Surrey take charge after Tom Lawes four-for limits Somerset

Surrey 138 for 4 (Latham 67*) trail Somerset 170 (Kohler-Cadmore 59, Lawes 4-41)Tom Lawes ran through the top order as Division One leaders Surrey bowled out Somerset for 170 after losing the toss on the opening day of the LV= County Championship match at Taunton. The home side were dismissed in 56.3 overs, 20-year-old seamer Lawes sending back three of the top four on his way to figures of 4 for 41. Tom Kohler-Cadmore top scored with 59. By stumps, Surrey had replied with 138 for 4, Tom Latham leading the way with 67 not out and fellow New Zealand Test player Matt Henry marking the last appearance of a prolific spell in red- and white-ball cricket for Somerset by taking 3 for 26.A day dominated by seam bowling began with Somerset’s total on 12 when Tom Lammonby clipped a Dan Worrall half-volley off his legs straight to Jamie Smith at midwicket. Tom Abell flicked at a leg-side delivery from Lawes and feathered a catch through to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes to make it 32 for 2. With nine runs added, Sean Dickson, on 25, fended at a delivery from Lawes and edged to Latham at second slip.Kohler-Cadmore hit offspinner Will Jacks back over his head for six. But it was a rare moment of cheer for Somerset supporters in a 2,000 crowd at the Cooper Associates County Ground.Soon George Bartlett became a third victim for Lawes, caught by Jacks at third slip. It might have been worse for the hosts as Jacks spilled a sharp chance, diving to his left, to give Kohler-Cadmore a life on 22, Jamie Overton being the unlucky bowler. With his side in trouble, James Rew took 32 balls to get off the mark and was unbeaten on 4 at lunch, which was taken at 85 for four, Kohler-Cadmore having moved to 32. But hopes of a substantial stand between the pair ended soon after the interval when Rew got a top edge aiming to pull a short ball from Jordan Clark and skied a simple catch to Foakes.Kasey Aldridge helped Kohler-Cadmore add 47 for the sixth wicket, contributing 18 before edging Overton, back on his old stamping ground, to Latham in the slips.Kohler-Cadmore’s innings ended in disappointing fashion when he aimed a big shot at a wide delivery from Lawes and dragged the ball onto his stumps. The former Yorkshire player had faced 101 balls, striking seven fours and a six.Craig Overton glanced his first ball from twin brother Jamie to fine leg for four, provoking two unfriendly short balls, the second of which he gloved through to the immaculate Foakes. Henry managed a few belligerent blows before falling for 16 and tea was taken when Ben Green was bowled by a full ball from Worrall.Somerset had batted poorly. But they managed an early breakthrough in the final session when, without a run on the board, Surrey skipper Rory Burns edged a defensive shot off Henry to Overton at second slip. The same combination accounted for Dom Sibley with the total on 15, Overton holding another straightforward chance off Henry, who was maintaining an exemplary line and length.Smith narrowly avoided the same fate when, on 4, he edged just short of Overton, as Henry finished a superb opening spell with 2 for 16, ten of those runs coming off the last of his seven overs.Momentum changed when Smith hit boundaries off four successive balls from Overton, who had switched to the River End. Batting started to look comfortable under cloudless skies as Latham helped put together a half-century stand in 67 balls. It was a surprise when Green broke through in the opening over of his first Championship appearance of the season. Having proved a golden arm in the Blast, the medium-pacer had Smith caught at midwicket by Lammonby, stretching out his left arm.Henry’s return to the attack saw him strike again with his third ball, Foakes nicking a defensive shot to wicketkeeper Rew to make it 95 for 4. Then Latham, on 43, survived a chance to Dickson at third slip off Overton. The experienced Kiwi left-hander went on to an 83-ball fifty, well supported by Jacks as Surrey closed just 32 runs behind.

Felipe Alves projetou a partida.

