Rob Dorsett drops Villa transfer update

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has dropped an update on Aston Villa’s transfer plans.

What’s the story?

Dean Smith’s side have had an eventful transfer window thus far, making a number of new signings in the shape of Emi Buendia, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey among others, while they’ve also waved goodbye to talisman Jack Grealish, who is now with Premier League champions Manchester City.

It now appears that Smith is happy with the club’s transfer business as we get into deadline day, although an intriguing claim has been made about a possible late swoop.

Writing ahead of deadline day on Twitter, Dorsett said: “#avfc won’t pursue a deal for #lfc midfielder Curtis Jones. Dean Smith happy with the squad he has, but still has money for a midfielder if a decent deal is forthcoming before tomorrow’s deadline. Already seen bids knocked back for Ward-Prowse and Smith Rowe.”

Now or never for NSWE

While NSWE have spearheaded another impressive summer of recruitment following last year’s one which saw the likes of Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins coming in to help Villa to just outside of the top ten, deadline day gives them a superb opportunity to take the club to the next level.

Having seen bids rejected for the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Emile Smith Rowe as Dorsett himself says, clearly Villa wanted a central midfielder, and that really shouldn’t be off the agenda just because we’re heading into the closing stages of the transfer window.

It’s the position which needs the most strengthening, as evidenced by what Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield had to say exclusively to Football FanCast earlier this month.

He said: “Midfield is the one I think Villa need to address, particularly after their start in the Premier League. I think every Villa fan out there really wants to see them sign a defensive midfielder.”

If a deal is “forthcoming” for Villa, then NSWE simply must bring out the cheque-book one final time this summer and splash the cash today.

It would bolster Smith’s options in the middle of the park significantly and ensure that Villa don’t regret missing out on the likes of Ward-Prowse and Smith Rowe earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa must keep this star on transfer deadline day…

Aston Villa: Fans react to Frederic Guilbert exit

Aston Villa right-back Frederic Guilbert sealed a loan move to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on deadline day.

And a number of Villa fans were quick to hit out at the transfer on social media.

Guilbert, who spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign with Strasbourg, has re-joined, this time on a season-long loan.

The 26-year-old scored and provided an assist in his only Villa appearance this season but has now returned to his native country.

Villa’s decision to allow Guilbert to depart late in the window leaves Dean Smith with just one natural right-back option in Matty Cash.

Summer signings Ashley Young and Axel Tuanzebe will be able to cover in that area if required, with Ezri Konsa also having experience of playing as a right-back.

Villa fans react

Villa confirmed Guilbert’s Strasbourg switch on their official Twitter page. This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with one describing it as ‘stupid’.

Laxman ruled out as Mumbai look to remain top

Cricinfo previews Mumbai’s home clash against Hyderabad in Group A of the Ranji Trophy Super League at the Bandra Kurla Complex

