Narang, Jaiswal re-establish Rest of India's command in the Irani Cup

Services offspinner Pulkit Narang picked up a four-wicket haul to help dismiss Madhya Pradesh for 294 and hand Rest of India a first-innings lead of 190 on the third day of the Irani Cup in Gwalior. Mumbai batter Yashasvi Jaiswal followed up his first-innings double-hundred with a 46-ball half-century to swell Rest of India’s overall lead to 275 at stumps. Jaiswal was unbeaten on 58 along with Abhimanyu Easwaran, who made 26 not out off 51 balls. From an overnight 112 for 3, MP fought their way towards 300, thanks in no small part to Yash Dubey, who scored his fourth first-class ton. However, his dismissal by Narang sparked a collapse as MP lost their last five wickets for 53 runs. Narang also accounted for Saransh Jain, who was the second-highest scorer for MP with 66 off 150 balls. Jain and Dubey added 96 for the sixth wicket before Narang ran through the lower order.Earlier in the day, Harsh Gawli converted his overnight 47 into a half-century, but Navdeep Saini cut his innings short at 54 off 149 balls. Saini, who is working his way back from injury, proved his fitness and form by taking 3 for 56 in 20 overs. As for Narang, he ended with 4 for 65 in 25.5 overs.Rest of India then had a wobble at the start of their second innings, losing their captain Mayank Agarwal for a duck to left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya. However, Jaiswal and Abhimanyu struck up an unbroken 84-run stand for the second wicket off 102 balls to help their team re-establish command over MP. Jaiswal struck eight fours and a six, including three in a row off fast bowler Avesh Khan in the fourth over. Jaiswal was also severe on Ankit Kushwah, taking him for 19 off 13 balls.

Rohit and Kohli left out of squad for T20Is against New Zealand

Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav remain captain and vice-captain of India’s T20I squad•BCCI

India have left Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli out of their T20I squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. KL Rahul is also not in the squad, and while the BCCI put his absence – and that of Axar Patel, from both the ODI and T20I legs of the series – down to family commitments, it gave no specific reason for Rohit, India’s regular all-format captain, and Kohli missing the series. As a result, India’s first-choice top three from their last two T20 World Cups are now missing successive T20I series. This may not yet have a major bearing on India’s long-term future in the format, however. Ahead of the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka, Rohit said the selectors and team management had made it clear to a number of senior players that they would not be able to play all three formats over the next few months for workload-management reasons, with India building up towards the 50-overs World Cup later this year.Related

Hardik Pandya, who captained India in the three T20Is against Sri Lanka earlier this month, will continue to lead the side in the T20I series, which will be played in Ranchi, Lucknow and Ahmedabad from January 27 to February 1, with Suryakumar Yadav as his deputy.Rohit and Kohli are part of the squad for the ODI series that will take place before the T20Is, from January 18 to 24 in Hyderabad, Raipur and Indore.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Prithvi Shaw in, Harshal Patel outThe T20I squad is also notable for the return of opener Prithvi Shaw, who last played for India in July 2021, and whose absence from subsequent squads – particularly in the T20 format – has been a constant source of debate, given his rare ability to provide rapid starts in the powerplay. Shaw forced himself into the reckoning earlier this week by scoring 379 off 383 balls – the second-highest first-class score by an Indian batter – for Mumbai against Assam in the Ranji Trophy.Left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took a Player-of-the-Match-winning 3 for 51 in the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Thursday, is also back in the T20I squad, having last featured for India in that format in August 2022. He is one of two wristspinners in the squad along with Yuzvendra Chahal.Sanju Samson, who was ruled out midway through the T20I series against Sri Lanka with a knee injury, remains out of the squad – the BCCI release did not provide an update on his fitness. Jitesh Sharma, who replaced him, remains in the squad as one of two wicketkeeping options alongside Ishan Kishan.Fast bowler Harshal Patel, who played only the first T20I against Sri Lanka, has been left out of the squad.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

KS Bharat called up to ODI squadWith Rahul sitting out the ODIs, India have called up the uncapped KS Bharat as a second wicketkeeper alongside Kishan. Bharat is also part of India’s squad for the first two Tests against Australia in February – he is expected to contest the lead wicketkeeper role with Kishan in the absence of regular keeper Rishabh Pant, who has undergone knee ligament surgery after suffering a serious car crash in late December. In Axar’s absence, meanwhile, the selectors have called on a like-for-like replacement in Shahbaz Ahmed – both are allrounders who bat left-handed and bowl left-arm spin. Shahbaz has been part of the white-ball mix in recent months, and has played three ODIs, most recently in December on the tour of Bangladesh. Also back in the squad is fast-bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur, who was left out of the series against Sri Lanka. Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh, who was part of the ODI squad against Sri Lanka but didn’t get a chance in the starting XI, misses out – he remains part of the T20I squad, however.Jasprit Bumrah, who was initially named in the ODI squad against Sri Lanka before pulling out before the start of the series – he is on the road to recovery from a long-term back injury – is not part of either white-ball squad or the squad for the first two Tests against Australia.

