Shehzad quits PSL in a huff, points to 'deliberate effort' to deny him a team

Ahmed Shehzad has retired from the PSL in a blaze of fury, blaming a “deliberate effort” by all six franchises to keep him out of the competition. In a detailed statement, in which he said – without elucidating – that he knew “exactly the reasons why I’m not made part of the PSL”, he said he was leaving to keep his self-respect intact. It does not signal a retirement from all cricket, with Shehzad claiming he had been offered money to participate in leagues around the world, offers which he should theoretically be able to take up now. His statement suggested disillusionment with Pakistan cricket, saying patriotism “goes against you”, and pointedly suggesting other players had taken up lucrative league contracts around the globe, while he opted to stay in the domestic circuit.”I have tried really hard in domestic cricket consistently in the last few years, and did reasonably well in the National T20 Cup just before the PSL draft,” he wrote in a post on social media. “There seems a deliberate effort to keep me out, even when franchises have opted for other performers with inferior numbers than me,” he said. “But when everything is pre-planned it doesn’t really matter. I don’t know whose responsibility it is to get top domestic performers in the PSL then.”Shehzad, 32, last played in the PSL in 2020, primarily representing Quetta Gladiators with whom he won the title in 2019, scoring a half-century in that final. He had a poor tournament in 2020, scoring 61 runs in seven innings, and did not play again. He scored 1077 runs in 45 PSL matches at a strike rate of 120.06, and was the first Pakistani to score a hundred in T20I cricket.Despite being out of Pakistan contention for a few years now, there has been something of a campaign this season – on social media if nowhere else – to have Shehzad selected for Pakistan again. Wahab Riaz, the chief selector, has been asked questions about a possible recall for Shehzad on a couple of occasions, as was incoming selector Asad Shafiq. Both have played down his chances though have not ruled out a return.Shehzad had a decent National T20 Cup, with 344 runs at 133.33, but could find no takers at the PSL draft on December 13. Pakistan’s next T20 assignment is a series with New Zealand, shortly after their red-ball tour of Australia.

Martin, who joined Barca's reserves side in 2023, got promoted to the senior team last season. Thanks to his performances in training, he received the opportunity to appear for Flick's side on 42 occasions across all competitions last season, amassing 1,793 minutes in total and starting 19 times. ECB seek decision on private investment in Hundred by spring 2024

IPL franchises, private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds among bodies consulted for tournament’s future

The ECB have consulted with owners of IPL franchises, private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds on the prospect of investment in the Hundred, and want counties to reach a decision on its future in the early months of the 2024 season. The Hundred’s existing model features eight clubs which field both men’s and women’s teams and are owned entirely by the ECB. These clubs have been run by boards comprising county representatives and independent directors in the tournament’s first three seasons. But the ECB and counties have discussed the model extensively since the end of the 2023 season and are in the second phase of a three-part consultation period, in the hope of reaching a decision in April 2024. This would allow them time to implement changes for the 2025 edition of the tournament. As things stand, the ECB’s preferred option is to open the tournament up to private investors, seeing the Hundred as an opportunity to bring money into the English game. The specifics of the model remain up for discussion, with one possibility involving the addition of two new teams – most likely based in the south-west and north-east.The most likely outcomes both involve the ECB handing 50% equity stakes in Hundred teams – which would become franchises – to their primary host counties. Surrey, for example, would be given a 50% stake in Oval Invincibles, while MCC, who own Lord’s, would be provided a 50% stake in London Spirit.Guy Lavender and Bruce Carnegie-Brown, MCC’s chief executive and chair, told members in a meeting on Monday evening that the ECB has been speaking to a wide range of potential sources of capital including IPL franchise owners, private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds. That raises the prospect of investment in the Hundred from the Middle East, potentially from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) or the various state-owned funds in the United Arab Emirates. MCC also encouraged members to consider which potential investors they would feel comfortable with the club being in partnership with.Lavender told ESPNcricinfo in a statement: “The purpose of the Members’ informal meeting was to socialise some of the issues with the membership regarding the future direction of The Hundred, including developing thinking and engaging them with the information available at this time.Related