Cricket returns to Mumbai on Tuesday, offering the city a chance to take its mind off the tragedy and trauma of the past week with a Ranji Trophy match, deferred from November 29 in the wake of the attacks, between the hosts and Hyderabad. One bit of good news for Mumbai is that Hyderabad’s VVS Laxman, who made a double-century in the previous game, has been ruled out of the match due to a heel injury. The teams go into the match with contrasting results in the previous round: while Hyderabad earned first-innings points against Rajasthan at home, Mumbai were humbled by Saurashtra in Rajkot. They were made to follow on and, though they picked up a point after conceding the first-innings lead, it was a rude wake-up call for Mumbai. That has left Mumbai with plenty to worry about. First, the various opening combinations – two in four games – have failed to provide a solid platform. Also a concern is the inability of their pace bowlers to swerve the ball in the air – something Balkrishna Jadeja of Saurashtra, who took six wickets in the match, profited from. The first response from Mumbai, who lead Group A with 15 points, is to replace Sahil Kukreja at the top with the Vinayak Mane.Wasim Jaffer, the Mumbai captain, said it was a clear signal to his team about improving their performance. “Sahil has been struggling in the last few games and we have failed to get a good opening partnership,” Jaffer said.Mane’s inclusion, however, can still prove to be a gamble – the veteran opener last played in the 2007 Nissar Trophy while his previous Ranji innings came two years back. A budding opener then, he was unfortunate to suffer a serious shoulder injury after a fall. However, Jaffer didn’t appear to be shying from experiments. “We want to try out a few things before the knockout stage,” he said.Ajit Agarkar returns to the squad in place of Murtuza Hussain while Rohit Sharma will replace Hiken Shah in the middle order. Agarkar sat sit out the Saurashtra game with a viral fever while Sharma was involved in the England ODI series.Agarkar’s return could prove crucial in the seamer-friendly conditions at the MCA Bandra Kurla ground, which will host its debut first-class match. With relatively open surroundings and cloudy weather, bowlers are expected to get significant movement in the air. Understandably, both teams are likely to play at least three seamers.Agarkar will share the new ball with Dhaval Kulkarni, as Usman Malvi fills the slot for the third seamer. The veteran pair of Ramesh Powar and Sairaj Bahutule is likely to complete the five-man bowling attack for the hosts.Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan won’t be playing this game but Jaffer said the pair could be included in future games. “We are in a good position now but if we need them in a tight situation I will call and speak to them.”MP Arjun, SM Shoaib and Ashwin Yadav are the front-runners for Hyderabad in the fast-bowling attack. But Jadeja’s success against Mumbai in Rajkot might tempt them to include Abdul Khader, the left-arm medium pacer. Pragyan Ojha’s shoulder injury while fielding in the Cuttack ODI against England will allow Lalit Mohan to be the lone specialist spinner for the visitors. The biggest loss for Hyderabad, currently fourth on the points table, will be Laxman’s absence after he failed to recover from the heel injury picked up during his double century last week. The injury forced him to use a runner during the last hour of his innings. “The injury was aggravated against Rajasthan and the physio said it would take at least a couple of weeks to heal,” Kanwaljeet Singh, the Hyderabad coach, said. However, Kanwaljit remained positive despite losing two national team players. “We don’t go by names. We are positive,” he said.In the four games so far Hyderabad have managed to fetch points on the basis of first-innings lead in three games – Delhi, Orissa and Rajasthan. Jaffer acknowledged the strength of his opponents, who he believed, had been consistent despite the absence of Laxman and Ojha in the previous games.”They have showed they are not reliant on the big name players. We need to play the way we played in our first three games,” he said.Teams:

Spurs ‘have been in talks’ for Milenkovic

According to a report by Turkish transfer journalist Ekrem Konur, Tottenham Hotspur – and by extension managing director Fabio Paratici – ‘will try’ to sign Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic on one condition.

The Lowdown: Spurs enter Milenkovic negotiations…

As per other reliable sources, like Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Spurs have recently entered talks to sign Milenkovic following the breakdown of his proposed move to West Ham.

The Serbian colossus was thought to be on the verge of a move to the London Stadium, with some even believing that his suitcases were packed, but Sky Sports claimed that Paratici is attempting a last minute smash-and-grab.

The Latest: Spurs ‘will try’ to sign Milenkovic, on one condition…

According to Konur, while talks for Milenkovic have been held, Spurs will only attempt to complete his transfer on one condition.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The journalist claims that Spurs will properly move for the 23-year-old if they fail to prise fellow Serie A defender Takehiro Tomiyasu away from Bologna.

“Tottenham will try to complete the Milenkovic transfer if Tomiyasu fails to complete the transfer,” Konur said on Twitter.

“Tottenham have been in talks with Fiorentina about Milenkovic.”

The Verdict: Milenkovic the better option…

Both possessing similar profiles, we believe La Viola’s towering young defender slightly edges it over Tomiyasu in terms of who Spurs should be targeting for the centre-back position.

Journalist Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic believes that Milenkovic could leave Fiorentina for as little as €15 million (£12.7m) this summer and, depending on his possible Premier League performances, he may come with a bit of sell-on value.

The 23-year-old, standing at a colossal 6 foot 4, is arguably tailor-made for the English top flight and Spurs would be snapping up a real bargain, especially considering that he has been called ‘extraordinary’ by Spanish right-back Pol Lirola.

Fabrizio Romano: Everton not progressing with Dumfries

When Rafa Benitez was announced as Everton manager it was soon revealed that he’d be given a healthy transfer kitty in the ongoing window.

However, that seemingly couldn’t be further from the truth with the Toffees prioritising cost-effective measures instead.

What’s the word?

