Opinion: Ante Rebic deal could transform Tottenham’s attack and solve major Pochettino conundrum

Tottenham Hotspur have managed to dig themselves a gaping hole just at the moment in which everything appeared to be falling into place, but Daniel Levy could yet hand Mauricio Pochettino a timely boost to catapult the club back onto flat ground.

When it rains it pours. Tottenham are in the midst of a crisis in their season which is both damning and familiar in its character.

An annual crisis of football existentialism is a theme which habitually perpetuates in north London, with the narrative surrounding Pochettino’s failure to break his silverware duck and it’s correlation with Levy’s apparent reluctance to part with a penny in the transfer market painting a gloomy outlook for the future.

In the midst of a mini injury crisis and following a cataclysmic trio of results which ended Spurs’ realistic hopes of mounting a title bid and seen them crash out of both the Carabao and Fa Cup, there is an endless stream of reasons for supporters to vent at the club’s hierarchy.

Demands for new signings have fallen on deaf ears in the past but there is a growing feeling that Spurs simply cannot afford to draw a blank this month with a Champions League encounter against a slick, fresh and title-chasing Borussia Dortmund side looming on the horizon.

The final hours of the transfer window are sure to be characterised by intrigue and a strong sense of pessimism amongst the supporters, but that negativity could transform into optimism if a recent report from the Daily Mail comes to fruition.

Indeed, the report claims that Tottenham transfer target Ante Rebic has publicly declared his interest in moving to the Premier League.

“The Premier League is attractive and it would suit my style. I’d like to experience it.”

While the arrival of Rebic would not entirely dispel the problems which have plagued the club in the past twelve months, it would go along way to easing the current crisis and solving Tottenham’s long-term second striker conundrum.

The Croatia international played a starring role in his nation’s journey to the World Cup final in the summer, dribbling with infectious tenacity and working relentlessly hard off the ball to recover possession for his side.

His style is tailor made for the Pochettino mould and his versatility would give Spurs another option at centre-forward to utilise in Kane’s absence.

Rebic is not a natural centre-forward, but his preference to operate slightly behind a natural number nine and his goal scoring return this season suggest that he is perhaps better suited to a role at the spearhead of the attack than the likes of Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min.

Eintracht Farnkfurt’s talisman has continued his excellent form from the World Cup and started the Bundesliga campaign in style, with seven goals and three goals to show for his efforts from 14 fixtures.

In the modern climate it is difficult to find a player boasting that type of return who is valued at anything other than an extortionate price, so the fact he is reportedly valued at £35 million should be giving Levy plenty to ponder over ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

Rebic is a perfect fit for Spurs – particularly given current circumstances – his potential asking price is not unreasonable and he clearly has personal motivation to make the switch to English football.

Time to act, Levy.

Leeds: Dean Jones makes Phillips claim

Transfer insider Dean Jones has made a claim regarding Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: First start since December today?

The 26-year-old made a welcome return from injury last weekend to feature under new Whites boss Jesse Marsch for the first time. He came on as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Southampton and is now in contention for a first start since December against Watford this afternoon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Phillips has been linked with the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham over recent weeks and is currently in the process of changing agents.

Manchester United are also thought to be ‘working on a deal’, but Jones has now made a claim on the midfielder and his thoughts on Marsch.

The Latest: Jones’ comments on Phillips

Speaking to GiveMeSport regarding Phillips, Jones said that the midfielder has ‘been really impressed’ by Marsch, believing that he is now ‘becoming more and more convinced’ over staying at Elland Road as a result.

The journalist said of the 26-year-old:

“They’re starting to turn the corner. He’s been really impressed by what Jesse Marsch has done so far. I do think he’s becoming more and more convinced about staying but, of course, money does talk.”

The Verdict: Premier League status will be vital

To have any chance of keeping Phillips beyond the summer, you’d expect that the Whites need to guarantee a third successive season of Premier League football over the coming weeks.

This afternoon’s trip to Vicarage Road appears to be vital when it comes to Leeds looking to pull away from the relegation zone, with a win taking them 11 points clear of their 19th-placed opponents.

Phillips reportedly wants to sign a new deal at Elland Road, so he could play a key role in receiving one by helping the club to do the business on the pitch in the final seven games of this season.

Journo gives Man United update on Pogba

Manchester United and Paul Pogba have had a rollercoaster relationship over his career and now with his contract ending in a matter of weeks it seems that there are no chances of the Frenchman extending his stay, especially with new reports emerging about his future away from the club.

What’s the word?

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Paul Pogba has been made an offer by Paris Saint-Germain to secure his future back in France.

The report suggests that the terms of the contract are lower than the final offer that Manchester United put on the table for Pogba in their desperate attempts to keep him at Old Trafford.

Despite this offer from PSG, the 29-year-old allegedly would prefer a move to Juventus according to Luckhurst.

One passage of the report reads: “Dressing room sources at United say Pogba is effectively ‘gone’ as he approaches the final two months of his contract and the club has been planning for his expected departure for most of the season. United intend to sign at least one midfielder in the summer.”

