The Chelsea circus continues! Six reasons why Frank Lampard's return is COMPLETELY pointless

The ex-Blues boss has made a sensational return to the Stamford Bridge dugout on an interim basis – but the move provides more questions than answers

If you're a fan of soap operas or reality TV, it's well worth tuning in to the goings on at Chelsea Football Club this season. Indeed, no-one could have foreseen the twist in the latest episode.

After Graham Potter was prematurely kicked off the show off over the weekend, a former main character is set to make a sensational return to the cast: Frank Lampard.

That's right, Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have inexplicably appointed their second interim manager in a matter of days as they continue their search for a permanent replacement for Potter – which is still in its infancy.

The move signals the return of one of the club's favourite sons in Lampard, following his stellar playing career and failed stint as manager between 2019 and 2021.

But the big question is: WHY?!

  • Getty

    Pandering to the disgruntled fanbase

It has been reported that Boehly and Eghbali were stunned by the supporters' vociferous response to Chelsea's poor form in the latter days of Potter's reign, and appointing Lampard a this stage stinks of an attempt to appease the fanbase.

There are very few Chelsea fans on the planet who would not like to see the club legend back at Stamford Bridge in some capacity – although not necessarily as the head coach – and this PR stunt allows the ownership to curry favour without committing to anything long-term, buying themselves some time as they look to recover what has been a farcical first 11 months at the helm.

There are big names available right now

The decision not to appoint a permanent manager immediately – especially when such outstanding candidates are available – is highly questionable.

Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique are the leading contenders at this stage. They are elite managers who are currently out of work and therefore should be achievable targets for a swift appointment.

It has been reported that Nagelsmann would like some time off having been sacked by Bayern, but it sounds as though he is sufficiently intrigued by the Chelsea job to can those plans.

Striking now would give either coach a good chunk of time to get to grips with the squad and implement their ideas before devising a transfer strategy at the end of the season.

Both men also have experience in the latter stages of the Champions League – Chelsea's last hope of silverware AND qualification for next season's competition. Luis Enrique even won the competition in 2015.

  • Getty Images

    Potentially throwing away UCL chance

Lampard's Champions League record understandably makes for short reading, but Chelsea's last-16 demolition at the hands of eventual winners Bayern Munich in 2020 will not fill fans with confidence ahead of this year's quarter-final showdown with Real Madrid.

Granted, Lampard negotiated two group stages – despite the odd scare – but the last eight is a completely different stage, one that appears far beyond Lampard's comfort zone.

As far-fetched as it may be, Chelsea's could really do with another miraculous Champions League triumph, not only to qualify for next season's competition but to guarantee the financial security to bankroll more success.

It feels highly unlikely that Lampard will be the man to deliver that dream run.

    What about Bruno Saltor?!

Bruno Saltor must be completely baffled by the latest news.

Potter's assistant has only just been appointed as interim manager himself, but is already set to find himself out of the job as Boehly and Eghbali go rogue.

His first game in charge was pretty encouraging, too, as Chelsea held Liverpool to a goalless draw – a game they really should have won.

Gaga Slonina in goal and Caleb Wiley on the wing: Who the USYNT should start against Ecuador in Under-20 World Cup opener

Without some key players for the opening game in Argentina, coach Mikey Varas has some key selection decisions to make

At each of the last three Under-20 World Cups, the U.S. has reached the quarter-final stage. And, at each of the last three U20 World Cups, the U.S. has stumbled at that same hurdle.

The U.S. U20 men's national team will hope things will be different this time around as they head to Argentina for this year's tournament with a squad loaded with experience. Several players already have USMNT camps to their name, while several others have emerged as big contributors for clubs all over the world.

Still, Mikey Varas' squad is far from full strength. Key players like Paxten Aaronson and Jalen Neal saw their potential participation blocked by their clubs, while several other stars won't be available for the start of the tournament. In fact, the U.S. will only have 15 outfield players for their first match against Ecuador, giving Varas some difficult decisions to make for what might be his side's toughest group test.

