NCL Week 3: Barishal strong favourites for promotion to Tier 1

Cyclone Sitrang wreaked havoc as it travelled along the southern tip of Bangladesh, leaving most of the country, and the National Cricket League, rain-soaked. Three out of the four matches were drawn after the first two days, October 24 and 25, were rained off, with only Barishal Division beating Dhaka Metropolis by four wickets in mostly dry Rajshahi. The lowest number of overs was played in the drawn game between Dhaka Division and Chattogram Division at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra. The matches between Sylhet Division and Rangpur Division and Rajshahi Division and Khulna Division, both played in the Sylhet International Stadium premises, were drawn too.Best batters
The 18-year old Rangpur opener Abdullah Al Mamun struck his maiden double-century, which was also his first century in first-class cricket, against Sylhet. He was unbeaten on 210 with 16 fours and 13 sixes. He batted for more than nine hours, to help his side get a 400-plus score in the shortened game. When Sylhet replied, Towfiq Khan blasted 92 off 62 balls with eight sixes and as many fours.Khulna’s Amit Majumder and Dhaka Metro’s Marshall Ayub struck the other two hundreds in this round. Amit made 101 off 196 balls with nine fours and a six, while Marshall struck ten fours in his century against Barishal.Best bowlers
The fast bowlers were quite successful during this round. Left-arm quick Abu Hider took his fifth five-wicket haul but it was in Dhaka Metro’s losing cause against Barishal. Abu Jayed had figures of 4-71 against Rangpur, while Kamrul Islam Rabbi took seven wickets in Barishal’s win over Dhaka Metro. Barishal were also aided by left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam’s 5-35.Best match
In the only match where play was possible for at least three days, Dhaka Metro were bowled out for 255. Marshall’s century propped them up but he got little support at the other end. Hider’s five-wicket haul ensured Dhaka Metro led by 90 runs after Barishal were bowled out for 165.But Dhaka Metro squandered their advantage when they were bowled out for 124 in the second innings, with Tanvir taking the five-for and Rabbi taking four more wickets.Rafsan Al Mahmud’s 71 set up the fourth innings chase before Salman Hossain and Kamrul got them home with the unbroken 17-run seventh-wicket stand.Points to ponder
Sylhet are well settled at the top of the Tier-1 points table, while Chattogram are languishing at the bottom with just two points. In Tier-2, Barishal are strong favourites now for promotion to Tier-1, while Khulna remain at the bottom.Players to watch
Many of the top first-class cricketers were out due to the BCB XI’s tour of Tamil Nadu, India, so it was left to stalwarts Marshall and Kamrul to pick up the slack. They did so manfully, while the rest of the players had to wait in the dressing rooms to see off the cyclonic weather.

The France international found the net just minutes after kick-off, delivering a decisive strike that gave PSG a narrow 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg of their semi-final tie. However, he later limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, sparking concerns about his availability for the crucial return fixture in Paris.

With 20 minutes remaining on the clock, Dembele was forced to stop play and sit down near the PSG technical area. He appeared to be in discomfort as he held his hamstring, signalling to the bench for assistance. The forward was swiftly substituted, with Bradley Barcola taking his place. The sight of Dembele hobbling off raised alarms for the fans, particularly given how integral he has been to PSG’s success this season across multiple competitions.

WHAT LUIS ENRIQUE SAID

Following the match, PSG manager Luis Enrique addressed Dembele's situation and said: "We're going to try to get Dembele back on the pitch. But we're a real team. If Ousmane can play, that's better. But if he doesn't, we'll still be a real team. We've been saying that since the start of the season. He'll undergo tests tomorrow. It's not serious, it's something very minor, but he's probably a doubt for the second leg."

Dembele himself attempted to ease fears following the match. Speaking to , the 26-year-old said: "I felt a little something, but it's OK."