WI switch to T20 mode as CPL stars look to topple India

India are missing several regulars, meaning Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar will all be looking to make a mark

Jaffer: Tilak Varma brings versatility to India’s XI

Big picture: IPL heroes vs CPL starsThough West Indies failed to qualify for the main event of the last T20 World Cup – and the upcoming ODI World Cup – their T20I side seems to be in better health than their ODI and Test teams. Either side of the T20 World Cup’s first round in 2022, West Indies challenged New Zealand in a 2-1 series defeat at home, and beat South Africa 2-1 away. They will be bolstered further by the return of Nicholas Pooran, who propelled MI New York to the MLC title last Sunday with a sensational 137 not out off 55 balls. Allrounders Jason Holder, Odean Smith and Akeal Hosein are also back in the mix.India will be without Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj for the T20I leg of the West Indies and USA tours, but their line-up still drips with power and class, thanks to their IPL heroes. After having lit up his Test debut with 171 in Dominica, Yashasvi Jaiswal could potentially make his T20I debut on Thursday in Tarouba, and open alongside Shubman Gill. There could also be a debut for Tilak Varma, who has been the engine room of Mumbai Indians’ middle order since Hardik Pandya moved to Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Varma will now combine with Pandya to marshal India’s middle order.Related

He had also been dropped from the ODI side during the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. But Powell is now set to return, this time as the captain of the T20I team, and with a point to prove – particularly against the spinners. Powell has a strike rate of only 115.03 while facing spin in T20 cricket, while that number jumps up to 153.20 against pace.Mukesh Kumar had to slog for years to make it to India’s squad, but if he gets picked on Thursday, he will end up making his Test, ODI and T20I debuts in a fortnight in the West Indies. Mukesh usually operates in the lower 130kph range, but he can get the ball to skid and seam off the pitch like he did in the ODI series decider in Tarouba on Tuesday. With a number of senior quicks absent once again, Mukesh is likely to get a good run in the five-match T20I series.Team news: Will India pick an extra spinner? This will be West Indies’ first T20I under coach Daren Sammy, but there might not be too many changes from the team that toppled South Africa in South Africa. ODI captain Shai Hope might compete with Johnson Charles for the No.3 spot. West Indies will look up to the returning Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer to counter India’s spinners. Hosein could be West Indies’ main spinner after having returned from the MLC.West Indies (probable): 1 Brandon King, 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Johnson Charles/Shai Hope (wk), 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Rovman Powell (capt), 7 Roston Chase, 8 Jason Holder, 9 Romario Shepherd/Odean Smith, 10 Akeal Hosein, 11 Alzarri Joseph/Oshane Thomas1:13

If the pitch that was used for the final ODI is rolled out once again, India might consider bringing in an extra spinner. And it remains to be seen whether the visitors can fit both Kishan and Samson in their XI.India (probable): 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Ishan Kishan/Sanju Samson (wk), 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Suryakumar Yadav, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Yuzvendra Chahal/Ravi Bishnoi, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Mukesh Kumar/Umran Malik/Avesh KhanPitch and conditions: Rain could interrupt the gameThe Brian Lara Cricket Academy has hosted just one T20I so far, in 2022, when India piled up 190 for 6, and then defended it with considerable ease against West Indies. The Tarouba pitch is usually friendly to batters, but a used one could offer more assistance to the bowlers. The forecast for Thursday isn’t particularly promising, with a 40% chance of rain.Stats and trivia Suryakumar Yadav has a strike rate of 175.76 in T20Is – the highest among all batters who have faced at least 250 balls in the format. Holder (53) is two wickets away from surpassing Samuel Badree (54) as West Indies’ second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is. Dwayne Bravo tops this list with 78 strikes. India are set to play their 200th T20I on Thursday. Only Pakistan (223) have played more T20Is than India.

Invincibles keep title defence alive through Kapp's fireworks

Phoenix remain winless despite Devine’s valiant half-century

Oval Invincibles kept their title defence alive with an impressive 10-run win over Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston.Invincibles overpowered the struggling home side after piling up 142 for 5 thanks to Marizanne Kapp’s blistering 64 not out off 40 balls and Lauren Winfield-Hill’s composed 41 off 33 balls. The Phoenix reply was given a thrilling launch by Sophie Devine but after she fell to Ryana MacDonald-Gay for 53 off 34 balls, the chase lost impetus. Phoenix fell short on 132 for 6 and remain rooted to the foot of the table, still without a win from a bitterly disappointing campaign.Invincibles, meanwhile, are right back in the mix after victory from a game they dominated from ball one. Put in, they started solidly with openers Winfield-Hill and Suzie Bates – who will captain for the rest of the season after Dane van Niekerk’s injury – adding 31 in 27 balls, assisted by some untidy fielding.Katie Levick returned economical figures including two wickets in two balls•ECB/Getty Images

