I don't know what pressure means – Malinga

Lasith Malinga had arrived in New Zealand with a strapped-up ankle and a bum knee. He has not bowled a delivery in competitive cricket since September. Even before the hiatus, he had been some way from his best; low on pace and wayward, with a stomach bulging out ahead of him.All this would make for a low-key return, you would think, but Malinga has earned a reputation as Sri Lanka’s major tournament performer. The gold tinge in his hair rejuvenates ahead of each big event. The yorkers begin to fly fast and free, stumps wrecked, hat-tricks collected, toes bruised, and that aeroplane celebration dusted off with unusual intensity. On Saturday, Gary Ballance labeled Malinga “probably the best death bowler there has ever been”, and the man himself is meeting the attention with his usual bluster. Saddled now with transforming the Sri Lankan attack’s fortunes in New Zealand, Malinga said the expectations on him are nothing new.”I don’t know what pressure means,” he said. “I’m always used to pressure situations, so I wouldn’t even know what pressure is to talk about it. I want to have a free mindset and do what I can do. Throughout my career I haven’t been looking out where I’m playing or what are the conditions. We know it will be bouncy here, but I always trust my skill.”Malinga’s absence from international cricket had been forced by a long-term ankle complaint that had deteriorated to the point of requiring surgery. He had suffered a setback in his rehabilitation in December, but has gradually been increasing his bowling workload through January. Every step is still painful, Malinga said, but he is expected to be fully fit for the warm-up matches, against South Africa and Zimbabwe, and for the curtain-raiser against New Zealand on February 14.”In the last few days, I’ve been bowling with my full run up, and I feel like I have good rhythm. I don’t know about the pace, so we’ll find that out in the matches. Before the World Cup, I have to use these two warm-up matches to the maximum.”I haven’t had much skills preparation in the last few months, but I always do my mental preparation. I watched all my footage in the last two months and figured out what I needed to do.”Sri Lanka’s major-tournament fortunes have fluctuated with Malinga’s, to some extent, but on this occasion, his team-mates are quick to suggest they have other match winners in their attack too. Kumar Sangakkara said Rangana Herath was the best current spinner, while captain Angelo Mathews believed Sri Lanka were not totally reliant on Malinga.”You can’t write off the rest of the bowlers that we have,” Mathews said. “We’ve got fairly experienced bowlers, but Lasith is the X-factor. It’s just that in a one-off game, the others can also come into the party. We all expect Lasith to do well but I’m pretty sure with the amount of talent that we’ve got in the side, anyone can do the job for us.”Mahela Jayawardene took a similar view, emphasising the threat of the collective, but added that Malinga’s return boosted the know-how within the attack. Malinga had been the architect of the wide-yorker plan that brought Sri Lanka success in the World T20 final last year.”The others will feed off him,” Jayawardene said. “You saw in the World T20 how his ideas, and his management of the bowling unit in that situation was fantastic. Because of his experience, his presence will give us that extra 10 per cent to win the matches we had been losing. We’re a small nation, so it’s important we get everyone on the park.”Sri Lanka’s approach to the World Cup has been marred somewhat by a 2-4 loss to New Zealand. Mathews said his team had “found ways to lose matches rather than win them” in that series, and called for more consistency in all departments, but was unperturbed by the lowered expectations of his side.”We’re happy to walk into the World Cup as underdogs. No one really expects us to win.”

Gloucestershire end 28-year wait for New Road win

ScorecardChris Dent’s half-century saw Gloucestershire on their way to victory•Getty Images

