Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and the South Africa trio of Ayabonga Khaka, Sune Luus and Chloe Tryon are in a list of nine overseas players set to take part in the inaugural women’s CPL. These players have been split into three teams, which will also be involved in the 6ixty, a T10 tournament. Matches start on August 24 and go on till September 4.Most of the big names in women’s cricket are currently involved in The Hundred in England, which ends only on September 3. This includes the captains of Barbados Royals and Trinbago Knight Riders. However, Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin are expected to cut their stay short and return to the Caribbean soon.Athapaththu, Sri Lanka’s highest run-getter in T20Is, will join Khaka, the fast bowler recently named South Africa women’s player of the year, at Guyana Amazon Warriors. They will be led by Stafanie Taylor.Luus, who has 931 runs and 48 wickets in 91 T20Is, will be with Knight Riders, and play alongside Hayley Jensen, the seam-bowling allrounder who helped New Zealand win the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games recently.Anisa Mohammed, the highest wicket-taker in women’s T20Is, and Dottin, who retired from international cricket over issues with Cricket West Indies the other day, bring the local flavour. The Royals’ contingent includes Tryon, the South Africa veteran who has played 174 times for her country, and Fatima Sana, the 20-year-old at the start of her career as a seam-bowling allrounder for Pakistan. All three teams are made up of 14 players and include one each from the USA: 15-year-old Snigdha Paul (Royals), 16-year-old Isani Vaghela (Amazon Warriors), and 18-year-old Geetika Kodali (Knight Riders).Barbados Royals: Hayley Matthews (capt), Shakera Selman (vice-capt), Fatima Sana (Pakistan), Chloe Tryon (South Africa), Snigdha Paul (USA), Reneice Boyce, Mandy Rangru, Britney Cooper, Aaliyah Alleyne, Shanika Bruce, Afy Fletcher, Qiana Joseph, Japhina Joseph, Chinelle HenryGuyana Amazon Warriors: Stafanie Taylor (capt), Shermaine Campbell (vice-capt), Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka), Ayabonga Khaka (South Africa), Isani Vaghela (USA), Rashada Williams, Rachel Vincent, Kaycia Schultz, Chedean Nationa, Cherry-Ann Fraser, Shamilla Connell, Karishma Ramharak, Shabika Gajnabi, Zaida JamesTrinbago Knight Riders: Deandra Dottin (capt), Anisa Mohammed (vice-capt), Hayley Jensen (New Zealand), Sune Luus (South Africa), Geetika Kodali (USA), Lee Ann Kirby, Kyshona Knight, Kycia Knight, Natasha McLean, Sheneta Grimmond, Caneisha Isaac, Jannillea Glasgow, Steffie Soogrim, Shawnisha Hector

Slot must drop Gomez & unleash "exceptional" Liverpool gem instead

Ibrahima Konate will be a huge loss for Liverpool while he is out injured. Arne Slot confirmed following the win over Manchester City last weekend that the defender will be “out for a few weeks” after an injury sustained in the Champions League clash against Real Madrid the previous midweek.

He has been imperative for the Reds this season, as they sit top of the pile in the Premier League. The Frenchman has played 12 times in the top flight, with his centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk explaining “the qualities he has are outstanding” earlier in the season.

However, with Konate sidelined for the foreseeable future, Van Dijk will need a new partner at the heart of the Liverpool defence. Joe Gomez was the man who took up that mantle last weekend.

Gomez’s stats this season

With Konate’s impressive form this term, it has not been a campaign filled with opportunities for England international Gomez. He has played just nine games in all competitions, with four of those coming in the Premier League.

Frustratingly, he has played just 145 top-flight minutes altogether, with his first start coming last weekend against the Cityzens. Indeed, that was a positive performance against the reigning top-flight champions.

Gomez earned an impressive 8/10 for his efforts against Pep Guardiola’s side. The Guardian journalist Andy Hunter praised the former Charlton Athletic defender for “an assured defensive display” against City.

He has come a long way under Slot since the first game of the season. The 27-year-old, who has never scored a professional goal, was left out of their season opener away to Ipswich Town.

That led to a report from The Times explaining that he could depart the club over the summer, although that did not materialise. Since then, the defender – who was ironically close to a move to today’s opponents, Newcastle United – has knuckled down well and put in a strong performance against City to prove his worth in the squad.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

With the games coming thick and fast for Liverpool, Slot may well decide to rotate his side around and could leave Gomez out of the starting lineup against Newcastle, in favour of Jarrell Quansah.

