Somerset clinch runners-up spot

ScorecardAbdur Rehman finished with match figures of 14 for 101 as Somerset clinched runners-up spot in Division One with victory over relegated Worcestershire by an innings and 148 runs at Taunton.Rehman took 5 for 36 as the visitors stumbled to 152 all out in their second innings, Alexei Kervezee top-scoring with 76 and Peter Trego claiming his 50th first-class wicket of the season. The hosts took 23 points to Worcestershire’s two as their players guaranteed themselves a share in a £162,000 cheque for finishing second behind champions Warwickshire.Somerset had batted on at the start of the day before declaring their first innings on 512 for 9, with a lead of 300. Nick Compton finished unbeaten on 155, just six short of 1,500 first-class runs. Compton, who faced 322 balls and hit 15 fours and a six, was left with a first-class average of 99.60 when the declaration came. Six more runs would have left him averaging 100.Moeen Ali returned figures of 4 for 143, but by far the best Worcestershire bowler was Alan Richardson, who claimed his 500th first-class victim when pinning Alfonso Thomas lbw for 17, and finished with 4 for 100 from 41 overs.A three-day finish always looked likely and Worcestershire lost two wickets in scoring 39 before lunch. Phil Hughes edged Trego to wicketkeeper Steve Snell and Daryl Mitchell was caught at slip off Rehman. The Hughes wicket sparked wild celebrations among the fielders as they all mobbed Trego for whom it was a notable milestone in his career. The 31-year-old all-rounder had never threatened to take 50 wickets before, but has bowled more overs than ever for Somerset because of injuries this season. After lunch there was a predictable procession of batsmen. Thomas trapped Neil Pinner leg before for 14 and Craig Overton struck in his first over as Marcus Trescothick took a sharp catch at second slip to send back Moeen for 24.Rehman then produced perfectly pitched turning deliveries to bowl Aneesh Kapil and Brett D’Olivera, both pushing forward defensively, before Ben Cox fell to a brilliant catch at mid-wicket by Arul Suppiah as he pulled a short ball from Steve Kirby. It was 129 for 8 when Chris Russell was snapped up at leg-slip by Trego off a Rehman arm-ball, having made only a single. Kervezee stood defiant, reaching his half-century off 64 balls with six fours, although he was steadily running out of partners as Nick Harrison played on to Thomas and departed for a duck.Kervezee was the last wicket to fall, pouched at slip by Trescothick off Man-of-the-Match Rehman.

Ruby Monaghan, who has died at the age of 96, was the second woman to face a ball in Test cricket when she opened for Australia against England at Brisbane’s Exhibition Ground in 1934-35.Picked as an 18-year-old after a strong performance for New South Wales against the tourists a fortnight before the first Test, the diminutive Monaghan played her only two internationals in that inaugural series but managed just 29 runs in her four innings. She took to cricket after playing Vigaro, a then-popular game sometimes described as a hybrid version of cricket and baseball. She played softball and tennis after retiring from cricket.Monaghan was retrospectively awarded Women’s Test Baggy Green cap No. 3 after Australian men’s and women’s cricket administration were merged in 2003.

Rajshahi storm into semi-finals

ScorecardSean Ervine (far left) took three wickets to wreck Khulna’s middle order•BPL T20

Three wickets each from Mohammad Sami and Sean Ervine helped Duronto Rajshahi thrash Khulna Royal Bengals in Mirpur, and become the first team to qualify for the Bangladesh Premier League semi-finals. Rajshahi shot Khulna out for 106, and they reached the target in just 14.1 overs thanks to a blazing 28 from Shahzaib Hasan and a half-century from Marlon Samuels.Rajshahi got off to an ideal start when Sami trapped Sanath Jayasuriya lbw with the second ball of the match. They stayed on top for the length of the game. Herschelle Gibbs was dismissed by Abdul Razzaq and then Ervine struck three times to cause a middle-order collapse. Sami came back to wipe out the tail and Khulna were bowled out in 18.5 overs. The chase was straightforward. Hasan gave Rajshahi a blazing start, and Samuels kept the momentum going, scoring 50 off 38 balls. Shakib Al Hasan was impressive again, bowling his four overs for just 17 runs, and dismissing Hasan, but Rajshahi were always comfortable in the chase.

