Liverpool and FSG willing to make bid to sign "top" £50m+ winger for Slot

Liverpool and FSG, after once again falling short of Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title last season, appear eager to sign a highly-rated attacker that could be the difference for the Reds in the next campaign.

Liverpool set to shape squad in Slot's image

After moving quickly to secure Arne Slot as their new manager, Liverpool have wasted no time entering the transfer market, looking to bring fresh faces to Merseyside.

The latest rumours out of Anfield have linked the Reds with a move for a number of young defenders. With Virgil van Dijk's long-term future at the club uncertain and Joel Matip set to leave this summer, Liverpool are looking to secure the future of their back line.

Leny Yoro is one name touted with a move to Merseyside with the LOSC Lille defender linked with a £59million move away from France this summer. Joining Yoro on FSG's wishlist is Italy star Riccardo Calafiori. The Bologna man has caught the attention of numerous clubs during Euro 2024 and could be in line for a £34million move to Liverpool this summer.

Reinforcements further up the pitch have also been linked with Juventus' Adrien Rabiot and German talent Joshua Kimmich both rumoured to be of interest to the Reds. With almost every area of the pitch a priority for Slot and co, it now appears that Liverpool are ready to launch a bid for a highly sought-after attacking player.

Liverpool willing to make Lookman offer

As first reported in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool are one of a number of clubs chasing Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman and the Reds are willing to make a bid close to €60m (£50.7m) for his services.

The outlet cites Chelsea and Manchester United as the other interested parties, meaning that the Reds could have a fight on their hands if they are to get the deal over the line.

Lookman has caught the eyes of numerous clubs this season thanks to his performances for the Bergamo outfit. The Nigerian winger contributed 17 goals and 10 assists over the course of the last campaign, most notably of which was a hat-trick in the Europa League final.

Lookman's performance in the final was something of a shock to many English fans who remember the Nigerian for his lacklustre spells with Everton, Leicester and Fulham. Despite this, the 26-year-old has undergone a rebirth in Italy and now looks like one of the continent's top wingers.

Speaking after Atalanta's 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen to clinch the Europa League trophy, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini explained how Lookman had developed over the last twelve months telling the press: "Lookman is a top player today, but he wasn’t before. He was strong but tended to light up in flashes and at other times would disappear from the game."

Regardless of his history in the Premier League, there is no doubt that this new version of Lookman could be an excellent addition to Slot's side.

Man City make first move to sign "brilliant" £70m star ahead of Liverpool

As Pep Guardiola looks to complete the near-impossible task of improving a side who have just won a fourth consecutive Premier League title, Manchester City have reportedly registered their interest in one particular Liverpool target.

Man City transfer news

Man City's main concern so far this summer has been the future of star players, with both Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson linked to the Saudi Pro League. After winning the treble in the 2022/23 campaign and following that up with a fourth Premier League title in a row, it could be argued that certain players believe their work in England is done, especially as City wait to find out the verdict on their 115 FFP charges.

That said, even as major consequences potentially await, the Citizens have been linked with several stars this summer, including the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. The latter would be a particularly impressive addition if De Bruyne does choose to leave for Saudi Arabia in the coming months. The Bayern Munich star enjoyed an excellent Euro 2024 and may yet make his mark at the Etihad alongside another reported target.

According to Football Insider in a report since relayed by Chronicle Live, Manchester City have registered their interest in Anthony Gordon as they join the race to sign the Newcastle United winger this summer.

Valued at a reported £70m by the Magpies, City join Liverpool in the battle for the Englishman, who seemingly had his head turned by the Reds before they were unable to reach an agreement with those at St James' Park.

Man City want to beat Man Utd to signing of "incredible" 16 y/o this summer

Of course, now that Newcastle have passed the PSR deadline unscathed, they're in a far healthier negotiating position. When the Premier League champions come calling, however, they usually get what they want – and things could be no different when it comes to Gordon.

"Brilliant" Gordon could thrive under Guardiola

Whether it's been Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane or, more recently, Jeremy Doku, wide players tend to leave their mark under Guardiola, and Gordon would be no different. He finally burst into life at Newcastle last season to earn such interest, which could leave him with quite the decision to make this summer. Whilst his reported £70m price tag isn't exactly cheap, money is rarely an obstacle for those at the Etihad.

Anthony Gordon.

Even before Gordon stepped up to become the player who scored 12 goals and assisted a further 11 in all competitions last season, Eddie Howe seemed to be well aware of the player that Newcastle had on their hands, praising his mentality.

