'If I could go back and change what happened, I would' – Joe Clarke

Batsman’s involvement in sordid WhatsApp group was revealed during Alex Hepburn trial

Joe Clarke was used to being in the spotlight. Since his debut for Worcestershire at the age of 18 in 2015, his story had encompassed only success and the promise of more. This time it was different. This time the headlines were not about Joe Clarke the England batsman in waiting, as they had tended to be during his rapid rise as the golden boy of New Road. They were about Clarke as a central figure in a grubby tale of sexist, misogynistic behaviour that many had imagined to belong to distant, less enlightened times, and which had profound consequences for one of those involved.Sitting in an office overlooking his new home ground at Trent Bridge, Clarke confides that the dark shadow cast by the episode is still there. “If I could go back and change what happened, I would,” he said. “For all the parties involved. That thought runs through my mind every day.”He is referring to the shocking consequences of a night out in Worcester almost three years ago that were thrust brutally into the public domain in January of last year, when his former Worcestershire team-mate, Alex Hepburn, now serving a prison sentence, stood trial on a charge that he had raped a woman in an apartment in the city centre. Clarke, who had gone to the bathroom to be sick and subsequently passed out there while the alleged offence was taking place, having previously had consensual sex with the same woman, appeared in court as a key witness. The trial concluded with the jury failing to reach a verdict but a retrial was scheduled for April, when Hepburn would be found guilty and sentenced to five years in custody. In the meantime, the emergence in the first trial of sordid messages exchanged between Hepburn, Clarke and another former New Road colleague, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, via WhatsApp, had led to Clarke and Kohler-Cadmore being withdrawn from an England Lions squad preparing to go to India, pending likely disciplinary action.By the time of the retrial, Clarke was two weeks into his debut season for Nottinghamshire, to whom he had moved at the end of the 2018 season. He did not need to miss any cricket in order to appear but when Hepburn’s guilty verdict was announced on April 12, Nottinghamshire were playing Somerset at Trent Bridge. At the end of the match, in which Clarke scored just two runs in each innings after making 112 and 97 not out on his Championship debut for the county the week before, Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores was reluctant to be drawn into discussing Clarke’s state of mind but admitted he had found it difficult to concentrate. His new employers hoped it would be a short-term distraction but it proved not to be the case. Clarke had been signed as one of the hottest young prospects around, a batsman who by 22 years old had scored more first-class hundreds than any English batsman at the equivalent age in the modern era apart from Alastair Cook. Yet his form for the remainder of the season, apart from an unexpected flourish in the final round of the Championship, betrayed only fleeting glimpses of the player Nottinghamshire thought they had signed.Subsequently, Clarke and Kohler-Cadmore were charged with bringing cricket into disrepute over their part in the unsavoury WhatsApp group and the crude game of sexual conquests it revealed. They were ultimately fined £2,000 each and banned for four matches, the suspension deemed to have already been served by the matches they missed by being dropped from the Lions tour. The punishment imposed by the ECB struck some as rather light, although it has to be remembered that however deplorable their behaviour might have been, neither Clarke nor Kohler-Cadmore had committed a criminal offence. There were punishments of another kind, though. Self-inflicted, psychological ones for which neither player seeks sympathy, but real nonetheless.ALSO READ: Kohler-Cadmore’s ‘U-turn’ deserves credit, but wider questions remain”It was difficult last season to go out there and focus on my game,” Clarke said. “It was the first time in my career that I’d walked out to the middle with something in my mind other than my batting.”Lots of players have things going on in their personal lives but after the court case mine were in the public domain, for everyone to see. I couldn’t leave them behind. I might try to but, in the early weeks of the season at least, I’d hear things said, sometimes in the crowd, sometimes by opposition players. Then it was at the front of my mind again.”Looking back now, the way I am now, I don’t think it would affect me as much as it did. But at the time it was very raw. There were so many emotions going through my mind.”Clarke struggled for form after a bright start to the Championship season•Getty Images

