Better than Kerkez: Liverpool join the race for "world-class" £50m LB

Liverpool are expected to enter the summer transfer window with attacking intent, bolstering Arne Slot’s talented squad with high-quality additions across the park.

While fans eagerly await news of forwards to strengthen a somewhat lopsided frontline, the realm of full-back is sure to receive focused attention too. And interestingly, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, it’s left-back that will receive the biggest facelift in spite of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s expected move to Real Madrid.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold

Milos Kerkez is the name on everyone’s lips, but Liverpool aren’t a team to place all their eggs in one basket, and may well have found the perfect alternative.

Liverpool transfer news

Kerkez, 21, is expected to leave Bournemouth this summer, with reputable sources like Fabrizio Romano suggesting Liverpool are among the favourites to complete a deal.

However, Kerkez isn’t the only exciting talent on the market. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool have joined the race to sign Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso.

Riddled with monetary issues, Juventus are ready to hold a fire sale as they try to avoid financial sanctions and Cambiaso is among those listed.

Juventus' Andrea Cambiaso

A top player, the Old Lady will field enquiries worth €60m (£50m), with Manchester City and Bayern Munich also interested.

Kerkez, meanwhile, is understood hold a lesser value, around £40m.

Why Andrea Cambiaso may be better than Kerkez

Cambiaso has completed 74 matches, notching 14 goal involvements, for Juventus since joining from Serie A rivals Genoa in 2022.

Physically gifted and endowed with the pace and potency down the flank to serve strongly as an all-encompassing wide defender, Cambiaso may well be a better, more refined pick for Slot’s Liverpool than Kerkez.

No disrespect to the Hungarian, who would mark an upgrade on both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, but Juventus simply have one of the best in the business, who has shone despite his side’s struggles this year under the recently dismissed Thiago Motta.

In fairness, there’s not the greatest deal of statistical difference between the two players, but deeper diving reveals Cambiaso to be among the most balanced attacking full-backs in the game.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has even been singled out for his “world-class vision” by journalist Zach Lowy. He might be on the wrong side, but this would certainly help to ameliorate Alexander-Arnold’s looming departure.

Club Brugge's Chemsdine Talbi in action with Juventus'AndreaCambiaso

As per FBref, Cambiaso actually ranks among the top 12% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for pass completion and the top 9% for progressive carries per 90, emphasising his athleticism and creative flair.

That’s not to say Kerkez isn’t a holder of such virtues himself, but if we refresh ourselves with the table above, he’s not yet as refined or relentless as the Italy international.

With so much upheaval set to take place at Anfield this summer, Liverpool may do well to welcome Cambiaso to the ranks. He won’t come cheap, but there are scant few superior options across Europe who could make the marked improvement on Slot’s already-thriving team.

Time's up: Ange can end Son's Spurs career by unleashing "mind-blowing" gem

The last few years have been more than a little bumpy for Tottenham Hotspur.

The club has cycled through managers of varying styles before landing on the uber-attacking Ange Postecoglou.

On top of that, the squad has seen a fair bit of churn, with a number of players leaving, most notably the record-breaking and era-defining Harry Kane.

However, as this season has shown, the North Londoners’ project is far from complete, and it might soon be time for another club icon to follow the Englishman out the door.

The Spurs star who should be phased out

It will come as no surprise to those who have been watching Spurs this season that the icon we are talking about is Son Heung-min.

Heung-min Son for Tottenham

The South Korean superstar is undoubtedly a legend of the club and one of the most devastatingly effective wingers the league has seen over the last decade or so, but therein lies one of the key issues with him playing a prominent role today: he’s been around too long.

Unfortunately, as with all professional footballers at some point in their careers, the former Bayer Leverkusen star is simply a victim of time.

For example, research from The Athletic revealed that wingers hit their peak at 26 years old, and their ability to take-on defenders dramatically decreases at 30 – the Lilywhites star is 33 in May.

Moreover, while he can still be brilliant in bursts here and there, as he was against Ipswich Town, those bursts don’t come frequently enough anymore.

Indeed, even though he has been able to rack up a tally of ten goals and ten assists this season, he’s found the back of the net in the league just once since the 22nd of December.

In all, Son is a true Tottenham legend, but to ensure Postecoglou’s project can continue to develop next season and beyond, it might be time for him to take more of a backseat in the squad, especially as the manager might already have the perfect replacement.

The Spurs ace to replace Son

While the likes of Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert could certainly fall into this category, we are leaning towards Mathys Tel.

The 19-year-old dynamo may only be on loan from Bayern Munich at the moment, but there is a £45m option to buy in his deal and, according to reports earlier this month, there is a feeling from some in the know that he’s open to remaining in North London for the long term.

Now, it would be fair to say that, so far this season, the young Frenchman hasn’t exactly shown why he is so highly rated.

However, he was limited to just 458 minutes in Germany and has only just arrived in a brand-new team and country, so the fact he’s already scored a goal in just 299 minutes of action is a reasonable return.

Moreover, when the “mind-blowing” prospect, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, was given 1406 minutes of first-team football for Bayern in 41 appearances last season, he managed to score ten goals and provide six assists, which comes out to an astounding average of a goal involvement every 87.87 minutes.

