Opener Dimuth Karunaratne has been named in Sri Lanka’s squad to Australia for three Tests, the first of which begins in Hobart on December 14. Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep also finds a place in the squad, but 19-year-old offspinner Tharindu Kaushal, who is with the team for the ongoing home series against New Zealand, has not been named. Pradeep is the only addition to the squad for the New Zealand Tests, and is one of five quick bowlers in the 16-man party to Australia.Left-handed Karunaratne, 24, made a first-innings duck on debut in the Galle Test against New Zealand, but bounced back to score a run-a-ball 60 not out in the second innings to complete Sri Lanka’s 10-wicket victory. He had earned his Test debut after an impressive tour of South Africa with the Sri Lanka A team, in which he was the leading run-scorer, having made 270 runs in two unofficial Tests, at an average of 90. He opens the batting for Sinhalese Sports Club in first-class cricket, alongside Tharanga Paranavitana, who was also named in the squad to Australia.Pradeep has played three Tests for Sri Lanka, two of which were in July against Pakistan. Shaminda Eranga, who came back from an injury layoff in Galle to take three wickets in the New Zealand first innings, has retained his place, as has Nuwan Kulasekara. Chanaka Welegedara and Dhammika Prasad are the other seam bowlers, while Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv will provide the spin options.Fast-bowling allrounder Thisara Perera has not been named. He took four wickets and made 75 in the last Test he played in July. He had also bowled well in Australia in an ODI tri-series earlier in the year. Lahiru Thirimanne, who bats in the middle order in limited-overs cricket, also misses out. Both men are on standby, alongside allrounder Jeevan Mendis, and spinners Akila Dananjaya and Ajantha Mendis. After Hobart, Sri Lanka play at the MCG in the Boxing Day Test, before moving to Sydney for the New Year Test. Fast bowler Rubel Hossain has been left out of Bangladesh’s 30-member preliminary squad for the World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka from September. The squad includes all the current national-team players who toured Zimbabwe or Europe this summer, as well as seven discarded internationals and six uncapped players in Mominul Haque, Sabbir Rahman, Sohag Gazi, Kazi Kamrul Islam, Al-Amin Hossain and Alauddin Babu.Rubel had injured his shoulder while playing in the Bangladesh Premier League in February and hasn’t played top-flight cricket since. He underwent surgery in South Africa for the problem, and had hoped to be fit in time for the World Twenty20.For the final squad, it is likely that the selectors will stick to experienced Twenty20 batsmen, especially since Anamul Haque – who will lead Bangladesh Under-19s in Australia in August – wasn’t at his best in Zimbabwe.Bangladesh will take on New Zealand on September 21 in their first World Twenty20 match, before playing against Pakistan on September 25. Both matches will be held at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Three players with significant sporting pedigree will become MCC Young Cricketers this season

Revitalised Sri Lanka look to even series

Match facts

Start time 1430 (900 GMT)Lasith Malinga took five wickets in Sri Lanka’s comfortable win in the 3rd ODI•AFP

Big Picture

A lot has changed in Australian cricket over the past 24 hours but one thing remains the same: the team is in Sri Lanka trying to win a one-day series. The players have been briefed on the Argus report, which has resulted in Andrew Hilditch and Greg Chappell being removed from the selection panel, and the captain and coach being made selectors. Chappell remains in Sri Lanka with the side, and will pick the team for Saturday’s match. It might be difficult for the players to retain their focus amid such turmoil, but given how impressive Sri Lanka were in the third match, they will need to shut out all distractions.Tillakaratne Dilshan and his men found a spark to keep the series alive in Hambantota, and victory in Saturday’s game in Colombo will level the series. The teams met at this venue during the World Cup but the match was washed out. The pitch had offered plenty of spin on that occasion, which should give the hosts some confidence.

Form guide

In the spotlight

Lasith Malinga’s five-wicket haul in Tuesday’s victory was overshadowed by Upul Tharanga’s century, but it was just as impressive. At his best, Malinga is fast, accurate, and gets late swing that means a batsman cannot afford to play the wrong line. He will be a key weapon throughout the rest of the series.Doug Bollinger has been in excellent form for Australia so far in this series, having taken taking eight wickets at 13.87, yet he’s not part of the squad for the Test matches coming up after the one-dayers. He has used his pace, bounce and angle to great effect in the first three games, and was easily Australia’s best bowler in the loss in the third match. Bollinger might not exactly be able to bowl himself into the Test squad, but if he keeps his form up, he’ll have every chance of being the first backup if any of the bowlers break down in the longer format.