Some related to the damage done to how he was portrayed. “I had previously been associated only with positive things,” he said. “I’d been on four Lions tours in a career of only five or six years. If there was a story about Joe Clarke, it was about being one of the batters with a chance of playing for England. All positive.”I’d wanted to be seen here as Joe Clarke, the successful Nottinghamshire batsman. I felt all that was being taken away from me because now I had this other tag, and it stayed with me all season.”As soon as the extent of Clarke’s involvement in the WhatsApp group and the behaviour linked to it became apparent, Nottinghamshire made it clear to him that there was a level of conduct of which they expected none of their players to fall below.Yet, as with Alex Hales after the drug test failures that saw him cast out by England in a World Cup year, they wanted to help their player find a path forward and arranged for him to see a psychologist, which Clarke says helped him.Nonetheless, as match followed match with no sustainable improvement in his form, the county’s patience wore thin. Eventually he was dropped, from the Vitality Blast quarter-final against Middlesex and the subsequent Championship fixture. “It was the first time I had been dropped in my career and it was a hard thing to hear,” Clarke said.Inevitably, too, there were feelings of regret, even remorse about what he had allowed himself to become involved with.”It was a long time ago and it feels now like I was young and naive and probably immature in a way,” he said. “At the time, it felt like it was just three mates talking in a private chat but seeing it in the light that I see it now…”You look back and of course I regret it. Obviously I do. If I could take back everything that happened, in terms of the whole situation for all the parties involved, then I would. It runs through my mind every day.”But I am a lot older now. People might have judged me for what happened but I’ve learned a hell of a lot from my experiences and I think I’m going to be better for it. I’ve made some changes in my own way of life and in the way I train.”There is clearly regret, too, that he was not able to deliver the performances for Nottinghamshire that were expected of him in a season that ended in the most ignominious of relegations, without a single win to their name. “I was a new player with big expectations on me,” he said. “I wanted to be someone who was consistently performing and that did not happen.”If there was a benefit to be obtained from being dropped it was the chance for he and Moores to have one-to-one conversations purely about his cricket. As he grappled with his psychological problems, Clarke had neglected his technique but Moores was able to identify issues that were making him vulnerable.”We looked at some clips of Marnus Labuschagne,” Clarke said. “We thought that this was a batsman with similar movements and a similar game to mine. I came in on a day off and did some work, went back into the team for the last home game of the season and scored two hundreds.”It still was not enough to provide even a late-season glint of brightness in Nottinghamshire’s Championship season. Already relegated during the round that Clarke missed, they piled up a season-high 498 in the first innings but still managed to lose against opponents Warwickshire by eight wickets.A draw against Surrey in the final round completed a full summer without a Championship win in a campaign in which the travails of the team did little to improve Clarke’s state of mind. His own struggle for form was mirrored by several others, fellow new signings Ben Duckett and Ben Slater among them.”The dressing room was a tough place to be in terms with how we dealt with being relegated,” he said. “There were some very upset people, about individual form and the way our team had performed. The way we were relegated, in a year where only one team went down after we’d started among the favourites to win the title, was a really hard pill to swallow.”A winter of reflection, plus more new faces, has yielded renewed optimism. Clarke, confidence buoyed by those runs against Warwickshire and the bonus of a contract with Manchester Originals he knew nothing about until a congratulatory text arrived from a friend, is trying to see this year as his real debut season for Nottinghamshire and the last one as a false start. Kohler-Cadmore’s recall to the Lions squad is further encouragement.Tom Kohler-Cadmore is back in the England Lions squad in Australia•Getty Images

“I loved my time at Worcestershire but coming here seemed like the right next step and it was such a shame when there was so much expectation on me last year that I couldn’t perform the way I wanted,” he said.”I’ve not heard from anyone in the England set-up but I was led to believe that after the [disciplinary] hearing the selection criteria would be the same for me as anyone else. If I can score some runs and help Notts go straight back up we’ll see where it leads.”I can’t change what has been done, much as I’d like to. The only thing I can control is the future so I want to look forward now, rather than back.”All I can do is work as hard as I can and put in consistent performances for Nottinghamshire. If I’m doing that then I’m sure I’m knocking on the right door.”

Chelsea were bled dry by Conte flop who earned 3x more than Gallagher

It's been another dreadful season of Premier League football for Chelsea this year; of that, there can be no doubt.

Mauricio Pochettino's side looked like they might've turned a corner after their dramatic win over Manchester United on Thursday night, but the draw with Sheffield United on Sunday stopped any talk of a turnaround.

There hasn't been much to cheer about for the fans this season, although the solidifying of Conor Gallagher's place in the team has at least given them something to cling to.

The talented midfielder has become one of the squad's most important members, so it's surprising to learn that he is earning three times less than a former flop used to.