Their progress was stalled by Katie Levick who broke through with wickets in successive balls on the way to taking two wickets for just one run in her first set. Levick turned one past the charging Bates for Amy Jones to complete a simple stumping before Alice Capsey attempted to cut her first ball and nicked it to the wicketkeeper. That untidy fielding included a reprieve for Winfield-Hill, who was dropped on 9 by Sterre Kalis at backward point off Tess Flintoff, and the opener made Phoenix pay in a stand of 59 in 42 balls with Kapp. After Winfield-Hill lifted Hannah Baker to long on, Paige Scholfield kept the rate high with a nine-ball 17 before Kapp took the total from decent to daunting with a ferocious late onslaught. The South African posted a 34-ball half-century as she smashed most of the 26 which came from the last ten balls.Related

Phoenix needed a flying start and Devine supplied it with an exhibition of clean hitting which saw her side race to 50 in just 26 balls. Her second six took her to a 26-ball half-century including 40 in fours and sixes. It was high-quality striking which lifted the home fans’ hopes of a win to keep their campaign alive but Devine’s next attempt to land a six, off MacDonald-Gay, found only the calm hands of Kapp at long leg. Amy Jones soon chopped MacDonald-Gay to short third man and Erin Burns’ counter-attack was terminated by a straight ball from Scholfield as the required rate escalated. When Flintoff charged and missed at Scholfield, 39 were needed from 14 balls. It proved far too many as Invincibles closed out a much-needed win.

Celtic to offer "amazing" 112-career goal star new deal after Desmond chat

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has his side on course to win a domestic treble and they could be set to strengthen their hand by offering one of their stars a bumper new deal at Parkhead, per reports.

Celtic's main summer priorities begin to emerge

Everyone has an off-day, and it is fair to say Celtic endured one in their Scottish Premiership defeat to Rangers before the international break, albeit they had several key figures unavailable for selection.

However, it did serve as a valuable reminder not to rest on their laurels. As such, it appears Brendan Rodgers has started to make inroads on potential summer signings.

Brendan Rodgers

According to reports, Celtic are eyeing a surprise move for Liverpool outcast Wataru Endo, though the Japan international also has interest from Fulham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich Town and AC Milan.

Continuing the theme of prospective additions, the Bhoys have Augsburg’s Elvis Rexhbecaj and former defender Kristoffer Ajer on their shortlist. The former has previously worked alongside Arne Engels in the engine room, which may throw up a compelling scenario as Rodgers aims to maximise the compatibility of his existing pool.

From an internal standpoint, Celtic could have a fight on their hands to retain star assets. Reo Hatate and Nicolas Kuhn are bound to attract admirers, while Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston’s solidity within the backline is something the Bhoys will be reticent to lose before next season’s Champions League qualifiers.

Looking to protect the club from losing premium talent, Rodgers has now detailed discussions over a new deal for one of his most impressive performers this term.

Brendan Rodgers wants new Daizen Maeda contract at Celtic

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before the Bhoys took on Heart of Midlothian, Rodgers revealed that Celtic want to tie Daizen Maeda down to a new contract following his excellent run of form and he has spoken to Dermot Desmond about the potential scope for his renewal.

He stated: “Absolutely, if there is that possibility to do that. I’ve spoken with Dermot (Desmond) and the club and spoken with the player. Hopefully in the future that is something that can be done.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant for us this season. Wherever he’s played, however he’s played, he’s had an amazing season. So of course you would love to tie up one of your best players.”

In the form of his life, Maeda has registered 30 goals and nine assists in 43 appearances this campaign. Considering that his career tally sits at the 112 mark, that goes some way to showing how prolific he has been in green and white of late.

Adam Idah has failed to break the Japan international’s hold on a starting slot through the middle, which is a testament to his work in the centre-forward role since Kyogo Furuhashi’s departure.

