Jonny Bairstow vows to play all three formats 'as long as possible', in wake of Ben Stokes' ODI retirement

England batter relishing the ‘energy’ of each different format, amid fixture congestion

Jonny Bairstow has vowed to continue as a three-format international cricketer but added his voice to those of his team-mates who have expressed their displeasure at a packed calendar.Over the last week, the workloads of international cricketers have come under scrutiny, particularly in England after Ben Stokes urged the authorities to stop considering players as “cars” following his retirement from ODI cricket.”You can’t just fill us up and we’ll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again,” Stokes said, in the hope that his words would be a wake-up call to create a more manageable schedule. Overnight, Australia batter Usman Khawaja described the physical and mental demands of giving yourself to all international and franchise cricket as “tough”.As it stands, Bairstow will be the only player to represent England in all three formats this summer. He played the four Tests against New Zealand and India, followed by ODIs against India and South Africa, and is currently part of the squad for the three-match T20i series against the Proteas which begins next week. He is also due to play in the first three games of The Hundred for Welsh Fire.Bairstow knows full well how brutal the fixture programme is. However, from his perspective, aged 32 and now a vital cog at No.5 in the Test team, as well as ODI opener and T20i middle-order batter, he still wants it all.”I don’t know if it’s good or bad that I’m one of the last all-format players,” Bairstow told Sky Sports on Friday ahead of the second ODI against South Africa at Emirates Old Trafford. “But naturally there are challenges, we’ve seen that over a period of time now. We only had to look at the Test series this summer when there was the one-day squad in Holland at the same time. I think even if you look at the back end of this summer as well, there are the seven T20s in Pakistan that pretty much overlap with the last Test match. And it even goes back to the last World Cup where then you fly straight to the Ashes with a week’s preparation after quarantining, then straight into the Test match.Related

Joe Root urges England to evolve amid struggles to move on from Eoin Morgan era

“But you know me well enough now: I’ll be trying to play all of them for as long as possible. I’ll be going all out for as long as I can. There might come a time when you do have to make a decision for different reasons, but that’s part and parcel of life and cricket, but in the near future I can’t see me making a choice because I’m loving being part of all three squads. They’re all individual squads and they’re great to be a part of. It’s exciting. You go into a new one and you’ve got a freshness and new faces and energy around them, because you’re going into a new format.”Bairstow also added to the sentiments of Stokes and Joe Root, who said the on-field product will suffer if players have to drop formats entirely, or if there is simply more rotation in squads. However, Bairstow was also resigned to the fact that, until their words are heeded by the England and Wales Cricket Board, there is little else they can do.”I don’t think we have a choice, do we?” he said. “The schedule is the schedule. It’s difficult to say if you want to play less but Stokesy has a point in some ways about the overlapping games that there are. There used to be lead-ins to series and training days before games, but there are back-to-back games coming up now. They are trying to fit in different things like the Hundred and everything else. It’s a tricky job for everyone, but Ben mentioned a car and re-fuelling, didn’t he, which I thought was a good analogy. But yes, it does have certain impacts, and if you’re playing everything at full intensity it will take it out of people.”

Slot could save FSG millions by unleashing Liverpool’s own Kvaratskhelia

Liverpool have suffered something of a winter blip, drawing four of their past seven Premier League matches and trailing Tottenham by a goal to nil after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

The finely crafted fluency has been knocked out of balance in recent weeks, of that there’s no doubt. But first-placed Liverpool still hold a four-point advantage over Arsenal, having played a game less, and will be determined to put Spurs to the sword at Anfield next month.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

Arne Slot will retain his cool and composed demeanour, working in conjunction with sporting director Richard Hughes to advance the Liverpool cause to the best of his ability. Liverpool are pushing for silverware and many supporters are hoping that FSG will green-light a mid-season signing to propel the Merseysiders further forward.

Liverpool's January transfer plans

Liverpool’s contract-related issues have been discussed ad nauseam. Most of the noise has circled around Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Hughes and co better watch out, for Mohamed Salah is being courted by Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal.

Liverpool still expect Salah and Virgil van Dijk to extend their time at Anfield, though Alexander-Arnold’s future is more nebulous. This bulky problem is the chief reason why efforts have not been expended concerning incomings. Left-back Milos Kerkez is top of the wishlist, for example, but not expected to be targeted to replace Andy Robertson until the end of the season.

Then there’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The prized Napoli winger, 23, is slated to complete a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain despite Liverpool showing their hand last week.

It’s a tad frustrating to watch initial intrigue come to nothing for such a talented player, but with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo holding down the fort in that area so spectacularly, it was perhaps not the best track to head down this month. Both Redmen are arguably outstripping the Georgia international this season.

