Modi acting against Rajasthan, says state government

The Rajasthan government has accused Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, of acting out of spite in taking the league’s matches away from Jaipur because he had recently lost an election to head the local association

Cricinfo staff20-Mar-2009The Rajasthan government has accused Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, of acting out of spite in taking the league’s matches away from Jaipur because he had recently lost an election to head the local association. Shanti Dhariwal, the state’s home minister, claimed they had asked for only two matches of the Rajasthan Royals to be rescheduled as per the IPL’s revised schedule but failed to get a response from Modi.”Modi has pulled the IPL out of Jaipur,” Dhariwal said. “We wanted only two out of six dates rescheduled. He [Modi] never negotiated with us. In an election, one party wins and the other loses, like in matches, but that doesn’t mean you leave the state and walk away with the matches. The people of Rajasthan will never forgive him for this.”Jaipur and Delhi do not figure in the IPL’s re-revised list, Modi had said, because local police there could not confirm security for the event without support from central forces who will be deployed for general election duty at the same time. Delhi is understood to be making hectic efforts to get back on the schedule while Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have confirmed that they are willing to host the IPL.The , meanwhile, published a letter from a senior official of Rajasthan’s home department to the Rajasthan Royals franchise, which claimed the state was willing to hold matches in Jaipur as long as they were not held between May 4 and May 10. Elections in Rajasthan are scheduled on May 7.Modi, however, told the newspaper that the state government could not reach a consensus with the central government on the use of central security forces. “I went back with a new schedule, with five matches in Jaipur, but the government once again said it wanted paramilitary forces to provide security. Why would I want to keep Jaipur out?” Modi said. “What can I do if a consensus cannot be reached?”Sundar Raman, the IPL CEO, later issued a press statement on the matter. “There have been media reports about the Rajasthan Royals home matches being deliberately shifted out from the Pink City,” he said in the statement.”To set the record straight – Jaipur was one of the first venues to express interest in hosting IPL and the initial schedule that IPL submitted to the Home Ministry had 5 matches scheduled in Jaipur. However the confirmation from state government of Rajasthan had a rider – which required central forces support. The ministry of home affairs had made it clear that no central forces will be available. The schedule has since undergone multiple iterations. We are operating with constraints and it would be unfair to call this a deliberate effort on the part of IPL for changes in the schedule that have been necessitated,” the statement said.Modi was elected president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) in 2005 and held the post till late last year with the backing of the previous government. However, a change of state administration resulted in Modi losing the post last month.

Forest handed Brennan Johnson boost

Nottingham Forest have been handed a major boost in their bid to keep Brennan Johnson at the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Daniel Taylor’s report for The Athletic, with the journalist claiming that Brentford have all but ended their pursuit of the 20-year-old attacking midfielder, as the Premier League side failed to tempt Forest into parting with the youngster with a number of bids – the latest of which was thought to be worth around £7m.

Taylor went on to state that Dane Murphy was not willing to sanction the sale of the Wales international unless Thomas Frank’s side offered a package worth £12m, which was comprised of a £10m upfront fee plus £2m in add-ons.

Hughton will be delighted

Considering the sheer amount of potential Johnson appears to possess, the fact that Murphy held firm on his asking price for the Forest forward will undoubtedly have delighted Chris Hughton, whose life would have been made much more difficult if the club decided to cash in on the youngster this summer.

Indeed, while the 62-year-old has seen his side get off to a disastrous start to their 2021/22 Championship campaign – having picked up a single point over their opening five-fixture of the season, leaving the Garibaldi rooted to the foot of the table – Johnson has nevertheless impressed for the club.

Indeed, over his five appearances in the league thus far, the £360k-rated man has scored one goal, registered one assist and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.2 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player Sabri Lamouchi dubbed an “unbelievable” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.84, ranking him as Hughton’s third-best performer in the second tier.

