Suryakumar had 'a bigger impact on the game', says Player-of-the-Match Rahul

“We were in our minds saying 180-185 would be a really good target, but the game always surprises you”

Shashank Kishore03-Oct-20221:42

How do you bowl to Suryakumar Yadav?

“Honestly, I’m surprised I’m getting this.”KL Rahul had just been adjudged Player of the Match for his 28-ball 57, which set the tone for India’s 237 for 3 in the second T20I against South Africa in Guwahati. But the fact that India were able to sustain their tempo right through the innings on a surface Rahul felt was “a bit sticky and gripping a bit”, was as much down to Suryakumar Yadav’s pyrotechnics. That’s what Rahul was referring to after India rode on their fourth-highest T20I total to take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.Suryakumar, currently No. 2 in the world among T20I batters, launched an offensive on South Africa’s bowlers almost immediately after walking out to replace Rahul in the 12th over. He raised his half-century off just 18 deliveries, and finished on a 22-ball 61, displaying more than just shades of his 360-degree game that has left many in awe. He hit five fours and five sixes in all.Related

Pieces shuffle into place in India's batting jigsaw

“Quite honestly, after the first two-three overs, the chat between me and Rohit [Sharma] was that the wicket is a bit sticky, it’s gripping a bit, certain slower ones were gripping, so we were in our minds saying 180-185 would be a really good target if we bat well, but the game always surprises you,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “Quite honestly I’m surprised I’m getting this [award]. I think Surya, the way he batted, had a bigger impact on the game. And he changed the game.”Rahul chuckled when told that the decision was made by “a certain senior opening batter [Sunil Gavaskar]”, because that was the more difficult role to play.”We as opening batters always think our job is tougher, but having batted a few innings in the middle order in ODIs, I do realise that’s difficult as well,” Rahul said with a smile. “Like I said, Surya had a bigger impact, the way Virat [Kohli, who scored 49* in 28] batted as well… it’s not been easy for someone like Dinesh [Karthik, who got 17* in seven]; he doesn’t get too many balls, just to walk in there and do what’s expected was a phenomenal batting effort.”Rahul admitted to having derived a lot of satisfaction from playing two contrasting innings, both impactful, in the series so far. In Thiruvananthapuram, on a greenish surface with bounce and lateral movement, he grafted hard to fight through a top-order wobble in a small chase of 107. On 14 off 31 balls at one point, he finished with an unbeaten 51 off 56 even as Suryakumar came in and did his thing, making a robust 33-ball half-century as India got home by eight wickets.2:56

Miller: Giving freebies to a player like Surya is poor execution

“It does, it really does – I mean, I think it’s very important as an opening batter to understand what is required on a particular day and give it your best for the team,” he said when asked if the knocks had given him satisfaction. “That’s what I tried to do, that’s the mindset I’ve always played the game in and I’ll continue to play that way. And yes, it’s good to test yourself on different conditions as well. I’m quite satisfied.”Rahul set the tone off the very first ball in Guwahati, when he rose with the bounce to punch Kagiso Rabada to the point boundary. His next boundary was a wristy pick-up shot for six over square leg off Wayne Parnell in the fourth over. The follow-up to that was another delightful punch behind point. Inside the first four overs, Rahul had already laid down a marker.”The first ball, the back-foot punch really set me up,” he said. “When I play that shot, in my mind, when I play both sides of the wicket especially, I know my balance is pretty good. I hit the first ball square of the wicket on the off side, hit a few balls on the leg side, so it tells me head is stable and my positions are good.”Is it instinctive?”Yes, I think it is,” he said. “It’s T20 cricket, you have to try and hit sixes, get yourself int positions where you can hit sixes. I tried to do that and react. When bowlers are bowling at 145kph, there’s not much time to see the ball, it’s a bit of instinct and a lot of practice and hard work over the years.”

Not just Nwaneri: Arsenal’s "dangerous" Hale End gem can ease Havertz blow

It’s just been one thing after another for Arsenal this season.

