Petersen injures ankle in warm-up

Cursed by rain and cold since the day he arrived in Essex, the South Africa batsman Alviro Petersen described scoring runs as a “bit tough”

One has to feel sympathy for Alviro Petersen, Essex’s overseas signing from Johannesburg. From the heat of the highveld he has been plunged into the soaking cold bath that is Championship cricket in April and now May. He summed up his situation with as much understatement he could muster when he reckoned it was a “bit tough” scoring runs.Rain allowed only 10 balls to be bowled on the second day as Kent staggered onwards from their overnight 17 for 5, though Petersen did not join the fun in his customary position at slip. He remained in the pavilion after twisting his ankle playing warm-up football, allowing plenty of time to contemplate batting in due course. His injury was shrugged off as mild, though Ashley Young has gone to turf for less at Manchester United.Even in such a brief passage of play, Kent could have slipped further, as Geraint Jones padded up to the opening delivery from Charl Willoughby and was hit plumb in front by a sharp inswinger. Luckily for him the ball would have missed, just high. A maiden followed from David Masters, and Kent had stopped the rot for the time being.Petersen, as a Test cricketer, has stuck to his task well with Essex, and his 145 at Cardiff last week was a mature effort. He has not yet succeeded at Chelmsford, but these are early days in his attempt to claw back South African credibility at Essex after Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s embarrassing tenure as a bowler last summer.Tsotsobe started his Essex contract in the April heatwave of blessed memory and flew back home after taking only five wickets in his three first-class games. His Twitter remark declared his sojourn as the “worst two months” of his life. “It’s just impossible to work in this environment,” he said. The most printable reaction from Essex’s coach Paul Grayson was that the comment was “downright rude”.One wonders what Tsotsobe would have thought of the much harsher environment that Petersen has had to endure – tough, even for football.Rain stayed away for most of a second day lit by sunshine, with the absence of cricket caused by overnight torrents. Kent’s first task is to beat their lowest total against Essex, which was 43 at Southend in 1925. Batting is still tricky and with two sunnier days forecast the match could yet have a positive result.

Kent bring in Brendan Nash

Kent have signed West Indies batsman Brendan Nash as their overseas player for the 2012 season

Kent have signed West Indies batsman Brendan Nash as their overseas player for the 2012 season. Nash, the 34-year-old Australia-born left-hander, played the last of his 21 Tests in June 2011 and is expected to be available for Kent’s entire campaign.Despite dropping out of the West Indies side after a run of modest form – Nash was dismissed for single-digit scores five times in his final six Test innings – he has continued to prosper for Jamaica and has made two double-centuries for them in his last ten first-class innings. He is also seen as a positive, calm and experienced influence on and off the pitch and was previously West Indies vice-captain.He has limited pedigree as a limited-overs player, however. He has never made a List A century – he has only passed 50 four times – and has never batted in T20 cricket. Nash opted not to play in the WICB 50-over competition for Jamaica in the 2011-12 domestic season, citing “personal reasons” and saying his “mind was not where he wanted it to be.”None of this will be any secret to Jimmy Adams, appointed as Kent’s head coach in January. Adams was previously technical director of the Jamaican team and is no stranger to Nash.”Brendan’s ability, coupled with his experience, will be of great value to the club,” Adams said. “I look forward to welcoming Brendan to Kent in the next couple of weeks in preparation for the season opener.”The signing of Nash continues a busy winter for Kent in county cricket’s burgeoning transfer market. While losing Joe Denly to Middlesex and Martin van Jaarsveld to retirement, Kent have signed Charlie Shreck (from Nottinghamshire), Ben Harmison (Durham), Michael Powell (Glamorgan) and Scott Newman, on a two-month loan, from Middlesex. All of them have points to prove having struggled to secure first-team cricket – or, in Nash’s case, international cricket – and in the words of Jamie Clifford, Kent’s chief executive, have “unfinished business” in the game.Several of them will have also offered good value for money. The county game is very much a ‘buyers’ market’ at present, with many players vying for the few positions open at the 18 clubs. Kent have considered a list of 65 players over the winter and, after giving trials and interviews to many, have selected only what they feel are the cream of the crop. They remain on the lookout for a bowler and will decide whether to sign a second overseas player for the FLt20 nearer the time.Edited by Alan Gardner

England will adapt to conditions – Miller

National selector Geoff Miller admitted England are taking a step into the unknown in the new year when they travel to the UAE to face Pakistan.