Why Quansah could start against Newcastle

The 2023/24 campaign was a breakout season for Reds academy product Quansah. He played 33 times under Jurgen Klopp, becoming an important squad player and even being named in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, this season has been the opposite for the 21-year-old. Under Slot, Quansah has featured just four times in all competitions, with just two of those games coming in the Premier League.

Interestingly, the defender did make a start at Portman Road at the start of the season, with his other appearance coming off the bench against City last weekend. In that heavyweight showdown, he helped to hold down the fort and ensure City did not find a route back into the game.

It may well be seen as a risk to drop Gomez in favour of the youngster who has had fewer minutes this term. However, as the stats from the 2023/24 Premier League season, courtesy of Squawka, there is not too much between them from a numerical standpoint.

On the ball, Quansah played more forward passes per game, with 29.6 to Gomez’s 17.9, and won more aerial duels, with 3.5 compared to just 1.6 for his teammate.

It is a chance for the “exceptional” defender, as football scout Antonio Mango described him, to stake a claim in the Liverpool side whilst Konate is sidelined. He will be coming up against Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, one of the most deadly attacking duos in the Premier League.

They have four joint goal involvement in 60 games together so far, and although they have not been in the best form this term, there is a chance to make a statement to Slot by keeping them quiet.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

It would be a bold call for Slot to bring Quansah into the side, especially coming up against Isak and Gordon. He will have his work cut out against two lethal attacking players, but it is a challenge the Liverpool academy graduate will surely rise to meet, as he tries to lock down a regular starting spot.

Former Derby County academy starlet could join Leeds if they get promoted

Carlton Palmer believes a former Derby County academy starlet could join Leeds United but only if they are promoted to the Premier League, according to a recent report. The Whites head into this international break on the back of a win, beating QPR 2-0 after suffering a disappointing defeat to Millwall last week.

Leeds confirm partnership with company who caused chaos in $11bn industry

ByBarney Lane Nov 13, 2024 Leeds transfer news

The January transfer window is not that far away from opening now, and given that Leeds and Daniel Farke will have aims of reaching the Premier League, it may be a useful time for them to add to their squad.

Defence, especially left-back, looks to be a position that the Whites want to address, as they have been linked with a move for Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin this week. The Yorkshire side are keeping tabs on the defender ahead of January, as they weigh up the possibility of making a move for one of their promotion rivals’ best players.

As well as looking at Cirkin, it also emerged that Leeds are in the race to sign Archie Brown from KAA Gent. Again, the club is keeping an eye on the defender but have strong competition, as Premier League teams such as Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Brentford, and Fulham are all interested in signing the former Derby County man.

Archie Brown could join Leeds if they get promoted

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer believes Archie Brown would join Leeds if they get promoted to the Premier League. The 22-year-old started his football career in Derby’s academy, playing for their under-18s and under-23s. In 2021, he left the Rams to join Lausanne-Sport, without playing a game in the first team, and from there he has since joined KAA Gent.

Archie Brown

Brown has impressed this season, scoring one goal and grabbing two assists in 14 Jupiler Pro League games, form that has put him on the radar of a host of clubs in England.

Palmer believes Leeds can sign Brown, but only as long as they win promotion to the top flight this season: “Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United are among the clubs reportedly interested in Gent defender Archie Brown. This is not the first time Leeds United have been interested in Archie Brown. The 22-year-old left England in 2021 after coming through the ranks at Derby County.

“He sought pastures new, starting in Switzerland with Lausanne-Sport. He swapped Switzerland for Belgium last year, joining Gent, and he’s seen his career go from strength-to-strength. He’s played that well, he’s been rewarded with an England youth debut in the summer, and he’s attracting a lot of attention.

“The problem that Leeds United will have is that they’ll have to be in the Premier League to get him, so it’s unlikely that they’ll get him in the January transfer window, especially with the likes of Tottenham and West Ham credited with an interest, as well as Chelsea and Brentford. Leeds went after him in 2023 and were unable to get him, so they are big admirers of the defender, but it’s thought that they will have to be in the Premier League to get his signature.

“But, if the player is sensible, even if you want to go and play in a Premier League side, you look at the type of clubs interested in signing you, and you have to wonder whether you’ll go straight into the side and play, so Leeds could well be in the race.