Starc on de Bruyn's backing up: 'Absolutely taking the mickey'

The fast bowler has warned batters in the past and admitted he may eventually run someone out

Mitchell Starc has conceded he could eventually be drawn into running out a batter backing up after he warned Theunis de Bruyn on the fourth day at the MCG.In the 17th over of South Africa’s second innings, Starc pulled out of his delivery stride when he saw de Bruyn was backing up well out of his crease. “Stay in the crease, it’s not that hard,” he was heard saying over the stump microphone.During the drinks break he spoke to Fox Cricket. “He’s halfway down Punt Rd, wasn’t he? It’s bad enough in white-ball cricket, I don’t know what the need is in red-ball cricket,” he said.”I was just letting him know that if I have to keep my foot behind the line, he can at least keep the bat behind the line.”Speaking after the match, Starc indicated there would be a point where if a batter kept doing it he would take the bails off. “That’s just absolutely taking the mickey,” he said. “That’s not just taking off before a bowl, that’s a metre down the wicket. I gave him a couple of warnings, but if he wants to keep doing it, I’ll take them.”I had a word with him last night actually because he was doing yesterday. I said it again to him and he said ‘I’m not doing it on purpose.’ There’s no need for it…I keep saying I’m not going to take the stumps but you at least keep your bat behind the line.”Earlier this season, Starc gave England’s Jos Buttler a similar warning during a T20 in Canberra. Shortly after that he proposed a new method of managing the situation by using a run penalty, although that was more with a focus on T20 where small margins are much more likely.”Why not take it out of the hands of interpretation, and make it black-and-white?” Starc told The and The . “Every time the batter leaves the crease before the front foot lands, dock them a run. There’s no grey area then.”I’ve warned batters plenty of times, [Buttler] is not the first occasion,” Starc added at the time. “I warned probably seven Kiwi batters in those ODI games in the top end – some were two metres outside their crease. As I said to Jos, I could never see myself doing it [running a non-striker out], but it doesn’t mean that you should then feel free to leave your crease early.”The ball after the warning to de Bruyn in Melbourne, Starc pinned Sarel Erwee lbw with a searing yorker and three overs later Scott Boland removed de Bruyn with a lifting delivery that was edged to slip.

Spurs will wrap up the season with three further Premier League games, while they will face United in the Europa League final on May 21.

He’s perfect for Piroe: Farke simply must unleash "monster" Leeds star

Leeds United will be looking to return to winning ways after falling to a 2-0 defeat against Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Farke made 10 changes ahead of the cup clash but failed to get the better of their divisional rivals, exiting the competition and allowing for full focus on their Championship promotion push.

The trip to Watford will see the German want to extend their current 13-game unbeaten run in the league, building a gap at the top end of the table as the league edges towards its conclusion.

It would be no surprise to see the boss revert all 10 changes from the weekend, with barely any of the players who came into the side against the Lions staking their claim for a regular starting position.

Farke can’t take any risks ahead of the clash against Tom Cleverley’s side, with their previous record against the Hornets highlighting the need for a strong side to maintain their superb previous form.

Leeds United’s recent form against Watford

Leeds boast an impressive record against tonight’s opponents, with Farke looking to continue the rich vein of form against the Hornets.

The last meeting between the sides came in October, with the Whites coming out 2-1 winners at Elland Road after goals from Largie Ramazani and Brendan Aaronson secured the victory.

However, the last meeting at Vicarage Road also saw the club drop points in their previous attempt to secure promotion from the second tier, with Crysencio Summerville’s wonder strike the highlight of the 2-2 draw.

Leeds remain unbeaten against the Hornets in all of their last five games in all competitions, winning four of them, with the last defeat coming way back in February 2016.

If Farke is to maintain such a record in London tonight, he simply must start one player, especially after his impressive display during the dismal defeat in the FA Cup over the weekend.

The Leeds player who Farke needs to unleash against Watford

Winger Wilfried Gnonto was handed his first start in nearly a month on Saturday afternoon, looking to prove to the boss why he’s deserving of a recall to the starting eleven.