England’s national selector, Geoff Miller, admitted England will be taking a step into the unknown in January when they travel to UAE to face Pakistan. England have never played at Test match in the Middle East and begin a three-match series on January 17.Pakistan can call on recent local knowledge having made UAE their second-home after being exiled from playing on home soil following the terrorist attacks of March 2009 when the Sri Lankan team bus was shot at travelling to a Test match in Lahore. They first played in UAE in 2002 and since their return to the region in 2010 have drawn 0-0 with South Africa before beating Sri Lanka 1-0 in October. England have only appeared in limited-overs matches, most recently drawing a Twenty20 series 1-1 in February 2010.”It’s something different for us,” Miller told . “Pakistan, who are playing very good cricket at the moment, are used to playing in the region,” he said. “We’ll do our preparation as we always do. We’ve watched cricket over there and there are a couple of matches before we go into the Test matches but [the players] can adapt, they’re good enough to adapt to all conditions and all surfaces.”Under team director Andy Flower and captain Andrew Strauss England’s preparation for Test series has been meticulous. They played three first-class matches ahead of the last Ashes series in Australia whereas India had one match before their four-Test series in England earlier this year and none before an earlier tour of South Africa.”Whatever the opposition you’ve still got to get used to the pitches and the conditions and that’s exactly what we’ll do,” said Miller, aware that Pakistan are unbeaten in Test series for 2011. “We’ll get our house in order,” he added. “We need to fly right from the word go.”England will have to carefully consider the make-up of their bowling attack. They have operated with four specialist bowlers in all but one Test – in Chittagong – since the 2009 Ashes series when Andrew Flintoff retired. Monty Panesar has been included in the squad if England require two spinners and Miller is confident there is the strength in depth to consolidate their position as the no. 1 Test side in the world.”The options are there for the two Andy’s to select the side they require. We’ve got variations in our seam attack for the different kind of bowlers we may need and we’ve got the variations in the spin as well,” said Miller. “We’ll wait and see what the surfaces are like. [Flower and Strauss] are pretty good judges of how wickets are going to play so we’ll just have to see how the pitches play in the warm up games and select accordingly.”

Geoff Marsh in talks about Sri Lanka coaching role

Geoff Marsh, the former Australia batsman and coach, has confirmed discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket about the possibility of becoming national coach

Geoff Marsh, the former Australia batsman and coach, has confirmed discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket about the possibility of becoming national coach. In Pallekele to witness his son Shaun’s century on Test debut, Marsh has been weighing up the possibility of taking over the position vacated by Trevor Bayliss following the 2011 World Cup. Sri Lanka has since been under interim coaches, first Bayliss’ assistant Stuart Law in England and then the former Sri Lanka fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake in this series against AustraliaGraham Ford, the former South Africa coach, was also sounded out about the role but reportedly declined. Marsh said that his former Australia team-mate Tom Moody, who coached Sri Lanka before Bayliss, had also been engaged in discussions.”They had a word but nothing’s come of it. I’m here totally focused on the Test match, but they’ve had a word to quite a few people,” Marsh said.”Definitely nothing formal, no. I may consider it but we’ll just see how things go. You’ve got the IPL and all that to take into consideration, a lot of things, there’s my job back at home. So they’ve spoken to Tom Moody and a whole heap of people, so we’ll see how that all pans out.”Marsh played 50 Tests for Australia and then coached the national team for four years. He also worked as the coach of Zimbabwe and is presently with the IPL franchise Pune Warriors. The Sri Lankans have not won in nine Tests since the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan. They appear in need of a strong hand in the backroom to deliver stability and direction to a team that is in transition following the loss of Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas. The batsmen in particular failed to give a worthy account of themselves against Australia, rolled for 105 and 174 in two first innings in Galle and Pallekele.

Leeds: Source drops big Kalvin Phillips twist

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will quit the club this summer, even if the Whites stay in the Premier League, with Aston Villa keen on his services, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Phillips interest

Phillips has become a man in demand since the turn of the year, with Villa, Newcastle, West Ham and Manchester United all showing an interest in his services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-43/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 26-year-old is currently in the process of changing agents and was reportedly keen on extending his stay in Yorkshire.

However, that now looks to have changed in a worrying twist for the Elland Road faithful, with the Whites in real danger of being relegated back to the Championship in the next nine days.

The Latest: Source shares twist

FI shared a major update regarding Phillips on Thursday, claiming he is now planning to quit even if Jesse Marsch’s side remain in the top flight.

A Villa source informed the site that they are readying an offer for the England international and have been given encouragement over a transfer, with Leeds valuing the midfielder at £60m, which could see him become Villa’s most expensive signing.

The Verdict: Not good

It did appear at one point that there was a real chance Phillips would pen a new deal at Elland Road this summer, but it now seems as if an exit is inevitable.

Star attacker Raphinha also looks set to depart for Barcelona, so Leeds now look set to be without their two most valuable assets ahead of Marsch’s first full season in charge.

The Brazilian has a €25m relegation release clause, while you’d expect that Phillips’ current £60m valuation could also fall considerably, should the Whites drop back down to the Championship.

In other news: Leeds and Orta now planning for the Championship as contact made to sign £5k-p/w flop – opinion.

