Finn and Murtagh leave Sussex struggling

ScorecardSteven Finn took three wickets in front of national selector Geoff Miller•Getty Images

Steven Finn made enough of a mark on the first day of this contest to indicate he is ready, willing and able should England decide to rest a fast bowler or two and make changes ahead of next week’s final Test against West Indies. But if Middlesex go on to win this game then the new-ball burst of Tim Murtagh may prove to have been the crucial element.Sussex, with barely time to draw breath following Monday’s Championship loss to Nottinghamshire, were staggering horribly inside the first hour after winning what appeared to be a good toss on a bright, sunny morning. Murtagh, hitting the seam instantly while Finn searched for his radar following a week on international 12th man duty, soon had them 16 for 3.The visitors recovered pretty well, with 70s from both Ed Joyce and Ben Brown and a more than useful 38 by Naved Arif, to finish in touching distance of 250, but Middlesex look to have the edge.Murtagh is one of those too often unsung county stars – a bowler who rarely delivers a bad spell but does not often pick up a stack of wickets. And, when he does, a ‘bigger’ name usually puts him in the shade.Today, understandably, most eyes – including, presumably, those of watching national selector Geoff Miller – were on Finn. And the big lad could not be faulted for effort, pace or menace once he found his range. Finn finished the day with 3 for 65 from 23 overs but, quite properly, Murtagh outdid him with 4 for 41 from 20.The way this match began we might easily have been back in April when wickets were tumbling here, there and just about everywhere and, horror of horrors, Surrey boss Chris Adams was being highly critical of the Lord’s pitch used for his side’s nerve-tingling three-run defeat. We might have been back in April, but we were not.For a start, there was real warmth coming from this morning’s sun. And, regardless of what may or may not have happened at HQ a month or so ago, the five wickets which Sussex lost before lunch, can be put down to a mix of skilful new-ball bowling, poor shot selection and leaden-footed stroke-play.Certainly, Sussex were happy enough to bat first after winning the toss – especially their bowlers, most probably. Given that the domestic season starts in early April and runs through to mid-September, there seems no real excuse for any team to have to play on nine out of 10 days, starting with a day-night game. They looked to be in a bit of a trance, for sure, although the in-form Chris Nash could argue that he would do well to survive the beauty he received, second ball up, from Murtagh whenever or wherever he received it. Lifting and leaving the right-handed Nash late, it brushed the outside edge. That set the tone, really. While Finn had a bit of trouble with his direction early on, Murtagh regularly hit the seam and drilled a challenging line on or just outside off stump. Add some less than sparkling batting – Mike Yardy played a horrible shot away from his body before Luke Wright drove ambitiously without much foot movement – and Sussex were in all sorts of bother at 66 for 5 after 90 minutes or so.Thanks to opener Joyce, playing against his old county, and Brown, meltdown was averted with a stand of 81. But both eventually fell to Finn (Joyce caught down the leg-side and Brown edging a fast, full delivery to slip) and it needed Arif’s contribution to prevent Sussex from falling away again. As always, it will be a lot easier to judge how much of a foothold the visitors have given themselves once both teams have batted once, but – for now – they are just about hanging in there.

