'He thought I was an idiot and why the hell had they signed me?' – Big time Real Madrid flop explains why he made 'embarrassing' decision to wear a fur coat to transfer unveiling

Antonio Cassano looked back on his disastrous Real Madrid stint, admitting to weight fines, regrets and turning up to his unveiling in a fur coat.

  • Admits fur coat was a shocking choice
  • Joined Real Madrid in 2006 after Roma rise
  • Known more for antics than football in Spain

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Italian forward Cassano has reflected on his ill-fated Real Madrid stint, revealing why he believes club legend and sporting director Emilio Butragueno thought he was an “idiot” after turning up to his unveiling in a fur coat. The outspoken Italian, who joined Los Blancos in 2006, admitted he made a “madman” decision during his arrival in Spain, which immediately shaped the perception of him inside the club. Cassano’s story came from a revealing interview where he opened up about the first impressions he left, and why, in hindsight, he agrees with them.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cassano’s time at Madrid remains one of the most chaotic chapters of his career. Despite his undoubted talent, he failed to make an impact in Spain due to poor discipline, lack of fitness and personal clashes. The anecdote about his fur coat perfectly captures the culture clash and lack of professionalism that derailed his stint at the Bernabeu. While the likes of Butragueno embodied the old-guard values of the club, Cassano’s flamboyance and unpredictability didn’t align, making his Madrid spell more memorable for off-field stories than footballing achievements.

  • AFP

    WHAT CASSANO SAID

Recalling the moment he first met Butragueno, the former Italy international painted a vivid picture of his eccentric debut: "Great, Butragueno. Polite, very shy, calm. Always reserved. I remember arriving [in Madrid after his signing] with a fur coat that, my goodness… I'm embarrassed. And he said: 'Please, tomorrow put on a suit'. I told him to relax, but then I thought that these people had signed me knowing that I'm crazy. And I went with that coat. They introduced me to Di Stefano, another legend. And I remember Emilio looking at me, petrified, and I think that in his head, Butragueno believed that I was an idiot, an imbecile, and why the hell had they signed me. And today I agree with him. Because only a madman like me could do something like that."

Cassano made just 29 appearances and scored four goals during a chaotic 18-month spell at Madrid. He was suspended for disrespecting coach Fabio Capello, claimed on air he’d walk back to Italy to rejoin Roma, suffered injuries and was eventually loaned to Sampdoria. His time in Spain was also marred by poor fitness, Cassano admitted to gaining 14kg and receiving weekly fines for being overweight. Despite his flop at Madrid, he revived his career in Italy, winning Serie A with AC Milan and playing a key role in the Azzurri's run to the Euro 2012 final.

Rabada leaves IPL early with soft tissue infection in lower limb

He is being monitored closely by the CSA medical team and is expected to be available for the T20 World Cup

Kagiso Rabada has returned home from the IPL on Sunday evening with an infection in the soft tissue of a lower limb, but is expected to be available for the entire T20 World Cup.Rabada played 11 matches for the Punjab Kings and took 11 wickets at an economy of 8.85 but will not feature in their last two matches. With PBKS ruled out of the playoffs, Rabada was allowed to travel back to South Africa, where he consulted a specialist. A CSA statement said he was being “closely monitored by the medical team” in the lead-up to the World Cup.Rabada’s inclusion is particularly important to South Africa because he is the only black African player named in the 15-man provisional squad, which has become a source of some controversy. CSA currently has targets for the national team that require them to field, on average over the course of a season, six players of colour in every XI, of which at least two must be black African. South Africa will miss that at the T20 World Cup, where they have six players of colour in the squad but only one black African. So Rabada will have to play every game to ensure they do not fall too far behind the overall target. South Africa will have the opportunity to increase the average over the 2024-25 season.Lungi Ngidi is the only other black African player who was in realistic contention for the squad and has been included as a travelling reserve. South Africa’s other fast bowlers are Anrich Nortje, who has returned after a nine-month break caused by a stress fracture, Gerald Coetzee, Ottniel Baartman and Marco Jansen.

'It's do or die for this player' – Herculez Gomez questions Tim Weah's move to Marseille, says USMNT spot is in jeopardy

Alexi Lalas adds that move to Olympique Marseille under Roberto De Zerbi will be pivotal career moment for the U.S. international

Gomez questions player-coach dynamicNotes the manager's disciplinarian approachLalas says Weah could play in 2026 World CupAFPWHAT HAPPENED

Analyzing Timothy Weah's transfer to Marseille, former USMNT star Herculez Gomez questioned whether the U.S. international can thrive under coach Roberto De Zerbi's management style.

“I'll tell you where he won't be comfortable and that's with Roberto de Zerbi,” Gomez said on the Futbol Americas podcast. “Now, this is a very stern, very firm coach… He's going to be a firm hand, but I actually think that serves Timothy Weah some good right now. This is Timothy Weah, who goes to Juventus and was a wing back – and all through those moments you would see ‘Wow, pretty good assist. Wow, very good play. Wow, pretty good goal’.

"So, he doesn't have a lot of mileage in those legs. In the last couple years, since Qatar, at the club level, Timothy Weah has been non-existent… Do what it takes day in day out, and training field to earn your spot. Every single weekend, be an impact player with Marseille. This is going to be one of the defining moments in Timothy Weah’s career. He's in a place that, because of his father, the limelight will be on him. He's in a place right now because of the World Cup where it's do or die for this player – and he still has much to prove to Mauricio Pochettino."

Gomez said the move could be career-defining, especially since the USMNT has a new manager with new expectations.

“We can no longer keep that same stance or that same bar with these players, because Mauricio Pochettino has proven, he doesn't care," he said of past performances. "He's proven that he'll go with MLS player, go with the player who proves it to him in that training session. So, if I'm Timothy Weah, this has to work out because there are a lot of players right now. If the biggest player in USMNT pool, in their orbit, Christian Pulisic, is in doubt… what do players, like, Timothy Weah, have to look forward if they're not on? What do they have to look forward if they're not playing well?”

AdvertisementGettyWHAT ALEXI LALAS SAID

Former USMNT star Alexi Lalas also offered his assessment of the move to Marseille, and remained optimistic that Weah's place in the starting lineup still holds.

“So yes, he's versatile,” Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “I still will argue that he, over the last cycle, was the most consistent and most dangerous and uniquely dangerous player from an attacking perspective over there on that right hand side. And that's kind of where I want to see him now. The fact that we still haven't found somebody up top, who knows, maybe Pochettino gets creative?

"But ultimately, if Tim Weah is playing on that right hand side and doing good things, I think it's going to be hard for a Diego Luna or anybody else to come in and take that spot."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Weah has signed for Marseille on loan from Juventus, with the move set to be made permanent at the end of the 2025-26 season. The American spent two years at Juventus, making 78 appearances for the Old Lady, contributing to 14 goals.
