Southern Vipers 110 for 4 (Bouchier 32, McCaughan 30*) beat Central Sparks 109 for 8 (A Jones 27, Dean 2-19) by six wicketsEngland off-spinner Charlie Dean took two wickets and took part in a match-winning partnership with Ella McCaughan as Southern Vipers won a maiden Charlotte Edwards Trophy title at Northampton.A solid bowling performance from Vipers restricted Sparks to just 109 for eight in their 20 overs despite Amy Jones’ 27. There was a tangible sense of deja vu at Wantage Road as Sparks repeated their semi-final performance earlier this afternoon, losing wickets at regular intervals and limping into three figures.Maia Bouchier contributed a fluent 32 in the run-chase before Dean (7) played the supporting role in a 41-run stand with McCaughan who struck a run-a-ball 30 to take Vipers to victory. The victory means Vipers, unbeaten all season, have added the T20 trophy named after their coach Charlotte Edwards to their cabinet after winning back-to-back 50-over titles in the last two years.Related

England experience sees Dean through early-season nerves

Dean struck early, clean bowling Sparks skipper Eve Jones for six in the second over. Two overs later Sparks lost their second when Issy Wong (2) drilled Freya Kemp hard to mid-on where Bouchier took a well-judged leaping catch.Amy Jones has been in ominous form in this competition and Vipers thought they had their prize wicket when the England captain was on nine, only for Adams to put down a catch at mid-off off the bowling of Anya Shrubsole. Jones then rubbed salt in the wound, hitting her former England teammate for four in the same direction as Sparks finished the powerplay on 36 for two.Jones had advanced to 27 when she fell attempting one big shot too many, with Bouchier taking an excellent tumbling catch.at mid-on off Dean.Abi Freeborn (18) looked to be positive, coming down the pitch to drive Dean through extra cover for four to bring up Sparks’ 50 in the tenth over but fell shortly afterwards. Chasing a width ball from Georgia Elwiss she was stumped by some smart glovework from Carla Rudd. When Ami Campbell was run out six balls later by Danni Wyatt, Sparks were 61 for five and threatening the second batting collapse of the day after their nailbiting semifinal win.Sarah Glenn (16) went on the attack in an attempt to give Sparks something to defend. She uppercut Bell square for four and slog swept Dean over fine leg for consecutive boundaries. Her downfall came when she drilled a ball from Adams straight back to the bowler. Adams then brilliantly ran out Emily Arlott in the same over after diving to stop the ball off her own bowling. to leave Sparks on 93 for seven.Gwen Davies (12) was the eighth wicket to fall, run out by Bouchier before Davina Perrin hit the final ball of the innings for four over extra cover to close on 109 for eight.Wong removed the dangerous Georgia Adams without scoring early in the chase when Eve Jones took a well-judged catch diving forward at short cover.England T20 opener Wyatt took three boundaries from Grace Potts’ first over but was dropped at midwicket off the same bowler on eight. Sparks were grateful that the mistake did not prove more costly as Wyatt was soon caught at midwicket off Arlott for 20 (10 balls) to leave Vipers 37 for two.Bouchier struck Wong high over deep midwicket for four and cut Arlott square for another boundary, but otherwise was content to knock the ball around as she took Vipers to 50 for two at the end of the powerplay.Turning to spin for the first time, Sparks made an immediate breakthrough when Glenn trapped Elwiss in front, but Bouchier continued on her way, pulling Glenn away for four, and scoring all around the wicket. Her innings came to an end though after a full and straight delivery from Arlott knocked back middle stump. It left Vipers on 72 for four needing 38 to win off the final ten overs.McCaughan reverse-swept Glenn for four while a wide from Potts which flew away for four eased the pressure further. McCaughan sealed the win by pulling Wong for four through square leg. A pacy Arlott was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets.

West Brom in contact with attacking 4-3-3 boss with same agent as Fellows

West Bromwich Albion have reportedly made contact with an attacking manager who shares the same agent as Tom Fellows.

