Mushfiqur Rahim to miss Bangladesh's game against India

Mushfiqur Rahim will miss Bangladesh’s Asia Cup Super Four match against India, scheduled for Friday in Colombo, after being “granted an extension of leave” by the BCB to be with his family. He had returned to Dhaka after Bangladesh’s last match, against Sri Lanka on September 9, to be with his wife for the birth of their second child, and was initially expected to rejoin the team for the India match, Bangladesh’s last in the competition.”Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still recovering [after giving birth], and he needs to be by her side and with their children at this time,” BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said in a statement. “We fully understand his situation and have decided to permit him to skip the game.”Bangladesh’s slim hopes of qualifying for the final of the Asia Cup were dashed once India beat Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Colombo. The winners of the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game on Thursday will join India in the final, to be played on Sunday. And in case of an abandonment, Sri Lanka will go through by virtue of their superior net run-rate.It has been a poor Asia Cup for Bangladesh, where the dominant win against Afghanistan in the group stage was their only performance of note. On that occasion, they scored 334 for 5 batting first courtesy centuries from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto. But they have lost their other three games, twice to Sri Lanka and once to Pakistan, convincingly.Mushfiqur had been one of their better performers with the bat, slotting in behind Shanto and Mehidy on the list of top run-getters for the team with 131 from four innings at an average of 32.75, with the 64 against Pakistan his best outing.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Williams broke through Athletic Club's first team in the 2021-22 season. However, it was not before the 2024 Euro that he truly started counting amongst the world's deadliest wingers. The Pamplona-born forward was simply breathtaking for Spain down the left flank and played a major role in the nation's triumph at the tournament. Last season, he scored 11 goals in all competitions for Bilbao and is now expected to complete his move to Barcelona in July.

  • WHAT LUIS FIGO SAID

Speaking to , Figo said: "There are a lot of players I like. I'd definitely sign Nico Williams. He's a gem. And in the end, the price, considering what we're paying today, seems reasonable to me. Because of his quality and also because of his youth."

Figo further reflected on which quality of Williams he wish he could have had as a player. He added: "We're different players. He's a player I really like because of his position. I prefer the wingers where I've played. But I wasn't as fast as him; I wish I had been. I'm speaking from a market perspective, because for value and price, I think he's a bargain."

Shan Masood's 192 puts Yorkshire in total command against Glamorgan

Carlson half-century resists but huge deficit remains on cards

ECB Reporters Network11-Sep-2023Glamorgan 150 for 6 (Carlson 53*) trail Yorkshire 500 (Masood 192, Bean 93, Hill 71) by 350 runsYorkshire skipper Shan Masood extended his highest score for the county to 192 as he led his side to maximum batting points against Glamorgan on the second day of their LV= County Championship clash at Sophia Gardens. The Pakistani Test star dominated the day once again as he built on his overnight tally of 113. That had led his side to an overnight score of 330 for 3, which then grew to 500 before their first innings ended with a run out in the 122nd over.Yorkshire then tightened their grip on the game by dismissing six home batsmen before the end of the second day to leave the Welsh county reeling at 150 for 6, still trailing by 350 runs and potentially facing the follow-on. A battling, unbeaten half-century from Kiran Carlson kept Glamorgan’s hopes aliveMasood was at the heart of his side’s third score of 500 this summer and he brought up his 150 off 191 balls with 15 fours. He was finally beaten eight runs short of what would have been his third championship double century – he scored two for Derbyshire in 2022 – when he was caught by Sam Northeast off the bowling of James Harris. He enjoyed two century partnerships – 127 with Finlay Bean and 132 with George Hill – and put on 53 for the sixth wicket with Matthew Revis as the Yorkshire batsmen dominated the home bowling.Yorkshire lost George Hill for 71, Jonny Tattersall for six and Revis for 28 in the morning session as they went into lunch have secured their five batting points by reaching 448 for 6 from 107 overs. No sooner had Masmood departed, than Jordan Thompson went the very next ball from Harris, and it only took Glamorgan a further five overs to mop up the tail. It was still not enough, though, to earn them the three bowling points they needed to keep alive their outside hopes of staying in the promotion race.Midway through the day the news came through that Durham had gained promotion to Division One due to Leicestershire’s failure to earn any batting bonus points against Sussex. The north-east county need a maximum of five points from their last two games to seal the Division Two title. After suffering defeat at Worcester last week, the target for Glamorgan was to win the game with a full set of bonus points, but set the tall order of chasing 500 they then got off to a poor start with the bat.Zain ul Hassan was bowled by the last ball of the fifth over from Ben Coad for eight and when the experienced Colin Ingram had his bails sent flying in the air by Jordan Thompson for five three overs later, Glamorgan were struggling at 19 for 2.By the end of play they had were reduced to six down after Dom Bess had clean bowled Sam Northeast for 16, Revis had ended his first over by removing Eddie Byrom for 40 and then had Billy Root caught behind for four. The Yorkshire pace man ended the day for 3 for 20 from his five overs.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kelly spent the second half of the 2024-25 season with the north London club, whose ranks she came through as a young girl. The winger had found herself out of favour at Manchester City, a situation that also led to her losing her spot in the England squad. However, a fruitful few months back in the capital saw Kelly rediscover her form as she played a key part in Arsenal's European triumph and she has now joined the club on a permanent deal, following the expiration of her contract in Manchester.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