Man City send officials to watch £6m gem who Arsenal scouts are tracking

Manchester City have sent scouts to watch a 20-year-old midfielder as they look to get ahead of Arsenal in the race to win his signature, according to a new report.

Multiple exits on the cards for Man City this summer

It was a very busy January for the Blues, as they brought in Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico Gonzalez, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah. And given how the season looks set to end for City, it could be a busy summer with Pep Guardiola eyeing plenty more arrivals.

Several key players currently at the Etihad will need to be moved on as a trophy-laden cycle comes to its end, and reports suggest talisman Kevin de Bruyne is close to finalising terms with MLS outfit San Diego when his contract at City expires at the end of the campaign.

As well as De Bruyne potentially leaving, FourFourTwo have reported that fellow midfielder Mateo Kovacic could make a move to Atletico Madrid, as City may be willing to let the player leave as they look to freshen the squad up. The one hurdle may be that the Blues are demanding £25 million for the Croatian, which could be steep for Diego Simeone’s side.

Meanwhile, City have held talks over signing Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, as Ederson is reportedly set for a move to the Saudi Pro League. Ederson was close to a move last summer, but it didn’t work out. However, given how this season has gone, City could see it as the right time to part ways and freshen up their goalkeeper options.

Man City send scouts to watch £6m Nico Paz

And while a few players potentially edge closer to a City exit, according to Caught Offside, Man City are interested in signing attacking midfielder Nico Paz, who has impressed in Italy with Como this season.

Paz has left many impressed with his performances for the newly promoted Italian side, and now City have started to take notice. The report states that Guardiola is taking a closer look at the 20-year-old, and officials from the Etihad have watched Paz in action in recent games against Napoli and Fiorentina, where he managed to grab a goal and an assist.

However, City are not alone in their pursuit of the young star, as Arsenal have also been scouting Paz, as they are looking to sign a new attacking midfielder. Any deal is complicated because Real Madrid, who Paz left last summer, have a buy-back option for €8 million (over £6 million) this summer, which will rise gradually each year. The Spanish giants will also retain 50% of any future sale to a third club if they decide not to buy Paz back.

Paz has been among the goals and assists in a Como side that is fighting to beat the drop, so it is no surprise he is gaining attention. He still has a lot of development to do, but the Blues could see Paz as someone who could be a future replacement for De Bruyne, as his versatility would make him an ideal Guardiola signing.

Expert gives update on £26k-a-week Rangers star’s injury before St Mirren

Rangers have been without one of their top attacking talents in recent weeks, but an injury expert has provided a positive update regarding his return date.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers sealed a much-needed 3-1 win away to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon, as Philippe Clement continues to cling onto his job as manager. Next up is the visit of St Mirren in the league this Saturday.

There are many who feel that the Belgian should have been dismissed by now, especially after the humiliating Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen’s Park earlier this month, but those high up at Rangers are continuing to stick by him for the time being.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

The future of Ianis Hagi at Ibrox has also been a talking point of late, with one recent report claiming that he could now depart at the end of the season, with other clubs contemplating making an offer for the Romanian ace.

An exit for Hamza Igamane has been talked up, too, in another worrying development, as Rangers look to retain the services of one of their most important attacking players. Now, a key injury update has emerged regarding another individual who falls into that bracket.

Expert provides key Rangers injury update

Speaking to Ibrox News, Dr Rajpal Brar said that Danilo is unlikely to be fit to start Rangers’ clash with St Mirren this weekend, but the news on his shoulder injury is positive and he could feature.

“Considering he will have missed roughly a month or so, his ramp should take a few matches. The positive news is that this was an upper body, shoulder injury, so he could at least get back to conditioning quicker in the gym compared to a lower-body injury. The process will be tolerating first team training and then bounce minutes. Even if fit, he’s highly unlikely to start the next game.”

Having the £26,000-a-week Danilo back in the fold would be a welcome boost for Clement, with former Rangers winger Neil McCann once saying of him: “I think he’s showing he’s got the movement, the pace and an eye for where he should be.

