Newcastle: Caulkin issues Fonseca update

Paulo Fonseca isn’t as close to the Newcastle United job as has been made out in some quarters, The Athletic’s George Caulkin has warned.

The lowdown

Newcastle are looking to appoint a new manager after parting company with Steve Bruce and leaving assistant Graeme Jones in temporary charge.

There had been ‘a suggestion’ that Fonseca was ‘on the verge’ of taking over at St James’ Park prior to Newcastle’s weekend clash with Crystal Palace after he held talks with the new owners (via The Daily Mail).

Fonseca has been out of work since the end of last season when he left Serie A outfit AS Roma on the expiry of his contract.

The latest

In a tweet which seems to have gone unnoticed, Caulkin reiterated that talks had indeed taken place between the consortium and the Portuguese.

But he also said that, according to his information, the move isn’t in its final stages.

“Well, they’ve spoken to him a couple of times, we know that,” he wrote. “But I was also told today that nothing is as far advanced as has been said. Let’s see.”

The update has gone under the radar due to it being a reply to a fan as part of a long thread – it has just two retweets despite Caulkin having 90,000+ followers.

The verdict

How much longer can Newcastle afford to wait? Well, the international break is approaching and that might be a sensible juncture for transition.

Even if a new boss was to be installed this week, you could argue he’d have little hope of getting a result against league leaders Chelsea.

But Newcastle also face Brighton and Hove Albion before the domestic season pauses, and they’re in desperate need of points after failing to win any of their first nine games.

Sangakkara open to 'maverick idea'

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara believes John Buchanan’s idea of having multiple captains in a team is an interesting concept that opens endless possibilities for the game’s future

Kumar Sangakkara: “If it’s a way to go forward and it shows results, why not?”•AFP

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara believes John Buchanan’s idea of having multiple captains in a team is an interesting concept that opens endless possibilities for the game’s future. Sangakkara said that Twenty20, which he called cricket’s maverick form, was a good testing ground for such “maverick ideas”, which need to be tried and tested for the game to evolve.Sangakkara, who will be making his debut as the full-time captain of Sri Lanka during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in June, said he understands Buchanan’s concept because he believes that leadership is always situational. However, the wicketkeeper-batsman’s endorsement comes with a few lines of caution attached: a lot depends on team communication; it works better for a franchise rather than a national team; and hopefully, it’s not a marketing gimmick by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of April’s IPL.Asked whether he endorsed the multi-captain experiment, Sangakkara told Cricinfo: “If it’s a way to go forward and it shows results, why not? Everyone is looking for the edge to win. If this is going to provide them that in the future, then it’s well and good.”Buchanan, the former Australia coach, had publicly unveiled the concept last week in Kolkata to spark a furious debate in India, where fans fear that the power of Sourav Ganguly, the popular Kolkata captain, may be diluted. Buchanan has shortlisted Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, David Hussey and Brad Hodge to share the captaincy role with Ganguly.Sangakkara said the thought matched his own about captaincy. “I believe that leadership is always situational,” he said. “It’s a very interesting concept, and I think it’s all about using the best man for a specific situation. It will be tried and tested, and then you’ll find that some people are better at ensuring that bowlers are changed correctly, and someone might be good for field settings.”According to Sangakkara, Buchanan’s concept is not new in international sport, either. “Cricket is evolving,” he said. “In American football, you have an offense and defense, a defensive coach and an offensive coach. And cricket, going forward, might have to look at itself differently. Things like fielding captains and bowling captains are experimental tactics where teams are trying to find the best way forward in Twenty20.”The Sri Lankan veteran went to say that the basic thought behind this idea has been employed by his national team for many years now. “The traditional idea of one captain doing all the work is never really true,” he said. “In Sri Lankan cricket, at different times and difficult times, different people step up to lead the side. Also, we’ve always encouraged a team of leaders who are independent thinkers and who are not afraid to contribute ideas and information on and off the field. That feeding of information, as long as the captain has a clear idea of what to choose and what not to, has been the way we’ve been trying to nurture our cricketers. So the concept of having many leaders, many thinkers and so-called many captains has already been working in our side for a long time.”But the pitfalls that await such a revolutionary concept, Sangakkara said, are many: there could be a clash of egos on the field or as Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, pointed out, players may get confused over whom to turn to.”If you have two or three captains operating at the same time on the field with the same players, you can have temperaments clashing, ideas clashing, and there could be an overload of information,” Sangakkara said. “The players themselves may not know who to turn to or listen to for guidance in the end. So you see a potential for confusion.”The other concern, he said, was the thought that Buchanan’s concept – and the controversy it has generated – could just be a PR exercise with just 22 days to go for the second season of the IPL. “Hopefully, it is not a marketing gimmick,” Sangakkara said. “Something to create more interest towards that one franchise, and to get the public to say, ‘Well, we’ll follow the Kolkata Knight Riders from here on’.”Sangakkara, of course, will get a first-hand feel of the multi-captain concept when his IPL team, Kings XI Punjab, take on Buchanan’s Knight Riders on April 21 in Durban and May 3 in Port Elizabeth. Asked whether he would implement the idea – if it worked at the IPL – for the Sri Lanka team for the Twenty20 World Cup, Sangakkara said he would have to think hard about it.”When you play for a franchise, it’s completely different from playing for a national team,” he said. “You play with highly experienced international players; you play with top quality players in the national side as well but the feeling of ‘team’ here is different. We’ll have to wait and see how it works in multi-international teams as opposed to one national team.”Finally though, Sangakkara said, he firmly believed that the multi-captain idea needs to be given a good run before a judgment is passed. “Ideas like this which seem radical and progressive should be given a good run, and we should see how they come off,” he said. “If it comes off well, it’ll be a great innovation. If it doesn’t, it might look a bit stupid. Either way, it’ll be an interesting time for cricket.”

