£50m forward seriously considering exit after Arsenal express real interest

Arsenal are believed to be among the “most active” competitors in the race to sign a very in-form forward, and he’s now seriously considering a summer exit in what could be a boost for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal shortlist attacking targets for summer window

If recent injuries are anything to go by, the Gunners could use an extra option or two in the final third of the pitch.

Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending ACL rupture, now combined with Kai Havertz’s own season-ending torn hamstring, which the German sustained during their warm-weather training camp in Dubai, leaves Arteta desperately short of forward options as they bid to catch Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli’s pending returns will come as a much-needed boost, but neither winger is expected back until next month, forcing Arteta to get creative as Arsenal are plunged into an injury crisis.

In the background, interim sporting director Jason Ayto and the Gunners recruitment team are plotting ways to ensure they’re not left too short in the attacking third next campaign.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetalooksdejected

Arsenal are expected to have a busy summer, according to reliable journalist Charles Watts, with many high-profile names on their list of targets.

Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams, RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko and Newcastle United star Alexander Isak are all attracting serious interest from Arsenal (Charles Watts), but all of these players will be difficult to acquire both financially and due to the intense competition for their signatures.

There have even been claims this week that Arsenal are targeting Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, while Borussia Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi has also found his way on to Arteta’s transfer shortlist.

“Arsenal want somebody who can play on the wing as well as through the middle, and he fits that mould,” said former Premier League scout Mick Brown on Arsenal’s interest in Jota.

“But he still scores goals and he’s very effective. He would give Mikel Arteta’s side something they haven’t got at the moment.”

Ademola Lookman considers Atalanta exit after Arsenal express interest

Another attacking player who fits that mould of a versatile forward, who can play a variety of roles, is Atalanta star Ademola Lookman.

Atalanta's Ademola Lookman celebrates scoring their third goal withEdersonand Matteo Ruggeri and completes his hat-trick.

The former Everton and Leicester City ace can be deployed as a second striker, a traditional centre-forward, out wide and as a CAM – making him a very enticing prospect for Arteta.

Journalist Mirko Di Natale reports that Lookman is seriously thinking about leaving Atalanta as Arsenal express a serious interest, alongside both Chelsea and Juventus, with his price tag set at around £50 million.

Lookman has racked up 14 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions, and famously ended Bayer Leverkusen’s extensive unbeaten run last season with a hat-trick against Xabi Alonso’s side in the Europa League final.

Newcastle could be offered £300k-a-week star who Howe called "outstanding"

Newcastle United have established themselves as one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides under Eddie Howe, so it is no surprise that St James’ Park is becoming an intriguing draw for potential recruits.

Newcastle United's pursuit and implications of continental qualification

The Magpies have become European qualification contenders this season. However, recent Premier League defeats to Bournemouth, Fulham and Manchester City have put the spotlight on Howe amid his side’s ongoing pursuit of continental football.

Potentially, the English top-flight could be awarded an extra Champions League spot for next season, which may offer a saving grace. Still, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Aston Villa will provide stiff competition in a battle stretching right to the wire.

While Newcastle’s owners, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, debate whether to renovate St James’ Park or if moving stadium may enhance their profile as a global institution, there is one certainty that remains in an ever-changing landscape; the club needs to keep producing success stories to attract high-calibre imports every season.

PIF now considering Newcastle move to sign "strong" £553k-p/w star for Howe

He could make a return to European football…

1 ByTom Cunningham Feb 23, 2025

Booking a place to dine at Europe’s top table again is likely to elevate their chances of landing star quality, and Howe now may have the opportunity to capitalise on the uncertain future of a renowned Premier League figure this summer.

Newcastle United could be offered chance to sign Jack Grealish

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United could be offered Manchester City’s Jack Grealish this summer as his long-term future at the Etihad Stadium veers further into the corridor of uncertainty.

His agency CAA Stellar Sports are reportedly exploring options for his next move and he may be available for a fraction of the fee north of £100 million paid by the Citizens to land his services back in 2021.

On the contrary, Grealish’s £300,000 per week wage packet could signify that the England international may need to take a significant paycut to move to the Magpies.

Alternatively, his former club Aston Villa alongside Inter Milan and Bayern Munich have emerged as potential suitors as his role at Manchester City continues to be called into question despite playing a major part in seven trophies making their way into the Citizens’ bulging cabinet.

Previously labelled as an “outstanding player” by Newcastle boss Howe, the 29-year-old has remained a solid if unspectacular performer under Pep Guardiola this season. Per Fotmob, Grealish has fashioned 22 chances and completed 13 successful dribbles in the Premier League circa 2024/25.

Albeit his influence has waned a little recently at Manchester City Grealish may still have plenty of years ahead of him and would offer another reliable option in the wide areas for Howe to maximise should a move to the North East materialise, and by the looks of things, a move to St James’ Park in 2025 is one to watch.