Lancashire chairman resists notion of county rebrand for Hundred teams

“At present, nothing has been proposed or decided and it is premature to land on any particular conclusions until the ECB consultation and decision-making process involving the whole game has been completed, as well as our own consultation with Members.”Discussions at ECB level have also raised the prospect of an 18-team ‘open pyramid’ structure which would see the addition of a second division of the Hundred with promotion and relegation. This model would also involve clubs being opened up to private investment, though appears to have lost some of its initial support.Another option discussed by the ECB and counties was to open the Hundred itself up to private investment, rather than the teams, following reports a year ago of a £400 million bid for a 75% stake from a British private investment firm. However, this is not among the preferred options as things stand.Despite extensive speculation over its future since Richard Gould and Richard Thompson took over as chief executive and chair at the ECB, the Hundred will continue in some form for at least five more years and is underpinned by Sky Sports’ broadcast deal with the governing body. There is also widespread agreement across the English game that salaries in the Hundred will need to increase if it is to attract the world’s best players. The Hundred’s top male earners in 2023 were paid around 15% less than their equivalents in the Indian-backed Major League Cricket, despite the Hundred lasting nine days longer.Andy Anson, Lancashire’s chair, proposed a change from the 100-ball format to T20 last week, but such a shift appears unlikely at this stage. Gould said earlier this year: “The format is not something that is on my agenda… it’s given us that point of difference. Everyone around the world, in the cricketing world, has heard of the Hundred.”The Hundred’s model is relatively unusual on a global scale and is most similar to Australia’s Big Bash League, where teams are run by state boards. That stands in contrast to most other major T20 leagues, such as the IPL, where teams were set up as franchises owned by private investors or their companies. It is understood that any change to the Hundred’s model would require a three-quarters majority amongst the 18 first-class counties and MCC, and proposals remain at a relatively early stage.

Bangladesh and New Zealand meet for their first World Test Championship game of the new cycle

Sylhet promises batting-friendly conditions as both teams shift focus to the longest format

Mohammad Isam27-Nov-2023Big picture: New cycle brings new hopeThe first Test match after the World Cup in India is taking place in Sylhet, which geographically, is not a million miles away, but certainly in terms of atmosphere, it is another world. New Zealand are playing their first Test in eight months, Bangladesh in five months. It is the kick-off point for the World Test Championship for both teams, so at the very least, points are at stake.New Zealand were the defending champions in the last cycle, but they were nowhere near close to making the final. That might just have prompted them to be that little bit more switched on, resulting in bringing their best team on this tour after sending a second-string side for the ODIs that were played here in September. Everything was different then.Kane Williamson will lead the batting unit alongside Tom Latham, Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls in the top four. Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, having totalled five centuries between them in the World Cup, will be brimming with confidence.Related

