Hardik Pandya set for T20I return against South Africa; Shubman Gill still unlikely

The allrounder made a successful comeback for Baroda with a match-wining performance on Tuesday

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Dec-2025Hardik Pandya is set to make a comeback to T20Is when India’s selectors pick the squad for the five-match series against South Africa on Wednesday. There are doubts about the availability of Shubman Gill, India’s T20I vice-captain.The Gill question is likely to be top of the agenda for the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel when they meet in Raipur, where India play South Africa in the second ODI.In Gill’s likely absence, Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the possible contenders to open the innings with Abhishek Sharma. While Samson was in the recent T20I squad that toured Australia, he played only two out of the five matches and batted only once – at No. 3. Jaiswal was not part of that squad.Gill had hurt his neck while batting in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, where he retired hurt and played no further part in the match. He missed the second Test too – which India lost to concede the series 2-0 – and the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa as well.It is understood that Gill’s injury involves a pinched nerve, and as per the initial timeline drawn up by BCCI medical staff, he would need to rest for a minimum of five weeks before resuming training. He arrived at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday to continue his rehab. The selectors are also likely to consider Riyan Parag for a slot in the 15-member squad. Parag last played for India in a T20I series against Bangladesh in 2024 and is currently leading Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Both the selectors and the Indian think tank will be happy about Hardik’s successful return – he led Baroda to a victory against Punjab on Tuesday in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – having successfully recovered from the left quadricep injury he suffered during the Asia Cup in September. Hardik took 1 for 52 in four overs and scored a match-winning 77 not out in his first competitive game in more than two months. He had missed the five-match T20I series in Australia in October-November, which India won 2-1 with two washouts. The T20I series against South Africa begins on December 9 in Cuttack – after the ODI series ends on December 6 – followed by games in New Chandigarh (December 11), Dharamsala (December 14), Lucknow (December 17) and Ahmedabad (December 19).India, captained by Suryakumar Yadav, are currently the top-ranked T20I team, while South Africa are in fifth place.

£40m West Ham flop is the biggest waste of money since Scamacca & Haller

West Ham United have not always had the best of luck when it comes to the transfer market.

Sure, they’ve made some stellar signings over the years, like Jarrod Bowen, but they’ve also made their fair share of terrible additions to the team.

One man who certainly didn’t help the club in this regard is former technical director Tim Steidten, who oversaw the signing of a handful of poor players and fell out with David Moyes.

In fact, one of his worst purchases could even be described as being the club’s most significant waste of money since Gianluca Scamacca and Sébastien Haller.

Scamacca & Haller's West Ham careers

While there have been plenty of terrible West Ham signings over the years, two recent ones that tend to stick out in most fans’ minds are Scamacca and Haller.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The former joined the club from Serie A side Sassuolo for around £30.5m in the summer of 2022, and did so off the back of a brilliant season in Italy, in which he scored 16 goals and provided one assist in 38 games.

It was safe to say that there was a level of expectation that he’d be able to hit the ground running in East London, but unfortunately, that could not have been further from what actually happened.

In all, the Italian only lasted a season, scoring a paltry eight goals in 27 appearances before returning to Italy amid claims he was homesick.

What made the whole move even more of a “disappointment,” per The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, is that even his eight goals were underwhelming, with just two in the Premier League.

It was a situation that felt all too familiar to Haller’s time at the club just a couple of years earlier.

The Ivorian international joined the Irons for a club record fee of £45m in the summer of 2019, and off the back of a season in which he scored 20 goals and provided 12 assists in 41 games for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Unfortunately, he too lost his shooting boots upon his arrival in East London, and over the next season and a half, he scored just 14 goals and provided two assists in 54 games, which isn’t anywhere near good enough for a record signing.

The bad news keeps on coming for West Ham, though, as while they were able to get rid of both strikers, they now have another player in the squad who has arguably been the biggest waste of money for the club since both of them.

West Ham's biggest waste of money since Scamacca and Haller

Unfortunately for West Ham, there are probably a few players who could fit this description, but as things stand, it is hard to look past Max Kilman.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star joined the club for a massive £40m last summer.

Now, there have been glimpses of quality here and there since then, but that is all there has been, and for such an expensive signing, that simply isn’t good enough.

Moreover, while the decent performances have been few and far between, the worrying ones have been far more regular, and seemingly only more so over the last couple of months.

For example, one content creator labelled his performance against Brentford as “shocking,” and former manager Gary O’Neil explained his most significant problem is that he likes to “switch off” during games.

It’s a criticism that’s easy to believe, as he looked utterly lost for the Bees’ opening goal, and didn’t get any better as the game went on.

Moreover, his statistics from the following game away to Leeds United do not make for pretty reading either.

In his 94 minutes on the pitch, the Englishman didn’t win a single tackle, nor make an interception, he lost 100% of his ground duels, gave away two fouls, was accurate in just 33% of his long balls, lost the ball eight times and completed just 88% of passes.

Ultimately, there are a lot of problems at West Ham at the moment, and while it’s harsh to single out players, Kilman is one of the big ones.

