Swann and Strauss lead strong England

England had plenty of reasons to smile after a strong second day against South Australia when most of their main men contributed. Graeme Swann’s second four-wicket collection of the trip helped finish off the hosts for 221 after James Anderson had removed three of the top six, while Stuart Broad and Steven Finn also had some success.Andrew Strauss finished the day with a rollicking 56 as England reached 0 for 94, a lead of 67, and the side was also boosted by Alastair Cook being not out on 37. Cook, the vice-captain, has struggled in the early stages of the trip and is desperately chasing a big score to feel settled before the opening Test on November 25. Strauss has no such worries and bashed three sixes and five fours, with his fifty coming at almost a run a ball.Swann was wicket-less for his first 17 overs but then captured four victims, giving up 68 runs from 22.4 overs. Aiden Blizzard (49) went sweeping, Tim Lang hit to mid-on, Ben Edmondson was lbw and Peter George, the No.11, was stumped to end the innings.Rain delayed the start of play by an hour and South Australia were in difficulty soon after resuming at 0 for 26. James Smith nicked Broad to Matt Prior the ball before Anderson had Daniel Harris caught by Jonathan Trott at square leg. Trott later left for treatment on his shoulder after jarring it attempting a catch on the boundary, but returned to the field in good health.Finn continues to improve and delivered a strong spell before lunch in which he forced Callum Ferguson to miscue a pull shot on 35, and he returned later in the day to bowl Jake Haberfield. Anderson watched Michael Klinger cut hard to Kevin Pietersen at point and followed up by clipping Graham Manou’s glove on the way to Strauss at first slip.

Aston Villa receive worrying Digne update

Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne could miss the rest of the Premier League season after sustaining a collar bone injury in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at Villa Park.

What’s the story?

The Frenchman suffered a nasty-looking collarbone injury in the defeat to Spurs that manager Steven Gerrard fears could sideline the 28-year-old for the remainder of the campaign.

Gerrard said to the media after the game: “I’m concerned and worried about it because he’s in a sling right now. We’ve got a collarbone issue rather than a shoulder issue. If it’s what we fear, it could be season over.

“We’ll analyse it in the next 24 hours in terms of scans and we’ll have a medical report on it but the doctors have said they are worried and concerned and that tells you the story.”

It’s not the first injury Digne has suffered since making the move from Everton in January with the Frenchman’s whole campaign being full of setbacks.

Supporters will be gutted

Although Digne was omitted from the Everton team by former manager Rafa Benitez for the final four games of his time at Goodison Park, the signing of the left-back was certainly exciting for Villa fans.

The Frenchman, who was purchased for £25m, has an excellent pedigree having earned 44 senior caps for France as well as playing for both PSG and Barcelona.

Moreover, Digne averages 1.7 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game as well as having a 77% passing accuracy.

However, since making the move to the West Midlands, a tricky season for the 28-year-old has been made worse with numerous injury setbacks, making settling into the side tricky for Digne.

Saturday was the third time the left-back has had to be withdrawn from a game due to injury since joining Aston Villa, all of which being separate issues.

Moreover, with Matt Targett currently on loan at Newcastle United, Gerrard is now short of options at left-back with 36-year-old Ashley Young the only other alternative.

Villa have already lost their last four matches in the league so without Digne, it could mean dire consequences for the rest of the season.

Leeds may need to reduce Helder Costa fee

Leeds United will need to reduce their €20m (£16.7m) asking price for Helder Costa in order for Valencia to sign him permanently, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Costa on loan at Valencia

The Portuguese was deemed surplus to requirements by Marcelo Bielsa last summer, with numerous attacking players ahead of him in the pecking order at Elland Road.

Costa hasn’t set the world alight at Valencia this season either, scoring no goals and registering just one assist in 15 La Liga appearances to date.

It seems unlikely that Leeds envisage any kind of future for the 28-year-old, and a fresh update has now emerged regarding his situation with his parent club.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Valencia unwilling to pay Costa’s asking price

According to ElDesmarque Valencia [via Sport Witness], Valencia are looking at making some loan deals permanently but Costa’s situation needs to change.

It is claimed that they aren’t willing to pay €20m (£16.7m) for his services and the Whites will ‘need to negotiate’ the fee due to the current amount being ‘inaccessible’ for the La Liga outfit.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-34/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Reduce the fee and take the money

It may not be ideal for Leeds having to drop their asking price, but receiving a healthy fee for Costa would still be a bonus, considering that he seems to have no future at the Yorkshire club and is valued at just £7.2m by Transfermarkt.