Porterfield gives Warwickshire hope

If Somerset go on to win this game, Jim Troughton will surely rue a remarkable, uncharacteristic error in the field. Troughton, the Warwickshire captain and a fielder of some repute, spurned a simple catch at mid off that allowed Somerset, for perhaps the first time in the match, to seize the initiative. It was the sort of chance that Monty Panesar might have taken with one hand behind his back. While balancing on a ball. Blindfolded. In the dark.Buttler was on just seven at the time and his partnership with Nick Compton worth 12. Mistiming a drive off Keith Barker, Barker saw the ball go straight to Troughton at groin height only for the fielder to inexplicably put it down. The pair subsequently extended their sixth-wicket partnership to 167 with Buttler contributing a fluent 93. It could prove the turning point of this game. Not that Warwickshire are out of it yet. Set 259 to win, they have made excellent progress through a third-wicket stand of 80 between William Porterfield and Ian Westwood. Porterfield, in particular, has impressed with his shot selection and calculated aggression. He has not scored as heavily as he would have liked since joining the club from Gloucestershire ahead of the 2011 season – he averaged only 25.34 in the championship last year – but this could well prove to be his best innings for Warwickshire. It would be foolish to presume anything, though. This intriguing game has been characterised by its ebbs and flows with neither side able to take their opportunities. It is sad to report, then, that so few have seen it. While there is much debate over the need for championship cricket on Saturdays, there remains very little evidence that there is a market for it. Over the last few years, Saturday attendances for championship cricket have been pitiful. The coverage in Sunday papers is hardly extensive, either. Those that were at Edgbaston for the third day witnessed a demonstration of the considerable talents of 21-year-old Buttler. While he is nowhere near the finished article – a propensity to flirt outside his off stump would be exploited at Test level – he plays strokes that hint at something quite special. He sweeps and slog-sweeps unusually well and hits his cover drive with eye-catching force. He fell seven short of a third first-class century when he played across a straight one.Compton, by comparison, has more prosaic charms. In an age when most batsmen look to go forward and dominate, he is happy to go back, across and defend. He cuts particularly well, though and, having taken 61 balls over his first 50, showed his patience by taking a further 128 over his second. This – the 13th first-class century of his career – was an admirable innings that frustrated the Warwickshire attack immensely and earned his side a decent chance of victory.Buttler’s dismissal sparked a decline, however. Somerset lost three wickets for five runs in 12 balls, with the deserving Chris Wright winning reward for his line and persistence as Compton, back instead of forward, was bowled. Adam Dibble, inevitably nicknamed ‘Officer’ and another in the abundant stream of young Somerset talent, added a brisk 43 to the total, but won little support. It will have been a painful irony to Warwickshire that Vernon Philander’s innings was ended when Troughton, running back from mid off, took an outstanding, diving catch.Warwickshire, opting to take a positive approach and bludgeon some of the shine from the new ball, promoted Neil Carter to open their second innings. It worked, too, with Carter carving successive fours off Steve Kirby and surviving a tough chance to Arul Suppiah, at long off.The introduction of spin brought immediate reward, however, as Carter drove to cover and, when Kirby was brought back on for the next over, he dismissed Varun Chopra off an ambitious top-edged pull. At that stage, with 216 more required and a top-order that was far from prolific last year, Warwickshire were in some trouble. But Porterfield, driving beautifully through the covers, pulling powerfully and using his feet to negate the spin of George Dockrell, revived the home side and has set up a fascinating final day. Troughton may well have a chance to redeem himself.

USACA board sets elections for March 17

The USA Cricket Association (USACA) general election will now be held at a Special General Meeting on March 17, 2012, according to a letter emailed on Tuesday from the USACA board of directors to all member league presidents and regional chairmen.A board meeting had been held on December 3 to announce that the elections would be postponed for a minimum of 90 days because most leagues failed to submit all of the materials requested from a lawyer, hired by USACA, to conduct what has become a protracted and controversial compliance review process to help decide which leagues are eligible to vote. The letter includes a plea for the leagues to cooperate with the lawyer and USACA so that the organization may be able to carry out its plan with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Podar Enterprises, InSite and Top Bloom – who banded together to form Cricket Holdings America (CHA) in 2010 – to manage a Twenty20 league in the USA next summer.”This is a critical period for USACA,” the letter states. “With an agreement with our international partners now in place, USACA is on the verge of a new era, creating a Twenty20 professional cricket league, implementing new and expanded cricket programs and greatly increasing the popularity of cricket throughout the United States. To move forward with assurance and authority and to ensure that there are no organizational or procedural impediments individually, and as an organization, that could cause us to stumble along the way, it is important to ensure that all members are committed to the organization’s policies and procedures and are fully compliant with the rules of the organization.”USACA was due to get a US$3 million bonus by the end of November as part of its deal with CHA, but according to one source the money has yet to come in because the CHA partners have not been able to bring in another investor to trigger the bonus. The failure is being blamed on the fact that businessmen are hesitant to get involved in a relationship with USACA while it continues to have governance issues. It may also be having an effect on the ability to find good candidates to fill the CEO and Twenty20 league Commissioner position that was advertised in October. A joint press release by USACA and NZC two months ago stated that the CHA partners were accepting applications for someone to take charge of running the proposed Twenty20 league. The release stated that “an appointment is expected to be made by the end of the year” but there has been little news since and it does not appear that a person will be hired before 2012.

