India will rotate openers – Sehwag

Call it a lesson learned from the Test series or the importance of fielding in one-day cricket, but India are going to give their young batsmen a long run in the ODI series

Sidharth Monga in Perth07-Feb-2012Call it a lesson learned from the Test series or the importance of fielding in one-day cricket, but India are going to give their young batsmen a long run in the ODI series. That is an important call especially considering the return of Sachin Tendulkar to the ODI fold. In normal circumstances one of the youngsters would have had to make way for him, but now India are looking to rotate the openers – Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Tendulkar. It also explains why Sehwag didn’t play the previous ODI, at the MCG. It also indicates that either Gambhir or Tendulkar will sit out if Sehwag is to play. “We are giving breaks to top three batsmen,” Sehwag said. “Maybe tomorrow is somebody else’s turn. Either Gautam or Tendulkar will take a break, and maybe I can play.” Indications, though, are Sehwag will play, and Gambhir will rest.Sehwag explained the thinking behind the concept of resting one of the top-order batsmen, and not one out or Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. “We want to give chances to the youngsters because the next World Cup is here [in Australia and New Zealand],” Sehwag said. “Make sure all the youngsters can play all the matches here, and get used to the conditions for the time they come to play for the next World Cup. It is good thinking.”We have good youngsters. [What is] important is, they have to play more one-dayers so they have experience when the World Cup comes. That’s our aim. When the World Cup is there, they should have played at least 75-100 ODIs, so they are ready for the World Cup.”It is worth noting that in the Test series India didn’t change their batting line-up or the order despite continued failures. It showed a distinct lack of faith in Rohit Sharma’s ability as a batsman. As of now, the ODI side is reacting differently although there are calls for rotating the youngsters too after their performance in the Melbourne ODI. Suresh Raina fell to the short ball again, and Rohit didn’t look comfortable either. However, to act so hastily would be akin to having dropped Virat Kohli after the MCG Test, the demerits of which Kohli demonstrated in the rest of the series.About his own break, Sehwag said he felt good for it. “Sometimes it is good. You are playing four Test matches and then Twenty20s and then you play in one-dayers” Sehwag said. “If you get a break, the body’s fatigue, the mental fatigue, goes away. That break is good for the players. That’s why we decided the top three batsmen can be given breaks. We can rotate Tendulkar, Gambhir, Sehwag. Then all the youngsters can play.”There is another set of thinking that has been harder to fathom, though. It is the use of two specialist spinners when the side already has two part-time spinners, and the selection of the spinning allrounder, Ravindra Jadeja, on top of that, ahead of the seaming allrounder, Irfan Pathan. Sehwag said there was no imbalance in the squad. “We are clear from day one we are going to play with two spinners if the wicket is dry, and Jadeja is an allrounder,” Sehwag said. “[It looks] pretty good at the moment.”However, Sehwag said the side was not set on the strategy of playing two spinners by default. “Tomorrow we can see the wicket. Captain will see the wicket, and make the decision. Maybe Perth is different so we can play three or four fast bowlers here.”When asked why there was such a change in tactics, considering India often play three seamers even in the slower conditions at home, Sehwag said it was part of a plan. “It’s captain, coach and team management strategy that we can play with two spinners, especially in Melbourne with big boundaries,” Sehwag said. “The wicket was dry, the ball was, maybe, stopping and coming. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. In India it is difficult with spinners bowling in Powerplays. We played with two spinners [in India] too. Ashwin and Harbhajan played against Australia in [the World Cup] quarterfinals.”

Misbah-ul-Haq masterminds narrow win

Misbah-ul-Haq’s supremely paced innings and Sohail Tanvir’s nerveless hitting took Pakistan to a tense win in Napier that puts them 2-1 up

