Newcastle fans have mixed views on Joelinton after Jurgen Klopp praise

[ad_pod ]

Following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had some positive words for Magpies forward Joelinton.

Indeed, in quotes carried by The Chronicle, Klopp said that the striker was “outstanding” at Anfield and is “100% made for the Premier League”.

The 23-year-old has scored once in five Premier League appearances for Steve Bruce’s side in the early stages of the 2019/20 campaign.

And a number of Newcastle fans have been on social media discussing the Brazilian.

There are those who feel that Joelinton will prove a success at the club – ultimately scoring the goals to keep the team in the Premier League.

That said, there are also plenty of Newcastle supporters who feel that the South American is not the answer to the club’s goalscoring problems.

It will certainly be interesting to see how many times Joelinton manages to find the net between now and the end of the campaign.

Everton roundup: Silva on Lookman sale, Gbamin injury boost, ‘New Vardy’ on radar

[ad_pod ]

In today’s Everton roundup, we take a look at the news doing the rounds surrounding the Toffees. Manager Marco Silva opens up on the sale of Ademola Lookman, Everton are handed an injury boost regarding Jean-Philippe Gbamin, and the club keeps tabs on youngster David Parkhouse.

Lookman sale a ‘business’ decision, says Silva

Report: When speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the Everton boss opened up about letting Lookman leave for RB Leipzig in July, after a positive five-month loan spell at the club previously. Silva said: “It was not the best thing for me because we can use him more and see more good things from Lookman this season but, in the end, it was not his desire and the club had to look at the business side also. It is what it is.”

Verdict: The report stated that Lookman had two years left on his Everton deal, and according to the words of Silva, it was not his decision to let him leave, but a business matter. Indeed, it was no surprise to see Lookman want to move on because the Englishman started as many league games for Leipzig in five months (7), as he did during all of his top flight campaigns with Everton combined, as per WhoScored.

Now, at 21 years old, it is clear to see that Lookman wants game time and to challenge for the main spot in his position. Unfortunately, there seemed to be no guarantee of that with the Toffees.

Gbamin avoids surgery

Report: As per the Liverpool Echo, Gbamin has avoided the need for surgery after injuring his quadriceps muscle during a training session last month. The report states he is out for at least eight weeks, but after Everton consulted with professionals, it was determined the 23-year-old will not have to go under the knife.

Verdict: Undoubtedly, this is great news for Everton. After signing in the summer for £22.5m, Toffees fans will have been excited to see what the versatile 23-year-old could bring. However, due to the injury sustained last month, Gbamin has only played twice for the club since moving to Merseyside.

Everton have endured a mixed start to the season and while that can’t be wholly blamed on one player, Morgan Schneiderlin’s three outings have yielded just one point for the Merseyside club. Gbamin represents a welcome and arguably much-needed alternative to the former Southampton man, although Silva will have to wait a while still before he can partner him with fellow summer arrival Fabian Delph.

Everton target ‘new Jamie Vardy’

Report: According to Football Insider, Everton have joined Celtic in the race to sign Sheffield United striker David Parkhouse. The 19-year-old impressed loan at League of Ireland Premier Division side Derry City last season and that, combined with his potential availability – he is out of contract at Bramhall Lane at the end of the season – appears to have generated some interest.

Verdict: Parkhouse bagged 10 goals in 27 Premier League games for Derry and also smashed in seven goals in just three League Cup ties, which includes a four-goal haul in the win over Waterford.

Clearly, the youngster has natural goalscoring talent and being labelled the ‘new Jamie Vardy’ is certainly a tag that comes with a lot of expectation, after the former England striker’s rise from the depths of non-league football to the top of the Premier League.

However, Everton face stern competition from Celtic and Blackburn for his signature – both are arguably more likely to give him first-team chances in less challenging leagues – while he could also agree new terms with the Blades.

Wherever Parkhouse ends up though, he seems like a name to keep an ear out for.

Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen likes a tweet that ends Eriksen bust up rumour

It’s all going a bit wrong at Tottenham Hotspur.

At least that’s what the latest rumours on social media would have you believe.

Twitter has been rampant with tales of a training ground bust up at the London club, and despite the fact that none of these rumours have been substantiated some people are believing every word.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Some of these reports were surrounding an apparent falling out between Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen, but the Belgian’s Twitter activity would suggest that these rumours are largely untrue.