Prior bullish despite tough day

Matt Prior said that his team still fancied their chances of sealing the series against Sri Lanka with a game to spare, despite enduring a tough time in the field on the second day

Andrew Miller at Lord's04-Jun-2011England’s centurion, Matt Prior, has said that his team still fancied their chances of sealing the series against Sri Lanka with a game to spare, despite enduring a tough time in the field on the second day at Lord’s. Thanks to an unbeaten century from Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka closed the second day on 231 for 1, a feisty response to their total of 82 all out in the second innings in Cardiff.”We’re an honest enough team to know that we didn’t bowl and field as well as we can do, as well as we have done,” said Prior at the close. “Things don’t always go perfectly to plan in Test cricket. But the thing I know about this team and its character is that we’ll come back tomorrow even harder, even better prepared and even more ready and willing to hit the mark again.”The day started well enough for England, with Prior converting his overnight 73 into an impressive 126 from 131 balls, his second Test century at the ground, and his fifth in 42 Tests overall. His performance helped lift England from a precarious 201 for 5 to an imposing 486 all out, although by the close, Dilshan’s first century as Sri Lanka captain had redressed the balance significantly.Asked whether England had expected too little from Sri Lanka in the aftermath of their Cardiff disaster, Prior denied that was the case. “You can’t expect to bowl a team out in 25 overs every time you walk out,” he said. “I think we just need to go back to basics, take stock of what’s happened today – and I’m sure you’ll see an improved bowling and fielding performance tomorrow.”We walked off after our first innings very, very pleased with the score we got. But then Tillakaratne Dilshan came in and played a very good innings, showing great intent on a pretty docile wicket.”Matt Prior’s fifth Test hundred drew him level with the great Alan Knott•PA PhotosEngland’s attack had a menacing look to it at the start of the Test, with Chris Tremlett, Steven Finn and Stuart Broad all registering between 6’6″ and 6’8″. However, the lofty approach lacked subtlety on a benign wicket, with Finn in particular struggling for line and length. England severely missed the lateral movement that the injured James Anderson could have provided.”You are always going to feel like you’re missing a guy like Jimmy Anderson, because he’s the best swing bowler in the world,” said Prior. “He’s absolute class, and you always want him in your team.”But Finny has come in and is a fantastic bowler in his own right. You saw how many wickets he took in the Ashes and in his short career so far. The line-up as it stands, three big guys and Swanny, is a world-class bowling outfit. We know that, and we back them 100%.”With that in mind, Prior reiterated his faith in his team-mates. “This team keeps surprising itself, keeps pulling things out even when it’s looking ominous,” he said. “To get that score on the board, when we’ve been 20-odd for 3, is a fantastic effort in the first place.”We are not in a bad position and still have a 250-lead. If we do bowl and field well tomorrow, there’s no reason why we can’t get a good first-innings lead. If we bat well again, we’re holding all the cards in this Test match.”On a personal note, Prior’s fifth Test hundred drew him level with Alan Knott, arguably the greatest wicketkeeper-batsman in England’s history, and it was a fact of which he was keenly aware. “It’s something I’m very, very proud of,” he said. “I do keep track of records of other England wicketkeepers from the past, so it’s a nice milestone. The bulk of his runs on the final day came in a 108-run stand for the seventh wicket with Stuart Broad. However, the manner in which he reached three figures was not the most convincing, as four consecutive edges, including a drop at slip by Mahela Jayawardene, carried him from 86 to 99, before a clip to midwicket secured his name on the honour’s board.”The plan is always to take a little moment to get yourself in, but it didn’t really happen … we went from first gear to sixth, which always happens with Broady,” he said. “But in a situation like that, if you’re feeling good you almost just have to go with the flow and ride your luck a little bit – and obviously I was very fortunate through the 90s.”I just thought ‘it’s my day’. Mahela Jayawardene is one of best, if not the best, slip fielders I’ve ever seen, so when he drops you you know you’re on a good thing. You need a bit of luck every now and then, and I had my fair share.”

Baluchistan secure first-innings lead

Round-up of the third day’s play in the second round of matches in the Faysal bank Pentangular Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Feb-2011The game between Baluchistan and Federal Areas at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground seems destined to finish in a draw, but Baluchistan managed to secure a 75-run first-innings lead on the third day. They finished the day 172 runs ahead with seven wickets remaining. Federal Areas had made a solid start in their innings, and reached 190 for 3, before a couple of quick strikes by Baluchistan’s spinners pegged them back. Umar Amin carried on from his overnight score of 37 and reached 82, but the middle and lower order did not add enough runs as Federal Areas conceded the lead. The other overnight batsman Raheel Majeed was trapped lbw on the third morning by fast bowler Abdur Rauf. The spinners then took over, with left-armer Zulfiqar Babar taking 4 for 53 to run through the middle order. Rauf came back to get rid of the tail and ended with figures of 4 for 85.Sind reached 267 for 3 in response to Punjab’s 515 on the third day at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The match is poised interestingly because both teams have a chance to gain points for the first-innings lead: Punjab need seven wickets, while Sind need 248 more runs. The other possibility is Sind do not pass Punjab’s score but do not get all out either, in which case the points will be shared. After Punjab had plundered runs on the wicket in the first two days, it was Sind’s batsmen’s turn on Monday. But they ran into trouble early on as two quick wickets fell and then Fawad Alam was forced to retire hurt. Captain Khalid Latif and Hasan Raza bailed them out, both scoring half-centuries, and then wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed came in and got a fifty of his own. Raza was batting on 75 not out and Sarfraz 68 not out at stumps.

