A escolha de VP em não renovar com o Timão para assinar com o Flamengo deixou a torcida corintiana revoltada, já que a Fiel apoiava e fazia campanha pela permanência de Vítor. No entanto, a saída do lusitano deixou o elenco alvinegro aliviado.

Greenwood had been expected to pledge his international future to Jamaica after being granted citizenship and a new passport. McClaren had even been hoping to have the Marseille forward in his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago over the current international break but has not been able to call up the 23-year-old.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

McClaren has now lifted the lid on the situation and revealed the conversations he has had with Greenwood. The Marseille forward, who scored 21 goals last season in Ligue 1, has still not committed his international future to Jamaica and has told the coach that he wants to focus on his club football for the time being.

  • WHAT MCCLAREN SAID

McClaren told a press conference: "We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp but on a conversation with his family, he's not going to commit at this time to anybody. So he's taking his time over that. It's a little bit disappointing, we probably have to be more patient.

"We will keep the contact. We will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica, he respects Jamaica. He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to an international team at the moment.

"We have to respect that, however much we've worked to get him here for these camps. So, who knows in the future."

Virou rotina?

Chelsea re-sign Ishe Samuels-Smith just five weeks after selling academy star to sister club Strasbourg

Chelsea have brought back academy product Ishe Samuels-Smith from sister club Strasbourg only 33 days after selling him to the French side, with the defender immediately loaned out to Swansea City.

Samuels-Smith left Stamford Bridge at the end of July, joining Strasbourg in a permanent deal under the shared BlueCo ownership structure. However, just over a month later, the teenager has returned to Chelsea and was officially loaned out to Swansea City on September 2. The left-back was on the bench for one Ligue 1 match during his short stint in France but did not make a senior appearance. Swansea announced his arrival on loan shortly after the transfer deadline.

The 19-year-old’s sudden return is understood to have been influenced by Strasbourg defender Ismael Doukoure signing a new long-term deal, which reduced the French side’s need for cover in Samuels-Smith’s position. Chelsea view a Championship loan as a better development pathway, following the model that saw current captain Reece James excel at Wigan in 2018-19. Samuels-Smith originally joined Chelsea from Everton in 2023 for £4m and signed a contract until 2031 earlier this year. He had captained the club’s Under-21s but is still awaiting his senior debut.

WHAT STRASBOURG SAID

The French side released a statement after the exit of the youngster, which read: "Racing announces the departure of Ishe Samuels-Smith, who returns to Chelsea. The entire Racing team thanks Ishe for his commitment during his time at the club and wishes him every success for the rest of his career."

'It was a technical decision' – Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti explains Neymar’s omission from World Cup qualifiers

The forward recently said he wasn’t injured, leaving Ancelotti’s decision as the only explanation

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar’s omission from his latest squad was a deliberate technical decision, not a matter of fitness.

“It was a technical decision based on many factors,” the Italian manager explained ahead of Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Chile.

The call means Neymar’s wait for another cap continues – his last appearance for came back on Oct. 18, 2023. Despite enjoying one of his best stretches of form in years, the forward was left out once again, a choice that Neymar himself suggested was not due to injury.

Although Ancelotti mentioned it was a technical decision, the coach emphasized that physical condition was central to his evaluation of all players in the national team pool.

“Nobody can question Neymar’s technical ability. What we assess every day, and for every match, is physical fitness. That applies not just to him, but to everyone,” Ancelotti said.

While he didn’t go into specific names, the veteran manager admitted he already has a clear picture of the squad he wants for the 2026 World Cup. Out of nearly 70 players under consideration, those who secure a spot will be the ones in top condition and capable of fitting seamlessly into the collective system.

“We’ll look at quality, yes, but also at being 100 percent fit and being able to play for the team rather than individually,” he said.

Since returning to Santos earlier this year, Neymar has featured in 20 matches, scoring six goals and providing three assists.

Australia use nine bowlers and take T20 series with thumping win

Australia wrapped up a T20 series victory over Pakistan on the back of a clinical bowling effort and clean strikes from Beth Mooney. The hosts used nine bowlers on Thursday night at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena, restricting Pakistan to 96 for 7 and chasing down the target in 12.4 overs with eight wickets in hand.Mooney returned to the top of the order after not batting in the first game of the series because of soreness, and hit 46 from 29 balls. She shared a 60-run opening partnership with skipper Meg Lanning to iron out most of the total. The win clinches the three-game series for Australia, following their eight-wicket win in game one, with the final match to be played in Canberra on Sunday.Lanning shared the ball around in Australia’s final series ahead of the T20 World Cup in South Africa beginning in February.Spinner Alana King came on in the middle to late stages with great effect, picking up 2 for 10 from two overs. King dropped Ayesha Naseem in the 13th over, but made up for it in the 14th when she trapped her plumb lbw for 5.Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Jessica Jonassen, Grace Harris and Annabel Sutherland all chipped in with a wicket each.Star allrounder Gardner, who earlier this week expressed her discomfort with playing on Australia Day, was one of just two players to bowl four overs.Gardner, a proud Muruwari woman, said January 26 was a day of hurt and mourning for Indigenous people. Australia’s squad attended a smoking ceremony and completed a walking tour of kunanyi/Mt Wellington in Hobart, and wore an Indigenous jersey, socks and wristbands for the match.Megan Schutt, who took 5 for 15 in the first game, conceded 10 runs from her one over.Pakistan opener Muneeba Ali top-scored with 33 from 43 balls, but was one of only three in her side to reach double figures. There was an awkward moment not long before the first ball, with the on-field sprinklers briefly coming to life.