A popular Spurs fan account shared a video of the pair walking into training together smiling, and Vertonghen liked that post – suggesting that there are no issues between the two players.

An act as simple as liking a tweet should put a lot of Spurs fans’ minds at rest.

Rather than getting worked up by rumours, the fanbase can now focus on getting behind the team ahead of their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Barcelona fans back Umtiti to regain first-team place

Samuel Umtiti has been unlucky with injuries as of late.

The 25-year-old French defender is yet to return to full fitness after suffering from a foot injury back in September.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But unfortunately, that is not the only setback he has sustained in recent times. Before that, Umtiti used to have a lot of problems with his knee and had to miss 28 games in the 2018/19 season alone.

So far, he’s been out for 49 days with his latest issue and Barcelona will surely hope he manages to recover quickly.

Be that as it may, Clement Lenglet had to step up in Umtiti’s absence and the Blaugrana’s other French centre-back did well.

But now that Umtiti is close to fully recovering, the question remains: is he going to slot back into the starting XI or is he now long past his best?

Many Barcelona fans still believe the 25-year-old can reclaim his spot and they have been calling for him to return while reminding everyone else of his quality.

It seems that many of them still haven’t lost their faith in the unlucky centre-back. You can see some of their replies down in the collection of tweets below:

Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe fails to impress against Eintracht Frankfurt

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

What a wonderful display from Arsenal in the Europa League.

In what had the potential to be a tricky encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt, last season’s semi-finalists, the Gunners ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, albeit with two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

There were a number of stand-out performances on the night. Saka and Joe Willock, in particular, put in dominant displays with WhoScored ratings of 9.4 and 8.09 respectively, while Aubameyang, naturally, also found the back of the net.

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, not everyone will be as happy with their display. Emile Smith-Rowe, in particular, will be ruing his missed opportunity to make an impression.

His paltry 6.2 rating was the lowest of all of his teammates, and it doesn’t tell the whole story. Although he was playing in an advanced, offensive position, he had little influence on Arsenal’s attacking threat. He failed to create a single chance and was also unable to beat his man on any occasion.

There are even more stats that display his ineffectiveness. Other than goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, only Shkodran Mustafi registered a lower pass accuracy than the 19-year-old’s 69.2%, while he was dispossessed three times as much as the next Arsenal player, Aubameyang.

This was the perfect day for the prodigy to show exactly what he is capable of, especially after a year that has seen his development hampered.

He played just three times during his loan spell with RB Leipzig due to injury.

Unfortunately, he was unable to grasp the chance afforded to him on this occasion. With Emery’s team yet to hit full stride, the 19-year-old could have potentially given his manager something to think about with a strong performance.

In the end, though, the former Sevilla boss will likely pursue other options. The only positive note is that he could have another chance to impress against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup next week. He cannot afford to let that opportunity pass him by as well.

Crystal Palace have three players who should be undroppable

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Competition for places at Selhurst Park, in some areas, is pretty rife right now.

You’ve got the likes of Max Meyer and Victor Camarasa missing out in midfield, Martin Kelly sitting out recently despite a decent start to the season, as well as both Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend being left out of the XI in recent weeks.

While Roy Hodgson has changed his XI on a few occasions already this term, dropping Benteke and Townsend as well as Meyer, there are three players who simply have to be the first names on the teamsheet right now…

Cheikhou Kouyate

The Senegal international has starred for the south Londoners this term since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, starting the last four games having sat out the first two.

What Kouyate brings to the side is an energy that is unmatched by any other midfielder at the club, as while James McArthur may have a similar work rate, the former West Ham man’s leggy strides and aerial presence makes him a vital cog in the middle of the park.

Gary Cahill

A low-key free transfer back in the summer, Cahill has shone during James Tomkins’ absence through injury, so much so that we think the 30-year-old may not get back into the team.

The England international – who has recorded a huge 6.3 clearances per game in the Premier League this term – is an experienced, calming presence at the back.

Given his experience and current form, he simply cannot be dropped and has to be one of the first on the teamsheet.

Jordan Ayew

As The Athletic detail well in this article, Palace have had trouble converting chances into goals this season.

Benteke is a golden example of that, missing a simple one on one against Wolves last time out – the Selhurst Park faithful just want someone who can finish.

In Jordan Ayew, the Eagles seem to now have that man to an extent. The Ghanaian has already doubled his tally from last season with two goals coming against Manchester United and Aston Villa, whereas his work rate has been impressive.