Conor Gallagher's salary at Chelsea

Gallagher, a lifelong Blues fan, joined the club as a young boy, fought his way through the various youth sides and went out on loan a few times before finally getting his chance in the first team under Thomas Tuchel last season.

CB – Thiago Silva

CB – Kalidou Koulibaly

LB – Marc Cucurella

CM – Jorginho

CM – Conor Gallagher

RM – Ruben Loftus-Cheek

LM – Mason Mount

ST – Kai Havertz

ST – Raheem Sterling

It wasn't the best of debuts, and his return of just three goals and one assist in 45 appearances was far from remarkable either, but come the final day of the season, he had established himself in the squad.

That said, at several points last summer, it genuinely looked as if he was going to be sold, be that to West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur, but with how well he has played this season, Todd Boehly and Co must be thanking their lucky stars that a transfer never materialised.

In his 41 appearances thus far, the 24-year-old has dramatically increased his output, scoring five goals, providing eight assists, and even taking the captain's armband for a considerable portion of the campaign.

Overall, the England international has become an essential part of Pochettino's squad, although that isn't reflected in his salary.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher celebrates.

His £50k-per-week wages mean that there are 18 players earning more than him, and a former Chelsea flop used to earn more than three times as much as well.

Alvaro Morata's salary at Chelsea

The flop in question is Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, who signed for Antonio Conte's Chelsea for a whopping £60m in July 2017.

The then-24-year-old was just coming off an impressive season for Real Madrid, in which he had scored 20 goals and provided six assists in 43 appearances, so expectations were understandably high.

Alvaro Morata

Unfortunately for all involved, the Madrid-born marksman failed to adjust to English football, and in his first year in Blue, he scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 48 appearances.

The 6 foot 3 forward didn't even last the full season in 2018/19.

In January, he moved to Atlético Madrid on loan, where he would spend the next season and a half before finally sealing a permanent move to the side in June 2020, leaving Stamford Bridge with 24 goals and six assists in 72 appearances.

In all, the Spanish international spent 79 weeks in West London earning a whopping £170k-per-week before his loan move away, meaning that, combined with his £60m transfer fee, he cost the Blues a staggering £73.4m.

That means he cost the club around £3m-per-goal, £12.2m-per-assist, or £1m-per-appearance, which is hardly value for money.

Ultimately, it would be hard to describe Morata's move as anything other than a failure, regardless of the money, so the fact that he earned more than three times as much as Gallagher and had very little to show for it just makes the whole deal even worse.

Spurs expected to bid for perfect £51m Richarlison replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are in a pretty good situation heading into the final phase of the campaign, the last international sojourn before this summer's country-contested tournaments is now concluded.

The London-based club are fifth in the Premier League, right behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, having built from the rubble of the 2022/23 term to hand a hopeful club the cherished seed of optimism, at the dawn of a promising new chapter.

Tottenham players celebrating.

Faint heart never won fair athlete, and Ange Postecoglou knows that his team must indeed ramp up the gas to succeed against the likes of Villa and Manchester United, with the latter creeping closer to Champions League security.

Recruitment has been shrewd and calculated but there is work to do and centre-forward will be a priority during the summer.

Spurs' transfer targets

According to reports over at Sport BILD in Germany – via Sport Witness – Tottenham are one of the main contenders for Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush, with the German outfit even expecting Spurs to make a bid.

The Egypt international has been in fine form for Die Adler and while they would agree to a sale, a lofty price tag approaching €60m (£51m) may well dissuade suitors.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

Dynamic and increasingly deadly, Marmoush is not the conventional striker but then when's Ange ever been averse to plucking players of a more positionally-flexible style?

Omar Marmoush's style of play

Frankfurt have not had Marmoush, aged 25, on the books long, signing him from Bundesliga rivals VFL Wolfsburg on a free transfer last summer.

No wonder manager Dino Toppmöller is happy to cash in; Frankfurt would make an astronomical profit, and given that his squad is nine points behind fifth-placed RB Leipzig, investment might not be a bad shout.

Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.

A versatile forward, two-footed and impressive across both flanks to complement his favoured central placement, Marmoush has been praised by his manager, who said: "He brings a completely different energy to our attacking play through his penetrating runs and tireless work rate."

Marmoush has made quite the impression since switching shirts in 2023, having posted 15 goals and six assists from 33 matches – 29 starts – finding prolific form in a principal deployment as the focal frontman.