"Incredible" manager now leading contender to replace Potter at West Ham

A manager who Jurgen Klopp once described as “incredible” is now the leading contender to replace Graham Potter at West Ham United.

Potter under serious pressure after Crystal Palace defeat

Potter would’ve been hoping the 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest could be a turning point in the season, but there has been a return to the mean since the end of the international break, with West Ham suffering defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.

Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed that the West Ham hierarchy have started looking at new managers, saying: “Internal talks are taking place with eventual replacements being assessed. Decision could follow soon.”

A number of managers with Premier League experience have been identified as potential targets, including Gary O’Neil, Slaven Bilic, and Sean Dyche, but it has since emerged that a different manager is now the frontrunner for the job.

ByDominic Lund Sep 21, 2025

That is according to a report from The Mirror, who reveal that West Ham are seriously considering parting ways with Potter, following their terrible start to the Premier League season, collecting just three points from their opening five games.

Nuno Espirito Santo is named as the leading contender to replace Potter, with the former Nottingham Forest boss being dismissed by Evangelos Marinakis earlier this month, despite leading the Tricky Trees to Europe for the first time in 30 years.

The upcoming fixture against Everton is likely to be crucial in deciding Potter’s future, with the Toffees set to travel to the London Stadium next Monday night.

"Incredible" Nuno could be major upgrade on Potter

Potter has experienced success in the Premier League in the past, impressing enough at Brighton & Hove Albion to get the Chelsea job, but the 50-year-old’s performance in his last two roles leaves a lot to be desired.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, the Englishman averaged just 1.42 points per match, lasting less than seven months, before going on to struggle considerably at West Ham, receiving widespread criticism from the fans after the recent defeat against Spurs.

Nuno, on the other hand, is vastly more experienced in the Premier League, with Klopp once praising the Portuguese manager for the work he did at Wolverhampton Wanderers, saying: “Nuno’s doing an incredible job. They are a talented team, the quality is big. It’s really rare, but apart from two or three games they played exactly the same three players in the last line the whole year, that’s unbelievable.”

The Sao Tome-born manager, who favours a 4-2-3-1 system, subsequently went on to be a success at Forest, averaging 1.48 points per match and guiding the Tricky Trees to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

West Ham have spent a number of seasons in Europe in recent times, winning the UEFA Conference League in 2023, and there are clear indications Nuno could be capable of bringing European nights back to the London Stadium.

Real Madrid clash could be turning point for Juventus season amid poor form and Igor Tudor sacking rumours as ex-Bianconeri star sees new 'spirit and chemistry'

Former Juventus defender Danilo believes the club’s clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday could serve as the catalyst for the Bianconeri to turn their season around. Currently sitting seventh in the Serie A table and still winless in the Champions League, Juventus find themselves in a difficult spell. However, Danilo noted that there is a growing chemistry within the squad that hadn’t been seen before, and urged patience as the team continues to develop.

  • Juventus winless in six games after brilliant start

Juventus suffered their first loss of the season against Como, inspired by a brilliant individual performance from the 2024-25 Serie A Young Player of the Season, Nico Paz. The Argentine midfielder’s precise cross to the far post was met by defender Marc-Oliver Kempf, who tapped it home in the third minute to give Como an early lead. Despite Juventus goalkeeper Michele De Gregorio making several key saves, Paz sealed the win in the 79th minute with a curling strike beyond De Gregorio’s reach to make it 2-0.

The defeat saw Juventus slip to seventh place in the Serie A table after what had been a strong start to the campaign with three consecutive wins, including a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Inter in the Derby d’Italia. Since then, however, the Bianconeri have gone six games without a win, drawing five times against Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Villarreal Atalanta and Hellas Verona.

However, former Juventus defender Danilo believes the match against Real Madrid could serve as a springboard for the Bianconeri to turn their season around.

  • Real Madrid clash could spark change for struggling side

In an interview with , Danilo called for unity and urged Juventus to view their upcoming match against Real Madrid as an opportunity to turn things around. He said: “In these moments, we need unity; everyone needs to help each other. Now there's the Champions League, a different story, and the match against Madrid could be an opportunity. Juventus never gives up in difficult times.”

While Danilo admitted he is not aware of the day-to-day dynamics within the squad, he noted that there appears to be greater chemistry between the players and the coach compared to previous seasons. “I'm not involved in the day-to-day dynamics, and giving an opinion on the spot would be disrespectful to the group, the coach, and the club. From the outside, however, it seems to me that compared to a year ago, the spirit is different, the attitude different: there's a chemistry between the players and the coach that wasn't there before.”

Acknowledging the challenge of facing Real Madrid, Danilo emphasized that getting a positive result at the Bernabeu could serve as a turning point for Juventus. “The Bernabeu is a very important test; Madrid are clearly in a much better moment, top of La Liga, six points in the Champions League, but if Juve get a result, and they can, it could be the match that changes the season.”

Danilo pleads for more time to be given to Tudor

Igor Tudor was appointed interim coach of Juventus last season following the sacking of Thiago Motta. After unsuccessful attempts to bring in Gian Piero Gasperini or Antonio Conte, Juventus confirmed Tudor as the permanent head coach. However, with results currently poor, Tudor has come under mounting pressure. While the club have publicly backed him, they have quietly explored two other managerial options as potential replacements. Sacking Tudor and appointing a new coach could prove difficult, as Juventus are still paying Motta, and adding a third coach to the payroll could further complicate the club’s ongoing issues with UEFA Financial Fair Play compliance.