Pakistan continued to show they are masters of making mountains out of molehills, but Misbah-ul-Haq’s supremely paced innings and Sohail Tanvir’s nerveless hitting took them to a tense win in Napier that puts them 2-1 up. New Zealand had earlier showed the benefits of stacking their side with allrounders as they recovered from an all-too-familiar top-order collapse to post a respectable total but it didn’t prove enough. On a pancake-flat track and with McLean Park’s short boundaries and a quick outfield to assist them, Pakistan looked to be gliding towards victory when Misbah and Younis Khan played safety-first cricket to take them to 173 for 3 in 37 overs. With the batting Powerplay in hand, two set batsmen at the crease and a host of heavy-hitters to follow, New Zealand seemed down and out.The first blip was the run-out of Younis who slipped when attempting to regain his ground after tipping the ball to point. The new batsman, Umar Akmal, meandered to 10 when the Powerplay was taken. As has been the case in recent matches, the Powerplay resulted in immediate wickets: Umar holed out to extra cover and Shahid Afridi was trapped in front. With Pakistan at 198 for 6, New Zealand were back in it.The match swung again in the next over as Abdul Razzaq clubbed a mighty six, and Misbah calmly picked off two effortless, wristy boundaries as Tim Southee went for 17. New Zealand clawed back again when Hamish Bennett had Razzaq skying a catch to Vettori in the 47th over.Twenty-four needed off the final three overs – enough time for more twists. Misbah, yet again, seemed to have sealed it when he slammed Scott Styris beyond midwicket off the first ball of the 48th, and then followed it up with a punch past mid-on for four. No. 10 Wahab Riaz then decided to go for glory instead of turning over the strike to Misbah, and his swipe ballooned to the keeper.Only two wickets remained, and there was a genuine threat of Pakistan being bowled out. Tanvir then showed that though his bowling isn’t at the level it was before his back injury, his hitting retains the ferocity of old. He forehanded three fours in the penultimate over from Southee to sew up the victory with six balls remaining.Tanvir may have applied the finishing touches but it was Misbah who had done the grunt work earlier on. When Pakistan were wobbling at 84 for 3, Misbah and Younis stroked the ball into the gaps for singles to keep the required rate in check. Their 89-run partnership had put Pakistan in charge, before the slew of wickets led to an exciting denouement. It was Misbah’s finest one-day effort, and his first significant contribution in the format in a long time. With 18 days to go for the World Cup, Pakistan are still without a captain, and this series hasn’t made the decision easier for the selectors. Afridi was panned after the heavy defeat in the first match, then praised after his electric half-century in the Christchurch victory, and Misbah has now pushed his case with this match-winning innings.New Zealand continue to desperately seek someone who can provide Misbah-like calmness to their famously fragile top order. Today, their stuttering batting unit squandered another chance to hit form on a placid track, with shot-selection that will leave John Wright fuming. Martin Guptill flicked to midwicket after impressing early on, Jamie How pulled imperiously but straight to deep square leg, Ross Taylor’s expansive drive ended in first slip’s hands, and Kane Williamson chipped the ball to long-on.The home side had tumbled to 79 for 5 before Brendon McCullum jumpstarted the innings with a typically energetic cameo. James Franklin then led the rescue with his third half-century in four innings; after a watchful start, he cut loose in the Powerplay reeling off four boundaries in two overs. Afridi handcuffed him with a legstump line in the 44th over and had him holing out to deep fine leg.The batting recovery was completed by Nathan McCullum, who blasted his way to his maiden one-day half-century. The highlights of his innings were a couple of high-risk paddles for four against the quicks and a murderous carve over cover for six in the penultimate over.Franklin and the McCullum brothers helped New Zealand put on 170 in the second half of the innings despite the top-order collapse, but even that proved insufficient as Misbah continued his prolific tour.

Bangladesh search for elusive victory

Bangladesh are still searching for their first win against England after coming mighty close in Mirpur

Big Picture

Until Eoin Morgan produced a display of brilliant hitting Bangladesh sensed their chance to notch a maiden victory against England in Mirpur but the wait goes on. Morgan’s display also secured the series for England however, the visitors have been far from convincing and the gap between the sides is narrowing as quickly as the UK opinion polls.Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, didn’t hide his disappointment at a couple of umpiring decisions that didn’t go his team’s way – notably an lbw appeal against Morgan when he had 7 – but he has also been criticised in some quarters for his decision to recall paceman Shafiul Islam for the death overs. That, though, is harsh on Shakib who is moulding a young team in very promising fashion.A consolation victory is now all they can aim for in Chittagong, the coastal town a six-hour train journey from Dhaka (or supposedly a 50-minute flight, but England were delayed six hours), although Bangladesh have certainly laid down a marker to England. The visitors will be desperate for a performance of real authority ahead of the Test series, but they have a few issues not least in the pace-bowling department which has been hit by injuries. The quicks have struggled to make much of an impression in the series – Tim Bresnan has been the pick – with the onus on Graeme Swann to control the innings. However, they are learning valuable lessons ahead of the World Cup in a year’s time, especially as they are grouped with Bangladesh and will play them in Chittagong. Already one lesson is abundantly clear – you can no longer take the home side lightly.

Watch out for…

Surely Kevin Pietersen has got to start scoring significant runs again soon. Hasn’t he? It was all looking so good against Pakistan in Dubai, but since arriving in Bangladesh he has struggled to lay bat on ball. He was shot out for 0 and 6 in the warm-ups, made 1 in the first ODI and was removed for 18 on Tuesday. That dismissal, to Abdur Razzaq, highlighted a long-running problem Pietersen has against left-arm spinners and he was completely squared up by a hint of turn. Eventually his game will click and a bowling attack will pay. Maybe in Chittagong?Abdur Razzaq had gone 45 overs without an international wicket when he claimed Pietersen and with one under his belt the confidence came soaring back. He troubled the England middle order with his flight and a hint of turn, also trapping Paul Collingwood lbw before removing Matt Prior to spark the late wobble. He forms a potent combination alongside his captain, Shakib, and if there is any assistance in the pitch he’ll be a handful again.