That money could be used on players who Bielsa sees as future signings rather than unwanted individuals, hopefully strengthening the depth within the Argentine’s squad.

Costa has had his moments for Leeds, scoring eight goals and chipping in with 11 assists in 71 matches for the Whites – also, he was once hailed as ‘immense’ by his former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo – but the time has come to bring an end to his career at Elland Road, having netted only once for the first team since September 2020.

Everton must complete Jovic transfer

Everton have had a difficult season in the Premier League this time around, having won just seven of their 27 played games, drawing four and losing 16 along the way.

One other worrying factor of their campaign is the lack of goals they’ve managed to score, with the Toffees finding the back of the net just 29 times, leaving only Norwich City, Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion with fewer goals.

This could be down to the fact that the Merseyside club have had to go through the majority of the season with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the sidelines through injury after he managed to score 16 league goals in the previous campaign.

To make things worse for Frank Lampard’s side, recent reports have claimed that the club are willing to sell their English striker in the summer, with fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and West Ham United reportedly interested in him.

With that in mind, if Everton were to cash in on the 25-year-old in the coming months, this could pave the way for the club to make a swoop for another striker that they have been recently mentioned with.

According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet AS (via TEAMtalk) Real Madrid are looking to get rid of Luka Jovic in the summer, with Everton being mentioned as a potentially interested party to sign the striker, who has been dubbed as “magical” by Lionel Messi.

Having scored just three goals in 49 appearances for the La Liga giants since his arrival back in the 2019 summer transfer window, it’s easy to see why they would be looking to move the 24-year-old on.

However, having found the back of the net 40 times in 93 appearances with Eintracht Frankfurt, the £16.2m-rated ace has shown that he is capable of being a consistent goalscorer, which is something that the Toffees have desperately needed in this campaign.

Moving forward, if Calvert-Lewin does end up making a move away from Goodison Park this summer, then Farhad Moshiri could then use the money raised for the Englishman to potentially give Jovic the chance to put an end to his nightmare in Madrid and have a go at playing in the Premier League, which could be a very tempting prospect for the Serbian.

From Lampard’s point of view, having a fairly young striker in his ranks that has experience of playing across Europe and scoring goals that can be a long-term feature at the club, this should be a dream deal for the club to complete.

Having been fairly active in the previous January transfer window, bringing in the likes of Dele Alli, Donny van de Beek, Nathan Patterson, Vitaliy Mykolenko and Anwar El Ghazi, Everton certainly have the means to back their managed once again in the summer, if they manage to avoid getting relegated.

Benitez could score a swap deal for Digne

The ongoing rumoured feud between Rafa Benitez and Lucas Digne at Everton has further encouraged more rumours to develop surrounding the left back’s future at Goodison Park, especially with the transfer window opening in a few days time.

What’s the word?

According to Italian news outlet, TuttoJuve, Juventus could offer a swap deal of Aaron Ramsey to Everton in exchange for Digne during the January transfer window.

However, according to the report this would only be a short term loan until the end of the season, to help Juventus to cover their position for the rest of the season and get the Welshman’s salary off the wage bill at the Italian club.

Ramsey can’t get into the Juventus team with just two appearances in the Serie A this season so far, with the club making it no secret that they are interested in offers for the 31-year-old, who is currently on a whopping £175K a week.

Digne has now not featured in the last three games for Everton, with Benitez asked recently in a press conference if he believes that the 28-year-old was ill after he pulled out of the squad last minute, the Toffees boss responded;

“It is not that I believe or not,”

“I have been in football for so many years and I have so many experiences similar to this one and it is a question of making a decision.

“I have to be sure that the players that will be there tomorrow want to be there and they want to fight for the club and that’s it.”

Is it the right move?

There is no doubt that Ramsey has talent, and when he is not injured, he has proven at the clubs he has played at that he can offer performances at the highest level, playing in the Champions League for both Arsenal and Juventus with 78 appearances in the competition over his career, however, if it is at the cost of losing Digne it may not be worth it.