A brilliant innings by former Minor Counties player Richard Oliver failed to prevent Worcestershire’s first County Championship defeat of the season as Gloucestershire registered their first victory at New Road since 1986.Oliver, the 24-year-old left hander, made a career-best 179 in four and a half hours enabled the Division Two leaders to wipe out a deficit of 184, but the West Country team were hardly challenged by a target of 177 and cruised home by seven wickets.Paceman Liam Norwell broke Worcestershire’s resistance in a new-ball spell of 4 for 16 and opener Chris Dent led the victory rush with his first half-century in three months after taking the key wicket of Oliver in his role as occasional left-arm spinner. Will Tavare made 33 in an opening stand of 67 before falling lbw to Joe Leach and when Dent was out for 51, driving Shaaiq Choudhry’s fourth ball straight to mid-off, Alex Gidman followed his first-innings century with an unbeaten 45 from 43 balls. Leach claimed his 30th wicket of the season when Gareth Roderick was caught behind for 25 but this was only a blip as Gloucestershire comfortably completed their third win of the season. The visitors made the running from the outset in dismissing Worcestershire before tea on the first day and as well as Oliver played, there was to be no way back. They are still favourites for promotion but their lead could be significantly trimmed if their closest rivals, Surrey and Hampshire, close out victories on Monday. It was unfortunate for Oliver that the latest chapter in a remarkable rise to a county contract should have coincided with one of the team’s least effective displays of the season. Originally drafted in from Shropshire in April because of an injury, he scored hundreds in successive innings for the second XI and in May he was in the county team in the run to the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-finals.A Championship debut arrived in June and having scored at least one half-century in each of four matches, he has accumulated 504 runs in his first eight innings in first-class cricket. Dedicated to the sport as an annual traveller to Australia to play for Melbourne club Geelong, he is refreshingly uncomplicated in his approach. If the ball is there to be hit, then more than often than not it is – and with some force.Gloucestershire’s bowlers will bear testimony to this, having seen Oliver plundering his first 50 in 41 balls and the third in 40. That the middle one was twice as long indicated a period of circumspection in approaching a maiden hundred. In all he hit 23 fours and one six, putting Worcestershire in front in the over he reached three figures. For much of his innings he was accompanied by Alexei Kervezee in Worcestershire’s highest partnership for any wicket this season. They put on 215 in 51 overs before Gloucestershire made a decisive breakthrough with their spinners. Kervezee had made 78 with a six and 10 fours when he tickled a catch to Gareth Roderick to give offspinner Mark Craig a first Championship wicket and in his next over the New Zealander claimed a second with Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s top edged to midwicket.Oliver was fifth out at 296, caught behind off Dent, and the seamers did the rest as the last five wickets disappeared for 39 from the time the new ball was taken. Of the lower order only Choudhry, with 30, seriously troubled Gloucestershire until caught at second slip off David Payne.Stand-in captain Gidman was proud to be the first man to lead Gloucestershire to a Championship victory at New Road in 28 years. “It’s a lovely place to play and I’ve been a few times but never won,” he said. “To have done that was really enjoyable. It was a challenging wicket but a good cricket wicket and we probably applied ourselves a little bit better over three days.”We had the best of the conditions. On the first day I didn’t think we bowled as well as we could but the boys kept going really hard.”Worcestershire’s assistant coach Matt Mason was delighted with Oliver’s impressive century. “He’s a breath of fresh air,” he said. “His approach to his cricket is amazing and he’s very positive. He’s fearless, that’s the way we describe him. It’s great for the people who are here watching as there’s never a dull moment when he’s at the crease.”He’s different as well. He doesn’t play an orthodox game and I think there’s room for people like that in any first class cricket team. His confidence and his belief that he belongs here is growing all the time.”

Pakistan players set for pay hike

ESPNcricinfo staff14-May-2014Pakistan’s centrally contracted players will now get a 25% hike in their monthly retainers, the PCB announced on Wednesday. This is in addition to hikes of 25% in Test match fee and 10% for ODIs.However, the board is yet to finalise the list of contracted players in all categories. The list will be released after the conclusion of the ongoing camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. The revised salaries come into effect from January 1, 2014. The PCB will also release up to 50% of the players’ remunerations for those who have represented Pakistan in international matches since January 2014.The system of bonuses has also been revised to incentivise outstanding individual performances and series wins.