The form of the likes of Dan James and Manor Solomon have kept him out of the side in recent matches, but his display against Alex Neil’s side is just an example of the quality he possesses.

Whilst the Whites fell to a defeat, the Italian was one of the shining lights within the side, looking impressive off the right-hand side, undoubtedly the most threatening option in the final third.

The 21-year-old, who’s previously been dubbed a “monster” by one analyst, won five fouls and nine duels during the defeat – the most of any player on the pitch, showcasing his ambitions of making a positive impression.

However, it was Gnonto’s figures within the final third which caught the eye, completing 100% of his attempted dribbles, and winning a penalty – both figures that could aid top scorer Joel Piroe to further boost his tally.

The winger also created one other chance and registered five touches in the opposition box, having the tools to wriggle his way into attacking areas, further offering Piroe with the opportunities he needs in front of goal.

Tonight is a huge fixture in the club’s promotion push, with a reaction desperately needed from the weekend to avenge the disappointing defeat at Elland Road.

However, if Farke is to mastermind another league victory, it would be a bold decision not to hand Gnonto a start given his display just a couple of days ago.

Wolves now free to make move for £8m ace who just rejected fresh contract

Turning their attention towards the summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers will now reportedly have the chance to sign their midfield target after he rejected the chance to sign a fresh contract at his current club.

Wolves transfer news

It was a busy January transfer window for Wolves in the end, who crucially welcomed two defensive reinforcements in Emmanuel Agbadou and Nasser Djiga whilst also welcoming a replacement for Mario Lemina in the form of Marshall Munetsi. More importantly, however, those in the Midlands managed to keep hold of Matheus Cunha, who has been in fine form ever since the winter window.

When the summer arrives, those in the Midlands may not enjoy the same luck. The Brazilian’s reported £62m release clause is set to attract a number of suitors, including the likes of Arsenal in what could hand Wolves a major issue.

Such a hefty fee would leave them no choice but to spring into action to sign a replacement as well as perhaps one particular midfield target following a recent development.

According to A Bola, as relayed by Sports Witness, Wolves are now free to move for Hidemasa Morita this summer following reports that the midfielder has rejected a contract extension at Sporting Club in pursuit of a move to the Premier League.

Not just Cunha: Wolves could have unearthed a £75m star in the making

The Wolves star was excellent against Fulham

ByJoe Nuttall Feb 26, 2025

Wolves were put off signing the 29-year-old in January as it was believed that he would put pen to paper on a new deal and, therefore, only maintain his €10m (£8m) valuation.

Now heading for the exit door with just over a year remaining on his current deal, however, those at Molineux could land a cut-price deal or even decide to put any potential Cunha money to good use.

"Underrated" Morita can add key experience

Whilst Morita wouldn’t necessarily be a flashy signing this summer, his importance would quickly become clear if Wolves decided to make their move. A player with plenty of years in European football under his belt, the Japan international would add the exprience that Andre otherwise lacks as a far more raw and young prospect.

Hidemasa Morita

Dubbed “underrated” by Ben Mattinson, Morita has seemingly set his sights on the Premier League and could quickly emerge to solidify a Wolves side who will need to be better than ever on the defensive front if Cunha leaves this summer.

After failing to secure his signature in the January transfer window, their second chance to sign Morita is one that Wolves should not turn down this summer.

Rangers must regret selling "firework" who’s now outperforming Bajrami

Glasgow Rangers’ failed to really improve their first-team squad during the winter window, as Philippe Clement made just one signing.

Rafael Fernandes arrived on a six-month loan deal, although there is an option to buy inserted into the agreement.

The young centre-back was given his first start against Queen’s Park last weekend in the Scottish Cup clash at Ibrox.

Rangers managerPhilippeClementbefore the match

It was the perfect game for Fernandes to get accustomed to life in Glasgow, yet it soon turned into a nightmare.

While he didn’t do anything particularly wrong throughout the game, the 1-0 defeat ranks as the club’s worst defeat in their recent history, perhaps of all time.