“It would be a coup for them if they could pull it off, and the fact that they could offer him first-team football now and the way they’re going now, they will hopefully see it over the line and get promotion. He’ll have more chance of playing in Leeds United’s first team than he would with Tottenham, West Ham, and Chelsea. As a young player he’s already had that where he’s not playing regularly, and that’s why he went to Switzerland and Belgium, so it would be a massive coup for Leeds United, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Throughout this second disappointing season at Old Trafford, Hojlund has struggled to get into games and assert himself against opposition defences. In 22 league appearances so far, the Dane has scored just two goals and not registered a single assist. He is yet to score this calendar year and time appears to be running out for the 22-year-old to make his mark at the Red Devils. His lack of goals can be partly explained by his lack of shots – he has taken just 13 shots (excluding blocks) in the league this season.

Ruben Amorim has pointed to a lack of chances being created, but by comparison, Bruno Fernandes leads United's shot count with 44, while Mohamed Salah is top of the Premier League standings with 84. Other centre-forwards, including Raul Jimenez, Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson all have over 50 each, while Alexander Isak, Yoane Wissa and Kai Havertz have over 40 each. Even the likes of Virgil van Dijk (17), Wilfred Ndidi (17), Casemiro (16), Fabian Schar (16) and Gabriel Magalhaes (15) have more, while another United team-mate, Matthijs de Ligt, has attempted the same amount (13).

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Hojlund joined the club in the summer of 2023 for a reported £72 million ($92m) from Serie A side Atalanta. Despite fans expecting an immediate impact from the big-money signing, the Dane took time to finally score his first goal and has struggled to lead the line effectively. Even under the guidance of a new boss in Ruben Amorim, Hojlund has looked out of place as the sole number nine in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. His failure to improve this season is underscored further by the bleak statistic.

United are reportedly already considering replacing Hojlund in the next transfer window. It's ben rumoured that the Red Devils are plotting a move for Napoli's exiled striker Victor Osimhen, currently on-loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray, and believe they need an upgrade on the Dane if they are to surge back up the Premier League. Amorim has suggested his players' struggles are partly due to their own mindset and Hojlund has serious work to do if he is to regain confidence in front of goal and take more shots.

Sandhu hat-tricks Thunder to another win over Scorchers

Scorchers remain at the top of the table despite the loss, while Thunder are now tied on points with second-placed Sydney Sixers

Tristan Lavalette06-Jan-2022Gurinder Sandhu claimed a BBL hat-trick as Sydney Thunder continued their stranglehold over league leaders Perth Scorchers with a six-wicket victory in a rain-affected match at Gold Coast.Sandhu claimed his third hat-trick in Australian domestic competitions to help restrict Scorchers to a modest 9 for 133 off 18 overs on a slow Metricon Stadium pitch. Needing a revised 135 runs off 18 overs, Thunder overcame a late wobble to prevail with six balls to spare.Thunder have inflicted Scorchers’ their only two losses in ten matches this season after a 34-run win in Canberra on December 28. And they have now pulled level with second-placed Sydney Sixers on 23 points after winning their fourth straight game.Sandhu’s three-card trick
Sandhu is the only cricketer to have taken two hat-tricks in Australia’s List A competition and achieved the feat this time in the BBL.It took a while to happen, though, with Sandhu’s first wicket, of Colin Munro, off the last ball of the 12th over, and then he returned to the attack only in the 16th, when he outfoxed Aaron Hardie with a slower ball and then got Laurie Evans when the batter attempted a slog. That made Sandhu the seventh bowler to claim a BBL hat-trick.His heroics ensured Thunder did not miss Pakistani quick Mohammad Hasnain, who was unavailable because of Queensland’s Covid-19 border restrictions. Thunder showcased their array of talent with a disciplined performance as English import Sadiq Mahmood bade farewell to the BBL with two wickets.Munro fails to get going
Even though there was a forecast of rain, Scorchers stuck with their preference of batting first, and opener Kurtis Patterson did his best to vindicate that decision with a couple of boundaries in the opening over. But a 25-minute rain break during the third over halted his momentum as Patterson fell giving a catch to extra cover shortly after resumption. The onus was then on the big hitting Munro, who has had a superb season but looked out of sorts in his last start against Sydney Sixers with a scratchy 36-ball 27. Once again, Munro was unable to find his usual belligerence with a subdued knock of 18 off 20 balls.Scorchers were rocked by Sandhu’s double-strike in the 16th over, but were given a nudge by Ashton Agar, who threw the bat around – quite literally in the last over – in a handy late cameo.Jason Sangha top-scored in the Thunder chase•Getty ImagesThunder get home despite Hales’ struggle
Alex Hales has had a miserable BBL season, exacerbated by contracting Covid-19, which forced him to miss Thunder’s two matches against Adelaide Strikers. He returned, but his touch still deserted him as a frustrated Hales was completely overshadowed by Matthew Gilkes, who smashed Lance Morris for 14 runs in the opening over.Gilkes’ pyrotechnics eased the burden on Hales, who only scored one run off his first seven deliveries before finally smashing a boundary to end the four-over powerplay. He demonstrated his famed power with a six over long-on to bring up Thunder’s 50 in the seventh over. His partner departed soon after but Jason Sangha kept the momentum going with some blistering shots around the wicket to underline his burgeoning credentials.Hales couldn’t shake off his struggles and his 32-ball 26 ended when he holed out in the 13th over and Thunder still had work to do. When Sangha was bowled for 32 in the next over, Thunder appeared tense, needing 40 runs off the final four overs. But Oliver Davies and Sam Billings steadied the ship with the Englishman finishing his BBL stint in style with the winning boundary.Scorchers left to rue sloppiness on the field
Scorchers rested spearhead Jason Behrendorff for the second straight game, perhaps sensing it was a good opportunity to give him an extended breather with Tymal Mills playing his final match of the season. For much of Thunder’s chase, Scorchers seemed out of answers but in trademark style they slowly clawed back into the contest. Mills bowled tightly in the 11th over as Scorchers started turning the screws and they sensed another comeback when Matthew Kelly unleashed a superb yorker to knock over Sangha. But Scorchers were unusually sloppy under pressure, marked by a crucial drop by wicketkeeper Cameron Bancroft to reprieve Billings when Thunder needed 19 runs off 14 balls.Even though he struggled late, Mills will be an undeniable loss for Scorchers who will probably hope they don’t see their bogey team Thunder again this season.