With that in mind, GOAL breaks down how the U.S. should line up in the first game of the U20 World Cup:

  • Getty

    GK: Gaga Slonina

No questions here. With his USMNT debut already behind him despite his age, Slonina is the starter without a doubt. The Chelsea starlet is the USMNT's next great goalkeeper, and the next step of his development will come in Argentina, where he should play every minute if all goes to plan.

  • Getty

    LB: Jonathan Gomez

He's still waiting for his debut at Real Sociedad, but Gomez is another player that has already logged minutes with the USMNT. A solid left-back that came up with Louisville City, Gomez's development has come in Real Sociedad's youth teams, where he was briefly under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso. Competition for spots on the left will be fierce, but Gomez should be steady at left-back.

  • Getty Images

    CB: Josh Wynder

American soccer's next big export, Wynder should be a go-to player for the U20s before heading to Benfica. The Louisville City star has been compared to Virgil van Dijk and, while those comparisons are very premature, it does show just how good the teenager is. He's playing up an age group, so there could be difficult moments against better teams, but Wynder should be just fine.

    CB: Brandan Craig

The first of several Philadelphia Union starlets, Craig should be a reliable starter in central defense. He was a constant during CONCACAF qualifying and, even with Neal out, the U.S. should feel fine about the partnership between Craig and Wynder, at least as individuals.

Liverpool hit with concerning injury news

Liverpool’s significant injury woes were added to ahead of Saturday’s victory over Southampton with a number of players being ruled out before the game.

The likes of Ozan Kabak, James Milner, Naby Keita and Ben Davies were all omitted from Jurgen Klopp’s squad with what the club described as “minor injury concerns”.

Whilst that in itself is not too worrying with the four hopefully recovering relatively quickly, any absences for Liverpool’s upcoming strenuous schedule could significantly harm their chances of gaining a place in the Premier League top four and with that, a UEFA Champions League place for next season.

It remains to be seen just how severe the issues are, with the specific nature of the problems remaining undisclosed.

However, with the Reds back in Premier League action as soon as Thursday evening against Manchester United, Klopp will certainly hope that at least some of those aforementioned players can return sooner rather than later.

The absences of Kabak, Milner and Keita are probably going to be the most felt.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-moreozek-suarez-ward-correa-klopp-super-league-watkins” title=”Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Since arriving from Schalke in January, Kabak has become the Reds’ first-choice centre-back, following the injuries suffered by Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip earlier this season.

With him out though, the Reds were forced to play a defensive pairing of Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips against the Saints.

Whilst they earned a clean sheet, it is certainly not a set-up that Klopp will want to use regularly, especially in the race for the top four as Williams, in particular, was caught out a couple of times and was bailed out by his goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, with Milner and Keita out, joining Jordan Henderson on the sidelines, Klopp’s midfield choices are significantly reduced.

Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara are all certainly capable but then that just leaves Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones in reserve – a worrying lack of depth heading into a key final four games of the season.

Klopp then will certainly hope that the injury issues are nothing more than just minor to compound their woes any further but with their next game just a matter of days away, he’ll be concerned that his players seem to be dropping like flies as his side need to be pretty much perfect for the rest of the campaign.

An inability to properly rotate, added to the fact that Klopp is relying on essentially his 8th choice centre-back option in Williams, is a huge worry for the manager, one that could cost his side a top four finish.

Leeds interested in signing Moumi Ngamaleu

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Young Boys winger Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu this summer as Marcelo Bielsa eyes up reinforcements for his squad.

The Whites held Manchester United to a goalless draw at Elland Road on Sunday in what was another impressive Premier League result. Bielsa’s men had already taken four points of Manchester City and Liverpool in their two previous matches and are now ninth in the table.

Leeds’ current success doesn’t mean the squad isn’t in need of strengthening this summer, though, with a host of names being linked with moves to Elland Road.

[freshpress-quiz id=“351040″]

Leeds eye up Ngamaleu move

According to TEAMtalk, the Whites are eyeing up a move for Ngamaleu, with the 26-year-old capped 14 times by Cameroon and scoring twice for his country.

Brighton, Everton, Leicester City and Rangers are all seen as possible suitors as well, suggesting that there will be a frenetic battle for his signature this summer.