That increased game time also paid dividends for Kelly on the international front, allowing her to regain her place in the Lionesses squad ahead of this summer's European Championships. For a while, it looked like a lack of minutes could well cost the 27-year-old her spot, just three years on from her title-winning goal in the final against Germany. But her form with Arsenal changed all of that for the better.

  • WHAT KELLY SAID

“Putting pen to paper on a permanent contract at Arsenal is a standout moment for me," Kelly said upon the announcement of her permanent return to the Gunners. “Learning from an incredible manager and continuing to build relationships with an excellent team is a journey I’m looking forward to continuing. I’m excited for more silverware at this special club and to bring more trophies back to north London to celebrate with our supporters. I’ve always said that Arsenal supporters are the best and to have them on my side, singing my name, means so much to me."

Head coach Renee Slegers added: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to make Chloe a permanent signing for us. She had a great impact for us and played an important role in what we achieved here last season, and I know she shares our ambition to compete for more.”

Kelly is Arsenal's first signing of the summer window. Hurtig, who will represent Sweden at the Euros this summer alongside Ilestedt, has since signed for Fiorentina.

SLC wants answers for Sri Lanka's "shocking defeats" in the World Cup

Sri Lanka Cricket has called for “an urgent and comprehensive explanation from the entire coaching staff and selectors” following the team’s 302-run defeat in their World Cup match against India in Mumbai.Sri Lanka lost five of their first seven games to South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, and have beaten only Netherlands and England. Their last two matches are against Bangladesh and New Zealand, and Sri Lanka need an improvement in performance if they are to finish in the top eight in the World Cup, to ensure qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy.”The recent overall performance and shocking defeats have raised significant questions about the team’s preparation, strategies and performance,” SLC said in a statement. “SLC management never interfered with the hired professional staff to carry out their duties and responsibilities as per the norms and regulations. However, SLC firmly believes in accountability, transparency and the importance of addressing subject concerns promptly.”The release lists four points which the coaching staff and selectors will be expected to address, namely:

  • “Strategy and preparation: Providing insights into the team’s strategy, preparation and tactical decisions during the matches.
  • Team selection: Justifying player selections for each match and explaining any changes made to the playing XI.
  • Player performance: Assessing individual and team performance, highlighting strengths and weaknesses, and addressing any injuries or fitness concerns.
  • Post-match analysis: Sharing post-match analyses conducted by the coaching team and explaining key takeaways.”

While their on-field performances have been disappointing, Sri Lanka have also struggled with injuries throughout their World Cup campaign, with their captain Dasun Shanaka, and fast bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Lahiru Kumara ruled out at various stages. They were forced to bring in Chamika Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera as replacements, while Kusal Mendis stepped in as captain. They had also lost key legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga to injury before the tournament began. There have, however, been some positives: left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka’s five-wicket haul against India took him to the top of the wicket charts in this World Cup, Sadeera Samarawickrama has emerged as Sri Lanka’s top-scorer, and Pathum Nissanka has improved as an opener.Sri Lanka’s next game is against Bangladesh in Delhi on November 6, and their final league game is against New Zealand in Bengaluru on November 9.