Digne has been with Everton since the Summer of 2018 when he joined the club from Barcelona and has since offered 127 appearances, six goals and an impressive 20 assists from his full-back position so far, with Gary Lineker taking to his Twitter account back in 2019 to praise the £27M-rated gem hailing him “quality”;

“What an excellent signing Lucas Digne has been for @Everton. Quality fullback. 👍🏻”

With that being said, a loan deal could be beneficial for Digne’s long term future with the Merseyside club, if he could go away keeping up match fitness with another team, whilst allowing his rumoured feud with Benitez to cool down, going into pre-season in the Summer of 2022 back with Everton, with the opportunity of a fresh start.

Dickason gets update from IPL's security experts

The concerns of the foreign players regarding security during the IPL seem to have eased with the league deciding to collaborate with the independent security expert appointed by the player unions from Australia, England and South Africa

After nearly a month of wrangling, the concerns of the foreign players regarding security during the IPL seem to have eased with Reg Dickason, the independent security expert appointed by the player unions from Australia, England and South Africa, receiving an official update from the league’s security experts.Tim May, the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) chief, called the development a welcome step in the on-going discussions, which came to a standstill after the IPL’s initial refusal to cooperate.”The one outstanding issue (as) per Reg’s report is that while Nicholls-Steyn’s (the agency in charge of IPL security) plan is sound – it is nothing more than a series of recommendations that are made to local security authorities,” May said. “They may or may not be agreed to by the local authorities.”In fact, that was Dickason’s biggest concern, and he advised the player bodies to make a note of that in their meetings with the players. He also requested the IPL for formal confirmation from the local authorities that the recommendations would be implemented. “Despite media comment from IPL officials that such government assurance has been given – Nicholls-Steyn have advised Reg that they can not get such assurances,” May said.To avoid any further clash, it was suggested by FICA that the IPL needed to declare what the local security was willing to help with. “As a compensating measure we recently requested from IPL a status report of what has or hasn’t been confirmed and proposed a system of communication regarding any shortfalls of the required plans,” May said. “Reg received this update and commitment regarding ongoing communication last (Sunday) evening. This is positive in terms of accurate information that we are able to put in front of the players.”Last week, Dickason dismissed the threat from 313 Brigade, the operational arm of Al Qaeda in Pakistan, after having deemed it credible in his initial assessment report. But, simultaneously, he had asked the IPL to specify to him the security implementations at the various venues. The league officials, however, were unwilling to share any such information and Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, was vocal in his resistance over sharing security details with the player unions and even warned the foreign players of losing their lucrative IPL contracts in future. Left with no choice, Dickason prepared his original report after reviewing the security plans the IPL sent to various national cricket boards.May had warned the tournament organisers that such stiff resistance could only worsen the issue and even lead to mass withdrawals. FICA had been entrusted by the Australian Cricketers’ Association, England’s Players Cricketers’ Association and the South African Cricketers’ Association to liaise with the IPL.Modi, though, appears to have softened his stance since. “Already a lot of the players are on planes on their way to India and will arrive in the next few days,” he wrote on his Twitter page. “Security is very important to us. We have not had to change our plans, I think it is more a case of the players now understanding them. I think they are more comfortable with the plans being implemented.”

Deccan choke after Mathews, Shah comeback

Kolkata Knight Riders showed more character than perhaps the first two seasons put together to survive early blows by oldies Chaminda Vaas and Adam Gilchrist at the start of each innings