He must start week in, week out.

Birmingham must match the ambition of Fran Villalba or end up losing him

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Hopefully the club and the player can get on the same page soon enough.

Having scored his first goal for the club against Middlesbrough last Friday night, Blues midfielder Fran Villalba has talked about the lofty ambitions he hopes to achieve whilst at St Andrew’s.

The Spaniard spoke to Spanish outlet Super Deporte (translated via Sportwitness), in which he outlined how there were many teams after him in the window and exactly why he joined the Blues:

“I had teams here in Spain, but after all, I had to take a step forward, I had to look for my future, and I think I chose well. I think we were right because that option was the best for me. Both me, as my girlfriend, as my parents and my representatives, we all knew that we had to go there and struggle through.

“We took a gamble, I decided to go play there because it is a league that I like, that will help me, and hopefully we are very close to playing in the Premier League; that is one of the best leagues in the world.”

You do wonder with those comments if Villalba did his research before he joined. Birmingham City weren’t exactly in the best of situations financially after their run-in with Financial Fair Play last year, and with boss Pep Clotet still relatively new in the job, they’re not exactly in the best of positions to make a run for promotion this season.

He even mentions later in the article about how competitive the division is with the likes of Fulham, Swansea City, Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion more or less equipped to compete in the Premier League.

Therefore, it’s not as if a club like Birmingham are among the favourites to push for promotion straight away.

However, if Villalba has the ambition to get into the Premier League eventually, and you can’t really blame him for it, then it is up to the club to try and match it or they may risk losing him.

Be it with an injection of cash in the transfer window, or perhaps in a harsher move, a change in the dugout for a manager with a better chance of going up, the club need to do something to convince them to stay for the long term.

Players like Nathan Redmond, Demarai Gray and Che Adams haven’t had their ambitions matched and moved onto the Premier League as a result.

Consequently, they can’t afford a similar situation to arise with Villalba, particularly if he caused as much interest in the summer as he states.

He may be a new face but his goals are completely understandable and Birmingham should be striving for the promised land.

There’s only so long a player can be happy playing in the second tier before wanting to make that push into the big time. So the question is, will he be there with the Blues or without them? Only time will tell.

Man Utd must turn to promising academy stars for Carabao Cup clash

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

This is it Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. A home game against a side languishing in 17th in League One, and in a competition often derided as the Mickey Mouse Cup. If ever there was a perfect opportunity for the Norwegian to fully invest in his promises of a youth revival, then Wednesday night certainly represents it.

The third-round of the Carabao Cup should see Manchester United field a whole host of youngsters, and the game arguably comes at a great time. The Red Devils’ limp and disappointing defeat to West Ham on Saturday caused big questions to be asked. Just what does the future hold for the side? Well, on Wednesday night, Solskjaer has a great chance to give the Old Trafford faithful a more positive glimpse of what the next few years could entail.

As ever with the cup competitions, Sergio Romero is likely to take over goalkeeping duties from David de Gea. In front of him, three out of the back four could become integral parts of United’s long-term future.

Axel Tuanzebe impressed enormously whilst on loan at Aston Villa last season, averaging 3.2 tackles and 3.8 clearances per game, and should get the nod against Rochdale. And, despite the controversy surrounding his conversation with Ed Woodward in the stands on Saturday afternoon, Phil Jones could be given a chance at centre-back.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

At right-back, Diogo Dalot should replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whilst the opposite flank could see a rare opportunity for Brandon Williams. Marcos Rojo has twice come close to leaving the Red Devils in recent summers, and it remains baffling the Argentine started against FC Astana in the Europa League last Thursday. Surely Solskjaer would be better off giving a chance to a 19-year-old academy product instead?

In midfield, the club have confirmed Paul Pogba is back from injury, and ahead of the Premier League clash against Arsenal next Monday, he may be given some minutes to work up his fitness in mid-week.

Further forward, the exciting trio of Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes should all be given the chance to shine once more; they were arguably the highlights of a rather uninspiring 1-0 win over Astana.

And, whilst it may not appease some United fans, Jesse Lingard looks set to play – if he needed a game to get his form back, then there is arguably none better than on Wednesday.

West Ham United Roundup: Johnson rips into Hammers, Pellegrini’s dressing room rant, Benitez on top six

In today’s West Ham United roundup, we take a look at what news has been doing the rounds for the Hammers. Glen Johnson has ripped into the players after the defeat to Oxford United in midweek, it has been revealed what Manuel Pellegrini said to his men post-defeat in the League Cup, and Rafael Benitez has weighed in on the top six debate.