Finally, while he has played up top a few times since moving to N17, he spent just as much time off the left while in Germany, so he should be able to step into Son’s shoes and support Dominic Solanke on his return without much trouble.

Ultimately, the South Korean international has been nothing short of sensational for Tottenham over the last decade, but to move the club forward, he probably needs to step back, and in Tel, Postecoglou could have the perfect long-term replacement.

He won 0 duels: Farke must drop Leeds dud who proved he’s not PL class

Leeds United extended their lead at the top of the Championship table to two points after they picked up a point away from home against Burnley on Monday night.

The Whites secured a hard-fought draw with the Clarets at Turf Moor, with neither side doing much to test either Illan Meslier or James Trafford throughout the match.

Given that Burnley are also competing for automatic promotion and were in the Premier League last season, it was a good test for some of Daniel Farke’s players to see if they have the credentials to make the step up to the top flight.

Sadly, one player failed to prove that he has what it takes to make the grade if Leeds are promoted to the Premier League for the 2025/26 campaign.

Leeds' biggest underperformer against Burnley

The Dutch forward had a terrific opportunity to prove to Farke, and the supporters, that he can be the difference-maker against a potentially top-flight level defence.

Unfortunately, he became just the latest striker to fail to score past England goalkeeper James Trafford, who has kept 19 clean sheets in 28 matches.

The shot-stopper had an easy evening at Turf Moor, though, because Piroe failed to offer much up against CJ Egan Riley and Maxime Esteve, who dominated him all night.

As you can see in the table above, the former Swansea man’s lack of mobility and physicality allowed the Burnley defenders to enjoy a comfortable evening, as he failed to win a single duel and did not make any impact at the top end of the pitch.

It was a chance for Piroe to prove that he has the physical and technical attributes to make the step up to the Premier League, and he failed on both counts – which is why Farke must drop him from the team.

Why Farke should drop Piroe

It was a lethargic and poor display from the Dutch striker and it was his third match without a goal in the Championship, recording just one chance created in those three outings.

In fact, Piroe has only scored six goals in his 19 starts in the second tier, with a further four as a substitute, and this shows that he has failed to offer consistent quality in the final third.

The left-footed attacker has lost a whopping 75% of his duels in the Championship this season, which illustrates his lack of strength in physical battles with opposition defenders, and this means that Leeds are not getting a physical presence or regular goals from him as a starting option.

Piroe does have quality as a finisher, as shown in the clip above and by his ten goals from 7.05 xG, but his all-round game and lack of athleticism, as shown in the draw with Burnley, suggests that he does not have what it takes to make it in the Premier League.

Therefore, Farke should drop the Dutchman in the short-term, given his recent performances, whilst also considering what to do with the number nine position heading into next season.

Leeds are reportedly one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign the midfielder.

Moeen Ali becomes latest player to predict demise of ODI cricket

“It’s almost like the long, boring format… there’s no importance given to it at the moment”

Vithushan Ehantharajah06-Aug-2022Moeen Ali has become the latest high-profile cricketer to bemoan an unsustainable schedule and predict the end is nigh for one-day internationals.Over the last month, Moeen’s teammates, such as Jos Buttler, Joe Root and Ben Stokes have urged cricket’s governing bodies to reassess the schedule during a period in which England played 12 white-ball matches against India and South Africa in 25 days.Stokes, who ended up retiring from ODIs during this period in a bid to prolong his future in Tests (as captain) and Twenty20s ahead of the World Cup this winter, used his media engagements around his farewell to call for change. “We are not cars,” he said. “You can’t just fill us up and we’ll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again.”Interim ECB chief executive Clare Connor addressed Stokes’s comments earlier this week when speaking to the BBC, confirming the governing body have listened to his and other players’ concerns. “It’s something that we have got to grapple with – that’s us with players, other boards, the International Cricket Council and the Professional Cricketers’ Association.”It is a problem that is only going to be exacerbated by the increase in franchise competitions in the calendar. Along with the Hundred, which kicked off its second season on Wednesday, new T20 offerings in the United Arab Emirates and South Africa have sprouted by to step on one another’s toes and those of the international game.Ben Stokes walks back after his final ODI innings•AFP/Getty ImagesSpeaking ahead of the launch of KP Snacks’ summer cricket roadshow at The Black Prince Trust in Oval, ahead of his first game of this summer’s Hundred, Moeen, captain of Birmingham Phoenix, lamented a international and domestic programme that needed to be unravelled.”It’s all over the place at the minute,” he said. “You’re trying to get a couple of franchise gigs which are decent, but you’re going to miss a couple of Test matches or the ODIs – that’s the horrible bit, I think, because you want to play for England as much as you can. You don’t want to be missing… I used to hate resting when I was a bit younger.”At the moment it’s not sustainable in my opinion. Something has to be done because I fear losing the 50-over format in a couple of years because it’s almost like the long, boring one, if that makes sense. It’s almost like you’ve got T20s, you’ve got the Test matches which are great and then the 50 overs is just in the middle – there’s no importance given to it at the moment.”So yeah, I think there’s too much – personally I feel like there’s too much going on. It’s great in a way, because there’s always cricket being played, but it should never come in the way of international cricket in my opinion.”Moeen also warned players are now more like to do as Stokes has done and ditch a format of the game for their own ambitions and well-being. The offspinning allrounder did similar at the end of the 2021 summer when he ruled himself out of Test selection, only to admit he was open to adding to his 64 caps in June.Related