Andrew Symonds and several other Deccan batsmen got out to poor shots (file photo)•Associated PressKolkata Knight Riders showed more character than perhaps the first two seasons put together to survive early blows by veterans Chaminda Vaas and Adam Gilchrist at the start of each innings. First Angelo Mathews and Owais Shah added 130 runs from 31 for 4 to put up a fighting total. Their effort was going in vain with Gilchrist rushing towards the target, but their bowlers picked up their game to take regular wickets and allow Deccan Chargers only 51 runs in the last nine overs. Kolkata scored 58 in their last four.It was as much Deccan throwing it away as Kolkata pulling it back. Gilchrist, who had been dropped twice on his way to fifty, started the turnaround by pulling Brad Hodge straight to deep square leg. In the next over Herschelle Gibbs holed out to long-off. Two overs later Andrew Symonds went to slog the first delivery he faced from Ishant Sharma and top-edged. Two more overs later Rohit Sharma was fooled by a Mathews slower bouncer, and 99 for 1 had become 128 for 5. All that with the required run-rate never going too much past eight per over.Kolkata were there to accept the gifts with aggressive field placings and good bowling changes. If bowling Hodge was an inspired move, return spells for Karthik, Langeveldt and Ishant were positive decisions by a captain who knew only wickets could win him the match. The diving saves returned, Ganguly looked charged and Kolkata somehow looked like the team that was going to win even with the required rate reaching the improbable only in the last over.Thirty-four off 22 balls with only Indian domestic batsmen and the tail to follow was always going to be a tight finish, and Mathews, Laxmi Shukla, Langeveldt and Ishant completed the choke for Deccan with a good mix of yorkers, bouncers and slower ones.If they had a target that wasn’t blown away by the Gilchrist start, it was only thanks to Mathews himself and Shah. Vaas had dutifully adopted the essence of the previous IPL – first-ball wickets, and gone on to make it a double-wicket maiden. A double-strike followed soon, and memories of Kolkata’s horror 2009 came rushing back. Mathews and Shah, however, averted a one-sided start to the tournament with a partnership that seamlessly went from sensible to sizzling. One cute paddle over fine leg excepting, Mathews employed strong hitting down the ground. Shah, on the other hand, employed the pick-up shot, almost a sweep of the fast bowlers, to good effect, hitting Symonds, Vaas and Jaskaran for sixes. The tournament began with the class of Vaas. He started on target, swinging the ball late, and Manoj Tiwary fell over playing the first ball, and lobbed it straight to midwicket. Captain Sourav Ganguly edged to first slip in that double-wicket maiden, and Cheteshwar Pujara and Brad Hodge too departed after a 31-run stand.Pragyan Ojha and Symonds initially managed to keep Mathews and Shah in check. In eight overs between them, their accurate and smart mid-innings bowling went for 45 runs despite expensive last overs that went for 21.That was just the momentum the stumbling innings needed, taking Kolkata to 103 for 4 after 16 overs. During that period, Mathews had moved from starting with a top-edged six to attacking youngster Jaskaran Singh in a calculated manner.Shah, who had been quiet until then, went after the returning Vaas, hitting him for a six and four. Mathews followed it up and launched his countryman over long-off, and 2-1-4-2 became 3-1-22-2.With the score reading 121 for 4 after 17 overs, Gilchrist made two bold moves. T Suman bowled the 18th over, and was punished by Mathews, who reached his fifty in that over. He carried the momentum into the 19th over, hurting RP Singh too with straight, powerful hitting. Jaskaran, preferred to Vaas for the last over, bowled three yorkers and a good slower delivery, but still went for 10. It left the Kolkata bowlers with a target to bowl at.The up-and-down match, with at least four swings in fortunes, and featuring good old-fashioned swing bowling, orthodox and unorthodox hitting, was a much-needed and much-denied relief from a rather unwatchable opening ceremony – featuring faded stars and a fading tribute band – that delayed the toss by 27 minutes.

Sachin Tendulkar will not play in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Delhi to be played in Mumbai.Tendulkar had opted out of the Indian team for next month’s tri-series in Bangladesh. His place in the national side was taken by Rohit Sharma, fuelling speculation that Tendulkar would replace him in the Mumbai squad for the Ranji fixture starting on Sunday. However, Mumbai coach Pravin Amre reasoned that since Tendulkar had taken a break for rest, there was no chance of his playing in the domestic match.”He has opted out of the Bangladesh tri-series to take rest and is not available for the semi-finals. The team is going to be picked tomorrow,” Amre told PTI.The absence of Tendulkar, Rohit and Zaheer Khan will leave Mumbai short on experience, similar to the Delhi squad that will miss the services of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Ashish Nehra. However, Ishant Sharma’s return to the side will be a shot in the arm for the visitors.”Both the teams are missing some players but have the momentum going into the game,” Amre said.Allrounder Abhishek Nayar has been included in Mumbai’s squad for the semi-final clash – the lone change in the defending champions’ lineup that got past Haryana in the quarterfinal after picking up first-innings points.Squad: Wasim Jaffer (capt), Ajit Agarkar, Praful Waghela, Sahil Kukreja, Ajinkya Rahane, Prashant Naik, Sushant Marathe, Ramesh Powar, Vinayak Samant (wk), Usman Malvi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Onkar Khanvilkar, Abhsishek Nayar, Avishkar Salvi and Iqbal Abdulla