“The only thing he needs to work on is his end product. He could have easily had five or six goals tonight. Once he gets used to the league and the tempo he looks as if he will become a real good find for Rangers.”

Danilo hasn’t played since the 3-0 win at home to Aberdeen in the middle of January, but his tally of five league goals in just six starts in the competition this season highlights his importance to this Gers side.

Uh oh: Rangers playmaker Clement wants to keep now moving towards Ibrox exit

He could be on the verge of leaving for nothing.

Feb 15, 2025

If the 25-year-old isn’t back in time for the St Mirren game, the hope is that he is available for Rangers’ upcoming Europa League knockout tie, with Clement’s side’s last-16 opponents set to be revealed in the draw on Friday.

The new Fabregas: Arsenal have found a mega £150m star in the making

Arsenal need a striker. That’s probably the most obvious fact in football right now. Across their last two Premier League games they have failed to score, slumping 13 points behind Liverpool in the race for the title.

So, coming into their last-16 tie with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, there was little excitement, expectation, or noise surrounding the Gunners’ hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

An away trip to the Philips Stadion hasn’t been kind to Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, having failed to win there during the course of their last five visits, dating back to 2002.

Well, a spark was found on Tuesday evening, one that was much needed considering the rut they’ve found themselves in.

This was an Arsenal side with purpose, with swagger, with energy. It was like watching the first few years of Arteta’s reign, just without Bukayo Saka in tow.

In truth, the performance in the Netherlands this week was nothing short of incredible. The Londoners came away from their European exploits with a 7-1 win. It was the biggest away win in the knock-out stages of the competition in its entire history.

The biggest positives from Arsenal's win over PSV

This was a game full of excitement. That’s certainly not a sentence that had been true of Arsenal in February. Yet, a new month brings new hopes and Arteta’s side already have one foot in the door of the quarter-finals where either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid await.

Nonetheless, let’s stay in the present for now as for once, the coaching staff have a number of positives.

The biggest was perhaps the return to form of Martin Odegaard. Before Tuesday, the Norwegian had just one open play goal all season but found the net twice in the second half to cap off what was probably his best display all term.

Declan Rice didn’t find himself on the scoresheet but he was a monster in the middle of the park. He never stopped running and was key in Arsenal opening the scoring, crossing to the back stick where Jurrien Timber made it 1-0 in his homeland.

Myles Lewis-Skelly did have to be withdrawn before the break in fear he would receive another red card, fortunate not to be shown a second yellow at one stage, but his replacement in Riccardo Calafiori only proved how strong Arsenal’s depth is.

Believe it or not, the Italian left-back found the net having surged down the right-hand channel, latching onto a delicious assist from Odegaard before finding the net on his weaker foot.

Also on the score sheet was Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard but the biggest positive was undoubtedly Ethan Nwaneri again. We’re running out of superlatives for him…

Ethan Nwaneri's defining night in Eindhoven

It’s hard to believe that this young lad is just 17 years of age. The footballing world has spoken at great length about Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal over the last year but Nwaneri is also on a path to stardom, having capped off a brilliant 2025 to date by scoring Arsenal’s second of the evening.

Since Saka’s hamstring injury, Arteta has needed players to stand up and in the teenage sensation, they have found another superstar.

Nwaneri is the club’s third-top scorer with eight this term, four of which have come since he became a regular starter during Saka’s absence.

Of course, they miss the Englishman’s dynamism in the final third but Hale End has produced another gem who’s proving he could be every bit as influential in the future.

The scorer of a goal in back to back Champions League ties now, it was another dazzling night for Nwaneri who is emulating some of the best young players we’ve seen in Europe.

Indeed, he became the second-youngest Arsenal player (17 years 348 days) to appear in a Champions League knockout stage game after Cesc Fabregas (17 years 309 days) while the talented youngster is the third English teenager to start a game in the knockout phases of Europe’s premier competition before turning 18 after Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden.

Like Bellingham, who starred for Dortmund in this tournament at the same age, he is certainly following in the £150m-rated megastar’s shoes.

In scoring on Tuesday, Nwaneri became the third youngest scorer in Champions League knockout history behind Bojan Krkic and Bellingham. It’s safe to say he’s pretty damn special.

So, what’s next for this audacious teen? Well, England could be calling. Thomas Tuchel soon names his first squad and you’d be hard-pressed to find many who suggest he isn’t deserving of a place.

After another night where the 17-year-old looked a class above everyone else on the pitch, the Three Lions and indeed Arsenal may have the next Bellingham on their hands; a big-money teenage superstar in the making who’s ready to take European and international football by storm.