West Ham fans rave over Kral and Vlasic news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have erupted over an official club post involving new signings Alex Kral and Nikola Vlasic.

The duo, who joined West Ham on summer transfer deadline day, are yet to make their debuts for the club but come with plenty of promise.

Kral signs for the Irons on a season-long loan deal with the option to buy and featured for the Czech Republic at Euro 2020, being added to the contingent of West Ham men from that part of Europe.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Meanwhile, Vlasic in particular racked up some very impressive numbers for ex-club CSKA Moscow last year as he joins the east Londoners permanently for a reported £26.8 million fee plus an extra £7.7 million in add-ons (BBC).

Indeed, the 23-year-old averaged a head-turning four shots on goal per 90 in the Russian Premier League over 2020/2021 – far eclipsing the numbers of every West Ham player in the English top flight (WhoScored).

Now, the club have dropped an official post regarding West Ham’s two deadline day signings as their shirt numbers drop on social media (Twitter).

Indeed, Kral will sport number 33 under Moyes while Vlasic gets handed the number 11 jersey in an announcement by the club.

Flocking to this news as supporters anticipate their post-international debuts for West Ham, it’s safe to say there have been plenty of reactions.

Thornely joins century list as Blues dominate

Dominic Thornely and his New South Wales team-mates piled on the runs during a massive first innings of 4 for 521 declared before squeezing five wickets from Tasmania in their unconvincing reply. Nathan Hauritz, the Test offspinner, struck three important blows to remind the selectors of his form as the visitors finished the day on 147, still 224 runs behind the follow-on mark. After Jason Krejza managed 1 for 153 in New South Wales’ innings, Hauritz (3 for 46) turned up to remove Jonathan Wells for 4 in his first over and added Rhett Lockyear (52) and George Bailey (23) to improve his side’s position. Dan Marsh’s second-ball dismissal to Burt Cockley was part of a mini-collapse of 3 for 9 and Luke Butterworth and Tim Paine ensured there was no further loss.Simon Katich, who is playing his final state match of the season due to his international commitments, swept to 143 off 150 balls in an innings that included six sixes. He started the second day wanting to build quickly towards a declaration and the closure came at lunch after Dominic Thornely had picked up 110 not out.Thornely’s century followed the hundred of Phillip Hughes on Friday, while Ben Rohrer was unbeaten on 53. Tasmania tried eight bowlers but none could take more than a wicket.<BR clear="all"

Sutherland backs Ponting's explanation

After a week of strong criticism Ricky Ponting was in the company of more friendly faces, including his wife Rianna and baby daughter Emmy, at his book launch in Sydney © AFP

Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has thrown his support behind Ricky Ponting over Australia’s tactics in the fourth Test in Nagpur. Sutherland said on the fifth day of the match that he looked forward to speaking to Ponting to find out why Australia used part-time slow bowlers on the previous day when they had a chance to try and knock over India’s lower order quickly. But Sutherland, who helped launch Ponting’s book in Sydney on Thursday, said his comments had been slightly misconstrued. “I was asked a question in Melbourne a few days ago,” Sutherland said.”I explained that by saying that I didn’t really want to be drawn on that because I hadn’t had an opportunity to really understand what happened in the course of the game and I would have the opportunity hopefully in the next few days to talk to people and understand that. It wasn’t me issuing a please explain or wanting to come in and interfere on cricket tactics so it’s been a little bit misunderstood.”Sutherland said Ponting had provided “a very reasonable explanation” as to why he did not employ his main strike bowlers as he was trying to improve the over rate. “It’s understandable that not everyone might agree with exactly what he said,” Sutherland said. “But we need to accept that he’s the captain of the Australian cricket team and he has that responsibility.”Ponting has come under fire from all angles during the past week. He was especially annoyed at the suggestion he had put his own interests above those of the team by speeding up the overs to avoid a potential suspension while the Test gradually slipped out of Australia’s reach.”Rick’s batting record speaks for itself but given the events of this week perhaps some need reminding that he is already a cricketing great,” Sutherland said. “He is a player who has always put the team first and he has never measured success by personal statistics.”Any suggestion that he put himself first ahead of the team last week in Nagpur is completely off beam and can only come from someone who does not know him or understand him. With the state of the game today I think Ricky has the potential to end up as the most influential Australian cricketer ever, Bradman apart.”Ponting said the past week and the reactions to the Nagpur loss sat alongside the aftermath of January’s controversial Sydney Test as the toughest times in his international career. “When [people] infer that I’d be putting myself ahead of my team and my team-mates and the chance of pushing for a result in the game,” Ponting said, “then that’s pretty hurtful.”Both men have agreed that over rates need to improve in Test cricket and Sutherland said the current penalty system of fines and suspensions was not sufficient. His comments came after the former Australia coach John Buchanan suggested a yellow card-style punishment, which would mean umpires had the ability to impose sanctions during play.”Umpires certainly have that responsibility out on the ground, but they have a responsibility to communicate,” Sutherland said. “They don’t necessarily have a remedy or a stick in their hand to deal with that.”We’ve been very successful here in first-class cricket by introducing penalties that are aligned to points, so, all of a sudden, no one has trouble bowling 96 overs in a day in Sheffield Shield cricket because if they don’t, it will impact on their points and it will mean there will be a greater likelihood they will miss out on the Sheffield Shield final. Now that is a big stick, and I would suggest that these fines and possible suspensions are not a big enough stick. It would appear to me that there isn’t any remedy for over rates, when an umpire actually has something inside the game that they can deal with. And perhaps that’s something that needs to be explored a little bit further.”

Ele mantém a escalação sob mistério.

2006 Oval Test still a forfeit for MCC

The MCC has recommended the ICC overturn its awarding of a draw for the disputed England-Pakistan Test at The Oval in 2006

The MCC, the independent governor of cricket’s laws, has recommended the ICC overturn its awarding of a draw for the disputed England-Pakistan Test at The Oval in 2006. Originally the match was ruled the first forfeit in the game’s history, but the ICC changed the result at an executive board meeting in July. The MCC world cricket committee, which includes current India captain Anil Kumble and former Test leaders Rahul Dravid, Michael Atherton, Shaun Pollock and Steve Waugh, met on Saturday and Sunday in New Delhi and decided “cricket is the worse for this decision”.The committee chairman Tony Lewis wanted confirmation from the ICC that the original outcome of the match should stand. “The ICC has no power under the laws of cricket to decide that results should be altered, whether it feels it’s ‘inappropriate’ or otherwise,” the former England captain Lewis said. “The ICC’s decision is wrong and sets a very dangerous precedent. Cricket is the worse for this decision.”Majid Khan, the former Pakistan captain, said the committee’s decision was unanimous “simply because the rule states that you can’t overturn a decision”. “The result should stay as is,” he said. When asked what the reaction to the decision would be in Pakistan, Majid said “we’ll wait and see”.The controversy began after tea on the fourth day of the fourth Test when Inzamam-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, refused to lead his team back on to the field following Australia umpire Darrell Hair and West Indian Billy Doctrove enforcing a five-run penalty for ball tampering. It was a decision that initially gave England victory and resulted in a suspension for Hair, who was reinstated after an employment tribunal hearing in October 2007, following protests from Pakistan. Hair has since stood down from elite-level umpiring.Inzamam, who is now retired and playing in the unofficial Indian Cricket League, was fined for four games for bringing the game into disrepute. The team was cleared of the original ball-tampering allegations.”The board’s decision was based on the view that in light of the unique set of circumstances, the original result of the match was felt to be inappropriate,” the ICC said in a statement in July. The ruling meant England won the four-match series 2-0 instead of 3-0.”As far as we’re concerned there is no record of any other result [but a forfeit],” Lewis said. “We’re not reversing the ICC result, we’re just saying they had no place to do that. We, MCC, wrote the rules in 1788 and the laws working party now is run by Robert Griffiths QC. Legally, there is absolutely no way the ICC can change the laws of the game, which it did do.”The committee also supported the umpire review system that was used in the recent Sri Lanka-India Test series and agreed to work with the ICC in ensuring the primacy of Test cricket. It also vowed to complete further research into trialling pink balls in the hope they could be used in day-night Tests. An increased focus on fostering spin bowlers was also discussed along with a recommendation that umpires should not give the players the option to leave the field for bad light. MCC’s 18-man world cricket committee is charged with improving the game and its governance. As the sport’s law makers, the MCC has the power to alter the rules while using its influence to urge the ICC to change its position.
