aaronson in Kansas City, and it was Marsch who came out on top as his side beat the United States 2-1 and Aaronson was withdrawn with a quarter of an hour left after a quiet performance on the right wing.

USA media slam Aaronson's anonymous display vs Canada

Aaronson looks to have returned from his loan spell a new man this season, featuring in every league game so far and finding the back of the net twice – albeit possibly with one more had he buried the late chance against Portsmouth.

He was poor in action for USA this weekend however, with Sofascore statistics revealing he had virtually no impact on the game, mustering zero shots, key passes, successful dribbles or crosses, while he won just two of his seven duels (29 per cent) and lost the ball nearly as many times (9) as he completed passes (12). NBC Sport gave him a 4.5/10, praising his work rate but claiming he was "slapdash especially with the ball".

Other USMNT outlets were quick to highlight his poor display too, as per MOT Leeds News, with Soccer America giving him a 3/10 rating and GOAL.com saying: "Just didn’t really do much of anything. He wasn’t bad, particularly compared to some of his teammates, but he didn’t make many positive things happen, either."

The Whites return to action next weekend with huge home clash against fellow promotion candidates Burnley, but before that Aaronson has the chance to redeem himself as the USA take on New Zealand in a friendly late on Tuesday night – whether the timing of that fixture harms the 23 year-old's chances of featuring in a 12:30 kick-off come Saturday is up for debate.

Virat Kohli: 'Win or lose this game, cricket does not stop for us'

India captain says WTC final is part of India’s “quest for excellence”

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-20213:13

‘WTC a step in the right direction for Test cricket’ – Virat Kohli

The ICC is promoting the inaugural World Test Championship final as the ‘Ultimate Test’, but India captain Virat Kohli has said that the result of the one-off match against New Zealand cannot decide which is the “best” team in the format. Kohli said that his team would instead treat the final as part of India’s “quest for excellence”.”If you are talking about Test cricket and deciding who is the best Test team in the world on one game over a period of five days, that’s not the reality of the truth,” Kohli said on Thursday during the pre-match media briefing. “It is not going to reflect anything for people who really understand the game and know exactly what has gone on in the last four to five years and how the teams have fared. You can very well look back at history and focus on things that didn’t go your way. At the end of the day you realise you play sport and you are going to be beaten and you are going to win on a particular day.”Watch cricket on ESPN+

The WTC final is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

The last ICC tournament India won was the 2013 Champions Trophy, when MS Dhoni was the captain. In the 2016 T20 World Cup, India lost in the semi-final. A year later they would lose to Pakistan in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. In the 2019 World Cup, Kane Williamson’s New Zealand pipped Kohli’s India in the semi-final. However, Kohli remained unfazed about being on the cusp of possibly lifting his first ICC Trophy.”If you win this game, cricket does not stop for us. If you lose this game, cricket does not stop for us. Our processes, our mindset is what matters to us the most and we are striving for excellence every day. And we step on to the field every Test match or every game that we play wanting to win. That’s the most you can ask of your players – to stand up in tough situations and keep proving that you belong here and you take a lot of pride in playing for India.”We have not come here to just play one-off Test. We have come here to play six Tests in the English summer. Our players understand well their strengths and they understand how to utilise those strengths and they will do that during these six Tests.”India’s ‘quest for excellence’
While India head coach Ravi Shastri had said the WTC final would be the “biggest” match for India, Kohli downplayed the superlatives. Asked whether winning the WTC final would be on par with winning the 2011 World Cup, Kohli said he wanted India to treat it like another Test match without getting carried away. “For me this is another Test match that has to be played. These things are very exciting from the outside where there is so much importance and so much other extra stuff that’s attached to one game and it sort of becomes do-and-die.Related

“For us as a team we have been on a quest for excellence for a while now,” Kohli said. “And we are going to continue to be on that path regardless of what happens in this game. We have no doubts whatsoever in our abilities and what we can do as a side.”As an individual player, look, we won the 2011 World Cup which was a great moment for all of us. But cricket goes on. Just the way life goes on. And you have to treat failure and success the same way, and you have to treat the so-called outstandingly big moments pretty similar to the other moments as well.”So, yes, it is an occasion that has to be enjoyed from our point of view, but it is not different for us or no more important for us than the first Test match that we played together as a young group of players back in the day when we were trying to come up the ranks. So, yes, the mindset remains the same.”

Sky journalist suggests Emery will now drop £120k-per-week Aston Villa star

Sky reporter Dan Bardell has suggested that Aston Villa boss Unai Emery could now decide to drop a £120,000-per-week star from his starting eleven.

Villa open Champions League account with thumping 3-0 win

It was a dream start for Emery and the Villans in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the Premier League side putting Young Boys to the sword in Switzerland.

Emery will be pleased with how Villa dominated the play in periods, finishing the game with 20 attempts on goal and the majority of possession, with Villa opening their Champions League account in excellent fashion.

Speaking to TNT Sports after their thumping victory, Emery dedicated the win to former Aston Villa striker Gary Shaw, who passed away aged 63.

“This victory is for Gary Shaw,” said Emery on Villa’s 3-0 win at Young Boys. “We [continued in] the Champions League the way they finished 42 years ago. We want to dedicate this victory to Gary Shaw and his family.

“It was difficult. Our experiences last year [in the Europa Conference League] show that. We focused very well for 90 minutes to be consistent. We were adapting on the pitch. We always respected them.

“We have to create a new way. What we created in the Conference League last season was fantastic.”