Crystal Palace serious contenders for £200k-p/w January signing for Glasner

Crystal Palace have emerged as a serious contender to land an international defender in January as they look to recover from a poor start to the Premier League season, according to one report.

Crystal Palace see wings clipped

A tricky start to the season has undone much of the good work Oliver Glasner manager in south London at the end of last season, with a confused and toothless Crystal Palace side yet to manage a win in this season’s Premier League. Though they are not the only winless team, they have scored just five times so far this campaign despite shelling out on attacking trio Eddie Nketiah, Ismaila Sarr and Daichi Kamada over the summer.

The same number of goals as struggling Manchester United, they have found the net just once more than Southampton, who are the division’s lowest scorers. At the other end, Dean Henderson has been beaten on 10 occasions and Palace have laboured to three draws, losing four times already, though they did edge past Championship side QPR in the Carabao Cup thanks to Nketiah’s first and, as it stands, only goal for his new side.

There remains plenty of time to turn things around, and there is little pressure on Glasner, with Palace chairman Steve Parish willing to give him time to turn things around at Selhurst Park as he gets to grip with a new-look squad that has yet to truly be used thanks to injuries and form. Now, they are emerging as a potential destination for an out-of-favour star this January.

Palace serious contenders to sign England defender

That comes as Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips has revealed that Palace are one of the most “serious clubs” to watch when it comes to the future of Ben Chilwell.

The England defender was publicly cast out by Enzo Maresca but could not find a move away from Stamford Bridge before the summer transfer window closed, and has now been somewhat sheepishly added back into the Blues’ Premier League squad.

Despite this, it is clear that his future lies away from Stamford Bridge irrespective of his £200,000 a week deal in west London, which runs until 2027. There is quite a queue for his signature, with Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United and Ipswich Town as well as clubs from across Europe keen to bring the 27-year-old defender out of the footballing wilderness.

Crystal Palace have a "top player" who could be their new Olise

Crystal Palace may have their next Olise in the pipeline, who is currently out on loan

ByConnor Holden Oct 16, 2024

As it stands, those clubs are all offering loan moves, something that Chelsea are yet to accept, and they are keen for a sale. But the Blues may be forced to consider cut-price options after shelling out £50m for the fullback, as they did with Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan on deadline day on favourable terms to the Gunners.

Palace may hold an advantage in the race for Chilwell’s signature too, with his agency, CAA Stellar, also representing Palace no.1 Henderson, while they have good working relations with Chelsea after signing Trevoh Chalobah on loan in the summer.

However, a move for either Chilwell or Chalobah would have to be permanent for both to reunite at Selhurst Park, with the Premier League’s rules stating that only one loanee from any single club can be permitted. With Chalobah’s deal already sealed until the end of the season, a change to that seems unlikely, leaving a permanent deal for Chilwell as the only realistic solution.

With Tyrick Mitchell the only recognised left-sided defender in Glasner’s squad, it is clearly an area that will require attention in the winter window, though whether they will be able to negotiate a permanent deal for Chilwell remains to be seen.