As such, the fact that Brentford appear to have admitted defeat in their pursuit of the £2.5k-per-week forward not only looks to be good news for Forest’s Championship hopes this season, but also for the future of the club – as, if the 20-year-old continues at his current rate of development, the Reds will undoubtedly be able to command a much more substantial figure than the £12m they were looking for this season further down the line.

Kamara backed to stay at Rangers

Noel Whelan has offered his thoughts on what the future holds for Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara…

What’s the talk?

Former Leeds forward Noel Whelan has suggested that Rangers will refuse to cash in on Glen Kamara in the January transfer window.

He has claimed that the Gers would sell him next summer, with his contract expiring in 2023, and that a contract extension would need to be sorted before the winter market opens.

Whelan told Football Insider:

“Contract talks are never easy, especially when you’re trying to keep big players at the club.

“It’s especially hard when there’s a real possibility of selling him at the end of the season.

“It will be the end of the season if he is sold.

“There’s no way Rangers would sell in January when they’ll still be fighting for Europe and fighting to retain the title.

“If the deal is to be signed, you would expect that all parties would have agreed to it by January.”

Fans will be delighted

Rangers fans will be delighted with these comments from Whelan as it could be a huge boost to the club if his prediction comes to fruition. Having Kamara at Ibrox for the entire campaign could improve their chances of being successful, as he is a crucial member of Steven Gerrard’s squad.

The central midfielder played in 33 of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership matches last season as they won the league title ahead of Celtic. He averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 6.99, winning 59% of his midfield battles against the opposition over the course of the campaign.

Neil McCann, his former manager at Dundee United, claimed that the Finland international was ‘perfect’ for him. He said of Kamara: “He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect.

McCann added: “He’s a special talent. He’s lightning-quick but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

His statistics from last season and these quotes from McCann highlight Kamara’s quality and why he is an important player for Rangers. Therefore, fans will be buzzing if he does not depart in January, as it would mean they are able to enjoy his talents for at least five more months than they would otherwise.

Arsenal reportedly made a move for the £6.2k-per-week beast during the last transfer window, which shows the level of club currently looking at Kamara. Rangers may not be able to hold off Premier League interest forever, but ensuring that he remains at their club for the entire season, to help retain the title, would delight supporters.

Everton transfer news on James Rodriguez

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as a transfer update emerged on James Rodriguez.

As per Pipe Sierra, Istanbul Basaksehir have now made a loan offer to the Goodison Park club to try and sign the former Real Madrid star.

Talks are currently ongoing between the two clubs, with the Turkish window transfer still open.

Rodriguez was a key player for the Blues last season, scoring six goals and supplying a further nine assists in 26 games across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

With the inability to find a replacement given that the English transfer window is now shut, it would certainly seem like a strange deal for Everton to sanction, so it is no surprise at all that so many Toffees supporters are raging at the news.

These Everton fans were left fuming as the transfer news on Rodriguez was shared by The Toffee Blues on their Twitter page:

“Makes absolutely no sense this, we can’t exactly replace him and we are looking at loaning out a class player who can impact a game for the sake of his wages”

“We absolutely should not be letting him go out on loan full stop. Furthermore, we shouldn’t be letting him go out on loan where we still end up paying most of his wages (which is inevitably what is going to happen). I just want to see the lad play for us”

