Liverpool’s new glovesman: Adrian’s best moments from his time in England

[long_read]

[ad_pod ]

So, it’s official.

Liverpool have completed their fourth signing of the summer, although this one looks as if he will have the biggest impact on first-team proceedings as he plays deputy to Alisson as Jurgen Klopp’s No.2 – he even made his debut against Norwich City on Friday when the Brazilian went off injured.

[ad_pod ]

Former West Ham keeper Adrian has signed on a free transfer after leaving the Hammers at the end of last season following Simon Mignolet’s departure for Club Brugge, meaning that the Reds have almost immediately found a new backup for their undisputed No.1.

Let’s take a look at some of the Spaniard’s best moments since arriving in England with the Irons…

[snack_break title=”Stunning display against Manchester City”]

The Hammers very nearly stopped Manchester City from recording a 13th consecutive league win back in December 2017, although the Citizens went on to do just that and equal the record.

However, Adrian stepped in for Joe Hart – who was ineligible to face his parent club at the time – to make his furst Premier League appearance of the season and delivered a standout performance.

If anything, this shows that he has a good mentality can be relied on when called upon, something that he will need if he is to successfully deputise for Alisson.

[snack_break title=”Catching Cheikhou Kouyate’s head instead of the ball”]

This is more of a funny moment instead of being one of the 32-year-old’s ‘best’ as such, but it can’t be ignored.

Back in a game against London rivals Tottenham, the glovesman caught the head of teammate Cheikhou Kouyate instead of the ball, which made for some excellent visual content.

[snack_break title=”Knocking Everton out of the FA Cup”]

A lot of Liverpool fans will presumably like this one. The Anfield new boy knocked the Reds’ Merseyside rivals Everton out of the FA Cup back in the 2014/15 season with the winning penalty in the shootout.

What made the moment look even cooler was the fact that Adrian whipped his gloves off mid stride, as if to say: “This is about to be over, I won’t be needing these anymore.”

Impressive stuff, to say the least.

[snack_break title=”Running the entire pitch to celebrate Andy Carroll’s late winner vs West Brom”]

A player who Liverpool will know well is involved in this one, whilst memories of another are evoked.

Andy Carroll, the man who the Merseysiders signed for £35m back in 2011, netted a 94th-minute winner against West Brom back in January 2018, which led to Adrian sprinting the length of the pitch to get involved in the celebrations.

Remember when Pepe Reina did the same against Manchester United, Reds fans?

Liverpool fans react to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Super Cup appearance

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans on Twitter have been having their say on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain following his performance against Chelsea in the Super Cup on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old was given a start on the left wing by Jurgen Klopp despite the large majority of his appearances in 2017/18 coming in a central or right midfield role, and it’s fair to say it didn’t work out.

The former Southampton man appears to be still recovering his match fitness following the cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of action for the majority of last season, and he was largely anonymous out wide and unable to use his pace in the opening 45 minutes against the Blues.

The England international was sacrificed at half-time and replaced by Roberto Firmino, with Klopp suggesting post-match that he made a mistake selecting Oxlade-Chamberlain where he did.

Liverpool supporters were quick to issue their verdict on the 26-year-old’s display via the popular social media platform, with one saying “Ox looks months away from being ready to start games”, and another simply saying “Ox 0/10”.

Klopp may just need to think again before he considers playing the midfielder out wide in the future, then.

Liverpool fans want Pepe Reina back amid Alisson injury

[ad_pod ]

Some Liverpool fans on Twitter have urged their club to re-sign former goalkeeper Pepe Reina amid the injury to Alisson which manager Jurgen Klopp has said will rule him out “for the next few weeks”, however they appear unlikely to get their wish.

The Brazilian suffered the injury issue against Norwich City on Friday, with recent signing Adrian stepping in to replace him during the match.

However, the Merseyside outfit currently have a lack of depth in that position with Caoimhin Kelleher currently recovering from a broken wrist, and it appears as though free-agent Andy Lonergan – who was with the Reds during pre-season – could be the man to fill the void if Klopp’s recent words are true.

That hasn’t stopped Liverpool supporters calling for the return of one of their former heroes in Reina, although any deal would have to involve either an emergency loan or him leaving AC Milan given he has one year left on his contract at the San Siro and with the transfer window now being closed.

While one individual said it “makes perfect sense”, another said “announce Pepe Reina emergency loan”.

The 36-year-old made 395 appearances in all competitions for the Champions League holders according to Transfermarkt, keeping 177 clean sheets.