Smooth sailing to Caribbean T20 title, says Ramdin

Denesh Ramdin, the Trinidad & Tobago captain, has said it was smooth sailing for his side in the Caribbean T20 after losing to Windward Islands in their first match

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jan-2012Denesh Ramdin, the Trinidad & Tobago captain, has said it was smooth sailing for his side in the Caribbean T20 after losing to Windward Islands in their first match. Jamaica, the defending champions, lost by 11 runs to Windward Islands at North Sound, and Ramdin said it was the “kick up the backside” they needed to focus for the rest of the tournament.”We are known as the Red Force and we showed we are a true force,” Ramdin told the . “We didn’t get it right in the first match, Windwards gave us a kick up the backside, but we came back as a strong force against Leeward Islands and Guyana. After that, it was smooth sailing because we know we have matchwinners in all departments.”Both Ramdin and the T&T coach Kevin Williams said they were surprised at how easily Jamaica rolled over in the final. T&T won by 63 runs, after Jamaica never appeared to make a serious attempt to chase their total of 168.”We actually thought Jamaica would have been stronger in the final, but our bowlers did a fantastic job in the first six overs and that squeezed them,” Ramdin said. “After that, we knew we had the trophy in our hands.”Williams said it was satisfying to prevent Jamaica from holding all the Caribbean domestic titles simultaneously. “Seeing that it was a final, we expected Jamaica to put up more of a fight,” he told the . “We spoke about it and we knew that, if they won, they would hold the four-day, 50-over and Twenty20 trophies, and it was nice to stop them from achieving that and defend our title in style.”After the game, Andre Russell and Shawn Findlay revealed there was division in their Jamaica team that affected their performance.Ramdin took over from Daren Ganga as captain before the Caribbean T20 and Williams said he had done well to achieve immediate success. Williams said T&T had raised the bar further in terms of the quality of Twenty20 cricket played in the Caribbean, and that the next step was to achieve something in the Champions League T20, for which T&T have qualified for the third time. “I always say we raised the bar for T20 cricket in the Caribbean and the other teams were playing catch-up, and it is nice to know we can raise it a little higher,” Williams said. “It is a great achievement for us qualifying for the Champions League again; we have not done anything in that tournament as yet but it is still a great achievement for us.”The semi-finals and final of this year’s Caribbean T20 were played in Bridgetown, as they were in 2010-11, and Ramdin said it had become like a home ground for T&T. “It was great to see the way our fans came out and supported us here in Barbados for the semi-finals and final. It was like a home away from home,” he said. “Also, we were delighted that the games were being broadcast all over the world so the fans could see the talent in our team as well as all the talent in the other teams across the Caribbean.”

Atuação do Peixe

Warne v Gilchrist in Mohali

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL game between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in Mohali

The Preview by Sidharth Monga20-Apr-2011Match factsThursday, April 21, Mohali
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Colours have changed, teams have changed, but life’s still good•Getty ImagesBig pictureAdam Gilchrist contributed to 59 of Shane Warne’s Test wickets either through catches or stumpings, one more than Ian Healy did. And then there were the endless plans that the two would have worked out together. On Thursday, they will be using their cricket expertise and their knowledge of each other’s games to try and beat the other guy’s team. More than other captains, perhaps, Gilchrist and Warne have left deeper imprints on teams they have led in the IPL. They have won the thing once each too.

This year, Gilchrist seeks to leave his imprint on a new side, the Kings XI Punjab, while Rajasthan Royals have loyally retained Warne. They have had contrasting starts to their campaign. Rajasthan began with two wins before running into two defeats at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders. Punjab lost their first game, didn’t bowl exceptionally in their second, but then Paul Valthaty changed it all, winning them that game and the next. While Punjab will look to carry on that momentum, Rajasthan will look to arrest the slide.Team talkThe last time Rajasthan played, they missed the injured Rahul Dravid and Johan Botha. While Dravid should walk into the XI if he is fit, it will be interesting to see if Rajasthan drop Shaun Tait for Botha. On current form, and considering the all-round skills of Botha, they should. Amit Paunikar hasn’t got going as an opener, and his place could also come under scrutiny.
In their last game, Punjab brought in an extra seamer in Vikramjeet Singh Malik. It will be interesting to see if they persist with that winning combination in Mohali. In the spotlightAt the moment, Paul Valthaty seems to be incapable of committing a mistake. In the last two games, he has scored a century and a fifty, and has also taken four wickets with his split-finger slower balls. If he keeps going in this vein, he is likely to stay on the winning side.
Shane Watson was one of the cornerstones of the success that Rajasthan Royals tasted in their first season. This time, though, he has got off to a slow start, scoring only 33 in two games. Rajasthan will look for some of what he did in Bangladesh immediately before coming to the IPL.Prime numbersValthaty needs 36 runs to take back the orange cap from Sachin Tendulkar.Rajasthan’s leadin run-getter, Johan Botha with 118, is only the 15th best in the overall list. That represents some of Rajasthan’s problems. The chatter”He is known to spring surprises on the opposition. So we have to be ready for the challenges thrown at us.”