Kane has told : “I saw a lot of similarities between me and him. No one expected him to do it and it’s a story people can relate to, of hard work and never giving up.

“Self-belief has probably been my biggest strength throughout my career. No matter what, I’ve always done what I believed is right. That could be training, that could be matches, that could be telling someone they’re doing something wrong or not agreeing with what we’re doing as a team.

“I think when you’re confident in yourself and believe in what you’re doing, you have no fear, almost. I think back to Norwich and Leicester and I wasn’t playing but doing extra training and finishing and had some players laughing and saying, ‘I don’t know why you’re doing that’. All those little moments made me who I am.”

Will England get a 5th Champions League place? UEFA’s rules explained

The new format of the Champions League has certainly divided opinion among supporters, pundits and clubs alike, but the revamped league phase did see a few upsets along the way.

Manchester City suffered defeats against Sporting CP, Juventus and PSG while drawing with Feyenoord as they missed out on the top eight. Elsewhere, Real Madrid just made it into the top 24, losing to Lille, Milan and Liverpool.

The likes of Lille and Aston Villa finished in the top eight, thus securing a place in the round of 16 without the need for an extra play-off tie.

Real, PSG, Man City, Milan and Dortmund will all face an extra couple of matches due to underperforming in the group stage, and it appears as though this new format allows those down the pecking order an ideal chance to boost their coefficient.

From this season onwards, 36 teams play in the group phase, up from 32 in the old format. This increase in participants means that two extra places will go to the best-performing leagues in Europe every season.

Depending on the performances of clubs in certain leagues, an extra place could be awarded – meaning the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle United could have an extra chance to return to the top table of European football via the league. But how does it all work?

Where do the extra spots come from?

Due to the expansion from 32 to 36 teams in the Champions League from the 2024/25 season onwards, there are four more potential paths to the final tournament.

Two spots are reserved for the winners of the Champions League and Europa League winners, though these teams will typically claim their UCL berth via their league position, meaning two sides from further down the team coefficient ranking can advance to the league phase.

With Atalanta winning the Europa League and finishing 4th in Serie A, their place was taken by Benfica, who were the team with the highest five-year coefficient ranking that had not already qualified.

After La Liga champions Real Madrid won the Champions League in June, their slot went to the highest-ranked domestic champion not to qualify automatically – Shakhtar Donetsk.

The other two slots are determined by nations’ collective performances in Europe, meaning it may not be clear which leagues will be awarded another Champions League slot until deep into the season.

Which nations get the extra Champions League spots?

The two remaining berths are allocated via UEFA’s European Performance Spots.

These places will go to the associations with the best overall performance by their clubs in the previous season. Last season, Dortmund reached the Champions League final, Bayern Munich reached the semis, and Bayer Leverkusen reached the final of the Europa League, giving Germany one of the two extra places available.

Elsewhere, Bologna secured fifth place in Serie A, which allowed them to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League for the first time. This was due to Atalanta winning the Europa League, Fiorentina reaching the Conference League final and Inter, Napoli and Lazio reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

How the coefficient ranking is determined

Regardless of the European competition, each win is worth two coefficient points, a draw gets you one point, and you get nothing for a defeat. Penalty shootouts are not taken into account, with the score after 120 minutes being used as the determining factor if a game reaches extra-time.

Points gained by all clubs from one nation are added together before being divided by the number of clubs that country has in Europe that season.

For example, if a country scores 70 coefficient points and has six teams in Europe, its score would be 11.667. The two nations with the highest values are then granted an additional Champions League spot through their domestic league.

How the bonus points system works

From this season onwards, performance in the Champions League has become more valuable compared to the Europa League and Conference League.

Previously, the maximum number of bonus points for a club in Europe’s premier club competition was 12. Now, 18 bonus points are on offer, while 10 are available in the Europa League and 6 in the Conference League (up from eight and four respectively).

Every club that participates in the Champions League now gets an extra six bonus points just for taking part in the group stage, up from four in the previous format.

Therefore, countries with more teams in the Champions League are more likely to end up near the top of the yearly ranking.

Current 2024/25 coefficient standings

In the current race for the European Performance Spots, England is in a commanding position to secure five Champions League places in the Premier League. No English club has been knocked out of Europe so far this season, with only Manchester City having to undergo a knockout play-off tie.

Italy and Spain are in a tense tussle for one of the extra Champions League places next term. Bologna have been knocked out of the competition, while Juventus, Atalanta and Milan have to negotiate the play-offs to make the last 16 of the Champions League, while Roma play Porto in the Europa League.

Girona failed to qualify for the knockout stages, but Real Madrid, Real Betis and Real Sociedad all face play-off clashes to make the last-16 in the Champions League and Europa League.