“International cricket in all three formats is by far the best cricket to play. There’s no doubt about that,” he said. “But I do worry there are so many tournaments out there that players are retiring more now – and you’ll see more retiring soon – because of overlapping schedules. He has no plans at present to trim any of his current obligations. While a Test recall for the tour of Pakistan at the end of the year is likely, it is isolated enough to not impinge on other commitments over the winter. But, at 35, he sympathises with those in the early stages of their career as they decide upon which path to take at a time when cricket’s ecosystem is seemingly in a constant state of flux.”From my point of view, because I’m in the back end of my 30s, it’s easier for me to go right like I did, where you don’t play Test matches, you now concentrate on franchise cricket. Whereas if you’re a young player coming through there’s so much to be made money-wise away from international cricket as well.”So you’re almost like I’m not too bothered because in terms of money, you lose that hunger and I guess I think you lose that thirst for Test cricket, which is the absolute pinnacle.”If I don’t play then I’ve got plenty out there. And that’s the danger really because there’s so much Test matches, there’s so much potential especially during the way England are playing at the moment. And I know it’s very early but there’s so many good players out there that could easily just turn their backs a little bit on Test cricket – not turn their backs, but not be worried that they need to play Test cricket, whereas I reckon about 10 or 15 years ago, it was all about playing Test cricket.”KP Snacks, Official Team Partner of The Hundred, are touring the country this summer to offer more opportunities for people to play cricket as part of their ‘Everyone In’ campaign. Sunderland eyeing "exciting" signing who could make Bellingham even better

Sunderland will hope they can remain in sight of the automatic promotion spots up until May, with Regis Le Bris’ side the third and final challenger to Leeds United at the very top of the Championship tree.

Indeed, the impressive Black Cats sit only three points behind Daniel Farke’s precarious table-toppers, having clinched their 14th victory of the season to date when beating relegation-threatened Portsmouth by a solitary goal last match.

Le Bris won’t be a fool though in expecting his side to be able to keep up the pace with the Whites with what he currently has at his disposal, knowing that his squad is somewhat light on its feet owing to injury troubles.

Therefore, the Wearside outfit could snap up a classy operator in the middle of the park this January to boost numbers. Someone who has previously worked alongside the popular Frenchman could arrive…

Sunderland enquire about midfield signing

According to reports from Italy, the second-tier promotion hopefuls have enquired about the availability of AS Roma outcast Enzo Le Fee, with the enquiry an “explicit” request from Le Bris himself.

After all, the 49-year-old played a key role in the midfielder’s development at the Ligue 1 club, with a reunion now potentially on the cards owing to Le Fee’s lack of game-time under Claudio Ranieri.

This could be seen as a coup on the end of the Black Cats, considering the 24-year-old target cost Roma in excess of £20m to pick up just last year.

Now, he could be lining up for Sunderland as they hunt down promotion glory, with his addition to the ranks perhaps seeing him link up with Jobe Bellingham well, alongside offering a more experienced head away from over-relying on the likes of Chris Rigg to deliver the goods.

What Le Fee could offer Sunderland

Described as an “exciting” player by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Le Fee will be one homegrown talent Lorient are surely proud of, alongside once giving a platform to the likes of Illan Meslier who now plays for Sunderland’s promotion rivals in Leeds.

He even scored against Paris St. Germain back in 2022 under Le Bris’ tutelage, as Lorient unexpectedly beat a Kylian Mbappe-led PSG 3-1.

A further eight goals and 15 assists came his way across 142 total games before he departed in the wake of his boyhood club’s relegation down to Ligue 2.

Looking at the table above, his impressive numbers from his final season at the French club – which saw him tally up five goals and five assists – could stand him in good stead to leave a lasting impression at Sunderland, with his adaptability to play all across the central midfield positions a big bonus.

After all, Le Bris has played the likes of Jobe Bellingham deeper in the middle of the park or as a number ten, and he could well do the same with Le Fee, but the new Frenchman might well complement the 19-year-old more by playing further back to enable the in-demand ex-Birmingham City man more freedom in attack.

The Sunderland number seven has a fierce shot like this in his locker, which means he is wasted by playing in a holding role. Meanwhile, Le Fee – based on the table above – can put together better numbers playing in a more reserved part of the pitch.

Yet, he can do a job in attack when needed, with the 24-year-old a far more well-rounded talent than Rigg too in this role, who does have four league goals next to his name for 2024/25, but isn’t the finished article by any stretch of the imagination.

With the starlet now out injured, Le Bris does need some boosts centrally, with a well-known figure to him in Le Fee perhaps giving his Black Cats side an edge in the ongoing promotion tussle.
