O'Keefe hurts Redbacks in follow-on

ScorecardSteve O’Keefe grabbed seven wickets on the third day•Getty Images

Steve O’Keefe pushed South Australia to the verge of defeat with four wickets – and seven for the day – as they slumped in their follow-on. New South Wales dismissed their opponents for 255 in the second session before the hosts cruised during an 82-run opening stand, but they quickly lost five for 11.At stumps they were 7 for 176 and need another 98 to make the Blues bat again. O’Keefe, the left-arm spinner who was with the Test squad in England during the winter, finished with 4 for 39 to follow his first-innings 3 for 25.He removed James Smith to a catch behind for 63 after the opener started well with Dan Harris (20), and followed up by removing Aiden Blizzard first ball. Cameron Borgas (13) and Daniel Christian (13) also fell to O’Keefe while Trent Copeland removed Michael Klinger and Graham Manou cheaply.Blizzard, playing his first Sheffield Shield game since moving from Victoria, had been the mainstay of the hosts’ first bat with 96 before he was caught behind off Copeland. Copeland finished with 3 for 78 while Moises Henriques, who did some damage on the second afternoon, collected 4 for 53.

Leicestershire edge thriller

ScorecardA valiant 71 not out from Australian Adam Voges was not enough to prevent Nottinghamshire Outlaws from slipping to their third Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat to dampen their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. In a nail-biting finish, Voges could only drive the last ball from Josh Cobb weakly to mid-on for none as Leicestershire sealed a four-run win at Trent Bridge.Voges received little support from his Nottinghamshire team-mates, with captain Chris Read (32) the only man to offer more than a cameo, while Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard led the visitors’ bowling attack in picking up 3 for 43. Matthew Boyce’s 60 and 58 from James Taylor had helped Leicestershire to reach 219 for 7 from their 40 overs, with England Under-19 seamer Jacob Ball picking up 3 for 32 in his first appearance of the season. After Luke Fletcher had made the early breakthrough with James Benning caught at cover, Ball picked up two wickets in his second over, with Jacques du Toit playing on and Cobb bowled by a beautiful off-cutter. And the Notts Academy graduate’s day got even better in his following over when Greg Smith chased a wide delivery to edge behind to wicketkeeper Read. But a partnership of 114 in 21 overs between Boyce and Taylor recovered the situation as the pair worked the field and scampered singles, hitting only seven boundaries between them. The batting powerplay yielded 45 of those runs and also saw Boyce dismissed lbw by Samit Patel, while an unbeaten cameo 33 from Tom New, featuring four fours and a six, provided a timely boost at the death, with Taylor yorked by Ryan Sidebottom and Jigar Naik run out.Voges only arrived from Australia at 7.00pm yesterday but seemed free of jet-lag when he arrived at the crease in the 15th over, after Alex Hales, Akhil Patel and Matt Wood had all fallen. And while Samit Patel also returned to the pavilion two overs later, clipping a full toss from James Benning to a diving Naik at midwicket, Voges found the gaps with nudged singles in accompaniment with Read to keep Notts in sight of the required run-rate.Benning’s medium-pace proved particularly hard to get away, and with Notts forced to up the pace in the last 10 overs, wickets began to fall. Read pulled Hoggard to deep square leg and Steven Mullaney edged behind in the former England star’s next over to expose the tail.Despite Voges’ best efforts, his bowlers were unable to contribute with the bat, Graeme White bowled by Naik, Fletcher lbw to Hoggard and Ball stumped off Cobb in the final over. Notts will now need to win both their remaining group matches – concluded by a trip to Edgbaston next weekend – to overtake Warwickshire and claim a semi-final spot.

AVFC dealt McAtee transfer blow

Even though Aston Villa may have had a fairly impressive January transfer window in terms of the business they completed throughout the month, it seems as though they’ve now been dealt a blow in their apparent chase to sign one of the Premier League’s most promising young talents.

What’s the latest?