Now, attention turns to Villa’s Midlands derby clash against Wolves in the Premier League this afternoon, and it will be fascinating to see how Emery sets up his team at home. Domestically, they’ve started the new campaign in equally promising fashion to their European adventures – winning three out of their opening four league games of the season so far.

Gary O’Neil’s Wolves, by contrast, are yet to win a single game and have been on the wrong side of thumping defeats to the likes of Chelsea. We’ve predicted how Villa will line up against Wolves today, but Bardell has his own verdict.

Bardell suggests Emery could drop Aston Villa star Lucas Digne

Speaking to Villa News, the Sky reporter suggested Lucas Digne may not be in the starting line up this afternoon in favour of summer signing Ian Maatsen.

The £120,000-per-week defender has started all four of their league games thus far, and played 88 minutes of their win over Young Boys. He’s chalked up two assists in that time as well, but Bardell claims Digne could be dropped by Villa for today’s game against Wolves.

Lucas-digne-aston-villa

I think if we didn’t have this cup game on Tuesday, I think there is a decent chance [Jhon] Duran might have started against Wolves,” said Bardell.

There is going to be a time when he starts games in the Premier League and there will be an element of rotation with Ollie Watkins. Maybe we’ll see Maatsen on Saturday instead of Lucas Digne. Other than that I don’t envisage many changes. I think because we played on Tuesday there’s been enough downtime going into this game.

Kuldeep Yadav puts tough days behind him with positive return

The return of his pairing with Yuzvendra Chahal paid dividends for India

Saurabh Somani18-Jul-20214:50

Muralidaran: Presence of too many options led to the exit of Chahal, Kuldeep

Among the eleven Indians who took the field against Sri Lanka in the first ODI, perhaps none had a greater point to prove than Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wristspinner has not been part of India’s first-choice XI in limited-overs formats recently, and faced several questions about his form. He responded by bowling with guile and bit to return 2 for 48, putting to rest the demons of his last ODI outing for India, where he had given up 84 runs in 10 overs as Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes ran amok. After the game against Sri Lanka on Sunday, Yadav pointed to his past record when asked if he feared his white-ball career was over, and said it would be nicer if that was talked about as much as the times he’s not done well.”Sometimes you get hit for runs, but other times you get wickets too. I have taken three-four wickets often, taken five-six wickets too,” Yadav said. “If people talk about that more, it’ll be nicer (smiles). Nobody’s cricket [career] is finished after one game or two games. I think the last series was good for England because the pitches were very good in Pune. Spinners didn’t have much help. It happens sometimes, the pitch is not in your favour. But sometimes you should credit the batsmen too for batting well, rather than say someone’s cricket is finished.”Yadav did admit to nerves at the start of the game, nerves compounded by spending a lot of time on the bench, and within bio-bubbles, which can foster self-doubt even with well-intentioned advice.Related

“Pressure… nervousness is always there when you play, and I was playing after a long time,” he said. “Rahul [Dravid] sir backed me a lot and motivated me. We spoke a lot, and he told me that I should just enjoy bowling, focus on the processes that we have worked on in the last 15 days, and don’t be tense about the result. I’m very happy that my performance was good. You’re definitely nervous if you play cricket after so long, and you want to perform well.”It is difficult in bubbles. If you don’t play, you get a lot of doubts in your mind,” Yadav added. “There are many people who want to help you, talk to you. But if you talk to too many people, then you create doubts within yourself also. But this is a team sport, and sometimes people get opportunities, sometimes you don’t. You have to just wait for your chance.”We’re lucky that the kind of atmosphere that is there in the team is so good. We’ve been in a bubble for a month, and the first 14 days were in quarantine in Mumbai. Then when we came here, the series also got rescheduled, so we got five more days. The kind of atmosphere that is there is so good, that we didn’t feel it [the extended time in the bubble].”Kuldeep Yadav is pumped after taking a wicket•AFP via Getty Images

The first ODI against Sri Lanka was also a return to the comfort zone for Yadav, being paired with legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal for the first time since India’s league match against England in the 2019 World Cup.”I’m very happy that we both got to play together after quite some time,” Yadav said. “I think we’re comfortable with each other, and back each other. Whenever it is needed on the field, I tell him something or he tells me things. Our bonding is good. Maybe because we’re so comfortable with each other, it shows on the ground. Our performance was quite good, and the way we did well, playing together after so long, was good for the team.”Yadav gave a straight-batted reply to the familiar question of what he made of Arjuna Ranatunga’s comment on this being a second-string Indian side, and whether winning by seven wickets with 80 balls remaining was an “answer” to the former Sri Lanka captain.”We don’t need to answer anybody, we just need to focus on our jobs,” Yadav said. “We have come here to play cricket. We’re really lucky that we’re getting to play cricket in this situation. Our focus is on our team and on how we can perform well in six matches, because we have a lot of youngsters. Definitely, we’ll see every match in the same way, that how can we win it for the team. That’s our motto. Other than that, who says what are their thoughts. We should focus on ourselves and enjoy our cricket.”The pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium offered a fair bit of turn, with Yadav extracting full use out of it. He anticipated more help for the spinners over the course of the tour.”I feel that if you bowl in the first innings, because it’s very hot and it’s humid too, the pitch becomes dry and takes turn,” Yadav said. “Definitely if there is a second game on the same pitch, it’ll spin more than in the first match. There are several pitches. Hopefully in the T20Is, some pitches get repeated, although there will be a time gap. But the kind of heat and humidity that’s there, spinners will get turn.”