West Brom still searching for new manager after Wicky deal falls through

The Baggies are still looking for Carlos Corberan’s long-term successor at The Hawthorns, as we approach a month after the Spaniard’s move to Valencia.

It looked as if West Brom had their man over the weekend in former Basel and Young Boys coach Raphael Wicky. The 47-year-old was the leading contender and was in advanced talks over the managerial vacancy, however, talks broke down over coaching staff and a move fell through.

That has left the club back at square one, with former Everton boss Sean Dyche a new name that has emerged on the radar in the Midlands.

However, Dyche isn’t the only candidate on West Brom’s radar, with an update shared on another out-of-work boss alongside the ex-Toffees manager.

West Brom in contact with Steven Schumacher

According to club insider DOOD, West Brom have been in contact with former Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher.

In what is described as a “huge turnaround”, Schumacher and Dyche’s agents have been contacted over a potential move to The Hawthorns.

Steven Schumacher

Schumacher, who likes to play an attacking 4-3-3 formation, as per Transfermarkt, caught the eye after taking Plymouth to the Championship in 2023 by winning the League One title. Things didn’t go as well at Stoke City, though, being sacked in September after just nine months and 32 games in charge.

The 40-year-old, who shares the same Wasserman agency as a number of West Brom players including Tom Fellows and Semi Ajayi, could now be one to keep an eye in the race for the Baggies job.

Talking to Football League World, West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess described the links as “interesting” and that there are “worse candidates out there”.

“Steven Schumacher is an interesting one for me because his time at Stoke would probably be enough to put a lot of fans off him, where they would be wondering why he wasn’t able to turn the tide around at Stoke.

“But I think you could take into consideration that not a lot of managers have had success there and if we were appointing him directly off the back of his time with Plymouth Argyle, a lot of the fanbase would be more receptive to it.

“While it’s fair to take into consideration his time at Stoke as a negative about potentially appointing him, I think there are definitely worse candidates out there.”

Burgess added: “I think he’s a manager that would have the fanbase split from the start, where there are more negative feelings to him due to his time at the Bet 365 Stadium. But personally, I wouldn’t be totally against it.”

Lancashire edge absorbing first day despite Chris Dent century

Gloucestershire opener 109* but sees his team slip from 156 for 2 to 279 for 7

Chris Dent’s second LV= Insurance County Championship century of the season failed to prevent Lancashire edging an absorbing first day against Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol. The experienced opener continued a highly impressive season by scoring an unbeaten 109 off 246 balls, with 16 fours, but saw his team slip from 156 for 2 to close on 279 for 7.Left-arm spinner Jack Morley, who celebrated his 21st birthday on the eve of the match, claimed 3 for 79 from 23 overs on only his second first-class appearance, while there were two wickets each for Tom Bailey and Luke Wood.Dent’s innings took his tally of runs from just eight Championship innings in an injury-hit season to 484 at an average of over 80. But his team had only themselves to blame for a series of poor shots, having elected to take first use of what looked an excellent batting pitch.Only 14 overs were possible in a morning session twice interrupted by showers. By lunch, the hosts had reached 30 without loss, with George Scott on 19 and Dent 11.The rain breaks meant Lancashire opening bowlers Bailey and Will Williams could extend their spells, Bailey striking with the first ball of his ninth over when Scott, on 23, edged to Keaton Jennings at second slip. The opening stand had been worth 38. Soon Dent and Glenn Phillips, who hit Williams straight for six off the back foot, were building on it positively.Dent struck three fours off the first seven deliveries he received from Wood, who was also pulled for six by Phillips before the overseas signing surrendered his wicket. On 19, with the total 85, he lofted Morley straight down the throat of George Balderson at deep square.Dent moved to his fifty with a pulled four off Williams, having faced 113 balls and hit 10 fours, receiving good support from fellow left-hander Miles Hammond as they added 62 by tea, which was taken at 147 for 2.An evening session of 40 overs began with Hammond, having moved stylishly to 37, carelessly driving a full, wide ball from Bailey straight to Steven Croft at point to leave his side 156 for 3.It signalled a turning point. James Bracey progressed to 15 effortlessly, but then clipped a full ball from Wood off his toes in the air to mid-wicket where Williams took a fine sharp catch.Ryan Higgins became the next Gloucestershire player to fall to a poorly executed shot, skying an attempted slog sweep off Morley to slip and departing for 11.When Oliver Price went lbw to the next ball, hit on the back pad, the home team had slumped to 209 for 6, with only Dent showing the necessary level of durability.Tom Price could make only a single before, having been softened up by some quick short balls from Wood, he was yorked by the left-arm seamer from around the wicket to make it 214 for 7.By then Dent had moved untroubled to 86 and looked in danger of running out of partners. But he found a more reliable one in Zafar Gohar and moved calmly to a 235-ball ton in the 84th over, shortly after the second new ball had been taken.Gofar was unbeaten on 31 at stumps, having helped to rescue a sinking ship.On the previous occasion when Dent reached three figures this summer, he went on to make 207 not out against Surrey at Bristol.