After being linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee during the recent January transfer window among many other clubs also vying for his signature, Villa and those other clubs have now been dealt a big blow in their future attempts to sign the 19-year-old.

That’s after he recently put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the Manchester club on Wednesday evening.

Gerrard gutted

In 81 appearances for City’s youth sides, McAtee has managed to rack up 42 goals and 26 assists, highlighting the clear attacking talents he has and presumably why so many clubs were apparently after him last month.

This also shows how disappointed and gutted Villa manager Steven Gerrard will be at missing out on having a young talent like McAtee in his ranks.

Described as an “intelligent” player in the past by City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy, he could have been the perfect replacement for current Villa teenager Carney Chukwuemeka with the future of his time at Villa Park in doubt.

Now that the midfielder has pledged his future to the reigning league champions and current leaders until 2026, this could put an end to the possibility of the Midlands side or any other team signing him on a permanent basis in the immediate future.

However, with the teenager only making three senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions so far this season, all coming from the substitutes bench, there’s every chance that a loan move away where he’d be able to play regular senior minutes would be seen as beneficial for the youngster.

With that in mind, when the next summer transfer window opens, if the Englishman doesn’t manage to break into the City team before then and isn’t likely to get much senior game time, it would definitely be worth seeing if they’d be willing to loan him out to a club like Villa.

Celtic: Barkas set for January departure

Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas looks set to seal a move away from Parkhead in what remains of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claimed that IFK Goteborg are on the lookout for a new number one and have identified the 27-year-old as one of their primary targets for the position.

However, the report also suggested that, despite the two clubs being in talks regarding a deal for the Greece international, Celtic would require the Swedish side to pay a loan fee in any deal for the shot-stopper in order for to sanction his departure this month.

Fans will be elated

Considering just how poor Barkas has been for Celtic since his £5m move to Glasgow in 2020, in addition to him currently earning a whopping £20k-per-week at Parkhead, the news that the Bhoys could finally be set to see the back of the 27-year-old is sure to have left fans elated.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-2″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news”]

Indeed, over his 15 Premiership outings last season, the £1.35m-rated ‘keeper well and truly failed to live up to expectations at Celtic Park, averaging just one save and conceding 0.7 goals per game.

These returns saw the former AEK Athens stopper earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.79, ranking him as the club’s joint ninth-worst player in the top flight.

Furthermore, since Postecoglou’s arrival at Celtic last year, Barkas has featured just twice for the current manager, which demonstrates just how limited a future the 27-year-old would appear to have in Glasgow.

As such, it would very much seem as if a move away from Parkhead this month would suit all parties. However, considering that the Bhoys will be offloading one of their highest-earning players in getting Barkas off the books, it will probably suit the Hoops much more than the ‘keeper himself.

Djed Spence can end Conte’s Spurs nightmare

Tottenham Hotspur could end one of Antonio Conte’s biggest nightmares for just £10m this summer.

During the winter transfer window, the north London outfit were linked with a move for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, who has been impressing out on loan to Championship rivals Nottingham Forest.

He has played a huge part under their new manager, Steve Cooper, helping the Reds knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup and project them firmly into the promotion race.

It’s thought that Spurs failed with two bids for him on deadline day but now an encouraging claim has emerged that will be music to the ears of sporting director Fabio Paratici and the Italian head coach too.

According to Eurosport transfer insider Dean Jones, the 21-year-old gem could be available for a very low fee, despite likely competition in his signature.

“There’s going to be a lot of competition to sign him, but Middlesbrough are open to the idea of him leaving permanently,” he told GIVEMESPORT, “I think it’s £10m, I was told, that was the figure, which isn’t that bad for a Premier League club to be signing a player at that level.”

Conte was reportedly very keen to sign a new right wing-back in January due to doubts over Emerson Royal’s ability to fulfil the role and the Lilywhites’ embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Southampton in midweek was another cold reminder of why he feels that way.

The Brazil international played a devastating role in arguably all three of the goals they conceded, being horribly out of place inside the box and failing to clear his lines.