Celtic must secure Ola Solbakken transfer

Celtic are close to snatching the SPFL title away from their Old Firm rivals as the end of what has been a storming season for the Hoops draws to a close.

With 35 league games played, the Bhoys have won 27, drawn five and lost three, scoring 81 goals and conceding 20 along the way under Ange Postecoglou.

One figure that hasn’t contributed that much to the side in an attacking sense is winger James Forrest.

Deployed just 16 times in the league, the Scotsman has only started eight of those games, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.

To put that into perspective, 14 other players in the current squad have found the net on more occasions than the 30-year-old.

As the third-oldest player at the Parkhead club, it could be argued that his time as a first-choice option in the team is coming to an end.

Also, with a significant injury record and a current contract due to expire in the summer of 2023, his days at the club could be numbered as well.

With that in mind, the Hoops have recently been linked with a player that could come in and potentially be a long-term replacement for the veteran.

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail (via Daily Record), Bodo/Glimt winger Ola Solbakken is on Celtic’s radar as a potential summer transfer target if they can’t strike a deal for current on-loan winger Jota.

In 19 appearances under his belt across all competitions this season, the 23-year-old has scored goals and provided assists whilst playing on the left and right sides of the pitch.

This shows how versatile he is and how comfortable he is being an attacking threat on both the left and right wings.

This versatility could also make him a useful next version of Forrest, who has also played on the left and right this season.

Labelled as being “[Jose] Mourinho’s nightmare” by journalist Pablo Giralt after the 23-year-old scored two goals in the 6-1 demolition of the Italian club back in October, the Norwegian has 17 goals and 18 assists to his name in 72 appearances for his current side.

Moving forward, with a reported price tag of £1.6m on the Norway international, the Bhoys should definitely consider paying this and getting him in as a potential long-term replacement for Forrest.

Crystal Palace: Parish drops Zaha update

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has claimed that he doesn’t think “there are any doubts” over the Eagles looking to extend the contract of Wilfried Zaha.

What’s the story?

Speaking to the South London Press, Parish said: “We love Wilfried to bits, but that is a situation that we will discuss with him and his people. We will try and find the right answer for everybody at the right time.”

The Eagles star has enjoyed his best season in front of goal this term with 12 to his name, but the 29-year-old’s current deal is set to expire next summer.

Supporters will be ecstatic

With the Ivorian being a vital cog in the Palace set up for the best part of a decade, supporters will be delighted at the prospect of the club offering him a new contract.

Of course, from Parish’s perspective, attempting to extend the stay of one of the club’s best-ever players is a no brainer. Ultimately, it will come down to whether or not the 29-year-old will want to stay at Selhurst Park.

Zaha has attempted to force transfers away before, with the winger handing in a transfer request back in 2019 in an attempt to join Arsenal, having signed a five-year deal the year before.

However, the Ivory Coast international has since remained in the Palace setup and has seen manager Patrick Vieira enjoy the best of the winger in the Frenchman’s first season in charge at Selhurst Park.

This could well be a contributing factor to attempting to convince the forward to extend his stay.

Since graduating from the Crystal Palace youth set-up in 2010, Zaha has gone on to make 424 appearances for the south Londoners, with a brief spell at Manchester United ultimately proving unsuccessful before a return to Selhurst Park.

In that period, the winger has scored 80 goals for Palace alongside registering 73 assists, making him the Eagles’ 12th highest all-time goalscorer.

Besides the efforts of Zaha and Conor Gallagher, who is expected to return to Chelsea this summer, goals from other sources have been limited with the likes of Odsonne Edouard (six), Jean-Philippe Mateta (six), Christian Benteke (four) and Jordan Ayew (two) all scoring no more than half of the 29-year-old’s current tally for the campaign.

Therefore, the prospect of the Palace star signing a new deal will have supporters ecstatic.
