Aston Villa fans react to James Bree’s loan switch to Ipswich

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa defender James Bree has completed a loan move to Ipswich until the end of the season having made just 21 starts since signing for the Midlands outfit in January 2017, according to BBC Sport.

The versatile defender is below Alan Hutton and Ahmed Elmohamady in the pecking order at Villa Park and will surely relish the opportunity to get some minutes under his belt – he will have his work cut out for him, though, as the Tractor Boys are rock bottom of the Championship, having taken just 18 points from 29 games.

Villa, meanwhile, are looking to push for a play-off spot and will surely be hoping that the deadline day loan signing of Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth will give them some much-needed security in defence; Dean Smith’s side have let in 46 goals this campaign, only relegation battlers Rotherham and Ipswich have conceded more.

The decision to let Bree go, then, is a brave one considering the lack of depth in the backline – the 21-year-old can play at the heart of defence, too – and the frequency at which the quality of the current right-back options is called into question.

The Villa Park faithful certainly seem to think that allowing the former Barnsley man to leave was a mistake, as they reacted on Twitter…

The Chalkboard: Pochettino should stun Arsenal by benching Kane

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham welcome Arsenal to Wembley on Saturday in a match that could now have huge top four implications, and Mauricio Pochettino should do the unthinkable and drop Harry Kane.

Kane has escaped punishment for a possible head-butt in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, per Sky Sports, but should the striker miss out on Saturday anyway?

It seems utterly ridiculous to even entertain the notion that Kane, who has scored six goals in his seven appearances against Arsenal, would not start the derby, but the talisman does not look fully fit.

The 25 year-old has just returned well ahead of schedule from an ankle injury, something he has struggled with in the past, and playing three intense games in seven days may just be a step too far.

Off the pace

For a player returning from a serious ankle injury, a trip to face an extremely physical Burnley side followed by two London derbies is about as brutal as it gets, and Kane is clearly feeling the effects.

The England captain looked heavy-footed and out of sorts in the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea, and he didn’t exactly have a top performance at Turf Moor despite finding the back of the net.

Whoscored rate his performance at Stamford Bridge at 6.05, the joint-lowest score he has recorded this season along with the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

A boost for Son?

Shocking the world by benching Kane could also fire Son Heung-min back into form, who has struggled since the main man returned to the team.

Son had scored in four consecutive games in Kane’s absence, but has failed to score or assist in either of his showings since the striker’s return, and his scintillating showings have turned into drab displays with virtually no effect on the game.

The South Korean speedster clearly thrives in the spaces around a more traditional target man like Fernando Llorente, and he also showed in the Carabao Cup contest earlier this season that his pace can rip Arsenal to shreds if he is deployed up front.

The Gunners are very thin in defence due to an injury crisis, and stunning them with the pace of Son and/or the physicality of Llorente could restore Tottenham’s fortunes.

And hey, if it all goes horribly wrong, Kane isn’t exactly a bad super-sub to have in the back pocket.

Sheffield Wednesday fans heap praise on Michael Hector after latest Twitter post

[ad_pod ]Steve Bruce made his Hillsborough bow on Saturday afternoon but he was unable to make it two wins from two as Sheffield Wednesday drew 0-0 with Reading.A home clash against the Royals offered Bruce a decent opportunity to build upon the victory over Ipswich last weekend, and the new manager has reason to feel disappointed after Adam Reach spurned a glorious opportunity to get the three points in the dying embers of the game. There were positives for the manager to take from the fixture, though, as another sturdy defensive performance provided the foundations for the result, with Michael Hector continuing to impress at the heart of the defensive unit.

The 26-year-old has established himself as a popular figure in Sheffield this season, and another exemplary performance on Saturday only enhanced his reputation.

Hector posted a message to the supporters on his Twitter account on Sunday afternoon, revealing that he felt his side deserved the victory before turning attention towards the Tuesday night clash with Millwall.

In response to the post, the Wednesday fans turned out in their numbers to heap praise on the firm fan-favourite for his performance and also called for his temporary deal to be made permanent in the summer.

Here’s what the Sheffield Wednesday fans had to say in response to Hector’s Twitter post:

Houssem Aouar may help take Liverpool’s midfield to a completely new level in the summer

Liverpool could be set for another summer transfer window of lavish spending due to their financial success off the field.

The Reds recently posted record-breaking profits highlighting the immense work going on behind the scenes at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s run to the Champions League final last year significantly added to their finances as well as Philippe Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona. After choosing not to spend in January, perhaps Klopp could be handed another transfer war chest in the summer.

The evolution in the Liverpool squad is plain to see – they now boast one of the strongest squads in the Premier League. However, there have been times throughout the season where they have lacked some magic in the midfield. After failing to sign Nabil Fekir in the summer, the Reds could dip back into the market for a playmaker when the summer transfer window opens.