Just as fans were coming to terms with the news that Gabriel Martinelli would spend some time on the sidelines following the knock he picked up against Newcastle United, news broke, revealing that Kai Havertz had picked up a hamstring injury in Dubai.

The German international is now set to miss the rest of the season, meaning Mikel Arteta’s attacking options are perilously thin.

However, to help ease the blow and prevent the remaining attackers from being played into the ground, the manager could and should turn to one of the academy’s best players this term.

The latest on Arsenal's injury crisis

While the likes of Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are still out of action, the latter for quite some time, the major crisis for Arsenal is in attack, as they are missing four of the six first-team forwards they started the campaign with.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetalooksdejected

Bukayo Saka, who has nine goals and 13 assists this season, was the first to go down, suffering a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace in late December that required surgery and is set to keep him out until mid-March at the very earliest.

A few weeks after the Hale End icon was ruled out, Gabriel Jesus suffered an ACL injury in the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United that will keep him out of action until next year.

Before his injury, the Brazilian centre-forward had racked up a reasonable haul of seven goals and two assists in 27 games.

Then, it was Martinelli, who has seven goals and four assists this season, who went down with another muscular injury, although the good news, if you can call it that, is that he should be back in action by early April at the latest.

Finally, Havertz is the latest forward to suffer from a hamstring injury and is set to miss the rest of the campaign, which is a serious problem; as for all the criticism he receives, the German is the team’s top scorer, with 15 goals and five assists to his name this season.

Altogether, Arsenal’s injured attackers have scored 38 goals and provided 24 assists so far this season, so it would be apt to describe the current situation as a crisis, one which might require Arteta to play one of the academy’s best players this season to ensure the likes of Ethan Nwaneri, Leandro Trossard and Raheem Sterling aren’t overplayed and injured as well.

The Hale End star who has to play this season

Fortunately, with players like Khayon Edwards, Ismeal Kabia, Andre Harriman-Annous, and Charles Sagoe Jr, Arsenal have several promising youth stars who can potentially provide cover for the injured first-teamers.

However, suppose the manager wants someone to step up from the youth teams and potentially make an instant impact.

In that case, he might be better off calling up Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, as, unlike some of the other options, he has just turned 22, so the physical demands of senior football should be less of a step-up.

Moreover, while he hasn’t exactly impressed on his previous loan spells, he has been in electric form for the academy this season.

For example, in just 13 games, totalling 1126 minutes, the “dangerous” attacker, as dubbed by journalist Layth Yousif, has scored eight goals and provided six assists.

That means the 5 foot 10 dynamo is averaging a goal involvement every 0.92 games, or in other words, every 80.42 minutes, which is a pretty impressive rate of return regardless of the level.

In The Pipeline

Ultimately, Arteta shouldn’t be looking to hand Butler-Oyedeji a ton of minutes over the coming months, but given the situation the club find themselves in, he should be giving him enough to ensure the rest of the first team are not completely run into the ground in Havertz’s absence.

Changing New Zealand come up against bogey team with form not on their side

Across formats, New Zealand last beat Australia on their soil in 2011; can they break that spell to kick off their 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup despite not being at their best?

Andrew McGlashan21-Oct-20221:31

Williamson: Both Ferguson and Milne bring something different

When New Zealand came across the Tasman in late March 2015 for the ODI World Cup final they could not have been a more confident team, after surging through the tournament unbeaten on home soil, dreaming of the chance to topple their fellow hosts at the MCG to claim the title. However, as history shows, they were overwhelmed on that day by seven wickets. The moment Brendon McCullum charged and missed at Mitchell Starc in the first over was clearly huge, but it is often forgotten New Zealand had recovered to 150 for 3 before the major collapse set in.Related