Taking proactive steps, Celtic will hope they can secure his future on a new long-term agreement to ward off advances from suitors once the window opens.

More clean sheets than Pope: Newcastle now racing to sign £29m "revelation"

Following an inconsistent campaign, Nick Pope could find himself replaced at Newcastle United with the Magpies reportedly racing to sign a goalkeeper worth £29m this summer.

Newcastle battling to sign Pope upgrade

Since returning from injury, there’s been a number of question marks over whether Pope should still be Newcastle’s No 1. The England international has had several troubles with the ball at his feet for some time, and as those at St James’ Park look to make a swift return to the Champions League, they could seek an instant upgrade this summer.

On that front, the main name mentioned across the last few months has been James Trafford. The Burnley shot-stopper has been excellent in the Championship this season and is undoubtedly a player who should be playing in the Premier League. Having reportedly had personal terms in place for some time with Newcastle, he could finally complete his move to Tyneside this summer.

That said, Burnley’s potential promotion back to the Premier League could yet throw a spanner in the works – potentially forcing the Magpies to turn towards Serie A and another emerging star.

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are now racing to sign Mile Svilar from AS Roma, who has recently stalled contract talks at the Italian club amid interest from St James’ Park, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Mile Svilar for AS Roma.

Whilst his current deal doesn’t expire until 2027, Roma have been keen to tie their goalkeeper down to fresh terms in what has proven to be more difficult than perhaps expected. Reportedly valued at €35m (£29m) if he does depart this summer, Newcastle could swoop in and sign the Italians’ contract rebel.

Given that Svilar is just 25 years old, Eddie Howe would be getting a shot-stopper at the peak of his powers and an instant upgrade on current No 1 Pope this summer.

"Revelation" Svilar is one to watch

Although his career hasn’t always taken the linear path towards success, Svilar is the undisputed starter in Rome these days and could yet have the most important decision of his career to make when the summer arrives. It’s then that Newcastle could welcome an upgrade on Pope and their new No 1 for years to come at St James’ Park.

The numbers don’t lie and represent exactly how Svilar could improve Howe’s side, combining his shot-stopping talent with his composed ball-playing ability. Dubbed a “revelation” by analyst Ben Mattinson last season, that verdict remains true even now a year on.

When the summer arrives, Newcastle should make their move as soon as they can in an attempt to beat Manchester City to Svilar’s signature. He ticks every box for what Howe needs. The Roma star is still in his prime, has no troubles on the shot-stopping front and has that key modern-day ability on the ball that Pope arguably lacks.

Whether the Magpies can lure Svilar into a move over the likes of Manchester City remains to be seen, however.

NWSL side San Diego Wave confirmed the transfer of Mexico international and star player Maria Sanchez to Liga MX Femenil side Tigres UANL. The 29-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Mexican club, returning to her native country to continue her career.

“When the opportunity came to return to Tigres, I had to do a lot of inner searching, and I ultimately decided that returning to Liga MX Femenil and Tigres specifically was the best course of action for my career,” Sanchez said in a statement on Monday.

Sanchez joined the Wave last summer via trade from the Houston Dash, where she had been on a $1.5M contract, then considered the richest in the league. Across 40 appearances with the Wave, Sanchez scored nine goals and recorded seven assists. With the Dash, she had eight goals and 14 assists across 62 matches.

Sanchez was slated to be a key player for the the Wave, on a deal through 2026 with a club option for 2027. However, she fell out of favor under new manager Jonas Eidevall in recent months. She started against the Washington Spirit on Sunday in her final game for the club – a 0-0 draw.

Internationally, she has made more than 70 appearances for Mexico, while in 2015, she was the second-youngest player on their World Cup roster.

“I want to take a moment to thank the fans and the entire San Diego Wave organization for the incredible support you have given me,” said Sanchez. “It has been an honor to represent this club and be part of such a special group. San Diego has been a place where I have continued to grow and evolve in my career, and I am so grateful for all the memories and experiences I will take with me."

WHAT SAN DIEGO SAID

”We want to thank María for all her contributions to the Wave,” said Camille Ashton, GM and sporting director. “When the opportunity presented itself for her to return to Tigres, she expressed her interest to rejoin the program. We respect and support her decision and wish her all the best moving forward.”