Team news

Bangladesh produced a much more consistent batting effort in the second match to reach 260 for 6 – their highest score against England – and only Aftab Ahmed’s position is probably under threat after two failures. It’s the pace bowlers which are a problem, although Shafiul touched 90mph during his first over before getting rough treatment at the end. However, paceman Nazmul Hossain has been added to the squad as another option.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Aftab Ahmed, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Naeem Islam, 8 Suhrawadi Shuvo, 9 Abdur Razzaq, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel HossainRyan Sidebottom has been ruled out for the rest of the tour and Stuart Broad is out of the final one-dayer with a back injury, so Ajmal Shahzad could make his ODI debut having played the second Twenty20 against Pakistan in Dubai. Craig Kieswetter has made a stuttering start to his career, but needs to be given a run in the side.England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Craig Kieswetter, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Tredwell, 11 Ajmal Shahzad

Pitch and conditions

This is the first day game of the series so the dew factor, which hindered Bangladesh a little in Mirpur, won’t be a factor in this match. It has a history of turning in Chittagong which would suit the home side and their clutch of spinners. However, being a day game means no let-up from the heat although being on the coast will help.

Stats and Trivia

  • England’s only other ODI in Chittagong was played at the MA Aziz Stadium in 2003 when the visitors won by seven wickets to secure a 3-0 series win.
  • England’s two-wicket win in Mirpur was their third-highest successful chase on the subcontinent, being their 306 for 5 against Pakistan at Karachi and 276 for 7 against West Indies at Ahmedabad.

Quotes

“I thought 260 gave us a good chance if we took our catches, which we didn’t, and if decisions had gone our way, which they didn’t. England would have been in a whole heap of trouble if Morgan had been given out.”

“Whatever position I’m in, I enjoy the challenge of being in the game, and batting at No. 6 you go in at crucial times. Those positions can sometimes be the main places for getting a team over the line or not, so you take on the challenge and embrace it.”

Lions hope to retain Viljoen

The Lions franchise are hopeful of holding on to fast bowler Hardus Viljoen, who has been in discussion with New Zealand side, Central Districts, and could consider moving to the country to continue his career.”We are aware that he has been talking to the Stags but we are in the process of firming up his contract for next season. As things stand now, we believe he will commit to us,” Greg Fredericks, Lions CEO, told ESPNcricinfo.Former international Fanie de Villiers is facilitating the talks between Viljoen and Central Districts, whose head coach Heinrich Malan played in South Africa. De Villiers told newspaper that he believed Viljoen will have better opportunities in New Zealand.”Patriotism is out the door,” de Villiers said. “He’s been the leading wicket-taker over the last few seasons, but he hasn’t played for South Africa because of the dynamics of the team. Hardus is a very strong and a very good fast bowler who can bowl at 150kmph and he will be sought after in New Zealand and Australia.”Viljoen was second on the Sunfoil Series bowling charts last season, with 39 wickets at 20.43. He was sixth the season before that (2013-14), with 33 wickets at 30.51 and eighth in the 2012-13 summer with 31 wickets at 21.51.He has made his name with both pace and aggression and is one of the leaders of the Lions’ attack. He has also caught the eye of the national selectors – he played for the South Africa A side last winter in two unofficial Tests against Australia A, and has also was in the A squad’s fifty-over group for the last two winter tournaments. It’s not so much the lack of opportunity but the greater earning potential that Viljoen is after. “It’s about what we can offer him,” Fredericks said, while even de Villiers said ensuring proper remuneration was the main motivator for Viljoen seeking the move. He is also eyeing county cricket for the same reason.Lions understand Viljoen’s value and have given an assurance that they will compensate him as well as they can. “We know he is important to us, especially now that we have lost Chris Morris to the Titans and we are negotiating with him,” Fredericks saidShould Viljoen decide the New Zealand Dollar is more appealing than the South African Rand, he will join what is becoming a fairly long list of South African players in the country. Kruger van Wyk, Grant Elliott, and Neil Wagner are among the South African-born players who have made careers in New Zealand. Unlike that trio, Viljoen may not be seeking qualification to represent the country. He is already 26 and would be 31 by 2021, when he would eligible to play for them.

Maharashtra entered the semi-finals for the second year in succession after Anupam Sanklecha’s four-wicket haul, boosting his match-tally to eight, sank Andhra by 75 runs in Lahli.Andhra’s pursuit of 177 was dented by the seam trio of Sanklecha, Domnic Joseph and Shrikant Mundhe dismissing the top-four batsmen for under 60 runs, including the captain Mohammad Kaif. Left-arm seamer Samad Fallah got rid of Ricky Bhui and D Siva Kumar in quick succession and 80 for 6 became 101 all out as Sanklecha wiped out the tail.Andhra’s capitulation on a typically green pitch followed Maharashtra’s acceleration in the morning, where they scored 51 runs in 10.3 overs before being bowled out.Kedar Jadhav departed in the second ball of the day, but Rahul Tripathi, who had retired hurt on Tuesday, smashed 43 off 38 balls, and added 49 runs for the eighth wicket with Sanklecha to stretch Maharashtra’s total to 223. Siva Kumar, the leading wicket-taker in the season so far, picked up six wickets and finished with 12 in the match.