As a result, Everton are struggling to complete even the most basic of transfers.

They have secured three moves already but the net spend on those deals fails to surpass the £1.7m they paid for Demarai Gray.

In any ordinary window for the Merseyside club, they’d have probably wrapped up a deal for Denzel Dumfries already given how cheap he is.

The flying Dutch wing-back has been linked with the Toffees ever since his exploits at Euro 2020 but Inter Milan have stolen a march in the race to acquire his services.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano who delivered the following update on Dumfries’ future to his Twitter followers:

“Inter are pushing to sign Denzel Dumfries from PSV. Talks opened for €12m bid – PSV want more as price tag, Everton are not progressing in negotiations for Dumfries since days.”

Worrying news

The final passage of Romano’s tweet should come as a particular concern to the adoring Goodison Park crowd.

With Seamus Coleman’s contract expiring in a year’s time, they will need a right-back primed and ready to take his place in the squad.

Crucially, that player will also need to be first-team ready and proven at some of the highest levels in the game.

Dumfries is that man and at the price tag mooted, it’s almost bewildering that talks haven’t progressed.

Marcel Brands sought a loan move earlier this week but that clearly hasn’t come to fruition despite his value sitting at a measly £15m.

Therefore, not being able to stump up the cash for a player so cheap will leave supporters fuming.

After all, when you consider the vast sums of money they’ve spent in recent years, this is a mere snip.

The Toffees have spent poorly on players like Alex Iwobi who cost around £34m, Jean-Philippe Gbamin for £25m and Davy Klaassen for £23.6m.

Consequently, not having the cash reserves in order to be able to sign Dumfries is peculiar.

At a price below £20m, he’d have been an exceptional signing. He scored twice for his country at the recent European Championships and has shown himself to have every trait associated with a modern full-back.

Everton supporters should be aghast that a transfer can’t be completed.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to new home kit

Crystal Palace unveiled their new home kit on Tuesday evening, which naturally received plenty of interaction on social media from numerous Eagles supporters.

Palace had already released their away and third strips and shared their traditional red and blue kit 11 days before the new season gets underway.

The Eagles had a helping hand from the club’s ‘oldest fan ever’, Nan Pam, who modelled the shirt in a video with a number of Palace players.

The kit, available to view here, has diagonal red and blue stripes across the front with a red sleeve and a blue collar.

You’d expect that the first time Palace will wear their new home attire competitively would be in Patrick Vieira’s first game in charge at Selhurst Park against Brentford on August 21, as they are away to Chelsea in their season opener.

Palace fans react

The club shared a clip of the new kit on their official Twitter page. The response was largely positive from fans, with one labelling it as ‘epic’.

Celtic: Odsonne Edouard update emerges

Brighton are not interested in signing Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, despite reports suggesting they have tabled an offer for the Frenchman, The Argus report.

The Lowdown: Reported Brighton bid

Journalist Rudy Galetti posted on Twitter on Friday morning, claiming Brighton have made an offer in the region of €25m (£21.4m) for the 23-year-old.

Talks were thought to be ongoing between the two clubs, with Galetti, who described the situation as ‘evolving’, believing €25m could be enough to close a deal.

Edouard, who nearly joined Leicester City earlier this summer, still wants to leave Parkhead, but it seems as if links of a move to Brighton may not be accurate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-10/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Source shares update

According to The Argus, this is the fourth successive window where Brighton have been linked with Edouard.

However, a well-placed source informed them that ‘reports that keep emerging are completely false’ – an interesting seven-word update.

The Argus mentioned the links regarding an initial bid, presumably from Galetti, but it doesn’t seem as if there is anything in them.

The Verdict: Hoops still need to sell

With Edouard, on £19,500-a-week, still looking for a Celtic Park exit, the Hoops could do with cashing in this summer.

He has less than 12 months on his Hoops contract, and should Celtic fail to move him on this summer, they’ll be left with a forward who seemingly doesn’t want to be there who could then discuss a pre-contract agreement in January.

Unfortunately, the £21.4m bid from Brighton doesn’t appear to be true, but if Celtic could get a fee close to Edouard’s £15.3m Transfermarkt valuation, it could still turn out to be good business.

In other news: Bid made: Celtic move for the 13th quickest player on FIFA 21.