Supporters will be buzzing

It’s fair to say that the reception from Man United supporters has been mixed in his second chance at the club over the last six years, with the player and his agent, Mina Raiola, having a very public and at times fractured relationship with the club, and after his latest rejection to extend his stay supporters will surely be buzzing about his departure.

The midfielder has won the EFL Cup twice and Europa League at the club, scoring 39 goals and contributing 51 assists in 230 appearances for the Red Devils, with a goal involvement every 2.5 games played which is an output that will surely be missed at Old Trafford.

Despite a consistent attacking output over the years, it seems that now could be a good time for the World Cup winner to move on so that Manchester United can concentrate on finding their next star to play for the new manager who will be appointed this summer, and the club will ultimately save a staggering £15m a year on Pogba’s current wages.

Not only that, but it will rid the club of one of the club’s sizeable egos, something that can only be a good thing for the club moving forward.

Currently the powers at the club are focused on finding the right manager to come in and change the direction Man United have been heading in for some time and moving forward letting go of long-term players like Pogba could be a real blessing in disguise as they attempt to start a new era, with a new manager and new vision to get back to winning trophies.

Rangers vs Livingston team news: Jack

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left lauding some early team news ahead of their game at home to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership tonight.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that Ryan Jack is now available for selection in the squad, as is Scott Arfield.

While having another player in Arfield back is a boost in itself, members of the Ibrox faithful were particularly pleased with the news regarding Jack, who has been victim to too many injury problems during his time at Ibrox.

He has no doubt been a key part of the team over the years, scoring nine goals and supplying a further nine assists in the Scottish Premiership for the Light Blues, while he made 19 appearances in their title-winning season.

Nonetheless, it will be great just to see him out on the pitch again, having missed 64 matches through injury since the beginning of last season.

Rangers summer transfer news

Transfer insider Dean Jones has now dropped some big news with regards to summer plans at Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: Targets lined up

The Ibrox faithful are reportedly now considering moves for both Ross Stewart and Gareth Bale in the summer, so they are clearly already eyeing up ways to strengthen with the current season drawing closer to an end.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They find themselves six points behind leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, but are in the UEFA Europa League semi-final after they knocked out Braga over two legs – if they can win the competition and secure Champions League football, new quality and depth in the market will be a necessity.

The Latest: Planning already

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has shared that the hierarchy at the Teddy Bears have ‘already been speaking’ about possible transfer targets for the summer, while other clubs have not got that far yet:

“I know they’ve already been speaking about potential targets for the window, which is quite interesting given we’re still only halfway through April.

“A lot of clubs aren’t that far down the road in terms of defining where they want to head.”

The Verdict: Big

The fact that the Light Blues are planning ahead already is big for their ambitions for next season.

It looks as if they are going to miss out on the SPFL title, but should they end up winning the Europa League, then they would automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages.

Thus, they could potentially attract big names like Bale to the football club, and so deals will need to be in place in order to fight off the likely competition.

Nonetheless, it is always better to get your business done early in the window, so that everything is prepared in time for the start of the new campaign.

Man United: Fans react to John McGinn links

Manchester United are keen on signing Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn in the summer.

That’s according to The Telegraph, with a number of Red Devils fans giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

United aren’t expected to be busy during the January transfer window, with the club turning their attentions towards a busy summer.

Midfield is thought to be an area where United want to strengthen, with McGinn featuring against Ralf Rangnick’s side in a 1-0 FA Cup defeat last week.

The Telegraph’s James Ducker revealed on Monday that the 27-year-old is admired by Old Trafford technical director Darren Fletcher and could be valued at around £40m. Should his contract situation remain the same in the Midlands, the Scot would have two years left on his deal in the summer, although he is expected to be offered new terms.

United fans react

@utdreport shared the links regarding McGinn on social media. Here is what these United fans had to say in reply, with a mixture of responses available to view below, where one supporter labelled it as ‘ridiculous’.

Arsenal eye Everton striker Calvert-Lewin

Everton reportedly now risk losing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Arsenal in the summer.

The Lowdown: Injury misery

Calvert-Lewin has endured an injury-plagued season, playing just 14 times in total over all competitions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

In turn, the Goodison Park faithful have struggled massively, lurking just outside of the relegation zone.

There is no doubting his ability and how vital is to the team, after all, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘one of the best’ in his position ahead of the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Latest: Arsenal lurking

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist and transfer expert David Ornstein has revealed that Calvert-Lewin is now among the options considered by Arsenal to strengthen their attack this summer.

However, the Gunners are also considering signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

The Verdict: Keep

Yes, Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries this term, but he has already shown his worth to the Toffees and remains one of their key players.

The striker has 56 goals in total for the club over six consecutive campaigns, while also contributing a handy 17 assists (Transfermarkt).

At 25 years of age, the England international still has his best years ahead of him, and so Frank Lampard’s side will not want to let him go cheaply, especially to another club in the Premier League.

However, if they were to get relegated, they may not have a choice.

Everton fans don’t want Roberto Martinez

Lots of Everton fans have been flocking to reports that former Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has emerged as the frontrunner in the search for a replacement for Rafael Benitez.