The 6-foot Egyptian ranks among the top 7% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 12% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, with his clinical, creative and all-producing performances leading to comparisons with some exciting strikers.

"He works extremely hard and is hard to defend against," said the ever-vocal Toppmöller, delighted with his acquisition's progress. "His pace makes him an awkward opponent for defenders when he runs in behind them. I like that he is very diligent and always listens. His goals are a reward for his effort."

The £26k-per-week talent might not be the typical centre-forward but he's proving himself to be a solid marksman with a skill set that stretches far further.

With his array of abilities, it's surely worth a punt, especially given the murmurings concerning Richarlison in the transfer market.

According to reports in Italy – via Caught Offside – Richarlison could be tempted to abandon ship this summer following interest from the Middle East despite going from strength to strength under Postecoglou's leadership, with the Australian manager a big admirer of his Brazilian sharpshooter.

Still, Richarlison is probably aware that Tottenham plan to invest in a forward this summer, he likely knows that Heung-min Son will remain an intrinsic, untouchable member of Postecoglou's project. Perhaps he's attuned to the fact that a lucrative move elsewhere could be worthwhile.

Why Omar Marmoush could replace Richarlison

Richarlison joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Everton in a bumper package rising to £60m in 2022, with the 26-year-old enduring a torrid time last season and scoring just one league goal from 27 outings.

However, Postecoglou's appointment has been a providential move for the menacing forward, having overcome early-season injuries to plundered nine goals from ten Premier League matches, albeit returning to the injury front for three recent fixtures with a knee issue.

He ranks among the top 11% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 5% for touches in the attacking penalty area, the top 16% for tackles, the top 9% for interceptions and clearances and the top 1% for blocks per 90.

As the table above projects, both Richarlison and Marmoush have been in the same ballpark vis-a-vis goalscoring in their respective divisions, with the Frankfurt man adding double the assists and proving to be a more creative and multi-functioning player.

Both forwards are comparatively combative and chalk up pretty high tackling averages for those of their position, but Marmoush is demonstrably more energetic and tenacious, reflected through his superior metrics.

Moreover, the Egyptian is far more progressive with his play, evidenced by his earlier FBref statistics, and offers abilities that could be translated across myriad positions for Postecoglou's side, perhaps forming a wonderful partnership with the also dynamic Son.

Given that Spurs' South Korean skipper is one of the finest finishers that the Premier League has ever seen and that exciting young centre-forwards such as Alejo Veliz, Will Lankshear and Dane Scarlett are pushing for spots in Postecoglou's set-up in the years to come, adding Marmoush might be the perfect move to make.

Especially if Richarlison is sold; the forward's recent purple patch has been quite the spectacle but Marmoush appears to offer the goalscoring prowess and much more.

Celtic to make offer for "flamboyant" £3.4m target out of nowhere – report

Brendan Rodgers and Celtic are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window. The Scottish Premiership leaders are reportedly "on the verge" of landing wide man Nicolas Kuhn from Austrian club Rapid Vienna for a fee somewhere between £2.5m and £3m.

But that's not all Rodgers wants to do this month. Football Scotland's Mark Hendry says that the Hoops boss also wants to add a striker and a left-back to his squad, with Estoril's Tiago Araujo among the potential targets for the latter role. Celtic apparently made contact over Araujo in November, but it's been "crickets" since, with no sign of any further movement. That, though, could be about to change.

Celtic may finally make Araujo offer

After a prolonged period of silence, Celtic may now spring into action out of nowhere with an offer for Araujo. As per O Jogo, the Glasgow outfit are preparing a proposal for the Estroil defender.

Tiago Araujo

While fresh contact hasn't been made just yet, it would appear to be imminent. The Primeira Liga club will refuse to sell him for less than £3.5m, aware that his former club Benfica are entitled to half of the proceeds from his transfer.

Araujo can solve Taylor problem

Portugal under-21 international Araujo moved to Estoril in the summer of 2022 and has since gone on to make 53 appearances for the club, including 23 this season. He's delivered an impressive attacking output from full-back with six direct goal contributions (three goals, three assists).

Indeed, among left-backs in Europe's top 10 leagues, he ranks joint-10th for involvements in all competitions. If you look solely at players based in Portugal, only Sporting's Nuno Santos (12) and Portimonese's Goncalo Costa (seven) are ahead of him.