It’s also telling that he still continues to get the nod over Matt Doherty, so it’s easy to see why the 52-year-old wants a new option and he could find the perfect solution in Spence, who was recently lauded as a “constant threat” by ex-Premier League winner Wes Morgan.

Spence currently rates out amongst Forest’s top five performers in the Championship, having also averaged 1.6 interceptions (second-best) and 1.5 tackles per game, whilst further forward he can also contribute in abundance, where he has registered an average of 1.7 successful dribbles and 0.9 key passes per outing, too (via WhoScored).

He more than held his own up against the Gunners and his performance that day led to high praise indeed.

“But let me say, that was one of the best right-back performances I have seen for a very long time. A very long time,” Arsenal legend Ian Wright told his podcast and he later added: “I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”

For just £10m, Spurs could well be getting themselves an absolute bargain and ultimately, he would fill one of Conte’s biggest problems at the club right now.

Homegrown, bags of potential and very consistent, the swashbuckling Spence must be signed in the summer at all costs.

Newcastle: Rob Holding a potential target

Arsenal’s Rob Holding will be on Newcastle’s January centre-back shortlist, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown

A recent report from The Daily Mail suggested that the Magpies want to sign two centre-backs this month, while The Athletic’s Chris Waugh said over the weekend that the club were hopeful of adding both Lille’s Sven Botman and Seville’s Diego Carlos to their ranks.

Newcastle have the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League for goals conceded and the outright worst for expected goals against.

A potential alternative to the aforementioned duo, especially with Botman seemingly now unattainable, Holding has two-and-a-half years remaining on his Arsenal contract and is valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt.

The latest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke is certain that the Gunners defender is one of the names under consideration at St James’ Park.

He stated: “Rob Holding at Arsenal. I’m sure he’s on Newcastle’s list.”

The verdict

Holding has found Premier League minutes hard to come by this season as he battles with the likes of Gabriel and Ben White. He has only started three times in the top flight in 2021/22, with most of his game-time coming in the domestic cups.

He may duly be open to leaving the Emirates Stadium and, intriguingly, data from FBRef shows he’s stylistically similar to Botman, with a high volume of progressive passes and blocks.

He also earned praise last month for reporting alleged racist abuse of some Arsenal team-mates during one Premier League match, with a statement from the anti-racism group Kick It Out saying that “his actions are a great example of taking a stand and being an ally to his team-mates” (The Mirror).

Is he actually good enough to address Newcastle’s defensive woes, though?

If scouts were watching him on Sunday, they may be far from convinced. Holding produced what Football FanCast editor Matt Dawson called a ‘royal stinker’ as Arsenal were shocked by Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, while he ranks a lowly 18th in WhoScored’s performance rankings among Mikel Arteta’s squad this season.

Ultimately, Newcastle can’t afford to take any chances on these crucial signings, especially with their Premier League status on the line beyond the midway point of the season.

Deccan, Kolkata miss overseas stars in opener

Match facts

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Kolkata’s Owais Shah is set to make his IPL debut•Getty Images

Big picture

It’s the first of 60 matches: The defending champions taking on wooden-spoon winners, after a flashy opening ceremony, amid high security at a stadium neither calls home. What stakes does the first bout of IPL 2010 hold, when the contestants know they have 13 to follow? Not much in isolation, given the unpredictability of the format and the duration of the tournament, but Kolkata Knight Riders, who’ve won only nine out of 28 previous IPL matches during campaigns fraught with controversy, would love to hit the ground running.Kolkata’s build-up to Friday’s opening game has been quieter than in the first two seasons. They appointed a coach who prefers to stay behind the scenes, and not quote Sun Tzu; they named one captain for the entire tournament rather than pass the responsibility around; and they’ve had fewer chest-beating advertisements on television. Their owner, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, has, by his standards, flown under the radar. One of the few off-field developments that made headlines was their new purple and gold strip. They were even involved in the few trades that took place during the transfer window, and used it to strengthen their batting. Could the toning down of the razzmatazz that made the Knight Riders the most flamboyant team despite horrendous results engineer an on-field reform? For proof that it can be done, they only need to look at their opponents. Deccan Chargers finished last in the opening season, winning only two games and none at home in Hyderabad. They too made significant changes – a new captain and coach – for the second season in South Africa and were surprise winners. However, they are not among the most formidable teams this season: their squad contains overseas players who are either out of form or short on match-practice; their bowlers had struggled to contain on India’s flat batting surfaces and were more effective in South Africa.