The former Bournemouth boss said via Chronicle Live in April 2023: "He's in a much better place now. He used the international break to get his ankle right. He came back ahead of schedule so really pleased with that. He's got a brilliant mentality and I think he's a top player in the making."

A player who looks destined for the top, Gordon could be left with the biggest decision of his career so far this summer.

Everton now in talks to sign "fast" £25m ace who outscored DCL last season

As they edge closer to finally finding new owners, Everton have reportedly turned their attention towards potential reinforcements and a Premier League winger who outscored Dominic Calvert-Lewin last season.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees recently confirmed that a period of exclusivity has been granted to The Friedkin Group to progress talks over sealing a takeover from current owner Farhad Moshiri. That confirmation was then instantly followed up by more good news, with Everton also confirming the arrival of Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa in their first arrival of the summer transfer window.

Speaking for the first time since putting pen to paper, the young midfielder told EvertonTV: "I’m very pleased. Everton is an amazing club, a big club and I’m just really happy to join and I can’t wait to get started.

"It was a move that I didn’t want to pass by. I wanted to take the opportunity. When I spoke to Kevin [Thelwell], he told me more about the Club – its history, the future and where they see me playing. It made me feel very excited because there are big things coming, especially with the new stadium."

Even after Iroegbunam's, however, those at Goodison Park could be in for another positive in quite the week. According to Sky Sports' Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton are in talks to sign Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United this summer. The 19-year-old winger enjoyed an excellent spell on loan at Feyenoord last season and could now leave Newcastle on a permanent basis in a deal worth a reported €30m (£25m).

"Fast" Minteh can replace Calvert-Lewin's firepower

As Everton line up a deal to sign Newcastle's Minteh, the Magpies are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The forward's departure would instantly leave a gaping hole in Sean Dyche's frontline, but whilst Minteh is not an out and out forward, his firepower could be more than enough to help fill that hole this summer.

What's most impressive is that Minteh managed to finish in the ruthless fashion of a striker last season, whilst Calvert-Lewin was wasteful in a relatively poor campaign at Goodison Park.

What will make any deal for the winger that much sweeter for Everton is the fact that new Liverpool boss Arne Slot was full of praise for Minteh in charge of Feyenoord last season. Slot said via The Fatu Network: “He certainly doesn’t lack self-confidence. His willingness to give everything is enormous. When we see his statistics, it is really impressive. Minteh ran more sprint meters against Ajax in an hour than many players in the two games. He is incredibly fast. And he wants it so badly.”

Everton lodge enquiry over "world-class" Harrison upgrade

Everton have come perilously close to losing their ever-present Premier League status in the last couple of years, claiming a couple of last-day victories to preserve their record for another year.

However, in 2023/24, Sean Dyche’s side managed to finish 14 points clear of the relegation zone, despite receiving an eight-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules during the previous financial year.

It was a brilliant achievement from Dyche’s side and one that was thoroughly deserved with the Toffees boasting the best defensive record of any side in the division – bar the top three of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Despite the achievement given the circumstances, this summer remains crucial for the club if they are to build on the successful campaign, with new players needed to take Dyche’s side to the next level.

The club have already announced who will be departing Goodison Park this summer – namely Andre Gomes – with the Merseysiders reportedly identifying one player as a replacement for one of the outgoings.

Everton interested in German Bundesliga star

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Everton are one of five clubs to enquire about the availability of Heidenheim winger Jan-Niklas Beste ahead of the opening of the summer window.

The 25-year-old, who is also subject to interest from Villarreal, Fiorentina, Genoa and Galatasaray, enjoyed an excellent campaign in the Bundesliga during 2023/24, scoring eight and providing 11 assists for his teammates – a tally that was the second-highest in the league that season.

It was Heidenheim’s first time in Germany’s top flight since their reform back in 2007, with Beste one of the players who caught the eye in their staggering eighth-placed finish.

Whilst Plettenberg claims that the winger would like to stay in the Bundesliga, Dyche’s side must try and convince him to move to England, with the club getting a bargain at £8.5m and signing an upgrade on one player in the process.

Why Beste would be an upgrade on Jack Harrison

Attacker Jack Harrison joined Everton on a season-long loan last season after Leeds United’s relegation back to the Championship, with the 27-year-old managing a tally of three goals and three assists in his 29 Premier League outings.

Upon the completion of the 2023/24 campaign, the Toffees announced he would be returning to his parent club, but as a result of Daniel Farke’s side losing in the play-off final, it was reported that they would reconsider another loan move for the one-time England U21 international.