And anyway, Liverpool might have an up-and-coming talent in Rio Ngumoha who could prove to be Slot’s very own version of Kvaratskhelia.

Rio Ngumoha could be Slot's Kvaratskhelia

Sometimes, a fledgling talent comes along and you just know they carry something special. Ngumoha is that talent, though the 16-year-old must be eased into Slot’s senior set-up over the coming years, allowed to develop naturally with sporadic chances among the big boys.

Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha

Ngumoha was poached from Chelsea’s esteemed youth academy last summer, and it’s fair to say that Cobham officials were left hot under the collar as they lost one of their finest to the Merseysiders.

The highly-rated youngster’s signature was stuck due to some protracted administrative hold-ups throughout the summer but the move was completed in September and he has instantly made waves within Liverpool’s youth scene, leading to some high praise.

Reporter Lewis Bower even said: “I’ve probably never seen anything like it before. In terms of his ceiling, it’s frightening.”

The electric-paced wideman has already racked up 13 appearances for Liverpool’s respective youth sides this season, notching four assists and impressing with his ferocious athleticism and fleet-footedness.

His starting berth against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup last weekend was a perfect illustration of the high regard that Slot holds him in, for the Dutch coach is notoriously cut-throat when it comes to team selection.

He might not have scored against Liverpool’s League Two opponents last week, but Ngumoha gave an excellent account of himself on his professional debut, frustrating throughout with zappy dribbling and not afraid to get stuck in defensively either, displaying a combativeness that Slot will have appreciated.

After the 4-0 home victory, The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle even awarded Ngumoha with a 7/10 match rating, writing: ‘Announced himself on debut with some tricky runs down the left before break and released ball at right time. Encouraging display.’

There’s something delicately artful yet supremely sturdy about his ball-carrying ability, his silkiness. The mechanics behind the youngster’s skillset suggest that he could indeed be a superstar down the line if afforded enough time to grow into his skin.

To be sure, Liverpool could have made good use of a high-class winger such as Kvaratskhelia, but Slot has options aplenty and FSG will not want to do something hasty that could inhibit more calculated ventures down the line. They could well have saved themselves millions by not plumping for the £68m Napoli man.

When Jurgen Klopp stepped down at the end of the 2023/24 season, many across Europe might have felt that Liverpool would need to lower their station as the inevitable decline took hold with a cold grip.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

But Slot’s project looks fit to last – and is only just beginning. There’s so much talent in the first team, fighting for titles, but in youngsters such as Ngumoha, Liverpool might have some prodigious potential that could prompt reflective glances back to windows such as this one, when Kvaratskhelia was on the radar, and cause fans to breathe a sigh of relief.

For Ngumoha could be something so much more.

Rangers now interested in signing £15m "elite talent" on deadline day

Glasgow Rangers are now looking to pull off an ambitious deadline day swoop for Philippe Clement as they aim to add late reinforcements to their squad ahead of the second half of the campaign, it has emerged.

Rangers aiming for additions

The first half of the season has not gone to plan for the Ibrox side, with the club currently 10 points off the lead in the Scottish Premiership having played a game more than league leaders Celtic.

Knocked out of the Champions League in the qualification stages, they did at least secure automatic qualification into the knockout stages of the Europa League thanks to a strong campaign that saw them lose just twice, to Lyon and Manchester United.

So far this month though, the Gers have made just one signing, Rafael Fernandes on loan from Lille to help bolster their backline.

Speaking after the 4-0 win over Ross County, Clement remained hopeful that he would be joined by other new faces in the final hours of the window.

“We had meetings about players who have the level to help the team and to help us get to the next level. We will see now in the next couple of hours what’s possible for the club”, he explained.

“It’s not my decision to take. We had clear talks about profiles, about players. Then it’s about the club, if it’s possible or not. I will see.”

The club have been linked with several new faces in recent days, including forward Emmanuel Dennis and Dundee star Lyall Cameron, though neither move is thought to be advanced. Now, they have been linked with another new face but will face an uphill battle to land him in the dying stages of the transfer window.

Rangers want "elite talent" on loan

That comes as a report from The Daily Mail, relayed by Ibrox News, has revealed that Rangers are now keen on signing Argentine youngster Aaron Anselmino on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

The defender, who has been dubbed an “elite talent” by one scout on X, was signed by Chelsea for £15m in the summer but only completed the move to Stamford Bridge this month after spending six months with Boca Juniors.

Now, he is set to be on the move before making his debut for the Blues, with the club open to loaning him out in the final hours of the window. It is thought that Marseille lead the race for his signature as things stand, but a fresh report from The Scottish Daily Mail claims that Rangers now also want to sign the talented defender on loan.

Centre-back is an area that the club are desperate to strengthen, having seen injuries force skipper and veteran James Tavernier into the makeshift role in the Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise, though John Souttar and Clinton N’Siala both returned for the weekend’s win over Ross County.