Germany – recipient of an extra slot last year – looks to be all but out of contention. Three Bundesliga teams are out of Europe already, with another three facing knockout matches.

As it stands, Portugal, France and Belgium all have outside chances of sneaking into the top two.

Current Premier League standings

Liverpool and Arsenal may be battling it out for the title, but the race for fifth place in the table is arguably the most exciting aspect of the top flight right now.

At the time of writing, Man City are in fifth spot, currently sitting with 41 points from their 24 matches. Newcastle have the same number of points, while seventh-placed Bournemouth trail the pair by a solitary point.

Further down the table, Aston Villa have 37 points, Fulham 36 and Brighton and Hove Albion 34. It might be unlikely that the latter two secure Champions League football next season.

This race for the coveted fifth place is certainly heating up as the league enters the final few months. Securing Champions League football could give the majority of these teams a major financial boost.

They will all hope the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal progress as far as they can in Europe to ensure there is an extra route into the Champions League.

8 reasons Arsenal can still win the Premier League title

Liverpool may be racing ahead, but there is still cause for optimism in north London.

Chelsea now join Barcelona in race to sign £67m Liverpool player

Chelsea are now believed to be targeting a Liverpool star for manager Enzo Maresca, with the Premier League side joining Barcelona in a race for his signature this summer.

Chelsea eye new attackers for Enzo Maresca

The west Londoners were forced to cope without Noni Madueke, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson against Aston Villa on Saturday, who all missed the clash through injury, with Chelsea short of attacking options overall.

João Félix’s loan move to Milan left Maresca another body short in the final third, and while the aforementioned trio are expected back after the international break (Maresca), this current situation brings attention to Chelsea’s failure to land another attacker in January.

Chelsea did hold some talks over Mathys Tel, who eventually ended up joining Tottenham on loan, and were linked with a host of other high-profile centre-forwards, but Maresca must now wait until the summer before BlueCo can take action and help to reinforce his squad.

It has been reported that Chelsea have laid some groundwork over a move for Liam Delap, who’s been on fire for Ipswich this season, while RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP hero Viktor Gyokeres are also under consideration (Simon Phillips).

More left-field targets are emerging on a weekly basis, with a report now sharing Chelsea’s interest in Liverpool forward Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool vs Wolves

The Colombian has scored 13 goals and registered three assists in all competitions under Arne Slot, playing a key role for Liverpool throughout 2024/25, but he’s out of contract in 2027 and his future has been the source of some speculation recently.

The Reds would want as much as £67m to part company with Diaz, according to TEAMtalk, with Chelsea said to be on red alert over his potential capture.

Chelsea join Barcelona in race to sign Liverpool star Luis Diaz

A Spanish media source reports that Chelsea have joined Barça in the race to sign Diaz from Liverpool, and both sides view the South American as an ideal potential capture.

While a move to one of La Liga’s biggest clubs may well prove tempting for Diaz, a switch to London and remaining in the Premier League cannot be discounted at this stage.

Luis Diaz and Arne Slot

Despite his star player status, the 28-year-old earns just £55,000 per week at Anfield, with Diaz said to be keen on signing improved terms. Until he puts pen to paper, Diaz’s future will remain at the centre of reports linking him with a Merseyside exit.

One thing is certain: Liverpool won’t want to lose the player if they can help it.

“The speed he has is insane,” said former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp during Diaz’s first season at the club after he joined them from FC Porto in 2022.

“He gets our football 100 per cent. We thought we saw that at Porto. He fits like a glove to our football and that’s really, really special.”

While the search for a new head coach continues, Chivas have reportedly secured their first reinforcement for the upcoming Apertura 2025 and the Leagues Cup. The Guadalajara-based club has reached a verbal agreement with PSV Eindhoven’s Richard Ledezma, according to César Luis Merlo.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, but of Mexican descent, the 24-year-old right-back is expected to join Chivas on a contract through June 2029. Although the club has yet to confirm the transfer officially, all indications suggest the deal will be announced in the coming days.

Ledezma began his professional career in 2018 with Real Monarchs in the United Soccer League (USL). He later joined PSV’s youth system and broke into the Dutch club’s first team in 2020. In 2023, he spent time on loan with New York City FC in Major League Soccer before returning to PSV, where he featured regularly in the 2024–25 season. This year alone, he has played 24 matches in the Eredivisie, 11 in the UEFA Champions League, and three in the KNVB Cup.

While Ledezma’s arrival adds depth to the squad, the coaching vacancy remains unresolved. Chivas recently saw their deal with former Manchester City assistant Domènec Torrent fall through, and negotiations with Gabriel Milito are ongoing. In the meantime, sporting director Javier Mier continues to work on strengthening the roster.

AFPDID YOU KNOW?