However, with the emergence of the Beste link, the club should avoid another tempora move for Harrison, with the German a clear upgrade on the 27-year-old former loanee.

Beste has averaged 2.8 progressive carries in the Bundesliga this season, also posting a tally of 0.4 assists per 90 – a figure that is four times higher than the Leeds United attacker.

It’s clear that from the table above, Beste is dominant in attacking areas, but, the 25-year-old has also excelled defensively, averaging 2.7 tackles per 90 – a tally that ranks him in the top 1% of all attackers in the Bundesliga for 2023/24.

The “world-class” talent, as described by UEFA B license coach Invert The Wing, has proved his worth in the Bundesliga in recent months and is more than deserving of an opportunity in England’s top flight.

Whilst they may face tough competition for signature, the Toffees must push hard to win the race for his signature if they are to build on what they achieved this season.

Arteta should drop Arsenal star after 5/10 display vs Man Utd

27 league wins. That's quite the tally, isn't it? Well, it's the most Arsenal have ever recorded in a single Premier League campaign.

Even better than the Invincibles you say? Yes. Even better than the double winners of 2001/02? Indeed.

Yet, it may not even be good enough to win a title. Should Mikel Arteta's merry Reds secure victory over Everton next Sunday then they will end the term on 89 points. It beggars belief that they could still finish second.

Alas, that is the eventuality that will befall them if Pep Guardiola's Manchester City juggernaut win their remaining games.

Arsenal will have to rely on a favour from their chums down the road. City face Tottenham away from home on Tuesday with that encounter likely the last plausible opportunity for them to drop points. They won't slip up against West Ham on the final day, surely? David Moyes and Co may as well be the Ibizan sun already.

Not winning the league will likely leave a sour taste in the mouths of supporters, but as Arteta put it in his post-match press conference on Sunday, we have witnessed history. Be proud of it, embrace it, lap it up, we are truly watching one of the greatest Arsenal sides in history; they now just need their crowning moment, their moment in the sun, to confirm it.

There have been many outstanding players in this Arsenal side. Bukayo Saka is chief among them on 20 goals but the defence deserve a shoutout; no team has kept more league clean sheets than the Gunners. Then there's summer signings Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, even Leandro Trossard, the scorer of the all-important goal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

You can't fault many players, although the display against United over the weekend was somewhat questionable. Who was to blame? Well, there was a disjointedness to central areas we haven't really seen very often. Rice was still productive, Martin Odegaard was perhaps a little off the pace but Thomas Partey did well to last as long as he did.

Thomas Partey's performance in numbers

This has been a funny old season for the former Atletico Madrid star. In the opening stages of the campaign he was fielded as a right-back. Yeah, remember that? Bizarre.

Anyway, the Ghanain picked up an injury in the first few months and it took until the Premier League run-in to re-establish himself in the side.

He has been absent for 26 matches in 2023/24 but has slowly started to remind fans of why he was such a well-valued player.

In the north London derby with Spurs, he was superb, notably succeeding with 93% of his passes, completing both of his dribble attempts and making two tackles.

Against United, however, he was wildly off the pace, very nearly costing Arsenal dearly in their bid to be crowned champions.

The central midfielder set the tone in the first half, gifting the ball away on a couple of occasions in dangerous areas. United could have punished the visitors, should have punished the visitors, but for some wasteful attacking plays.

Another nervy first-half moment came when Amad Diallo looked to have gone down under a clumsy challenge from Partey on the edge of the box. Fortunately, the Ivorian winger looked as though he merely stepped on the Arsenal man's foot. Still, he was a lucky boy. He didn't need to go to ground at all.

There was a further cause for concern in the second half. Partey tried to clear the ball but slipped inside his own penalty area. Thankfully, Arsenal were able to avoid danger.

On that evidence, you'd think the 30-year-old had come out of the game with poor statistics. He did not, however. The £45m signing still completed 93% of his passes, won both of his ground duels and only ceded possession on four occasions. However, the eye test told us all we needed to know.

Football.London's Kaya Kaynak handed him a 5/10 match rating, while the best summary came from CBS reporter James Benge who suggested that the midfielder was "playing like a relic from last season's Arsenal."

What he means by that is that there was an element of jeopardy to the side when he was in control of the ball. It's the same feeling supporters have felt with Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, and as such, why he has been benched in recent weeks.

Arteta has tried so hard this season to eradicate that, to get rid of all elements of risk. Yet, Partey demonstrated that very characteristic on Sunday. For the final game of the season, he should be given the boot, and with that, it could well be the last we see of him in Arsenal colours.