Neesham and Latham in Test squad

The uncapped allrounder Jimmy Neesham and batsman Tom Latham have been added to New Zealand’s squad for the second Test against India starting in Wellington on Friday

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2014The uncapped allrounder Jimmy Neesham and batsman Tom Latham have been added to New Zealand’s squad for the second Test against India starting in Wellington on Friday. The chances of New Zealand making a change after their 40-run victory in the first Test in Auckland may appear slim but alterations to the squad were required after Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell were both unavailable for selection. Both men have been fined by New Zealand Cricket for misconduct after they were out drinking until 3am on the first morning of the Auckland Test.Neither Ryder nor Bracewell were considered for the squad for the second Test due to their off-field behaviour. Neesham has been brought in as a replacement for Bracewell, while Latham has taken the place of Ryder as cover for Ross Taylor, who is awaiting the birth of his second child. If the baby is not born before the match starts, Latham will make his debut so Taylor can sit out.”Tom’s an incredibly exciting prospect and is constantly pushing for selection,” Bruce Edgar, the general manager of national selection, said. “If called upon, we’re confident that he’ll take the opportunity with both hands.”Latham, 21, has played 13 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20s for his country but is yet to be called upon in Test cricket. Neesham, 23, has played 11 ODIs and five T20s for New Zealand and the selectors believe that although he is not necessarily a like-for-like replacement for Bracewell, he offers plenty with both bat and ball.”We see Jimmy as a genuine all-rounder who can play a number of roles for us. His form with both bat and ball in the Plunket Shield this season speaks for itself,” Edgar said. “We’ve been able to keep a settled side recently and strung together some successful results along the way. We hope to keep that going, but are well aware India will come back at us hard.”New Zealand squad Peter Fulton, Hamish Rutherford, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum (capt), Corey Anderson, BJ Watling (wk), Tom Latham, Jimmy Neesham, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.

Australia all talk, but can they back it up?

Match facts

November 21-25, Gabba, Brisbane

George Dobell and Jarrod Kimber talk about the run up to the first Test

Big Picture

Three months ago – is that all? – England stood on a dais at The Oval and were presented with the Ashes urn amid fading light and fireworks. Under normal circumstances, they would have had 18 months to revel in their success before defending the prize, but 2013 is anything but a typical Ashes year. The presence of the World Cup in Australia on next summer’s calendar meant a clash with the Ashes, and a rescheduling was required. As a result, Michael Clarke and his men have an almost immediate chance to redeem themselves, and there is a sense of optimism among Australian fans.It is tempting to view that enthusiasm as misplaced, given Australia’s 3-0 loss in England and the yawning gap in experience between the players of both sides. Make no mistake, England win this series, for they are more settled, more experienced and more familiar with the winning feeling. Yes, Australia were on top in several Tests in England this year, but the fact that they let those winning positions slip is not an encouraging sign. Australia have not won a Test since Michael Hussey’s retirement in January, and since the start of the last Australian summer, the only team they have beaten in a Test is Sri Lanka. That the squad chosen for the Gabba Test was described by many observers as “stable” said more about Australia’s shambolic year than anything else. George Bailey is uncapped, Shane Watson is an accidental No.3 due only to his hundred there at The Oval, Mitchell Johnson was not even on the Ashes tour to England, Darren Lehmann has been coach for less than six months. Only four of the XI from last summer’s opening Gabba Test against South Africa – Clarke, David Warner, Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon – are in this team. Stability is relative.England are not immune to changes, including the Michael Carberry-Joe Root switch, but it is worth noting that 11 members of their Ashes squad played in their 2010-11 triumph in Australia. The conditions are not so foreign to England as they once might have been. At the Gabba last time, England piled up 1 for 517 in their second innings. In the lead-up to the first Test, Warner said he felt England might fear Australia given the way they played at times in England this year. It’s easy to talk the talk, now Australia must walk the walk.

Form guide

England: DWDWW
Australia: DLDLL

Players to watch

For all the talk from within the Australian camp that Mitchell Johnson could win them the series, the fact is that he wouldn’t have been part of this team but for injuries to James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc and perhaps Jackson Bird. It is true that Johnson made several Indian batsmen jump with his pace and bounce during the recent ODIs and he does seem to be bowling quicker than ever, but sustaining that and maintaining accuracy through five days of a Test match is a vastly different challenge. Australia’s best bet is to use Johnson in short, sharp spells. One of the most encouraging things for England at home this year was that they won the Ashes comfortably without Alastair Cook reaching anything close to his best form. His top score in the series was 62, but his memories of the last series in Australia are exceptionally pleasing – he made three centuries including an unbeaten 235 in the opener at the Gabba. Regardless of the lack of top-class bowling England have faced in their warm-ups, his 154 against Australia A at Bellerive Oval and his 81 in Sydney last week are also positive signs.Mitchell Johnson has been talked up by the Australians, but he wouldn’t have even been in the side if the frontline bowlers had been fit•Getty Images