Weather watch: High chance of rain affecting Aus vs NZ, Ind vs Pak

Daryl Mitchell unlikely to be available for NZ's opening game

After thorny run-in, Australia hope for smooth start to title defence

That defeat marked the beginning of a winless stretch in Australia that is now at 15 matches across formats following the recent 3-0 ODI series loss in Cairns and talk of psychological hurdles to overcome. Their last win in the country was in 2011, the Test match in Hobart where Trent Boult made his international debut, so it has been more than a decade since tasting success here. That record, at least, should end at some point over the next couple of weeks. But the fixture list has brought New Zealand and Australia back together, this time at the beginning of a global event, in a rematch of last year’s final in the UAE where Australia were again able to overpower their neighbours despite a magnificent innings from Kane Williamson.Williamson, as you would expect, was not taking any bait with regards New Zealand’s record in Australia. “We haven’t thought too much about that,” he said. “Nice to play against Australia first up, and it should be a good game.”They know the conditions well. They’re very clinical at home and in most places that they play, which is a reflection of where they stand in the game. So there is that respect. We know that we have a number of match-winners throughout, and the team’s looking forward to the [competition]. We’ve had a number of good clashes [with Australia] over the years and a number of good series as well, and I guess most recently probably the last World Cup.”Boult and Williamson are among four New Zealand players who appeared in the 2015 final who could feature at the SCG on Saturday (Australia are likely to have five) although the other two, Tim Southee and Martin Guptill, are not certain selections. If Guptill doesn’t make the starting XI it adds to the sense that there is a slow changing of the guard in the New Zealand side. The fortunes of Boult and Williamson, meanwhile, are also part of a wider theme about this New Zealand side and whether they have passed the peak that made them the form team in the world little more than a year ago.Boult’s future has nothing to do with form. He remains one of the finest left-arm quicks in the world and in those recent ODIs in Cairns was magnificent. But he has now walked away from his New Zealand Cricket contract and, while he is part of this event, what happens next is less certain. He has spoken of reaching next year’s ODI World Cup, but there is a difficult path to navigate. For Williamson the questions have been fitness and workload. Since that stunning innings in last year’s final he has spent considerable time sidelined with an elbow injury. When he returned, fluency was hard to come by, but there were promising signs in the recent tri-series final against Pakistan where he made 59 off 38 – his highest strike rate in a double-figure T20 innings since that knock against Australia in Dubai.”It was nice to spend some time in the middle,” he said. “It would have been nice to get on the right side of the result as a team. For me, it’s just continuing to try to improve and add value where I can, and try and make as big a contribution as I can to the team and my role.”However, over the last 12 months or so there have started to be regular questions asked about whether he is the right person to carry on as captain in all three formats. You would think that a successful tournament in Australia would put the ball firmly in his court as to whatever decisions he wants to make.Their lead-in to the opening match has not been ideal since arriving in Australia. They were bundled out for 98 by South Africa in their first warm-up match in Brisbane and the second, against India, was washed out. Their one training in Sydney was then impacted by the weather, although they did manage a brief spell outside. They are also selecting from 14 for the opening game at least, with Daryl Mitchell still recovering from his broken finger.”Preparation is always varied regardless of what happens, even if it’s perfectly planned,” Williamson said. “It was nice to get those [tri-series] games in back home, some really competitive cricket, and then nice to be over here in Australia and get into some preparation. It is a balance between doing more and trying to make sure guys are fresh, and I suppose you factor in some of the uncontrollables. We’ve had a bit of weather and all that.”Unlike their visit in 2015, or last year’s final in the UAE, a loss at the SCG wouldn’t be terminal to New Zealand’s hopes of adding to the 2000 ICC Knockout and 2021 Test Championship as their two pieces of global silverware. But ending the hoodoo would be the perfect start.