No change in Stanford schedule

Stanford organisers have confirmed that the Stanford Super Series will go on as scheduled after Allen Stanford and Denis O’Brien – the head of Digicel, sponsors of West Indies cricket – reached an agreement on sponsor rights for the matches.”I am pleased with both parties’ solution oriented approach and most importantly that this matter has been finally resolved,” Stanford said. “We look forward to welcoming fans from around the world to the Stanford Cricket Ground to enjoy a fantastic week of cricket.”The match was put in doubt when Digicel argued that if the Stanford match was officially recognised by the West Indies board then, as official sponsor to the WICB, it had branding and other commercial rights associated with that deal. The High Court in London, where the case was heard, ruled that the WICB had to remove its sanction for the game as not doing so would put it in breach of contract with Digicel. This meant that the November 1 fixture would have pit England against a second-string West Indies side. However with negotiations between Stanford and Digicel being “extremely productive”, according to Stanford organisers, the players involved can continue their preparations for the winner-takes-all $20 million extravaganza.”Digicel is delighted to confirm that negotiations have been successful and that arrangements have been put in place to allow for the series to continue for at least the next three years,” said a statement. “Digicel has at all times supported the Stanford initiative and from the outset sought a negotiated compromise with the relevant parties.”Paul Collingwood, the England batsman, has said the compromise will be good for the game. “It’s going to be interesting, it’s going to be certainly a good spectacle,” Collingwood said. “I’m sure there will be a lot of pressure on the day.”

Grant Flower signs contract extension

Essex allrounder Grant Flower has extended his contract with the county for another year, taking him up to the end of the 2009 season

Cricinfo staff25-Sep-2008Essex allrounder Grant Flower has extended his contract with the county for another year, taking him up to the end of the 2009 season.”Halfway through the season I thought that would probably be it, but I’m very happy to be staying at Essex,” Flower said. “Sussex did speak to me but I always thought that if Essex offered me something I would stay.”They are a good bunch of guys at Essex and I’ve been here for four years, so at this stage in my career I wouldn’t want to move on, ideally.”There is a good spirit and winning culture at Essex and I don’t see why we can’t get better. With the young guys coming through, and new signings, in theory we should be stronger with more competition for places.”

Newcastle offered Mariano Diaz

An update has emerged on Real Madrid attacker Mariano Diaz and it involves Newcastle United.

What’s the talk?

According to Jeunes Footeux, via TeamTalk, Real Madrid have offered Newcastle the chance to sign Mariano Diaz this summer.

The Magpies are said to be weighing up a swoop for the attacker, who has fallen out of favour at the Spanish club and as such, is now seeking a new club.

Imagine him and Wilson

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce must seal a deal for the forward this summer and take up the opportunity Real are giving them.

Goals were hard to come by in the Premier League last season and bringing in extra firepower could help to alleviate that particular issue.

Out of the players currently in the squad, Callum Wilson is the only one who managed more than four goals in the league. The ex-Bournemouth star was terrific as he plundered 12, with Joelinton’s four the next-highest after loanee Joe Willock’s eight, but the Arsenal man remains at The Emirates, for now at least.

Bruce lined up with a 4-4-2 on occasions last term with Joelinton and Wilson as a front two. However, four goals in 31 appearances (23 starts) is not an impressive return from the former.

This is why Mariano could come in and take his place in the side. Lyon assistant boss Gerald Baticle once labelled him as a real goalscorer, claiming that his first intention is always to shoot.

He told EuroSport, via GOAL:

“He’s a real goalscorer.”

“When others might want to make a pass, his first idea is to find an angle to shoot towards goal. All his play is in the centre towards goal.

“Of course, with his first touch, he has to raise his head more often to take in more information and make better choices. But in individual raids, he’s good because he’s capable of piercing the lines.”

His game time has been extremely limited at Real Madrid in recent seasons, but his goal-to-start ratio is excellent with six goals in nine starts across La Liga and the Champions League.

In his last season of playing regular football, he scored 18 goals in 30 Ligue 1 starts for Lyon, averaging a terrific WhoScored rating of 7.15.

This suggests that he could have the potential to arrive at St. James’ Park and score goals in the Premier League, as he has shown he can do it in Ligue 1 – another top league in Europe. It is difficult to say he is proven in La Liga and the Champions League, as the evidence is sparse, but the signs are there that he could have scored more goals if he had been given more chances from the start.

Therefore, bringing in Diaz could complete Newcastle’s attack and hand Wilson a competent partner at the top end of the pitch.

The Real Madrid man will just need to show that he can rediscover his Lyon form because his statistics for the French side dwarf anything Joelinton has been able to do in England.