Team news

Australia have chosen a 12-man squad, meaning their only decision is whether to include the allrounder James Faulkner as an extra bowling option. Shane Watson is expected to bowl only a small amount if at all due to his troublesome hamstring, which could encourage the selectors to take in an extra bowler, but the more likely scenario is three fast men, one spinner and George Bailey to make his debut at No.6.Australia (probable) 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steven Smith, 6 George Bailey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Nathan Lyon. The main change from the England side that won at home this year is the inclusion of Michael Carberry at the top of the order to open with Alastair Cook, which was also allowed Joe Root to slide down to No.6, the position occupied by Jonny Bairstow for much of the home series. Matt Prior suffered a calf tear during the warm-up match in Hobart and remains in doubt, and Bairstow would keep wicket if Prior is ruled out. The other key decision is on which fast bowler will join James Anderson and Stuart Broad, and Chris Tremlett may have the edge over Boyd Rankin and Steven Finn.England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Michael Carberry, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Joe Root, 7 Matt Prior / Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 James Anderson.

Pitch and conditions

The Gabba pitch is renowned for offering some pace and movement early, before flattening out for the batsmen, and this year should be no different. The forecast for Thursday is mostly sunny and 30C, but all four remaining days show the chance of a storm and showers. However, the drainage is so good at the Gabba that provided the covers are put on quickly, play can usually resume soon after the weather clears.

Stats and trivia

  • Kevin Pietersen will become the 10th man to reach the milestone of 100 Tests for England
  • Australia have not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988-89
  • This will be Ryan Harris’ first Test match at his adopted home ground
  • Since Richard Hadlee’s famous 9 for 52 in 1985-86, the best innings figures by a visiting bowler at the Gabba were Steven Finn’s 6 for 125 on the last Ashes tour, but he appears unlikely to play at the venue this time

Quotes

“Australia has a proud record at the Gabba. This is a record we want to enhance … The extra pace and bounce of the Gabba makes for exciting cricket.”
“We all know that despite all the hype beforehand, what happens in the lead-up is irrelevant. A lot of words are said, a lot of mind games supposedly happen, but come Thursday morning with the crowd behind them, that’s when it counts.”

Lancashire to rebuild Old Trafford stands

Just weeks after their redeveloped ground was unveiled during the Investec Ashes series, Lancashire are to dismantle and rebuild large parts of two new stands at Old Trafford

Just weeks after their redeveloped ground was unveiled during the Investec Ashes series, Lancashire are to dismantle and rebuild large parts of two new stands at Old Trafford.Work to dismantle the top tiers of the new southeast and southwest stands, either side of the new player and media facilities at the Brian Statham End, will begin as soon as the current County Championship match against Leicestershire is over. While the stands were being built, in 2012, one of the contractors, Sabre Structures Ltd, went into administration. That caused a delay that could have rendered the stands unfinished ahead of the 2013 season, so the club installed support columns as an intermediate measure to allow the stands to be used and enable the ground to host the international cricket that is so vital to its future. These support columns resulted in an obstructed view for some spectators, however, and were always viewed as a temporary solution. Now, aiming to find a longer-term fix, the club will strengthen the tiers with the installation of additional structural steel which will, in turn, allow the removal of the support columns.Work was also held up in March 2012, when one of the steel beams supporting the upper tier of seating twisted out of place, but the club insist that was an isolated incident and not relevant to the installation of the support columns.ESPNcricinfo understands that Lancashire will not be financially liable for the extra work – the cost will be met by the construction company involved – and the club are confident it will be completed in advance of the 2014 season. The club also state that the work has been scheduled for six months.Lancashire came close to having to abandon the ground, as a legal dispute threatened the £44m redevelopment, but the unveiling of new Pavilion in June preceded Test cricket’s return to Manchester for the first time since 2010.