In truth, the entire starting XI were way off the required levels during the shock defeat and a massive improvement is needed ahead of the match against Hearts on Sunday afternoon in the Premiership.

One notable disappointment was the performance of Nedim Bajrami, who has stagnated over the previous few months.

Nedim Bajrami has struggled at Rangers of late

The game against the Championship side was expected to give the likes of Bajrami and Ianis Hagi an ideal chance to notch a goal or two, thus bolstering their confidence in what was meant to be a fairly routine victory.

Where Are They Now

Instead, what followed was a dismal performance, especially by the Albanian, who couldn’t find a way through the Queen’s Park defence.

Indeed, he was even subbed off after the first half, proving how dreadful he had been during the opening 45 minutes at Ibrox.

Following the game, journalist Ben Banks of Glasgow World gave Bajrami a match rating of 2/10 while stating that the attacking midfielder was ‘found seriously wanting and not for the first time. Subbed at half-time after no impact’.

After a promising start in Glasgow, the former Sassuolo star hasn’t quite lived up to his £3.4m transfer fee, that’s for sure.

Since the turn of the year, Bajrami has registered just three assists in all competitions for the Light Blues, although two of those came against non-league side Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup.

In 20 Premiership games, the 25-year-old has scored just once, created four big chances, averaged 1.3 key passes and succeeded with 1.2 dribbles per game.

Furthermore, Bajrami can be often found wanting defensively, winning just 2.1 total duels per game in the top flight since he made his debut in September.

His performances drew criticism from Stevie Clifford, founder of popular fan media outlet Four Lads Had a Dream, who said:

Unless he improves, quickly, Bajrami could find himself on the way out of Rangers after just a solitary season at the club.

Over the years, the Gers have sold players who have shone since leaving. One notable example is Fashion Sakala, who is enjoying life in the Middle East and is even outperforming Bajrami this season.

Fashion Sakala’s Rangers stats

Sakala made the move to Ibrox ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, costing Steven Gerrard nothing as he was secured on a pre-contract agreement.

It took a while for him to settle in Scotland, but over time, he gave the supporters glimpses of what he was capable of.

Fashion Sakala

He featured 50 times during his maiden season, scoring 12 goals and registering seven assists. His unpredictable nature was often an advantage, as the opposition often didn’t quite know how to handle the African star.

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton lauded the player midway through his first season, saying:

His second season didn’t start too well, as he found himself down the pecking order under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who preferred other options.

Under Michael Beale, however, the Zambian demonstrated his true talents. Between December 2022 and May 2023, Sakala netted 11 goals and grabbed seven assists, proving that he could have a solid future at the club under Beale.

That summer, Sakala was surprisingly sold by the manager, joining Saudi outfit Al-Fayha for a fee believed to be around £4m, which represented a decent profit on the player.

Since then, he has been in wonderful form. Might the club regret selling him when they did?

Fashion Sakala's record this season

The 27-year-old recorded 31 goal contributions – 22 goals and nine assists – last season for his new club, shining in his new surroundings as the Light Blues struggled, having to make do with the likes of Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers.

While the 2024/25 campaign hasn’t quite been as productive, he has still scored six times and grabbed four assists, which is two more than what Bajrami has registered during the current season.

Additionally, Sakala has created six big chances domestically, averages 2.8 shots, and 1.3 key passes and succeeds with 2,5 dribbles per match in the Saudi Pro League this season.

These numbers are of course, higher than the figures Bajrami is producing across the same period. Elsewhere, Sakala also wins 4.9 total duels per game in the top flight, which is more impressive than the 2.1 duels Bajrami wins each game.

Sakala may have divided opinion at times among the Ibrox faithful, but there was no denying his usefulness in certain games. Perhaps not the most clinical in front of goal, but he always tried to make something happen, and his unpredictable nature made it difficult for defenders to mark him effectively.

Clement could certainly use a player like Sakala right now, especially given how poor Rangers have been in recent weeks.