Forget Nwaneri: Arsenal's insane Hale Ender is coming for Odegaard's place

If you thought Ethan Nwaneri was Arsenal’s most exciting young talent then think again.

Talks now progressing for £20.8m-a-year Man City star to leave the Etihad

Manchester City have entered a transitional period under Pep Guardiola and more landmark squad changes could be set to occur at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City look to avoid rare trophyless season under Guardiola

Nobody would’ve thought Guardiola could be staring at a trophyless season off the back of his side’s fourth successive Premier League title in 2023/24.

However, the prospect is becoming a more realistic eventuality following the Citizens’ Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid a matter of days ago.

Manchester City managerPepGuardiola and Erling Haaland

Currently, Manchester City are one of the chasing pack for a place in the competition again via league finish rather than challenging for the title, while they were also dumped out of the EFL Cup away to Tottenham Hotspur last October.

Incredibly, the FA Cup is all now that stands between Guardiola and a first campaign without a trophy to his name since 2016/17. Plymouth Argyle await next weekend with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Transitional has become the buzzword at the Etihad amid the highs and lows of recent months. Manchester City’s January signings Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov have helped to raise spirits among supporters, but they will take time to fully adhere to Guardiola’s relentless demands on the pitch.

In contrast, it has perhaps been those within the squad that haven’t hit the heights this season who illustrate more than most that change is afoot at the reigning champions.

Eras do indeed come to an end, but Manchester City supporters will be torn on the prospect of a winning machine being taken apart piece by piece, especially when it comes to key players who could be set for a new challenge.

Kevin De Bruyne closing in on headline Manchester City exit

According to The Boot Room, Manchester City icon Kevin De Bruyne is close to finalising terms over a move to San Diego FC and talks are ‘progressing’ with his long-term future at the Etihad uncertain.

The Belgium international has claimed 14 major honours at the club and delivered some of the greatest moments in their modern history, with 105 goals and 173 assists in 405 appearances across all competitions.

Man City now poised to chase "great" £100m ace in blockbuster summer deal

He could replace Kevin De Bruyne…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 22, 2025

De Bruyne earns £400,000 per week (£20.8 million per year) on the books at Manchester City. Nevertheless, he is wanted to fill one of San Diego’s three Designated Player slots and the Major League Soccer outfit lead in the race to secure his services despite strong admiration from Saudi Pro League clubs.

Manchester City's KevinDeBruyne

His compatriot Charles De Ketelaere has been earmarked as a potential replacement in the event of an emotional departure. Despite his exciting profile, the man he could succeed is someone there simply wouldn’t be a direct replacement for at the Etihad.

Nevertheless, there is a need for fresh blood at Manchester City, especially if they were to lose a player of De Bruyne’s calibre over the next few months.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Williams has emerged as a transfer target for Los Blancos, as a Marca report suggests Barcelona have lost interest in signing the 22-year-old. The winger signed a new deal with Athletic Club last summer, but he has a release clause valued at €58 million.

Valverde believes Williams will remain in Bilbao, however, saying the player is "very happy", and the club wants him to stay. Athletic Club have enjoyed a brilliant season, amassing 70 points in La Liga. Valverde told reporters: "We assume he'll be with us next year, and we want that to be the case. There are always rumors about players, and you know how it is. We're very happy with Nico, and Nico is very happy with us  We hope next year is a great year for Nico, and that he does it here."

Williams will feature in Athletic Club's last game of the season, a home tie against La Liga champions-elect and his longtime suitors, Barcelona. It had been assumed that Williams would eventually turn out for La Blaugrana. Could a stellar display convince either Barça to rekindle their interest in the player, or force Real Madrid to step up their pursuit?

Chelsea must sell Blues dud who's been a worse signing than Mudryk & Nkunku

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku looked as though he could’ve departed during the January transfer window after being touted with a move to various sides.

The French forward, who cost £52m in the summer of 2023, has mainly been an impact player under Enzo Maresca this campaign, starting just six matches in the Premier League.

However, the injury to Nicolas Jackson has allowed for increased minutes in the side, starting each of the past four outings, but only managing to find the back of the net on one occasion.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Nkunku has registered 17 goals in 48 matches but ultimately has been unable to nail down a regular starting role when the squad is fully fit – with the club needing to cash in on him this summer.

That said, considering his relatively impressive record in front of goal, there have been two poorer signings, and they both need to be given the boot…

Mykhailo Mudryk’s stats for Chelsea

In January 2023, Chelsea secured an £88.5m deal for winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk – with real hope and expectation of transforming the club’s attack.