Liam Livingstone: 'I can be a massive asset to this team'

Liam Livingstone is a man for a good time, not a long time. His 52 off 40 balls in an eight-wicket defeat to New Zealand on Friday was the second-longest innings of his 47-match England career, three balls behind the whirlwind 103 against Pakistan that marked his international breakthrough two years ago.It was a timely re-statement of his credentials in 50-over cricket after a quiet summer, with England due to finalise their World Cup squad in the next couple of weeks. Before his innings in Cardiff, Livingstone had not scored a half-century in any form of the game since the IPL in May and said that spending some time in the middle had done him “the world of good”.”This is my role: I’m somebody that comes in towards the end of the innings,” Livingstone said, having walked out at No. 6 in the 38th over. “I’m not going to be someone who bats at No. 3 for England in ODI cricket.”Livingstone rushed back from an ankle injury last year in order to feature in England’s T20 World Cup win in Australia and the issue flared up again earlier this year, delaying his arrival at the IPL. He also suffered a knee injury on Test debut in Pakistan in December, and said that he had been playing while “half-cooked” in the T20 Blast.Related

“It’s not always ideal to play when you’re injured and get yourself out of form,” he said. “That sort of stuck with me through the Hundred and the T20s [against New Zealand] so I’ve been crying out for a bit of time in the middle. I had a bit more time in the middle today and, as it went on, I felt like I was moving better, I was seeing the ball better.”He briefly held his back while bowling and could be rested in Sunday’s second ODI at the Ageas Bowl – though is not thought to be a serious fitness doubt for the rest of the series.”I’ve not played 50-over cricket for 18 [14] months,” he said. “I’ve had two pretty big injuries… I feel like I’m finally getting back to my best. Hopefully these games will help me get closer to that. Fifty-over cricket is a different animal [to T20] on your body.”When he enjoyed his golden 2021 summer, which included that T20 century against Pakistan, a dominant run of form in the Hundred and a straight six off Haris Rauf that cleared the football stand at Headingley, Livingstone exuded a self-assured confidence that he has found difficult to recapture in the last two years. But there were glimpses of it on Friday, not least when he hit Kyle Jamieson for three consecutive sixes, two over the leg side and one back over his head, towards the River Taff. Livingstone has been playing golf with Jos Buttler of late, the pair styling themselves as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka respectively; they translated their power-hitting into a partnership worth 77 off 59 balls.”Sometimes, without the volume in the middle, it can be pretty difficult to just walk in and smack the ball out of the park without a lot of confidence in the middle behind you,” Livingstone said.”I really pride myself on being someone that can change a game; the more I can do it like I did today, over an extended period, the bigger asset I’ll be to this one-day team… I know that when I’m at my best, I can be a massive asset to this team.”But it is Livingstone’s bowling that makes him “a key part” of England’s set-up heading into the World Cup, according to Eoin Morgan. Speaking on Sky Sports, Morgan said: “It’s his all-round ability: in the field, he’s unbelievably good, but also his ability to bowl wristspin and fingerspin makes him almost a dead-cert to play every game.”His versatlity ensures that England will retain their balance even with Ben Stokes playing as a specialist batter, with a frontline bowling option in their top six on top of Joe Root’s offbreaks.Livingstone conceded 47 in 7.4 wicketless overs on Friday, with his figures dented by a late flurry from Daryl Mitchell. He said he is still in “a development phase” having made a minor technical tweak in his action – “trying to hold my front side as long as I can” – while working with Jeetan Patel at Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred.”I work on my bowling to become a genuine allrounder,” he said. “It doesn’t come as naturally to me as batting, but it was nice that the first few overs came out really well. [I’m trying to] be more of a threat rather than just someone who bowls really quick. I only made the change about three weeks ago.”It’s a technical thing I’ve been working on to try and get a bit more shape on the ball, to ultimately try and get more wickets and become a bigger threat. I was just fed up of being someone who bowls flat into the pitch and gets milked… I’m just trying to evolve as a bowler, which will ultimately make me a better cricketer.”