Chelsea offered loan deal for £135k-per-week Brazilian who Man City want

Chelsea have been handed the chance to strike a temporary deal which would be “straightforward” to negotiate, following claims that manager Enzo Maresca has personally set his sights on bolstering one area of the team.

Enzo Maresca requests new midfielder at Chelsea

The Italian could see Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Cesare Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka depart Stamford Bridge before the transfer deadline on February 3rd, according to numerous reports, so a new midfielder for the engine room could be needed sooner rather than later.

Chelsea contact £195k-per-week striker as Maresca eyes January transfer

The Italian could lose Christopher Nkunku.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 22, 2025

Chelsea’s success this season has partly come from their real strength in depth, with Maresca deploying an ‘A’ team for the Premier League and a ‘B’ team for cup competitions throughout this 2024/2025 campaign.

However, a plethora of Chelsea exits are expected over the final 13 days of this transfer window, with potential departures for Dewsbury-Hall, Casadei and Chukwuemeka threatening to leave Maresca far shorter of options in the middle of the park.

According to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, Maresca has personally asked Chelsea to sign a new midfielder this month, and they’ve been seriously linked with a move for Man United starlet Kobbie Mainoo as a result.

Chelsea have made an approach to Mainoo’s agents as they look to turn the England international’s head, so the Blues appear to be serious about granting Maresca’s wish and bringing in a new technician for the engine room.

Mainoo, who could cost as much as £100 million to prise away from Old Trafford, would be one of the most headline-grabbing transfers of this window – but his price tag and United’s reluctance to let a star player leave mid-season could mean that his signing is too much to pull off.

If a move for the teenage sensation fails, which appears most likely, then Chelsea do have solid alternatives. One of them, according to a fresh report by Phillips on his Substack, is Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian only joined Juve last summer, in a £42 million part-exchange deal which saw both Enzo Barrenchea and Samuel Iling-Junior head to Aston Villa, but it is believed he’s keen on returning to England already.

Chelsea offered Douglas Luiz loan deal for January

Phillips writes that Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Luiz on loan from Juve before the end of this January transfer window, and talks would apparently be “straightforward” considering the Old Lady are already in dialogue with Maresca’s side over a move for Renato Veiga.

It is unclear whether the west London club wish to pursue this move, but Phillips theorises that they will at least be considering it behind-the-scenes.

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz

He adds that Man City are considering a deal to re-sign their former ace, though, after being offered the same opportunity – so Chelsea chiefs will need to make a decision quickly.

The £135,000-per-week international bagged 10 goals and 10 assists for Villa in all competitions last campaign, so he could be an astute addition for Maresca as an already-proven Premier League “playmaker”.