Murphy relishes 'awesome' battle with Kohli and 'surreal' start to Test cricket

While his future opportunities after this tour remain uncertain, he hopes to use early success to get better

Surreal. Daunting. As good as it gets. Those are just three ways Todd Murphy described his first experience of Test cricket amid the series in India, where he has been lauded for his maturity and ability to slot into the side despite limited experience.Murphy had played seven first-class matches when he was called in to debut at Nagpur where he claimed seven wickets. All told he has taken 11 wickets at 21.81 with a miserly economy of 2.61, the latter particularly coming to the fore in the second innings in Indore when his wicketless 14 overs went for just 18 runs. He was praised by Daniel Vettori for playing a role in ensuring another India collapse.Related

Murphy and Kuhnemann keep pace with fast-forward Test cricket

Among that he has claimed Virat Kohli three times; the first owed a bit to luck when Kohli was caught down the leg side but the other two, especially the dismissal in Indore, came about through terrific skill.”It’s been awesome,” Murphy said of that battle. “When I look back to Nagpur when he walked out to bat, I was at the top of my mark thinking this is as good as it gets getting to bowl to a guy like that. So to be able to have that for the first three Tests has been awesome, a really enjoyable battle and no different to bowling to a lot of their guys. When they stand there it is daunting at times.”Murphy was modest about the set-up to Kohli in Indore. “It’s always nice when it looks like that,” he said. “And I think the plans for [coming from] around the wicket is always to challenge both sides of the edges, for that to work out the way it did was nice and to get him out again was awesome.””At the start of the season we both weren’t in the state sides and to be here now playing Test cricket together is pretty surreal”•Getty Images

Murphy has been part of a rare Australian spin trio in the last two Tests with Matthew Kuhnemann, with only a little more experience under his belt, also hastily drafted into the side for Delhi, then claiming his own maiden five-wicket haul in Indore to bundle out India for 109.”It’s something I’ve never really experienced, playing with two other frontline spinners,” Murphy said. “Steve [Smith] talked about it before the last Test, it’s about putting your ego away and knowing you’re going to bowl short spells at times. It doesn’t mean you’re not bowling well, it’s probably just accepting that and knowing that at certain times you’re going to be playing different roles. It’s been enjoyable and we’ve been able to work off each other very well and we’re quite different.”While Murphy’s relationship with Nathan Lyon was strong before the tour – the latter being a mentor during his young career – a strong bond has been formed with Kuhnemann after their similarly rapid elevation to the Test arena.”It’s been really cool,” he said. “We spoke about it after Kuhny debuted. At the start of the season we both weren’t in the state sides and to be here now playing Test cricket together is pretty surreal. It’s happened a lot faster than we both probably expected. We’ve just tried to enjoy it and the relationship is building nicely. We can talk about spin bowling, what works and what doesn’t.”Quite when Murphy’s next Test opportunity comes after Ahmedabad, providing Lyon remains fit, is uncertain. It is unlikely that conditions in England for the World Test Championship final and the Ashes will call for two spinners and it remains a rare route on home soil, although Ashton Agar did partner Lyon against South Africa at the SCG this season. Australia’s next subcontinent tour is not until early 2025 when they visit Sri Lanka for two Tests.Murphy is set for a spell in county cricket ahead of the Ashes and should be well-placed to be the second spinner in that squad.”I haven’t thought too far ahead but when you look, Gaz [Lyon] is still bowling as good as he ever has so when this series does come to an end it is going to slow down a little, it’s quite rare other places in the world to play two spinners,” he said. “To have this taste so early, it will drive me to get better and what it even more when hopefully it next does come.”

'We've got to start building' – Emma Hayes welcomes Naomi Girma, chances for Gisele Thompson and Phallon Tullis-Joyce and key takeaways from USWNT roster reveal

The USWNT boss continues to turn over the player pool, and this squad features intriguing choices

While discussing her latest roster selections, Emma Hayes was asked to reflect on it all. It has been almost exactly a year since she arrived as U.S. women's national team coach. With an Olympic gold in her back pocket and now with the experience of starting a fresh cycle, this was a time to take stock.

"The truth is I'm in love with my job every day," she said, then detailed the best aspects of the role – the challenges, the leadership lessons, the culture. And ahead of upcoming friendlies against China and Jamaica, Hayes' favorite part? The opportunities.