Crystal Palace eye up Reiss Nelson move

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson this summer, along with a number of other Premier League clubs.

The Lowdown: Vieira looks for new additions

Patrick Vieira is looking to work his magic in the Selhurst Park hot-seat, having taken over from the departed Roy Hodgson earlier this month.

Palace’s squad could do with some freshening up in the coming weeks, as they look to enjoy a vibrant period under their new manager, and business has already started with the capture of Michael Olise and the links to Marc Guehi.

The Latest: Palace linked with Nelson move

According to CBS Sports, the Eagles are also keen on signing Nelson from Arsenal, with the 21-year-old potentially moving on this summer.

Brentford and Brighton are also mentioned as potential suitors, however, and the youngster’s current Gunners deal expires in 2023.

While there has been talk of Nelson extending his stay at Arsenal, the report states that there is ‘no imminent sign’ of that happening.

The Verdict: Exciting potential signing

Nelson is a hugely exciting young player who has already enjoyed great experience at a high level, scoring and assisting four times apiece in 47 appearances for the Gunners.

Regular football elsewhere could do him the world of good – he thrived while on loan in Germany scoring an incredible seven times in just five starts for Hoffenheim – and Palace could possibly offer him just that, with more quality required in attacking areas even despite the acquisition of Olise.

Mikel Arteta has hailed Nelson as a ‘special player’, highlighting his pedigree, and he would be worth taking a punt on, given his long-term potential.

Liverpool fans excited as Salah returns

A number of Liverpool supporters have been left excited by an official club post showing Mohamed Salah returning to pre-season training.

Euro 2020 has taken centre stage over the past month, but it’s time for the focus to return to the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s men are back in pre-season training on Monday as they prepare to try and wrestle back the Premier League title from Manchester City.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The 2020/21 campaign was a draining one at Anfield, with injuries and the absence of fans for most of the season taking its toll, but the hope is that Liverpool return to their best this time around.

Someone who will clearly be key to the Reds’ chances is Salah, who was comfortably their Player of the Year last season, scoring 31 goals.

On Sunday, the club’s official Twitter account posted a photo of the 29-year-old back in the fold as he looks to wreak yet more havoc as he enters his fifth season as a Liverpool player.

Whelan values NUFC target Carter-Vickers

Newcastle United could ‘probably’ persuade Tottenham Hotspur to part with Cameron Carter-Vickers for ‘even less’ than £5m.

That’s according to former Leeds United, Coventry City and Middlesbrough striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

The outlet reported last week that Newcastle had moved ahead of Scottish giants Celtic in the race to sign the defender. The Magpies apparently want to sign a centre-back this summer, and the ‘young and affordable’ Carter-Vickers fits their criteria.

Carter-Vickers spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Bournemouth, his sixth temporary spell away from Spurs after previous stints at Luton Town, Stoke City, Swansea City, Ipswich Town and Sheffield United (via Transfermarkt).

The American defender started 23 Championship matches last term, averaging 2.8 successful aerial duels, one tackle, 1.1 interceptions and 3.6 clearances per match for the Cherries (via WhoScored).

Spurs have exercised their right to extend Carter-Vickers’ contract by a further 12 months (via Football London), but that seemed to be motivated by ensuring that it didn’t run out this summer and leave him open to departing for free.

The latest

Whelan believes that it makes a great deal of sense for Spurs to cash in on the 23-year-old, so long as they recoup their investment. He told Football Insider:

“He’s not going to make the grade in the Premier League with Tottenham but he’ll also be on big wages.

“It makes sense to try and get a player out of the club permanently, no matter what that is. Get him off the wage bill and recoup what they’ve already paid.

“£5million would probably do that I would have thought, possibly even less. Then Tottenham would have freed up some wages in a position where they can strengthen as well.”

The verdict

Carter-Vickers represents a decent alternative to fellow Magpies defensive target Kristoffer Ajer. Newcastle have been ‘heavily linked’ with the Celtic man having watched him since 2019, but they may have fallen behind other clubs in the race for his signature (via Chronicle Live).

If Newcastle’s transfer budget is as low as has been reported, striking a deal for Carter-Vickers for the kind of price Whelan mentions could be regarded as pretty sensible, although Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo – another name mentioned in connection with the Magpies – could be a viable alternative.