One man Liverpool should be attempting to sign is Lyon maestro Houssem Aouar. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the youngster is the latest star to progress through the club’s youth academy into the first-team. Aouar is now one of the first names on the team-sheet and has been ever-present for the French side this season making 34 appearances in all competitions.

It’s interesting to note that, back in 2016, the club were interested – yet he decided against the move. Clearly, then, the Reds are aware of this talent.

The 20-year-old has been lethal in front of goal, netting six as well as registering five assists for his team-mates in all competitions. Blessed with wonderful technical ability, Aouar oozes class when on the ball and constantly carves open defences; the Frenchman has averaged 1.3 key passes and 2.3 successful dribbles per game this season (as per WhoScored).

Liverpool’s midfield, at present, plays host to a lot of quality. They’ve got great energy between Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita, great defensive work with Fabinho and James Milner, and great creativity with Gini Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. That’s already better than most of the other teams in England, but it lacks something, in contrast, to say, Man City – who can call upon players like Bernardo Silva and David Silva.

Simply put, Liverpool’s midfield does lack a spark on occasion, and Aouar could provide it.

Paired with Liverpool’s famed front three, he could take his game to the next level. Klopp has a reputation for developing youngsters – Aouar could be the next star to thrive under his leadership.

Tactical Analysis: Spurs rearguard action proves decisive in Champions League decider

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur have had a fair few ‘coming-of-age’ performances under Mauricio Pochettino.

The first major Champions League scalp came from Real Madrid, a scintillating 3-1 win at Wembley, while the away comeback against Juventus, a 2-2 draw, was heralded in many quarters as proof of their growth.

This season, a 1-1 draw in the Camp Nou, against Barcelona, sealed their progress to the Round of 16.

Subsequently matched up against Borussia Dortmund, the best team in Germany, many expected a feast for the neutrals but perhaps a valiant defeat for Pochettino’s men. In fact, they have cruised into the last eight.

A 3-0 win at Wembley was, quite obviously, superb, Spurs flaying Dortmund at will in the second half, inspired by a rampant Jan Vertonghen and deadly Son Heung-min.

But Tuesday’s performance in Germany within a cauldron of yellow noise was perhaps even more impressive. Spurs knew what to expect: Lucien Favre’s men were going to attack from the off as they chased a miracle. Boosted by the return of Marco Reus, Dortmund set up to blitz Spurs from the off.

In the first half, as the scoreboard flashed in the corner of the ground, it showed that Dortmund had attempted nine shots on goal. Spurs had tried one.

Pochettino leaned heavily on the brilliance of his goalkeeper. Hugo Lloris has endured an up-and-down season but in the past week he has appeared a man transformed, finally showing the form that saw him lift the World Cup trophy with France in the summer.

Fresh from saving Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s injury-time penalty against Arsenal at Wembley, Lloris made a total of seven saves in Germany, per WhoScored. They included superb stops from both Julian Weigl and Mario Gotze and it was apparent from the off that Spurs needed their stopper at his best. He delivered.

So too did the manager. Pochettino recognised early that Reus was giving Toby Alderweireld the slip when Dortmund were in possession. Dropping into pockets of space, he had time to attempt to dictate the tempo. He wriggled free early on and, after a Davinson Sanchez error, appeared set to open the scoring, only for a miraculous Vertonghen challenge to deny him.

The Spurs boss counteracted his influence by shifting systems and dropping Moussa Sissoko into a deeper role, a tweak from the free-roaming role he was tasked with playing at the start of the game. Thereafter, Reus drifted out of the game and with it the siege on Lloris’ goal. Pochettino’s excellent tactical decision was a major factor behind the Frenchman’s clean-sheet.

As Spurs grew in confidence and Reus was nullified, they began to stroke the ball around at the end of the first-half and scored minutes into the second, Sissoko rampaging forward to play a through ball into Harry Kane, who, as he does, curled the ball past Roman Burki.

Spurs then challenged Dortmund to break them down and it was a challenge that Favre’s men roundly failed.

They are a team that regularly rely on the lightning speed of their counter-attacks, led by the superstar-in-waiting Sancho. But, when given possession, they had no answer and Spurs, amazingly, did not appear to be in any danger.

For many Tottenham fans that may be a hard sentence to comprehend but this was almost the perfect Champions League away performance.

Previously, Spurs have just been happy to be at the party, gleefully accepting the invite and hoping some surprises come their way throughout the night. All too often there have been some nasty shocks. This time around, it appears as though they have grown; they are finally sat at the top table, and it may last a little while longer yet.