Any deal for the highly-rated Anselmino will likely need to be put in motion imminently should they want to beat Marseille to a deal, but he could be just the talent to help the Gers end the season on a high.

Domingo denies reports of his resignation as Bangladesh's head coach for Tests and ODIs

“My contract is till November 2023. I am fully committed to the BCB for the next 15 months”

Russell Domingo took up the Bangladesh job in September 2019•BCB

Russell Domingo has reaffirmed his commitment as Bangladesh’s head coach in the Test and ODI formats after reports on Thursday morning said that he had resigned. Domingo and the BCB have both denied those claims, saying that Domingo’s contract remains intact till November next year.Domingo, who is currently in South Africa, said that he would get back to work in October with the Bangladesh A side that takes on Afghanistan A in the UAE, before joining the senior team ahead of their preparation for the India series at home in December.”This is to confirm that all the rumours and speculations that I have resigned from the Bangladesh Cricket Board are not true,” Domingo told ESPNcricinfo. “I am trying to get our cricket to where it needs to be in the one-day and Test format. I will be going to Abu Dhabi in October to work with the A side. I will then join the national team in December. As far as I am concerned, it is business as usual. I will continue the journey that I have started. My contract is till November 2023. I am fully committed to the Bangladesh Cricket Board for the next 15 months.”Earlier this week, the BCB replaced Domingo with S Sriram as the one in charge of the T20I side, although they stopped short of calling Sriram the head coach, using the term “technical consultant”. Domingo said at the time that he was happy with the arrangement as it gave him more time to prepare for the ODI and Test teams, as well as giving him time with his family back in South Africa.Domingo took up the Bangladesh job in September 2019. Since then, he has overseen the ODI side into the second position in the World Cup Super League, while winning a Test in New Zealand. His record in T20Is, however, came under scrutiny after Bangladesh’s underwhelming performance at the T20 World Cup last year. This year so far, the team has just two wins from seven completed T20Is.Bangladesh are currently in Dubai for the Asia Cup. After that, they will play a T20I tri-series in New Zealand that also involves Pakistan, before heading to Australia for the T20 World Cup in late October.

Fulham tried to sign "brilliant" ace who was in West London on deadline day

Leaving their business until the final hours, Fulham reportedly made a last-minute attempt to sign a London rival who only discovered their pursuit of his signature in the final hour of deadline day.

Fulham transfer news

Up until deadline day, the Cottagers endured a fairly quiet window before seemingly springing into life. The biggest headline at the West London club came when reports revealed that they had reached an agreement to re-sign 36-year-old Willian on a free deal after he left Olympiacos as a free agent. The Brazilian, set to make another Premier League return, will be looking to leave one last mark on England’s top flight.

Meanwhile, since the transfer window has slammed shut, Fulham have seemingly set their sights on another bargain deal in the form of a transfer for Bright Osayi-Samuel.

The Fenerbahce full-back is out of contract this summer and the West London club are reportedly working on negotiations to secure his services on a pre-contract agreement. It’s a right-back problem that needs solving amid Kenny Tete’s own contract doubts and it’s one which a rival star could have solved in the dying embers of the window.

Bright Osayi-Samuel

According to talkSPORT, Fulham made a last-minute attempt to sign Vladimir Coufal from West Ham United, but failed in their attempts as the right-back only discovered their interest in the final hour of the window given he was taking part in a match in West London on deadline day.

Fulham working on pre-contract deal to sign "outstanding" ace after Willian

They could land a bargain deal…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 5, 2025

Busy in a derby day defeat at the hands of Chelsea, Coufal very nearly had a simple journey following that 2-1 loss on Monday evening only to stay put at West Ham instead. Whether Fulham return for his signature when the summer arrives remains to be seen in what would certainly be a wise addition.

"Brilliant" Coufal could be Osayi-Samuel alternative

Whilst Fulham’s focus should be on signing Osayi-Samuel, Coufal wouldn’t exactly be a bad alternative to turn to should they fail to sign the Fenerbahce man ahead of the summer window. At 32 years old, the West Ham defender is a man full of experience and Premier League knowhow, having adapted to England’s top flight almost as soon as he arrived in 2020.

Dubbed “brilliant” by former West Ham boss David Moyes during his first season at the club, Coufal may be an ageing option but he’s also one that is still capable of making an impact when called on from the bench.

If it’s not to be Osayi-Samuel, then Coufal could arrive as a back-up option to Timothy Castagne, who would be thrown into the starting role once and for all at Craven Cottage.

Fulham haven’t been afraid of welcoming rival stars in the past – signing Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal last summer – and could yet repeat that trick when they get another chance this summer.