Team talk

Kolkata have only six overseas players to choose from at the moment: Brad Hodge, Owais Shah, Ajantha Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Mashrafe Mortaza and Charl Langeveldt. The likes of Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, David Hussey and Shane Bond will join the squad only after their international commitments. It’s likely that Mendis and Mortaza will be the ones to miss out on the opening game. Ajit Agarkar did not train on the eve of the match because of a calf strain and is likely to sit out as well. Kolkata signed up an Under-19 player, Mandeep Singh, 48 hours ago and he is reportedly in their scheme of things.Deccan don’t have a choice regarding their overseas players for the first game. They have only four in the squad so Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Chaminda Vaas will play. It’s a bit of a concern since Gilchrist, Symonds and Vaas have been out of competitive cricket while Gibbs has been struggling for form with South Africa. They have a strong Indian contingent, though, with VVS Laxman and Rohit Sharma bolstering the batting, and RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha leading the bowling.

Previously…

Kolkata beat Deccan in both matches during the 2008 season: by five wickets at home and by 23 runs away. Deccan, however, won both matches during the 2009 season in South Africa, beating Kolkata by eight and six wickets.

In the spotlight

Charl Langeveldt v Deccan’s openers: Adam Gilchrist has spent another year without playing much competitive cricket and his opening partner Gibbs isn’t in prime form anymore. In Langeveldt, Kolkata possess a clever bowler capable of taking crucial wickets and Gilchrist’s will be the prize scalp. Langeveldt played only one game last season so, if given an opportunity tomorrow, he’ll be keen to stake his claim before Shane Bond arrives.Owais Shah: Kolkata acquired Shah from Delhi this season, in exchange for Moises Henriques, to bolster a batting line-up that is missing McCullum, Gayle and Hussey during the early stages. Shah spent the entire season on the sidelines for Delhi in 2009 so he’ll be desperate to make an impact in his first IPL opportunity. Those who watched his 72 off 48 balls in an ODI in Bangalore, and his 98 against South Africa in the Champions Trophy will know what damage Shah can cause with his innovative technique.

Prime numbers

  • Kolkata possess the two highest run-scorers in Twenty20 cricket. Hodge has 2547 runs in 77 innings at a strike-rate of 129 and David Hussey has scored 2355 runs at a strike-rate of 139.
  • Adam Gilchrist was the second highest run-scorer in IPL 2009 – 495 at a strike-rate of 152. RP Singh was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, with 23 at an economy-rate of just under seven an over.

    The chatter

“Everyone team is affected by the international schedule. It is not a surprise. We are only one of the teams who are not full-strength as yet. But it is about the Indian contingent and how they perform that can often determine the results.”
.”It’s a new set up at KKR. We have done the best in everything we can, hopefully we will deliver. I am not too keen to talk about the past. We have a good atmosphere.”
    .

  • Rangers: Major update emerges on Olsen

A major update has emerged on Rangers’ chances of bringing a key transfer target to Ibrox this month…

    What’s the talk?

According to Danish outlet BT, via Inside Futbol, Belgian side Club Brugge are set to land Gers target Andreas Skov Olsen from Bologna, although it remains to be seen whether they are prepared to sign him permanently or just on loan until the end of the season.

This comes after a report claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side had made an offer to sign him on a permanent basis, with the Scottish champions now poised to miss out on his services.