With just a year left on his deal, there are murmurs he will be shipped off permanently.

Jos Buttler 'needs to score runs or step aside' in Sri Lanka – Paul Farbrace

Paul Farbrace has admitted he is “worried” about Jos Buttler’s form, but feels England should stick with him as their keeper for the Test series in Sri Lanka. While Farbrace, England’s former assistant coach, regards Buttler as a “brilliant professional” and a “selfless cricketer” he accepts he “needs to score runs” in Sri Lanka or “step aside” from the Test side.ALSO READ: ‘I’m too old now to get picked on potential’ – ButtlerButtler has made just one Test century in his 41 Tests (73 innings) and, since the start of the Ashes, has made one half-century in 10 Tests and averaged 21.31. He hasn’t reached 30 in his most recent eight Test innings.”I am worried about Jos,” Farbrace said. “I think Jos should be England’s keeper and batter but he knows he can’t keep going long periods of time without making contributions.”What should a player of his ability be averaging after 40 games? It should be 40-plus. It is a lot lower than he would want it to be.”I would definitely keep him for the Sri Lanka series but he needs to score runs. If not, then he has to step aside.”Buttler does look set to start the Sri Lanka tour as England’s first-choice keeper. But the recall of Ben Foakes, player of the series when England won in Sri Lanka in late 2018, is sure to increase the pressure on Buttler’s position. And Farbrace feels Foakes has proved his ability and shouldn’t be judged too harshly on a disappointing 2019 Championship season (in which he averaged 26.14) as it may well have been provoked by his being dropped by England. Farbrace retains belief in Jonny Bairstow’s ability, too, though he accepts he “did not score enough runs.”ALSO READ: Foakes refreshed after winter off and ready for second chance“Foakes is England’s best keeper bar none,” Farbrace said. “He is a quality act with the bat. He showed he is up to it in Sri Lanka.”Being dropped in the West Indies had a massive effect on him during the English summer. It kicked the legs from underneath him.”Jonny Bairstow’s keeping improved enormously, too, but he got bowled too often and did not score enough runs. To get the best out of Jonny, he bats at No. 7 and keeps wicket. A lot of us think he can nail down No. 5, but maybe No. 7 suits him.”While Farbrace, now director of sport at Warwickshire, does not have the influence around the England camp he once did, his views remain intriguing. In his role with England, he was a steadfast supporter of Buttler. If even he is losing confidence, it suggests Buttler is running out of chances.Still, Farbrace remains a fan of Buttler and feels he has the talent and technique to make it in Test cricket. Addressing a roomful of young cricketers on the PCA’s recent rookie camp, Farbrace told them how the previous team management had urged Buttler to simply relax and enjoy the game. Then, Farbrace believes, he requires only greater game awareness to enjoy more consistent success.Jos Buttler has endured a tough run in Test cricket•Getty Images

“I was watching the IPL on television a couple of years ago,” Farbrace said. “Jos’ shoulder were hunched. So I phoned him and asked ‘are you enjoying it?’ He said ‘not really.'”So I said, ‘what would your mum – who coached him when he was a boy – have said?’ And he said ‘try to enjoy it.’ I said, ‘well, there you are then.’ He went on to make 50s in his next five games.”We always told him not to worry about the level of expectation. Just go in and play the game and remember why you play: because you enjoy it.”Jos is a very selfless cricketer. Everything about him as a character and person, you can see why everybody wants him in the team. He has that great knack of saying the right thing at the right time, he is a brilliant professional, he has got a lot of experience and is a team-orientated person like Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Moeen Ali. You want those people in your team.”There are times when he has gone in and played in a way that worked for the team. He got one of England’s best hundreds in recent times against India where he had more dot balls in a hundred than anyone else for ten years [his leave percentage of 24 was actually the highest of England’s most recent 30 Test centuries]. It was a rearguard action at Trent Bridge.”I think it is being able to understand where the game is at and what he needs to do. That is what the best players can do. They work out the situation and play accordingly. That is what Root, Cook and Stokes can do.”I don’t think it is a technique issue. He knows he has the defence. It is a case of trusting that defence and being clear on the situation of the game and playing accordingly. He has to work out what the game needs from him at the given moment. It is what Stokes has done brilliantly.”Over the last 18 months he has worked out how he needs to play for the current situation. The more he does it, the more confidence he has. All Jos is lacking is consistency of being able to bat according to the situation.”England fly to Sri Lanka on Monday and begin their tour with a three-day match against a Board President’s XI starting on Saturday.