Johnson slams players for ‘not being bothered’

Report: Former England international Johnson has slated the West Ham players for ‘not being bothered’ about the game against Oxford in the Carabao Cup. He told talkSPORT: “They’ve been battered. Yes, they made changes and obviously these competitions can kick up the odd strange result, but to be hammered 4-0… that’s not just exiting the competition, that’s getting battered and destroyed.

“If they lost on penalties or it was 1-0, you think yeah, that can happen in football, but they made nine changes and were clearly played off the park by a mid-table league one side.

“I genuinely don’t get it, it’s a chance of winning trophy and a chance of winning a trophy by February.

“Clubs use it to give young lads minutes and give players who aren’t regularly playing a game, but you can do that at the same time as taking the cup seriously. You can still field a strong side and give a few players a chance.

“But to make nine changes, I think that is blatantly saying, ‘we’re not bothered, we’re just going to keep everybody fit for the weekend’.”

Verdict: It is has been 40 years since West Ham last won a trophy, and this is now the third year in a row the Hammers have been knocked out of a domestic competition thanks to a League One side. Last year saw Wimbledon beat them 4-2 in the FA Cup and the year prior saw Wigan Athletic overcome David Moyes’ men 2-0 in the same competition.

Results like this happening on a consistent basis prove the club are not taking the League Cup as seriously as they should. Despite a potential fight for the top six on the cards, the reality is West Ham are going to struggle to get into Europe, and of course, winning the FA Cup is much harder than reigning supreme in Carabao Cup.

This is a competition Pellegrini should be prioritising. If his side does indeed crack the top six, it will no doubt be classed as a successful season. However, if West Ham ends up outside the top six, and without a trophy, it will be the complete opposite.

It is still, to this day, quite bewildering why clubs of their level do not set their eyes on winning this major trophy.

Benitez on the top six

Report: In a Q&A with The Athletic (as quoted by Inside Futbol), former Liverpool boss Benitez has had his say on the likes West Ham and Leicester City setting their sights on a challenge for the top six.

The current Dalian Yifang manager said: “We talk about ‘six teams’, but for me Leicester, West Ham, Wolves and Everton can progress and challenge.

“Again, I will say Tottenham have all the experience and quality to do well and to stay in the top four.”

Verdict: Although they had such a negative result against Oxford, the Hammers have indeed laid down an early marker in their fight for the top six in the Premier League. Despite the demolition from Manchester City on the opening weekend, Pellegrini’s men have not lost in the league since and most recently registered a famous win over Manchester United, in what was made to look like a routine 2-0 victory.

On the forward front, West Ham have looked very promising and have proved to be a concern for anybody travelling to the London Stadium. Sebastian Haller has three goals in his first five games at the club, Andriy Yarmolenko has bagged twice in the early stages, and Felipe Anderson has seemingly carried on his spectacular form of last season, averaging a rating of a 7.54 rating and providing two assists.

The east London side have certainly put themselves in a great spot early on for the top six battle. But perhaps the Hammers are going to need a bit of fortune along the way with injuries and results elsewhere.

Pellegrini’s dressing room rant

Report: As reported by Football Insider, manager Pellegrini delivered a passionate rant after he was left red-faced following the 4-0 hammering at the hands of Oxford. Normally a calm soul on the touchline, the Chilean reportedly slammed his players post-match for letting him down and was ‘seething’ at his men.

Verdict: When you lose to a side 12th in League One by such a dramatic margin, somebody must take the fall. In these situations, it is too easy to point fingers at the man in charge when in reality, it’s the players who are the ones who should take much of the blame.

Players such as Jack Wilshere, Pablo Zabaleta and Robert Snodgrass are all highly experienced, with some of them boasting of FA Cup and Premier League medals. Ultimately, players in the Premier League are paid more and put on a pedestal based on the fact their ability is far, far superior to a side 75 places below them in the football pyramid, and in reality, there is no excuse for losing to them.

Truthfully, it is harsh to put the blame on Pellegrini, especially considering he has put the club in an early battle for the top six. The Hammers had 63% of the ball against the U’s, registering only nine shots compared to Oxford’s 17, and when all is considered, the Chilean had a right to express his disappointment and anger towards his players for not getting the job done.