Relative to full-backs in comparable leagues over the last year, he ranks in the 85th percentile for crosses attempted per 90 minutes (4.58), and sits sixth in the Portuguese top-flight for completed crosses into the penalty area this season (11). He certainly doesn't shy away from going for goal himself either, placing as high as the 94th percentile for shots per 90 (1.33).

The 22-year-old's style of play is no surprise when you consider that he started out his career as a winger before shifting backwards. Talent scout Jacek Kulig has compared the "flamboyant" Araujo to former Spurs and Real Madrid man Gareth Bale, who underwent the opposition transformation in his career.

Rodgers has shown little trust in Alexandro Bernabei as a back-up for Greg Taylor, affording him just 71 minutes of playing time and refusing to start him in any competition. That's led to Taylor making the XI for every single league match up to this point, and completing 17 of those.

The squad clearly looks unbalanced in that area, with the Scotsman taking on a very high load, but Araujo's excellent form this season suggests he can provide the kind of cover and competition Rodgers needs. Celtic can expect Estoril to drive a hard bargain in the knowledge that they'll be forfeiting some of the fee, but their demands look fairly reasonable nonetheless.

Marnus Labuschagne battles for Glamorgan after Ben Brown ton

Glamorgan’s Nick Selman and Marnus Labuschagne put together an unbroken second-wicket stand of 137 to frustrate Sussex on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Hove.Already armed with a first-innings lead of 234, after they had been bowled out for 420 in their first innings, Sussex seemed to be in control when Mir Hamza had Charlie Hemphrey lbw in the first over without a run on the board. But the two Australians played with increasing authority during the final session with Labuschagne 77 and Selman 45 at stumps. After 15 wickets fell on day one the surface offered fewer problems for batsmen prepared to sit in and wait for the bad balls – a tactic the Glamorgan pair were happy to adopt as they reduced their arrears to 97, reaching stumps on 137 for 1.Earlier, Sussex skipper Ben Brown had made 131 – his 17th first-class century – as he backed up his 156 in last week’s drawn game against Northamptonshire with another chanceless hundred. Together with David Wiese, he took the initiative away from Glamorgan in the first session when 140 runs were scored with the sixth-wicket pair putting on 107 in 25 overs.Glamorgan used seven bowlers but struggled to stop Sussex progressing at nearly five runs an over, even after Wiese was bowled by Timm van der Gugten via an inside edge for Glamorgan’s only wicket during the morning session. Brown then joined forces with Chris Jordan to add 55 for the seventh wicket after reaching his hundred from 146 balls with 13 fours when he took a single off Labuschagne in the 65th over. After lunch he added a further four boundaries and a six off Marchant de Lange, which Billy Root initially seemed to have caught only to step back behind the rope. In attempting a similar shot later in the over, Brown gave Root a more comfortable catch running in from deep midwicket. Brown struck 15 fours in total and faced 190 balls.Danny Briggs was caught in the covers off de Lange who also picked up Hamza to finish with 3 for 89. Legspinner Labuschagne took 3 for 61 including Jordan, who was caught behind pushing forward when he appeared well set.Glamorgan were immediately in trouble when they went in again 234 behind. Hemphrey was beaten by Hamza’s late in-swing off the sixth ball of the innings to complete a pair. But Selman, who carried his bat in the first innings, and Labuschagne took advantage of benign conditions after tea to take the fight back to Sussex. Labuschagne took three boundaries in an over off Hamza to move to his half-century and none of the six bowlers employed by Brown could make a breakthrough in the final session.

England star speaks her mindHolds nothing back on the fieldLikes to play by her own rulesWHAT HAPPENED?

The Manchester United and Lionesses goalkeeper has never been one to bite her tongue, and that is certainly the case when she finds herself in the midst of competitive action. Earps famously let out a foul-mouthed roar when saving a penalty from Jenni Hermoso in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.

She continues to hold nothing back when turning out for club and country, with Earps telling when asked what would be picked up if she were to play with a wire: “A lot of profanity I think, I’m just super passionate and a few of the girls have said to me that when we’re playing small sided games, they’ll just listen to the stuff that comes out my mouth because its just random and kind of unfiltered. Its exactly what I’m thinking. I’m very competitive, I play to win, I play hard. I don’t like to lose.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earps is not about to change her ways and added on the importance of living life by her own rules: “Its important to be yourself all the time. I think I pride myself on being a bit of a goofball but I’m just kind of a normal person who’s just trying to see how far she can go in her career and just tries to be authentically herself.”