Starc on de Bruyn's backing up: 'Absolutely taking the mickey'

The fast bowler has warned batters in the past and admitted he may eventually run someone out

Mitchell Starc has conceded he could eventually be drawn into running out a batter backing up after he warned Theunis de Bruyn on the fourth day at the MCG.In the 17th over of South Africa’s second innings, Starc pulled out of his delivery stride when he saw de Bruyn was backing up well out of his crease. “Stay in the crease, it’s not that hard,” he was heard saying over the stump microphone.During the drinks break he spoke to Fox Cricket. “He’s halfway down Punt Rd, wasn’t he? It’s bad enough in white-ball cricket, I don’t know what the need is in red-ball cricket,” he said.”I was just letting him know that if I have to keep my foot behind the line, he can at least keep the bat behind the line.”Speaking after the match, Starc indicated there would be a point where if a batter kept doing it he would take the bails off. “That’s just absolutely taking the mickey,” he said. “That’s not just taking off before a bowl, that’s a metre down the wicket. I gave him a couple of warnings, but if he wants to keep doing it, I’ll take them.”I had a word with him last night actually because he was doing yesterday. I said it again to him and he said ‘I’m not doing it on purpose.’ There’s no need for it…I keep saying I’m not going to take the stumps but you at least keep your bat behind the line.”Earlier this season, Starc gave England’s Jos Buttler a similar warning during a T20 in Canberra. Shortly after that he proposed a new method of managing the situation by using a run penalty, although that was more with a focus on T20 where small margins are much more likely.”Why not take it out of the hands of interpretation, and make it black-and-white?” Starc told The and The . “Every time the batter leaves the crease before the front foot lands, dock them a run. There’s no grey area then.”I’ve warned batters plenty of times, [Buttler] is not the first occasion,” Starc added at the time. “I warned probably seven Kiwi batters in those ODI games in the top end – some were two metres outside their crease. As I said to Jos, I could never see myself doing it [running a non-striker out], but it doesn’t mean that you should then feel free to leave your crease early.”The ball after the warning to de Bruyn in Melbourne, Starc pinned Sarel Erwee lbw with a searing yorker and three overs later Scott Boland removed de Bruyn with a lifting delivery that was edged to slip.

Wolves now free to make move for £8m ace who just rejected fresh contract

Turning their attention towards the summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers will now reportedly have the chance to sign their midfield target after he rejected the chance to sign a fresh contract at his current club.

Wolves transfer news

It was a busy January transfer window for Wolves in the end, who crucially welcomed two defensive reinforcements in Emmanuel Agbadou and Nasser Djiga whilst also welcoming a replacement for Mario Lemina in the form of Marshall Munetsi. More importantly, however, those in the Midlands managed to keep hold of Matheus Cunha, who has been in fine form ever since the winter window.

When the summer arrives, those in the Midlands may not enjoy the same luck. The Brazilian’s reported £62m release clause is set to attract a number of suitors, including the likes of Arsenal in what could hand Wolves a major issue.

Such a hefty fee would leave them no choice but to spring into action to sign a replacement as well as perhaps one particular midfield target following a recent development.

According to A Bola, as relayed by Sports Witness, Wolves are now free to move for Hidemasa Morita this summer following reports that the midfielder has rejected a contract extension at Sporting Club in pursuit of a move to the Premier League.

Not just Cunha: Wolves could have unearthed a £75m star in the making

The Wolves star was excellent against Fulham

ByJoe Nuttall Feb 26, 2025

Wolves were put off signing the 29-year-old in January as it was believed that he would put pen to paper on a new deal and, therefore, only maintain his €10m (£8m) valuation.

Now heading for the exit door with just over a year remaining on his current deal, however, those at Molineux could land a cut-price deal or even decide to put any potential Cunha money to good use.

"Underrated" Morita can add key experience

Whilst Morita wouldn’t necessarily be a flashy signing this summer, his importance would quickly become clear if Wolves decided to make their move. A player with plenty of years in European football under his belt, the Japan international would add the exprience that Andre otherwise lacks as a far more raw and young prospect.

Hidemasa Morita

Dubbed “underrated” by Ben Mattinson, Morita has seemingly set his sights on the Premier League and could quickly emerge to solidify a Wolves side who will need to be better than ever on the defensive front if Cunha leaves this summer.

After failing to secure his signature in the January transfer window, their second chance to sign Morita is one that Wolves should not turn down this summer.