Danilo stressed the importance of patience and reaffirmed his trust in Tudor. “Patience is needed. They've changed several players, and the transfer window has been delayed, which has affected our preparations. It won't be an easy year for Juve, but I have faith in Tudor.”

He also drew a comparison with Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, suggesting that even the most promising managers face early challenges in conveying their ideas. “Xabi Alonso has a modern, different vision of football, and he's also struggling to convey it to his players. But obviously, it's much easier to work when the results come in, and we always end up back there.”

Juventus' Champions League test and Mbappe challenge

Juventus and Tudor will look to strengthen a defence that has conceded 10 goals in their last six games. In attack, the team has managed just eight goals over the same period and will look to improve. However, their biggest challenge will be containing Kylian Mbappe, who has scored five goals in his last two matches.

West Ham source shares potentially imminent Graham Potter sack timeline

West Ham United manager Graham Potter could be sacked by the Hammers very shortly, on one condition, with a potential timeline shared by one media source.

Graham Potter under growing pressure in east London

This time last year, David Moyes’ replacement, Julen Lopetegui, was in a very similar situation to Potter as critics and supporters alike called for the Spaniard to be axed following a poor start to 2024/2025.

Now, his successor, Potter, is facing the same pressure. Under the former Chelsea boss, West Ham have recorded their second-worst win percentage since the Premier League’s inception, with Avram Grant’s relegated side from 2010/2011 coming as the only Hammers team to fare worse.

The east Londoners have also leaked goals left, right and centre — conceding more than any other top-flight outfit thus far — with Potter’s West Ham also looking extremely vulnerable when it comes to set pieces.

Potter did give himself some breathing room with an impressive 3-0 win away to Nottingham Forest, which turned out to be Nuno Espírito Santo’s final game in charge, and the Portuguese is now being linked to the West Ham job after leaving the City Ground.

As well as Nuno, ex-West Ham player Frank Lampard has been mentioned as a candidate to replace Potter, with other reports suggesting Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna was in attendance at the London Stadium during their 3-0 derby defeat to Spurs.

However, any hope of a blockbuster move for big-name serial winner José Mourinho is being quashed by the special one’s imminent move to Benfica, so if West Ham are to sack Potter, they’ll need to decide quickly and avoid the other best-possible free agents being snapped up by other clubs.

Taking that into account, West Ham chair David Sullivan is apparently keen to avoid another Lopetegui-style saga, amid a major concern he has behind-the-scenes.

When West Ham could sack Graham Potter and it may be imminent

That is according to Hammers News, who shared an update on Potter’s future via one of their sources.

West Ham United managerGrahamPotterbefore the match

The informant, as quoted by HN, reveals that West Ham could sack Potter if they lose to Crystal Palace this weekend.

The 50-year-old’s unceremonious departure would bring his stock down even further after he was sacked by Chelsea, with Potter’s stellar days growing Brighton into an established Premier League side far behind the tactician.

It would be hard to envisage Potter getting another immediate big job if he’s given a P45 after Saturday, but as we’ve seen with ex-West Ham hero Moyes, you can always bounce back in the long-term.

Arsenal talks for Piero Hincapie take late transfer twist amid "concerns"

Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie before the deadline on Monday, but a deal may not be as straightforward as that after all.

The Ecuador international is poised to come in as a direct replacement for Jakub Kiwior, who has now sealed a loan move to FC Porto ahead of a permanent switch in 2026.

Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta are looking to both grant Kiwior’s wish for more game time elsewhere, whilst also ensuring that the Gunners are not left too exposed defensively in case one of William Saliba or Gabrial Magalhaes succumbs to injury at some point this season – which is a distinct possibility.

Hincapie played a key role under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen last term and was a member of their Bundesliga-winning side in 2023/2024 – a team that also went unbeaten all campaign until their loss to Atalanta in the Europa League final.

The 23-year-old also offers versatility and can play in multiple defensive roles, with Arsenal believed to be closing in on a loan deal which includes an obligation to buy next year – similarly to Kiwior.

The Premier League title hopefuls appear determined to get Hincapie over the line with time running out, but according to BBC journalist Sami Mokbel, they face a late roadblock.

Arsenal talks for Piero Hincapie take late transfer twist

According to Mokbel, due to “concerns” over UEFA’s squad coast ratio rule, Arsenal are working to sell players before finalising a deal for the defender.

In his piece for the BBC, Mokbel also reports that a successful move for Hincapie “hinges” on Berta getting players out of the door with Kiwior.

Of the names up for grabs at Arsenal, it is believed Reiss Nelson, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Fabio Vieira could all leave the Emirates before Monday’s deadline.

Zinchenko has attracted interest from Italy and Turkey, while Stuttgart were in talks for Vieira and Fulham have approached for Nelson – but the latter want to sign him on a straight loan and are reluctant to agree to any permanent deal conditions (BBC).