Leicester fans buzzing after Ayoze Perez’s debut

[ad_pod ]

Ayoze Perez has barely been a Leicester City player for two weeks but he’s already sending shockwaves through the Foxes’ fanbase.

The 25-year-old netted the only goal in their opening pre-season friendly win against League One side Scunthorpe United on Wednesday night.

Their new summer signing particularly caught the eye in the first-half – testing the goalkeeper in the early stages on more than one occasion, before breaking the deadlock with a fine slotted finish after Ricardo Pereira’s cut-back pass in the 35th minute.

Perez joined Leicester in a £30m move from fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle United earlier this month ending a five-year spell at St James’ Park. Last season, he finished as the club’s top-scorer with 12 goals in 37 appearances.

Many fans flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts on his debut performance with one supporter claiming his instinctive positional play was impressive and that he had already formed a good link with fellow summer signing Youri Tielemans.

Others described his showing as immense and brilliant. The 5 foot 10 forward even left one member of the City fanbase surprised, saying he exceeded expectations.

If last night’s reaction is anything to go by then many at the King Power Stadium will love watching the Spaniard in the Premier League next season.

Here’s some of the best reaction from Leicester supporters last night:

Everton must secure summer deal for Wilfried Zaha

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sky Sports News, Everton will meet with Crystal Palace this week to discuss a potential move for Wilfried Zaha ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

What’s the word, then?

Zaha been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, with the Gunners already said to have had a £40m bid rejected.

According to Sky Sports News though, Everton are now very much in the hunt for the Ivory Coast international as they prepare to meet Palace for talks.

The report does not mention a transfer figure, but it seems likely that the Toffees would also have to meet Palace’s £80m asking price in order to complete a deal.

The Merseyside giants have been relatively quiet in this summer’s transfer window, but turning Andre Gomes’ loan deal into a permanent transfer is excellent business, whilst Fabian Delph could turn out to be a shrewd signing from Manchester City.

A swoop for Zaha, though, would certainly send out a clear message that Marco Silva’s team are ready to seriously challenge for a top-six spot next season.

What would Zaha’s signing mean for Everton?

Some will claim that Zaha has already had his chance at a big club, but his switch to Manchester United in 2013 came far too early in his career.

The attacker has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and enjoyed an impressive 2019-20 campaign – scoring 10 times and registering 10 assists in 34 Premier League appearances.

The gap from eighth-placed Everton to sixth-placed Manchester United last season was 12 points and it is difficult to imagine the current top six being broken up due to their financial power and quality across the board.

The signing of Zaha, though, would be a huge step in the right direction. Everton only managed 54 Premier League goals last season, but it would be fair to assume that Zaha would contribute both goals and assists if he arrived at Goodison Park.

A lot will have to go Everton’s way to complete a deal for the Ivorian, but the attacker would be worth every penny as Silva’s team look for a return to Europe.

West Ham fans disappointed with Gary Medel link

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans are not happy with a new link to veteran midfielder Gary Medel.

Hammers insider Ex-West Ham United Employee claims that the Hammers are “keen” on the Chile international.

Medel is 31 and has some Premier League experience, having played for Cardiff City in the 2013-14 season as they were relegated to the Championship.

He made a total of 34 Premier League appearances but did not score a goal, while providing one assist.

Medel has since spent three years with Serie A giants Inter Milan as well as two years at Turkish club Besiktas.

Nevertheless, Hammers fans are not happy with the idea of acquiring Medel in this transfer window, even with Pedro Obiang nearing a departure to Serie A.

Manchester United’s Scott McTominay takes to Instagram after heated moment with Harry Kane

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United’s pre-season friendly with Tottenham Hotspur ended up, perhaps predictably, being a ferocious content.

What was supposed to be just an exhibition match between two teams in good spirits and a relaxed atmosphere took a quick turn when Moussa Sissoko seemingly stamped on the Red Devils’ new signing, Daniel James.

Things got heated in a second and before anyone could do anything to stop it, players were in each other’s faces, with Harry Kane leading the line against Andreas Pereira.

Pretty soon, a big bust-up was in place, and the referee, as well as the other players, had to separate the raging duo.

Scott McTominay was at the heart of it, standing between the two hot-headed players who seemingly forgot the meaning of a friendly match.

In the aftermath of the game, the United academy product took to

/B0WLOEmBDW_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram to share a snap from the eye of the storm.

But not all was bleak and gloomy as Angel Gomes scored his first senior goal for the team and McTominay was quick to congratulate him as well.

Both Gomes and Pereira replied to the snap, the former saying his thanks to his teammate and the latter commenting on the whole situation with a series of emojis, implying that all seems to be well.