Ruthless South Africa win by 135 runs

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
AB de Villiers’ 76 off 69 balls set up what turned out to be a winning total of 289 for South Africa•Getty Images

India had to survive the new ball if they were going to make a fist of chasing 290 but they were gasping for breath within 11 overs, after slipping to 43 for 4, and never quite recovered. South Africa had threatened twice to run away to a mammoth total in their innings. India pulled them back on both occasions to keep the target below 300, but the chase went nowhere. South Africa were 82 for 2 in the 14th over before Munaf Patel removed Hashim Amla to slow the innings down, but the hosts bounced back to reach 213 for 3 in the 36th over, when AB de Villiers fell and India clawed their way back once again. The ball was expected to do a bit under lights and the top order, barring Virat Kohli, collapsed without much fight. The dismissal of Yuvraj Singh perfectly captured South Africa’s dominance on a bouncy track. Morne Morkel got one to kick up and jag away from Yuvraj, who got his feet into an awful tangle, and ended up stabbing the ball to first slip.It was that kind of a night: the India batsmen struggled to adapt to the conditions and they went down in a heap. M Vijay was trapped in front in the first over of the innings by a full delivery from Dale Steyn and Sachin Tendulkar perished to a pre-determined move to shuffle across his stumps. There was a short fine-leg in place for Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Tendulkar moved across to drag a short-of-length delivery past that fielder but only succeeded in top-edging a dolly to Steyn.India recovered from 13 for 2 to reach 41 without further damage but a double strike by Morne Morkel pushed them further back. Morne had hustled and hurried Rohit Sharma into having a few injudicious wafts outside off but Rohit was eventually unlucky to be given out, caught behind by AB de Villiers. It was a gem of a delivery that kicked up and straightened just outside off and Rohit hit his pad with the bat as he pushed inside the line but the umpire mistook the sound for an edge.Yuvraj proved a walking wicket in these seaming conditions and India were left staring down the barrel after MS Dhoni’s run out just before the half-way mark. Kohli hit a straight drive but the bowler Wayne Parnell got a hand on it to accidentally run out Dhoni and leave India with a mountain to climb. Kohli hung around for a while but once he fell to Steyn, the lower order just crumbled.South Africa’s bowlers blew away India but it was their batsmen who set up the win. It was a fascinating late afternoon at Durban after Amla’s exit. There was an imminent threat of a collapse in the air: South Africa had a long tail, JP Duminy can be an iffy starter against spin and the ball was starting to stop on the batsman a touch. de Villiers and Duminy initially batted like men who were aware of these threats. They added 47 runs in a little over 12 overs and the hosts had reached 132 for 3 in 25.4 overs when a single shot turned things around for them. de Villiers charged down the track to Harbhajan Singh and didn’t quite seem to connect well, but his sliced golf shot sent the ball into the screaming fans beyond long-off. When Duminy slog swept Yuvraj Singh for a six in the next over, it was official: they had broken free of the shackles. They followed it up with a smart move: they took the Batting Powerplay in the 28th over and looted 45 runs off the five overs. de Villiers made 28 of them, with a hat-trick of fours – a pull, a skillful inside-out hit over cover, and a slice over point – against Ashish Nehra in the final Powerplay over to leave South Africa sitting pretty at 192 for 3.Things were looking dire for India and Dhoni decided to bring in part-time spinners Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. de Villiers pulled Rohit straight to deep midwicket in the 36th over, David Miller played inside the line to lose his off stump against Raina in the 39th, and then in the 42nd Duminy missed a reverse sweep and was trapped in front by Rohit. The tail didn’t have the skill to add too many and South Africa meandered along to their final score. It was quite a contrast to the frenetic start to the innings, with Amla going after Nehra in some style. The bat-speed was rapid, and time and again he played on the up and through the line. There were some trademark cover drives on a stretched front foot and the highlight was the hat-trick of fours he unleashed against Nehra in the seventh over. Amla whacked a short ball to the midwicket boundary, then walked down the pitch to lace a length delivery to the left of mid-off before he pinged that region with an off drive. There was a caressed straight drive for three runs in the same over and he put away a couple of slower ones from Munaf for boundaries. His dismissal put pressure on the middle order but de Villiers and Duminy ensured that their bowlers had a score to defend.

Isso me ajudou demais – comentou o volante do Fluminense.