This camp will represent exactly that for many: an opportunity. Hayes named a 24-player squad for these two matches, which will be held on May 31 and June 3. The roster features a key return, two first-time call-ups, a further uncapped player and a whole lot of young faces, all of whom are looking to take their own leap toward the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The USWNT split a pair of friendlies with Brazil in April, winning the first match 2-0 before falling 2-1 in the second. Facing Brazil wasn't going to be easy, and that proved to be the case. The games marked a rematch of the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal match, so there was a lot on the line despite it being labeled a "friendly." Yet given that the 2027 World Cup is still two years away, Hayes made it very clear that once again she would be experimenting with players – because she can.

The USWNT isn't a finished product, and it isn't meant to be at this point in the cycle. For Hayes, the player pool continues to expand, and this camp will give her a chance to learn multiple lessons about those in it.

GOAL takes a look at the five big takeaways from Hayes' squad selection.

Getty ImagesGirma's return

For fans of the USWNT, one name stood out immediately in this roster. She's back!

Naomi Girma is making her USWNT return, having missed all previous matches since the start of the year. Injury issues plagued her initial days at Chelsea, but she returned in time to win trophies and, more importantly for the USWNT, be ready for this camp.

The USWNT has missed Girma dearly. There are few, if any, center-backs that can go toe-to-toe with her these days, and having her back gives the U.S. arguably the world's best safety net. It also gives the backline a vital boost in leadership from a player who has become one of the faces of this national team.

"You cannot underestimate the importance of players like Naomi Girma to this team," Hayes said in a news conference Tuesday. "We've been without a lot of experienced players over the last six, seven or eight months, so getting some of that back in this camp with Naomi, we'll add not just quality, but that leadership piece. She's the vice captain of the team. She's someone who is growing into that role.

"I know she's missed it terribly and, when you make as big of a move as she did, it does take a little bit of time to settle in. It's taken her body some time to adjust, but she's in a great place. She's very, very excited to be back with us."

AdvertisementAFPThompson as Rodman replacement?

Trinity Rodman isn't here, along with here Triple Espresso mates, Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson. That pesky back injury has flared again, and the USWNT will be very cautious with her treatment and return.

"It's a multi-disciplinary approach to supporting Trin," Hayes said. "That's club, country and the NWSL, so there's good communication and support provided to her. With regard to the issue in her back, she wants to get to a place where it doesn't keep coming back, so I think these are the right steps for her.

"I've definitely seen a lot of progress this week but, unfortunately, I can't put a time frame on it because we want to ensure, again, that she's not carrying that pain any further. I think we're definitely heading in the right direction. I don't know when she will be back, but I know that Trinity is being given all of the support."

Rodman's absence creates an opportunity. Hayes tipped a surprising player as a potential answer, though: Gisele Thompson. Typically a right-back, Alyssa Thompson's younger sister has been recognized as a forward by U.S. Soccer, and Hayes says that isn't by accident.

"No Trinity Rodman available and no Yasmeen Ryan available, and Gisele is an attacking fullback, there's no question," Hayes said. "She's been playing as a right-back for her club, but I'd like to see her as a wide forward. One, because it's natural for her to go forward and, two, because I think there are other players ahead of her in the fullback position, specifically Emily Fox. It feels like a win-win with a lack of wide options in this camp."

Getty ImagesShaw, Albert and Fishel U23 bound

There were some notable absences from this squad. Jaedyn Shaw was left out, as was Korbin Albert. Mia Fishel has recently recovered from her long-term injury and, given the lack of strikers, could be a valuable player for the USWNT. None were on the roster, but all will be active within the program.

Hayes confirmed that all three will be part of the U.S. U23 roster, which will be released on Wednesday.

"I think that's the beautiful thing about the U23s, going to Germany and playing high-level opponents," she said. "This is what I felt has been really missing for a lot of players. They make that jump from Under-20 to seniors and they don't have a body of games. Yes, they could come sit on the bench for us, but it's much better to go and play in Germany and get those experiences so that these players are tracking to compete in the place we want them to come 2027."

Getty ImagesA feel-good callup

With those familiar players switching to the U23s for this camp, there was room to expand the pool and call in some newer faces. The standout newcomer is, of course, Lo’eau LaBonta, who could make some history if she does feature.

At 32, Labonta would become the oldest player to earn her first USWNT cap. An 11-year NWSL veteran, Labonta hasn't worn a national team shirt since her time with the U23s while she was at Stanford. This is a feel-good moment for her, one that is the culmination of years of hard work on the club level.

Hayes was quick to point out, though, that this isn't just about creating a special moment.

"She's deserving of the call-up," Hayes said. "She's been consistent in everything that she has done and I think, with the volume of young players – or less-experienced players – we're bringing in, I think we have to get that balance right.

"Obviously, with the U23s program and two fantastic games in Germany, it's an opportunity for us to use that for less developed players who are strong candidates for the 2027 pool. You look at someone like Lo’eau, who is a super player and someone, like I said, is deserving of that. This is the right moment to do it."