Ledezma has only made one senior appearance for the United States national team — a friendly match in 2020, where the U.S. defeated Panama 6-2. Although he also represented the U.S. at various youth levels, he hasn’t been called up since that lone senior cap. Because it was not an official competitive match, Ledezma could still be eligible to switch allegiance and represent Mexico in the future.

The team is set to return to training on May 21 to begin preparations for preseason. As of now, Chivas have only confirmed one departure: the sale of Mateo Chávez to AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie. Most of the current squad, which failed to qualify for the Clausura 2025 Liguilla, is expected to remain intact.

One key question remains — the future of veteran forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández. While no official decision has been announced, early signs suggest he will stay with the club.

Chivas is set to begin its Leagues Cup campaign on July 31 against the New York Red Bulls. The Guadalajara club will also face Charlotte FC and FC Cincinnati in the group stage.

More than the WPL money, 'general growth of women's cricket' is important for Ellyse Perry

“The discussion from us as a group was just what it’s going to do for the game, not so much what it’s going to do for an individual”

Ashleigh Gardner: ‘Actually dreamt about the WPL auctions the other night’

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has been tipped to be “a gamechanger” for women’s cricket, and the player auction was all the talk a couple of days ago, but that isn’t the focus of Australia’s current T20 World Cup squad. They were training in Gqeberha as the bidding began on Monday, Ellyse Perry, who found out after the practice session that she had been picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 1.7 crore (AUS$ 207,000.), said. Another 13 Australians – 11 of those also in South Africa with Perry – were sold in the auction, which she admitted was a “weird” concept in itself.Ashleigh Gardner was the joint-highest earning overseas player alongside England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, going for an eye-watering INR 3.2 crore (US$ 390,000 approx.) to Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians respectively. But prices aside, Perry acknowledged that the growth of the women’s game in India was a big deal.Related

Wareham overcomes the 'dark days' on triumphant return

“From my perspective, I don’t think any of us ever led the conversation in terms of monetary value,” she said. “I think there’s something at play that’s much bigger than that. Of course, remuneration and the chance to earn that kind of money is wonderful, but much larger than that I think is just the general growth of the sport right around the world.”India is kind of, I guess, the spiritual home of cricket in a lot of senses. And I think now that women are starting to have a really strong presence in the Indian market and also in the Indian game, that is so much more important than any kind of dollar value that is placed on any player. So from that perspective, the chat was just around wanting to be involved.”Of course, after the auction, those discussions come in about certain value and how much people are sold for, which in itself is a weird kind of concept to swallow. But yeah, I just think it’s so much bigger than that. The discussion from us as a group was just what it’s going to do for the game, not so much what it’s going to do for an individual.”7:15

‘Alyssa Healy an absolute steal at INR 70 lakh’

The Australians were in a more relaxed position than England, who faced Ireland while the auction was still going on, with some players taking the field already knowing the results and others having to wait until after the match. Perhaps even more timely, on the eve of the auction, Gardner had claimed her first international five-wicket haul as Australia beat New Zealand by 97 runs. And, by the evening after, her team-mates were joking that the treats were on her for the rest of the tour.”Ash is a phenomenal player,” Perry said. “I was fortunate enough to play with Ashleigh in her first WBBL campaign with the [Sydney] Sixers and I don’t think she’s looked back since then. Year on year, she’s just got better and better.”Probably what stands out to me the most now is the contribution that she’s making with her bowling. Added to the obvious power that she possesses as a batter and ability to take games away there, now the consistency in her bowling and what she’s contributing during our fielding innings just makes her such a threat. She has every facet of the game covered off and really is just perfectly built for T20 cricket.”The consistency that she has for that now has probably made her as rich as what she is,” Perry added with a smile.Perry on Wareham: ‘She’s just the most naturally talented and laid-back sort of cricketer that I’ve come across’•AFP/Getty ImagesPerry was also impressed by Georgia Wareham, who made her international return after 16 months out with a knee injury against Bangladesh on Tuesday and bagged three wickets. Wareham will play alongside Gardner at Giants after being bought for the equivalent of nearly US$ 91,000 despite her long spell out of the game.”It was so awesome to see Wolfy play again,” Perry said. “Such a long road back from a really devastating injury. I think any athlete who hears the word ACL in terms of an injury, it’s a pretty tough one to swallow.”To have the patience that she’s had to work as hard as she has and the other part of it is she’s hardly played any games of cricket in the last 16 months and she just comes out and does that. And that’s so Wolfy. She’s just the most naturally talented and laid-back sort of cricketer that I’ve come across. Often after long injuries, it takes a long time to perform again but she’s done it straight away.”Australia and Sri Lanka will both be seeking their third straight wins of the tournament when they meet at St George’s Park on Thursday.