The Chalkboard: Crystal Palace must play 4-4-2 against West Ham

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace host West Ham this weekend and will be hoping to build on their 2-0 win over Fulham last time out, where Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew played up front while Wilfried Zaha’s suspension ensured he could play no part in the victory. Both hitmen played well and Roy Hodgson must continue with two up front next time out but not for the reason you think.

On the chalkboard

Zaha’s sarcastic clapping of referee Andre Marriner in the Eagles’ clash with Southampton earned him a second yellow in quick succession of the first and so his side were forced to do battle with the Cottagers without him.

Thanks to a textbook Luka Milivojevic penalty and a Jeffrey Schlupp tap-in though, Hodgson’s side emerged victorious in their second game this season without the influential winger, while Benteke almost scored a wonder-goal to break his season-long drought.

Hodgson has chopped and changed between an orthodox 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3 this season depending on his personal but, looking at West Ham’s biggest threats, it is essential that he opts for the former and deploys Andros Townsend on the right flank.

Negating Felipe Anderson

Felipe Anderson has been a standout performer for the Hammers since signing from Lazio in the summer and poses a huge threat when allowed to cut inside from the left onto his favoured right foot. While Aaron Wan-Bissaka has all the tools to deal with Anderson, Hodgson should take no chances by instructing the tireless Townsend to track back and help out his compatriot.

The Palace number 10’s wonder-strikes from distance have deservedly earned him headlines this season but he is an engine in the ranks, too. His dogged defensive work in the win over Manchester City was crucial – as was his thunderous volley – and will be once again if Palace are to negate the dangerous West Ham winger.

Which player with “no potential” has just been named Crystal Palace’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video below…

The Chalkboard: Gerrard should start Lafferty and Defoe vs St Johnstone, if fit

[ad_pod ]

Steven Gerrard’s experiment with playing two up top failed miserably in the 2-1 defeat away at Kilmarnock last month, but he should take advantage of an ideal opportunity to retry it when Rangers host St Johnstone on Saturday, as long as the right personnel are fit.

On the chalkboard

Well, it was no surprise when the Liverpool legend tested out a 4-4-2 diamond formation following the January arrival of Jermain Defoe on loan, as it was clearly difficult to leave either he or the first-choice Alfredo Morelos on the substitutes’ bench in his preferred 4-3-3 system.

However, it was something of a failed test as the Glasgow giants were beaten, and while defensive errors hardly helped on that occasion, Gerrard hasn’t used it again from the start in the Scottish Premiership.

It could be said that Morelos and Defoe aren’t ideally suited to playing as a partnership and a little-and-large combination of the latter and Kyle Lafferty could be more effective, which could be an option this weekend given the Colombian is suspended.

Could Gerrard go for it?

It depends on a few factors.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

Firstly, the 38-year-old reported on Friday, via The Herald Scotland, that Defoe and Lafferty are actually struggling with injuries ahead of the top-flight clash, and obviously if one or both of them are absent then the aforementioned tactic wouldn’t be possible.

If they are available though, Gerrard should take a risk and go with it.

Unlike against Kilmarnock they are in front of their own supporters against a side that could be low on confidence following their 5-0 thrashing by Celtic in the Scottish Cup last weekend.

With the right players in wide areas there is no doubt that the Ranger duo can prove to be a thorn in the side of their opponents on Saturday, and it looks to be the ideal opportunity to go with it in Morelos’ absence.

Arsenal: The biggest tests are still to come

Arsenal currently find themselves in a very strong and confident position having beaten Manchester United on Sunday to move into fourth spot in the Premier League.

The Gunners are only one point off third place Tottenham Hotspur and have completed both legs against all of their rival teams.

Tricky away trips to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton should be the only worry for Arsenal where they could possibly drop points, but other than that they are well and truly on course to compete in the Champions League again next season.

But, given Arsenal’s recent history and failure to capitalise on these type of opportunities, Unai Emery, will have to be careful that his team doesn’t choke on the pressure and throw that chance away.

The Gunners will have to continue their hard work and show great determination to turn a new page for the club’s goals and ambitions.

Excellent victories over Chelsea and Manchester United won’t matter in the end if they somehow fail to pick up all the points they should in their remaining matches.

Emery will be hoping his defensive unit can continue to show the big strides they’ve made in recent matches and not concede necessary goals like they did earlier this season.

The manager will also hope key players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey can stay fit and injury free, while also competing in the Europa League.

And that objective has already started with the North London club having to turn a 3-1 defeat at Rennes around when the second leg takes place this coming Thursday at the Emirates.

Should Arsenal fail to do that then the fans will feel they don’t really have any excuse not finish in the top four of the Premier League given the easy run-in they have before the season concludes.