Nat Sciver, Katherine Brunt strike devastating blow after Heather Knight sets up England win

How to defend a sub-par total in Bristol, by Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver – so England penned their victory tale against New Zealand in the first edition of their five-match ODI series. After the home side were bowled out for 241 with three balls left, the two England spearheads turned the plot on its head during a devastating spell at the start of New Zealand’s run-chase in which Brunt bowled four maidens on the trot and Sciver took 2 for 10 from five overs.Sophie Ecclestone added her own chapter by claiming two wickets in two balls, while Kate Cross also claimed two as Amy Satterthwaite offered valiant resistance with an unbeaten 79 that included a 78-run stand with Sophie Devine and took the match far deeper than England would have wanted.England’s innings had been built on an excellent 89 from captain Heather Knight, who was well supported by Tammy Beaumont’s 44 and Brunt’s 43. But with Lauren Winfield-Hill the only other England batter to reach double figures, the hosts would be left to wonder if they’d done enough. After three overs, the tourists had managed just one run, a hurried single that would have resulted in a run out, had Beaumont’s diving throw from backward point not been a fraction wide. They’d only added one more when Sciver had Bates comfortably caught by Knight at first slip and, after five overs, New Zealand were 2 for 1, compared to England’s 30 for 1.Sciver struck again on the last ball of the Powerplay, luring an edge from Down which was taken by Amy Jones behind the stumps and New Zealand were 17 for 2 after 10 overs.Cross had Maddy Green caught at slip by Knight to make it 31 for 3 in the 13th over. But then Devine and Satterthwaite steadied the innings with a calm that seemed to mimic the twin hot-air balloons floating in the distance. They were by no means scoring freely, rather holding things together after a turbulent launch, however, and as those vessels drifted beyond the suburban skyline, so too did the victory target disappear out of sight – or so it seemed.Needing to score at a run a ball for the last half of the innings, Satterthwaite twice took a chance on the field with skyward shots that landed safely. She got one away nicely off Cross, back over the bowler’s head, but when Cross’s ever-reliable line and length was rewarded again with the wicket of Devine, caught at mid-on by Winfield-Hill for 34 three balls later, the tourists needed to rebuild again with the required rate creeping steadily higher.Ecclestone removed Katey Martin and Brooke Halliday with consecutive balls and it appeared just a matter of time for England to seal the win. Worryingly for England, it took time, especially given Knight’s edict before the match for her side to be more ruthless.Brunt’s return to action was delayed by a spell off the field to treat some tightness in her back but when she re-entered the the attack – with figures of 4-4-0-0 – New Zealand were six wickets down and still 118 runs adrift of their target.Brunt struck with the last ball of her second over back, trapping Hannah Rowe lbw to end with 1 for 22 from eight overs. Debutant Charlie Dean even chimed in with the wicket of Jess Kerr, bowled by a pearl of a delivery which took the top of off stump.Lea Tahuhu made a spirited 25 off just 14 in a late 34-run stand with Satterthwaite but was bowled by Freya Davies, and then Leigh Kasperek and Satterthwaite put on another 34 for the final wicket before Kasperek was brilliantly run out by Winfield-Hill in the middle of the 47th over.Kerr claimed three wickets for the White Ferns, while Tahuhu made an excellent return from foot surgery with two wickets and Devine also chimed in with two.The hosts plumped for Winfield-Hill despite adding Danni Wyatt – who had opened alongside Beaumont throughout the T20 series, which England won 2-1 – to the ODI squad.Winfield-Hill remains in search of the form that would see her cement a spot ahead of next year’s World Cup after she was strangled down the leg side by Rowe for 21 off 24 balls, ending a solid opening stand of 41.Beaumont was particularly strong on the drive, which delivered five of her six boundaries. There was little urgency to her innings but she looked solid after being dropped on 5 at the end of the third over when she sent a Devine delivery low to Green, who couldn’t hold on at first slip.Devine made the breakthrough, almost as an afterthought when she rapped Beaumont on the knee roll apparently in line but drew only a lone shout for lbw from the field. Devine made a last-second call for the DRS, which showed the ball striking the pad before the bat and going on to hit the top of leg stump.Tahuhu was instrumental in the England wobble which followed, bowling Sciver and Jones, and when Kerr had Sophia Dunkley caught cheaply down the leg side, England had gone from 109 for 1 to 140 for 5 and it fell to Knight and Brunt to drive the recovery. They did so with an 88-run stand which ended when Knight fell tamely on the penultimate ball of the 47th to a simple return catch for Kasperek.