    Van Bronckhorst will be gutted

Van Bronckhorst will surely be gutted by this news, as it suggests that he will not be seeing Olsen in action for the club this season, with Ross Wilson headed for a blunder by missing out on a deal for the Danish attacker.

The youngster is a promising talent with a wealth of experience already under his belt and could have been an excellent addition to Van Bronckhorst’s squad. He has shown sparks of life in Serie A with Bologna but has failed to truly explode in the Italian top flight, with two goals and four assists in 18 league starts since the beginning of last season.

Olsen has also scored five goals and provided three assists in 10 World Cup qualifying matches for Denmark at senior level. This shows that he has the quality to regularly deliver goals and assists on the international stage.

Van Bronckhorst will be gutted that it seems as though he will not be able to enjoy coaching the 22-year-old in the Premiership this season, particularly given the issues they have had in the Dane’s favoured position on the right flank.

Ianis Hagi and Scott Wright have played out wide for Rangers this season and have just three league goals and no assists between them. This suggests that there is scope for the Gers to improve their options in that area of the pitch, and Olsen could have done exactly that.

Therefore, Van Bronckhorst will be frustrated that they are set to miss out on Olsen, and it represents a blunder from Wilson. However, there is still time to go in the transfer window, so the Ibrox supremo has an opportunity to target a different player to come in and improve the side.

AND in other news, “Rangers keen”: Jordan Campbell drops exciting transfer claim that’ll delight GVB…

Sehwag thanks bowlers for 'good start to year'

It’s tempting to say that India didn’t play like the No. 1 Test team in the world, but have they already acquired the aura that dominant teams like West Indies and Australia possessed in their heydays? India are at the top because they have won more than then the rest of the competition. It says as much about the competitors as it does of India; it doesn’t take away anything from them. They might have beaten Bangladesh despite an imperfect game, but Ishant Sharma’s comeback was heartening. It’s their bowling that has made the critics like Ian Chappell doubt about their ability to hold on to the top spot and Ishant’s performance would have given them a big boost. It wasn’t a performance that would have really troubled a better batting unit, but there were signs of a revival that has pleased Virender Sehwag. “Ishant bowled really well,” Sehwag said. “It’s good for him and good for Indian cricket.”Eric Simons, the new bowling consultant, had hinted at the problem previously. “One of the things that happens we sometimes ask bowlers to do something that he is not comfortable. For example, it’s not easy for a bowler who bowls big incoming deliveries to bowl the one that goes other way. You have to see what he is naturally good at and work on the other stuff.”Zaheer Khan was his usual self and though Sreesanth had a forgettable Test, there was no reason to panic yet. Sreesanth had no-ball problems in the first innings and lost rhythm completely. He returned later to pick up two wickets in the end and in the second innings he ran into Mushfiqur Rahim, who was almost swinging at everything at that moment. “Sreesanth struggled for rhythm initially but came back really well by the end of the first innings,” Zaheer said. It’s the batting that didn’t allow India to boss the hosts as they should have. They collapsed cheaply in the first innings and if it were not for Sachin Tendulkar, they might well have been shot out for 150. However, Sehwag wasn’t unduly worried. “It happens with every team. Australia got out for around 120 in that [Sydney] Test against Pakistan but they won. We managed to score 250 because of Sachin, but we did bat well in the second innings and our bowling did the job for us.”The only jarring note was that Australia collapsed against a good-quality Pakistan attack on a helpful track, while India went down against Bangladesh. However, it would take a brave man to say the Indian batting line-up would collapse so cheaply again on a good batting surface, with enough quality in the arsenal. It’s the first Test of the New Year and Sehwag was understandably happy to get off on a right footing. “It has been a good start to the year,” he said. “It’s important to start well I guess. Everybody chipped in to make it happen. We didn’t bat well first time but the bowlers have helped us win this game.”The second Test in Dhaka will present an opportunity to the batsmen to leave their imprint on a series which has, already, turned more interesting than it initially promised.