The Blues won the bidding war with fellow English side Arsenal for the 24-year-old, and he looked to be a phenomenal addition after his cameo off the bench against Liverpool for his debut.

He was unable to find the back of the net in any of his first 17 appearances, but registered seven strikes last year in his first full campaign at the Bridge.

This campaign has seen the Ukrainian score three times, but he has been provisionally suspended since December after testing positive for a banned substance – putting his Blues career on hold for now, at least.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

After such an expensive fee was shelled out for his signature, it’s safe to say Mudryk hasn’t lived up to expectations, scoring just 10 goals in his 73 appearances for the club.

However, despite his lack of impact in the capital over recent years, one other first-team member has undoubtedly been a worse addition, with Maresca desperately needing to cash in on him this summer.

The Chelsea player who’s been a worse signing than Mudryk

Over the years, Chelsea have made countless additions to try and catapult themselves back to the top of the Premier League, but have so far been unable to achieve such a feat.

All areas of the pitch have been strengthened as a result of Todd Boehly’s investment, but one department evidently needs more signings – especially after the lack of form of one player.

Maresca has continuously shown faith in goalkeeper Robert Sanchez between the sticks, as seen by his tally of 22 appearances for the Blues throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

The Spaniard joined the club in the summer of 2023 for a reported £25m but has since failed to live up to his huge price tag, often prone to a mistake in recent months.

Whilst he’s been benched for each of the last three games, it’s been something that is deserved when delving into his stats from 2024/25, struggling to offer that presence needed to bolster their defensive record.

The 27-year-old has conceded 27 times in his 21 Premier League outings, an average of 1.3 goals conceded per 90, whilst also only completing 69% of passes, unable to effectively play out from the back – something which Maresca demands from his keepers.

Sanchez has also made five errors leading to goals, the joint-highest of any shot-stopper in the division, undoubtedly costing the Blues in key moments which could affect their chances of securing Champions League football.

Whilst he cost nowhere near as much as Mudryk, the fee paid still looks way too expensive for the lack of impact he’s made on the side, often hindering the squad as a result of his selection.

Maresca has finally made the right decision in opting for Filip Jorgensen ahead of Sanchez in recent games, with the Italian needing to offload him this summer and try to recoup as much of the £25m fee as possible.

Key target for Potter: West Ham well-placed to sign £20k-a-week defender

West Ham United are now well-placed to sign a defender on a free transfer this summer, and he has now emerged as a key target for Graham Potter, according to a report.

West Ham's summer transfer plans

West Ham are currently short on options at striker, with Michail Antonio and Niclas Füllkrug still sidelined due to injuries, and Potter has set out to bolster his attacking options in the summer transfer window.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio

Tammy Abraham is among the main targets under consideration, with a relatively cheap deal likely to be possible due to the Englishman falling down the pecking order at AS Roma, which led to a loan move to AC Milan.

In the same report, it is detailed that the Hammers are also keen on signing a full-back and centre-back this summer, and Genoa’s Koni de Winter has now emerged as a target in the latter position, having made contact to discuss a deal.

Potter tells West Ham board he wants 175-goal striker who Sullivan passed up

Influential figures at the club once chose not to do a deal.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 14, 2025

There have been fewer links to new full-backs in recent times, but a report from Football Insider has now revealed the Irons are looking at options from within the Premier League.

Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters is said to have emerged as a target for West Ham, and they are well-placed to get a deal done this summer, as the right-back is certain to leave the Saints, who are almost certainly set to be relegated.

Southampton'sKyleWalker-Petersapplauds their fans after the match

Walker-Peters has aspirations of getting back into England contention, which means he needs to play at the highest level possible, so dropping down to the Championship isn’t an option.

The full-back is capable of playing on both flanks, making him a versatile option for Potter, and the fact he will be available on a free transfer is particularly appealing, with the Hammers boss now identifying him as a key target.

"Beautiful footballer" Walker-Peters could be a solid signing

Although Southampton are destined to be relegated from the top flight, there are signs the defender could be a solid signing for West Ham, given that he has proven himself in the Premier League over a number of years.

The Englishman has made 142 appearances in the top flight, impressing enough to earn a Three Lions call-up in the 2021-22 campaign.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been a regular starter for the Hammers this season, but the signing of Walker-Peters could provide Potter with a different option, given his tendency to push forward.

Russell Martin has previously insisted the Southampton ace is capable of adding more goal contributions to his game, while also branding him a “beautiful footballer.”

Given that the £20k-per-week defender is set to be available on a free transfer this summer, it is a no-brainer for West Ham to make an approach, and it is promising news they are now positioning themselves to get a deal done.