Team news

Sri Lanka might have won the third ODI, but not all members of their team have pulled their weight, and three men have been dropped from the squad. Of those, Dinesh Chandimal was the only one who played in the victory, and his axing should mean Chamara Silva retains his spot. The uncapped legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna has been rushed home from England, where he was playing for Sri Lanka A.In Hambantota, Sri Lanka played just the one specialist spinner, Ajantha Mendis, with Jeevan Mendis playing a supporting role. But with the action shifting to Colombo Dilshan said in the pre-match press conference they would play two spinners. He also said Prasanna could be handed a debut though he will be competing for a spot with Suraj Randiv. Dilshan admitted Sri Lanka may consider dropping Jeevan Mendis since they had given him plenty of opportunities, and he has not produced with either bat or ball in the series.Angelo Mathews has been ruled fit after missing the third game.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Suraj Randiv / Seekkuge Prasanna, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Lasith Malinga.Australia’s main concern surrounds the out-of-form Brad Haddin, but with no other gloveman in the squad, they have no option but to retain him. One possibility would be to bring Shaun Marsh in to open and push Haddin down the order, perhaps squeezing out Steven Smith, who has delivered little with bat or ball so far in the series. But Australia are loath to tinker, and a more likely scenario if the conditions are suitable would be a straight swap of the allrounder John Hastings for Smith, with Haddin to stay at the top.Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey, 7 Steven Smith / John Hastings, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Doug Bollinger.

Pitch and conditions

The Hambantota pitch didn’t offer as much assistance to the spinners as might have been expected, but expect the ball to turn in Colombo. Dilshan said the track looked slow.

Stats and trivia

  • Kumar Sangakkara will play his 300th ODI, the sixth Sri Lankan to reach the milestone.
  • Upul Tharanga needs one more century in 2011 to equal the Sri Lankan record for most ODI hundreds in a calendar year for the second time. The record is jointly held by Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, who made five each in 2006.
  • Australia fare better under Michael Clarke when he loses the toss. They’ve lost four of nine ODIs when he’s won the toss, and only three of 21 games when he’s lost the toss.

    Quotes

“The difference between the other teams and the Australians is if you take their fast bowlers, they have speed and ability to swing the ball and, more than other teams, they pose a massive challenge.”
“We know that if we can make inroads in their top order, we’ve got a good chance.”

Akram Raza, the former Pakistan offspinner, has said he is not guilty of illegal betting and his arrest from a Lahore market on Sunday was a set-up. The 46-year-old Raza was released on bail on Monday after having been taken into custody along with six other men during a police raid on an suspected gang of bookmakers, reportedly taking bets on the IPL.”I have nothing to do with the illegal betting in IPL and it was a set-up just to get me there,” he told after his release from police custody.Akram, who played nine Tests and 49 one-day internationals, said he went to the plaza to see some friends and as soon as he reached there, police raided the office of his friend and arrested all of them for taking illegal bets. Police, reportedly, recovered telephone sets, computers, televisions and a large amount of money.”It is a bad incident in which I have been involved through a planned move and at this stage my career as a national umpire is at stake and I will do everything to prove myself innocent,” Akram said.”For me it is really hard to go through such a situation but I am not guilty and I will be writing to PCB through my lawyer in a couple of days to explain my point of view and to prove my innocence.Akram was one of the six Pakistani players fined in a match-fixing inquiry conducted by Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum in 2000.

Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that he started nurturing ambitions of winning the 2011 World Cup right after India’s crushing first-round exit in the 2007 edition of the tournament. Talking to after India’s victory in the World Cup final, Tendulkar said the prospect of lifting the Cup in front of his home crowd had motivated him through tough times.”That [winning the World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium] was my dream after we lost in 2007,” Tendulkar said. “I took up that challenge. I said, the next World Cup is in Mumbai and this is where I would want the trophy. It was a challenge and I started working towards that.”After the 2007 World Cup when we got to know that the next one is in India and the final would be held in Mumbai. That is when I felt that this is the place where we have to lift the trophy.”Tendulkar admitted the 2007 exit, which came on the back of a patch of poor personal form was the toughest phase of his career. “Yeah, it was really tough,” Tendulkar said. “My family and friends really supported me at that stage. It was probably the toughest phase of my career and I was really demoralised. Talking about the World Cup in India at that time was something which motivated me. The final in Mumbai, that was greater motivation because here is where I grew up playing cricket. I wanted to do something really, really special here in India and Mumbai.”Tendulkar said MS Dhoni’s winning hit in the final was the most unforgettable moment of the campaign. “The moment the winning runs were scored, I jumped,” he said. “Viru [Virender Sehwag] who was next to me, jumped too. We were sitting in the dressing room and praying.”India’s win included hard-fought victories against each of the former World Cup champions. Tendulkar scored two centuries in losing causes, but rated his chancy 85 against Pakistan as his most important contribution. Tendulkar recalled a couple of critical moments in that game, which India went on to win and extend their unbeaten record against Pakistan in World Cups.”We set a 6-3 field against Pakistan at Mohali,” Tendulkar said. “Their opening batsman, Mohammad Hafeez tried to play a sweep shot off Munaf Patel and got caught behind. I thought that was the turning point of the match.”The catch Viru took off Shahid Afridi [was also crucial]. The match was very much alive then because Misbah-ul-Haq and Afridi were batting and we needed two-three big overs at that stage, so that was an important catch. An easy one, but important.”

– Sinceramente ainda não me caiu a ficha.

Tudo ficava nele. Um profissional excepcional – finalizou.

We are enjoying the challenge – Greatbatch

New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch has praised his team’s fighting spirit and the patience shown by them so far

Mark Greatbatch: “If you can control the scoreboard it is a big plus”•AFP

New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch has praised his team’s fighting spirit and has said the patience shown by the New Zealand players has been one of the key factors in their performance in India so far. New Zealand, ranked the No. 8 Test side in the world, were under pressure coming into the India tour following their 4-0 ODI series in loss in Bangladesh, but they managed to draw the first two Tests, against the No. 1 side to defy expectations.”It has been a good war of attrition. The guys have been working hard for the two Tests – 10 days of cricket,” Greatbatch told the . “And that scenario we need to improve on.”We have fought hard. We were behind in this game [in Hyderabad] but we caught up pretty well. We are fighting every ball, every over, every hour and every session. We are enjoying the challenge that India is throwing at us.”New Zealand were expected to struggle to take 20 wickets, given the inexperience in their fast bowling attack. But led by captain Daniel Vettori – the leading wicket-taker in the series – the New Zealand bowlers have bowled with discipline, backed by sharp fielding to surprise the Indian batsmen. “There are different plans to what you bowl in say, the UK or New Zealand,” Greatbatch said. “The areas to bowl in India are straight. Aiming at the off and middle stump, you bring the lbw and clean-bowled into play. And in case the ball holds the line, there’s a high possibility of an edge. If you can control the scoreboard it is a big plus. That way you can bowl a number of dot balls.”One of the positives to emerge from the second Test for New Zealand was the form of Brendon McCullum, promoted to open the innings. McCullum made a match-saving double-century, his highest Test score. “You’ve got to be patient. If you show patience you get good results. McCullum batted for nine hours and got good results.”In Ahmedabad, New Zealand were hampered by the absence of fast bowler Hamish Bennett, who injured his groin on the first day and bowled only 15 overs. Jesse Ryder, who bowled 17 overs in the first innings in Ahmedabad, picking up one wicket, didn’t bowl in the second innings because of a calf injury. Greatbatch, though, said such problems were unavoidable.”Everyone has to think about their responsibility and not be distracted by such things. You need to think about the things that you can control. It could be about the next ball or next over you are facing. It is all about focussing on the hour and keeping a strong mind.”The third and final Test begins in Nagpur on Saturday. New Zealand are yet to win a Test series in India and, despite their strong performance so far, Greatbatch was cautious in looking ahead. “This has been a see-saw series. We have dominated play at the same time we have fought back after India have dominated. We will relax the mind and body for the next day and half. We need to go to Nagpur and look at what we face there.”