Transfer Tavern take

Bielsa could be looking to improve in the wide positions in the next transfer window, with Raphinha arguably the only top-class winger at the club despite the likes of Jack Harrison and Helder Costa possessing talent.

Ngamaleu could potentially be the ideal player to strengthen the left wing, and his average of 2.3 dribbles per game in the Europa League this season is vastly superior to Harrison’s tally of 1.1 per match in the English top flight, with the 24-year-old playing on the same side where the Young Boys winger is regularly deployed.

The Cameroonian is capable of playing on either flank, which could appeal to Bielsa, but he is more renowned for playing on the left, meaning he and Raphinha could be the first-choice wide options if he manages to oust Harrison from the regular starting XI.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly expecting one player to leave the club this summer. Find out who it is here.

Leeds’ predicted line-up vs Liverpool

With the European Super League being the talk of the town at the moment, you’d be forgiven for potentially forgetting that there is still the little old matter of a Premier League clash between Leeds United and Liverpool taking place this evening.

The game between two of the giants of English football has been largely overshadowed by the fury and shock of the top-flight’s big six wanting to break away and form their own elite competition.

Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt have his opinion on the ESL, and it will be intriguing to see what the Argentine has to say either before or after the game tonight.

The Leeds boss also has a couple of crucial conundrums to solve in terms of his team selection, with suspensions and injuries taking its toll.

And with that in mind, below is a look at how Leeds might line up for the Premier League tie against Liverpool tonight.

In goal, Illan Meslier will be looking to keep his tenth clean sheet of the season in the top-flight, and become the seventh goalkeeper to get into double digits for the campaign.

The back four will, of course, see one enforced change after Liam Cooper’s sending off against Manchester City last weekend, and in the club captain’s absence, Robin Koch will be the man Bielsa turns to.

Dubbed by former Leeds man Tony Dorigo as a “rock”, the 24-year-old is in line to make his first start for the club since recovering from his knee injury last month.

The midfield could see a couple of alterations, with Tyler Roberts dropping out for Mateusz Klich, and Jack Harrison coming in for the injured Raphinha – the City loanee missed the clash against his parent club due to the terms of his loan deal.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Latest Leeds transfer rumours and news”]

That should be the only changes Bielsa makes to his starting line-up, with Patrick Bamford set to lead the line once again.

Predicted XI: Meslier; Ayling, Llorente, Koch, Alioski; Phillips, Harrison, Dallas, Klich, Costa; Bamford.

Meanwhile, Leeds must start this “under-rated” gem today vs Liverpool…

Leicester: Fans react to Under update

Plenty of Leicester City fans have been reacting to a transfer update regarding Cengiz Under on social media.

According to the reliable John Percy of The Telegraph, the Foxes won’t exercise their option of making the 23-year-old’s deal at the King Power sTADIUM permanent in the summer.

Under, who arrived on loan from Roma last year, could have joined on a full-time basis for a fee in excess of £20m. However, his performances haven’t justified that price tag, and it seems as if the Turkish forward will return to Italy in the summer.

He has made 19 appearances under Brendan Rodgers this season, scoring twice and registering three assists. Under has been out through injury since March and has started just one Premier League game all season.

Percy shared the news on Wednesday evening on Twitter, with the post receiving plenty of interaction. Here is what some Foxes fans had to say in reply to the update.

Liverpool fans want Konate

Many Liverpool fans want to sign Ibrahima Konate following a recent report from AS on the RB Leipzig central defender.

As per the news outlet, he has a release clause of €45m (£38.5m), but the Bundesliga club may be willing to negotiate a transfer sum closer to around €25-30m (£21.4-25.6m), a fee that one fan called a ‘bargain’.

The Anfield faithful have been strongly linked with a move for Konate in the summer transfer window, as they hope to bring in another centre-back to potentially partner Virgil Van Dijk in the longer term or sufficiently cover for him if the Netherlands international sustains another bad injury in the future.

The 21-year-old still has a lot of potential at his age having played for one of Europe’s top clubs, and several supporters of the Merseyside club have been drooling at the possibility of him signing for them.