Hong Kong take title

A round-up of action from the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jan-2011Mark Chapman’s half-century powered Hong Kong to a four-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in the final of the ICC World Cricket League Division Three, at the Kowloon Cricket Club. The 16-year-old Chapman’s unbeaten 70 anchored Hong Kong’s chase after their bowlers, led by Najeeb Amar, restricted PNG to 202 for 9.PNG chose to bat and got off to a steady start with their openers Tony Ura and Jack Vare putting on 77 runs in just under 21 overs. Amar picked up the first of his three wickets when he dismissed Ura for 51. Asad Vala was run out in the next over but Vare and Chris Amini batted solidly for a half-century stand to take PNG to 133 for 2. Aizaz Khan picked up Vare for 48 and the dismissal, in the 37th over, triggered a collapse. Nizakat Khan dismissed Kila Pala and Christopher Kent in the 38th over, and the slide continued as PNG lost seven wickets for 69 runs. Amini fell on the penultimate ball of the innings as PNG just managed to nudge past 200.PNG needed a strong reply from their bowlers if they were to have any chances of defending their total. Hitolo Areni provided the first breakthrough when he had Courtney Kruger lbw in the sixth over. Roy Lamsam and Hussain Butt, who made a half-century when Hong Kong beat PNG in their final league game, batted solidly but Rarva Dikana struck to dismiss both of them in quick succession as Hong Kong looked in trouble at 60 for 3. However, Chapman played a determined knock, stringing together useful partnerships with Irfan Ahmed, Nizakat and Waqas Barkat, to wrest the advantage in Hong Kong’s favour. Najeeb hit some big shots as his unbeaten 37-run partnership with Chapman carried Hong Kong home. Chapman was declared the Man of the Match.”Today I feel like I’m flying, like I am sat on the moon,” said a delighted Najeeb Amar. “I am so happy that we’ve won the tournament. I was delighted to score the winning the runs with Mark Chapman in front of our home crowd. Credit must not just go to the team but also our coach, Charlie Burke. He’s unbelievable, he made my job easier, he gave us a simple task: don’t panic and the results will come, which they did this week.”Our team is full of surprises and talented guys, especially Mark Chapman among many others, they can prove themselves against any team and hopefully when we get to Dubai we can do the same. The teams in Division Two will be a tough task, but the way we perform and play and we can make it any level and we’re confident.””It’s an amazing feeling to win in front of my family and home crowd and then take home the man of the match medal too,” Chapman said. “I worked hard today to grind out the runs since I’ve not had a great run this tournament. I don’t know much about Dubai and the sides we’ll face, but I’m sure we’ll be ready.”PNG head coach, Andy Bichel, was obviously disappointed about not taking home the trophy but drew positives from the tournament and the side’s promotion to Division Two. “It’s disappointing to lose in the final, but the plan was to win promotion to Division Two which we have done,” he said. “We’re a young squad and hopefully this experience will inspire them to play better in Dubai.”We haven’t looked forward to Division Two yet, but it’s about being prepared to play at that one level up. Its about having plans for batsmen who will be of a higher standard, being in different conditions with different pitches. The higher standard you go, the better the wickets will get, the better the teams are and it will be a real test for us – we’ve got the players to do well, its now about preparing for the event.”

An unbeaten century by Adnan Ilyas led Oman to third place, as they beat Italy by eight wickets at the Hong Kong Cricket Club. Ilyas scored 120 off 105 balls, and put together a 198-run partnership with Vaibhav Wategaonkar, who scored 87 not out, as Oman chased down Italy’s 251 in just 41 overs. Italy had reached their score on the back of a quick 78 by wicketkeeper Hayden Patrizi and a measured 81 by captain Alessandro Bonora. The two put together 99 runs for the fifth wicket. Italy ended their innings on a high after smashing 51 runs off the last four overs, but the score proved to be an easy target for Oman.”It’s fantastic to win Player of the Tournament, but is somewhat bittersweet as we’ve not managed to win promotion this week,” said Peter Petricola. “I wasn’t able to play today as I’ve been suffering some soreness after bowling for the first time in a while for the side, but claiming those 11 wickets and scoring those runs for Italy has been worth it to see us stay in Division Three.”I think this week has shown we have the ability to challenge the sides in Division Three and if things had gone our way we could’ve have made it up a division, but I’m happy we’ve maintained our position.”

USA finished last after Denmark thumped them by 84 runs at the Mission Road Ground. Denmark’s wicketkeeper Freddie Klokker set up the win with an unbeaten century that took his side to 240, seamer Basit Raja then ran through USA’s top order, and some tight fielding from Denmark sealed the win. Three USA batsmen were run out as they crashed to 156 all out in 43 overs. Raja took 3 for 25 and his opening spell helped reduce USA to 48 for 4. They never recovered and were soon 105 for 9. Durale Forrest and Muhammad Ghous added 51 for the last wicket but it was little consolation for USA. They and Denmark will both be relegated to Division 4.USA captain Steve Massiah was reprimanded and warned by the ICC for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct after showing dissent at the umpire’s decision.