Captain Tim Southee will lead a bowling attack that is likely to be spin-dominated. Ish Sodhi is in the mix – he took a six-for against Bangladesh this year, albeit in a different format. Mitchell Santner seems a good shout to play his first Test in over two years. Ajaz Patel is another major option for their selectors. Ravindra’s all-round skills will be key, while Neil Wagner too could expect to bowl a lot if he is the second seamer with Southee.Bangladesh have their own reasons to want to get on the field quickly. They had a poor World Cup campaign. The aftermath hasn’t been great either and they go into this series without many of their key players. Captain Shakib Al Hasan and his deputy Litton Das are out. So are fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain. Apart from Litton who was given paternity leave, the rest are all injured. Bangladesh have had to rethink their bowling attack even as Shakib and Tamim Iqbal have left big holes in the batting line-up.Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir Hasan are the likely openers, but a lot will depend on captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim. Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz will carry the inexperienced bowling attack. The picture ain’t pretty for Bangladesh, but Sylhet could provide the sort of exit they want from the talk about the World Cup, which doesn’t seem to end in Bangladesh.Form guideBangladesh WWLLL (last five Tests, most recent first)
New Zealand WWWLDIn the spotlight: Mominul Haque and Rachin RavindraUsually Mominul Haque doesn’t want to be in the spotlight. It was one of the reasons that he gave up the Test captaincy last year. His runs had dried up. Many felt it was because of his aversion to the limelight. Mominul, however, remains Bangladesh’s Test batting mainstay. He will be expected to get back in the groove quickly even though he has stressed in the recent past that it isn’t easy being a Test specialist playing this format after big gaps. Still, he was the highest run-getter in the recently-concluded National Cricket League first-class tournament so batting form may not be a big worry for the left-hander.Tim Southee will be leading a full-strength New Zealand side in Bangladesh•Getty ImagesThere will be a lot of interest in Rachin Ravindra after his World Cup bonanza. He finished as the fourth highest run-getter in the competition, including centuries against England, Australia and Pakistan. He is likely to have a different role in the Test series against Bangladesh, probably batting down the order and involved in a lot of bowling. He is already a changed cricketer, having been given the opportunity of a lifetime so early in his international career.Team news: Extra spinners in both XIsNurul Hasan will take Litton’s place behind the stumps, while Khaled Ahmed is likely to take Taskin’s spot in the bowling unit. Ravindra is likely to bat in the top six after a stellar World Cup campaign, but there could be a toss-up between Ajaz, Santner and Sodhi for two positions.New Zealand (probable): 1 Tom Latham, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Henry Nicholls, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Rachin Ravindra, 7 Tom Blundell (wk), 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee (capt), 10 Ajaz Patel/Ish Sodhi, 11 Neil WagnerPitch and conditions: Sylhet is good for battingSylhet’s reputation as the best batting ground in Bangladesh was strengthened by the five white-ball international matches held this year. It hasn’t hosted a Test in five years but during this period, there have been six 400-plus scores in first-class matches at this venue. The weather is mostly dry, with the breeze coming down from the hillside often helping drop the temperature further.Stats and trivia Sylhet is hosting only its second Test match. The first match was in 2018 when Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh. New Zealand are playing Tests in Bangladesh after exactly ten years. Bangladesh, meanwhile, have toured New Zealand in 2017, 2019 and 2022 to play six Tests in total. Shanto has become Bangladesh’s captain within five years of making his Test debut. That’s a quicker climb to leadership than Mushfiqur and Mominul, both of whom became captains six years after their respective Test debuts.Quotes”Dusting off the whites and back together as a Test group. We achieved some pretty cool things in the backend of last summer. It has been a heavy diet of white-ball cricket so the guys are excited to be back in Test cricket. Start of the World Test Championship cycle is exciting.”
“I personally believe I can lead the team in all formats. It is easier for anyone to plan as a long-term captain. Whoever comes through as the next captain, he will have a better time if he gets a longer rope.”

Antum Naqvi breaks Zimbabwe cricket records with unbeaten 300

Antum Naqvi, the 24-year-old Mid West Rhinos captain in just his second first-class season, made history when he became the first player from a Zimbabwean team to hit a triple century at any level of representative cricket. When play started on the third day of the Rhinos vs Matabeleland Tuskers Logan Cup game in Harare on Friday, Naqvi was already on 250, with Rhinos 461 for 3 in reply to Tuskers’ 128. Naqvi built on that, getting to 300 before lunch, and breaking several Zimbabwe records along the way. When he passed 265, he broke the Logan Cup first-class record for the highest individual score, which belonged to Cephas Zhuwao for his effort in the 2017-18 season. Ray Gripper’s 279 not out, the highest individual score by a Zimbabwean player in first-class cricket, back in the 1967-68 Currie Cup in South Africa, was the next to be eclipsed. And finally, when he got to 300, he had bettered Brian Davison’s 299 in 1973-74, the highest Logan Cup score before it became a first-class competition.Graeme Hick and Murray Goodwin had both recorded triple-centuries in first-class cricket, but those were in the county circuit in England and not for a Zimbabwean team. The best first-class score on Zimbabwe soil, though, belongs to Mark Richardson, who had scored 306 for the visiting New Zealanders against Zimbabwe A in the 2000-01 season in Kwekwe. Naqvi might have been able to top that, but Rhinos declared at 538 for 3 with him on 300 to press for a win. Armed with a lead of 410, Rhinos had Tuskers at 143 for 2 – still 267 behind – by close of play on the third day.Naqvi faced 295 balls for his triple century, having batted for 444 minutes and hit 30 fours and ten sixes.