On Sunday, Everton announced the departure of the 61-year-old as first team manager, putting an end to his seven-month tenure at the club. This news did not come as a surprise – the Toffees have produced one of their worst starts to the league for many years, as they sit 16th in the table beyond the midway point of the season, winning just one of their last 13 top-flight matches.

The final nail in the coffin for Benitez came as Everton embarrassingly lost to relegation-threatened Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday. The defeat came amid a toxic backdrop of fan protests demanding his sacking and even saw one spectator invade the pitch to try and confront the ex-Newcastle boss.

Following the Spaniard’s departure as manager, numerous candidates have been linked with the job. However, the most shocking reactions have arisen following the most recent news regarding former Toffees boss Martinez.

These Everton fans flock to Martinez manager news

According to Dominic King of the Daily Mail, the 48-year-old has emerged as the frontrunner for a return to Everton, less than six years after he was sacked by Farhad Moshiri.

Numerous Toffees fans flocked to the news of this report on Twitter, with many furious at hearing that Belgium would be due £2m in compensation if Martinez completes his Goodison Park return.

Here’s what these fans said, with some deploring the prospective £2m outlay and others unconvinced by the Spaniard given how badly his previous spell on Merseyside ended in 2016. One angry Evertonian even raged that re-hiring Martinez would be a “braindead appointment”:

“This would be another braindead appointment that would end in inevitable disaster with most fans, again, saying we told you so.”

Arsenal will make Calvert-Lewin push

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been the subject of interest from Arsenal for ‘years’ and the Gunners will ‘push’ to sign him this summer.

That’s according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown, who was speaking to GiveMeSport.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The lowdown

The Athletic revealed in January that Calvert-Lewin is one of Arsenal’s primary targets in the striker position.

The club’s coaching staff are apparently strong admirers and they see his personality ‘as a good fit for Arsenal’s current squad’.

The player himself would reportedly be open to moving to The Emirates as he looks to fulfil his career ambitions, which include featuring for England at the Qatar World Cup.

But Calvert-Lewin isn’t the only Everton attacker Arsenal are monitoring. Transfer insider Dean Jones has heard that they could make a move for Richarlison too.

The latest

Brown is confident that Calvert-Lewin will be a bigger priority than his team-mate given that Arsenal have tracked him for such a lengthy period.

“I know for a fact that Arsenal like and have liked Calvert-Lewin for quite a few years, even before he was scoring regularly in the Premier League,” he said.

“So, if I was to guess, I’m pretty sure they’ll make a bigger push for Calvert-Lewin than they will Richarlison in the summer.”

The verdict

How much could Everton get for the £72,000-per-week forward?

Well, the figure mooted by The Athletic in January was £60million, which would be the second largest sale in Everton’s history (behind Romelu Lukaku’s £76.2million switch to Manchester United in 2017).

Could The Toffees still command that in the summer off the back of a lean season for Calvert-Lewin, who’s scored one non-penalty goal in 13 appearances? Perhaps, given that the 25-year-old is still under contract for another three years and has shown he’s capable of far better.

Indeed, he hit a combined 29 goals across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 Premier League seasons.

Everton supporters had ‘got it in for’ the striker against Manchester United last time out after he lost a couple of aerial battles in the first half, but some may still be sad to go in light of his previous goalscoring feats.

Indeed, in the words of former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti, he’s a striker with ‘outstanding’ gifts, while the Royal Blue podcast have labelled him a ‘monster’.

In other news, Kevin Phillips has been disappointed by one Everton star in particular.

Leeds keen on Barcelona youngster Jutgla

Leeds United are interested in making a move for exciting Barcelona youngster Ferran Jutgla, according to a fresh report which emerged on Friday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Jutgla impresses at Barca

The 22-year-old has caught the eye of Barca manager Xavi, having impressed for the club’s first team and B team this season, being hailed as ‘spectacular’ by the Spain World Cup-winning legend.

Jutgla has scored twice in his first five appearances for the senior side, adding to eight goal involvements in 15 matches for the reserve team.

With Leeds eyeing up possible attacking signings, an intriguing report has emerged regarding their interest in the winger.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Leeds keen on move

According to El Nacional, Leeds are keen on the idea of snapping up Jutgla in the January transfer window, with the Whites willing to pay £8.3million for his services.

While he is happy to return to the B side once established players such as Memphis Depay come back from injury, he is also believed to like the thought of moving to the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-30/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One for the future

Jutgla looks a hugely exciting prospect, so Leeds’ reported interest is certainly eye-catching, as Marcelo Bielsa’s eyes up January reinforcements with a little help fro Victor Orta’s keen eye for Spanish talent.

Granted, the Whites aren’t short on wide options currently but the Barca man could be a long-term prospect on the right-hand side, especially if Raphinha moves on in the future for a massive fee – what a coup it would be to already have an up and coming replacement waiting in the wings.

The fact that Jutlga is already shining for a club of Barca’s stature, despite their current struggles, highlights why he is someone Leeds should look to sign.

In other news, Leeds are believed to be eyeing up a move for a defender. Find out who it is here.
