Pundit says Celtic should have signed free agent Gary Cahill

Journalist Anthony Haggerty has told Football FanCast that Celtic should have looked to sign Gary Cahill.

Ange Postecoglou has already made a couple of defensive additions but has been unable to add another centre-back to his ranks as he looks to improve on last season’s struggles at the back.

And prior to Gary Cahill signing for Bournemouth following his release from Crystal Palace, the 6 ft 4 centre-half was available on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old had been a regular at Palace since leaving for Chelsea two years ago and would not only have brought a wealth of experience in both the Premier League and Champions League – competitions his defending has helped the Blues to win – but he’s also already got a relationship with Joe Hart following their time together with England.

Stephen Welsh and Carl Starfelt have started the last five matches in all competitions together, but those two are just 19 and 26 respectively.

With that in mind, Haggerty told Football FanCast:

“I would still like them to bring in another centre-back and the one I have been talking about his Gary Cahill – I think he could do a job for Celtic.

“Gary Cahill is an ideal short-term signing for Celtic.  And all that experience that he could bring to the backline would’ve been phenomenal.”

Rangers missed out on Mirko Ivanic

Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Mirko Ivanic throughout the transfer window but he ended up staying with Red Star Belgrade, which is a blow as he seems to be the sort of player who Steven Gerrard would have loved to have at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

The Scottish Sun tipped Rangers to complete a £3m move for the Montenegro international in the recent transfer window, with the Gers reportedly seeing a bid rejected. However, it seems as if any hopes they had of signing him ended with the early Champions League exit against Malmo, which reportedly cost the club as much as £40m.

Following that defeat against the Swedish champions, it was reported that Rangers may be forced to cash in on some of their more valuable players in order to balance the books at Ibrox. However, Gerrard was able to keep hold of his first team mainstays, with only George Edmundson and Jordan Jones sealing permanent moves away.

Therefore, perhaps it was always unlikely that Rangers would splash out £3m on Ivanic, which is a shame as his performances last season suggest that he could’ve been a superb addition to Gerrard’s squad.

Would Ivanic have been a good signing?

Ivanic was in superb form in the 2020/21 campaign for Red Star Belgrade, contributing a remarkable 20 goals and 16 assists in all competitions for the Serbian outfit.

He is showing no signs of slowing down so far this season, with four goals and one assist to his name in 12 games for the club, predominantly from an attacking midfield position.

The 27-year-old has proven himself capable of playing in nearly every midfield and attacking position in his career thus far, and his versatility suggests that Gerrard would’ve loved to have a player like him at Ibrox for the 2021/22 campaign, especially when you consider that Rangers have struggled to break down opponents on a number of occasions already this season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Despite their domination last term, goals from central midfield were a rarity in Gerrard’s side, as Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield all struggled to find the back of the net on a regular basis. Ivanic certainly could’ve offered the 41-year-old a different, more prolific option in the middle of the park.

Arsenal: Ornstein issues Bellerin update

Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin wants to leave the club, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein dropped the surprising claim to Twitter on Monday, where he revealed that the Spaniard has been left frustrated by the club’s reluctance to sanction his departure.

It’s thought that the 26-year-old defender has informed both Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar of his intentions to leave the Emirates Stadium before the end of the transfer window this month. He’s even said to be willing to take a pay cut.

The Gunners failed to reach an agreement with Inter Milan over a potential deal, whilst Bellerin’s representatives have provided the technical director with possible destinations but none have come to fruition thus far.

One idea is to include the £22.5m-rated Spain international in a swap deal, with Barcelona’s Emerson Royal and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier two likely targets.

Frustrating update

Arsenal’s unwillingness to offload Bellerin isn’t likely to go down well with the Gunners’ faithful, particularly as the north London outfit have largely struggled to get rid of their deadwood throughout the summer.

For example, Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira is AWOL in Spain despite not returning to Atletico on loan. Willian has been linked with an exit but no one appears to be willing to pay his extortionate wages. Sead Kolasinac, Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are just three others that the club are still unable to move on.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-arsenal-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2” title= “Read the latest Arsenal team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

What perhaps makes this situation surrounding Bellerin even more intriguing is the fact that Arteta looked to left-back Nuno Tavares to replace Calum Chambers, who started on the right against Brentford, despite having the Spaniard, Cedric and Maitland-Niles available to him.

As predicted above, this news has not gone down well with some members of the Emirates Stadium fanbase, as seen by the responses to Ornstein’s tweet.

“Story of our window,” exclaimed one supporter, whilst another described Arsenal as a “shambles of a club,” with one further fan blaming the board for their “failure.”

Bellerin has played 239 times for the Gunners since joining the club from Barcelona as a youth player in 2011. However, in recent times, he has found game-time hard to come by – largely due to injuries.

Last season, he only started 24 league games, whilst in 2019/20, it was just 13 starts due to his ACL injury and a further hamstring problem.

On this evidence, it’s no wonder that some fans and the player himself are seeking a fresh start, though Arteta and Edu’s current stance is a perplexing one which will only frustrate everyone around north London even more.

Danish Kaneria, the Pakistan legspinner, will be out of action for six weeks after undergoing a finger surgery. Kaneria, contracted to Essex, will miss their remaining matches of the season.Kaneria fractured his finger in Essex’s County Championship game against Worcestershire on August 22, and flew back home for the operation, which took place on Wednesday.”There was a fracture in my right hand ring finger which I sustained while taking a caught-and-bowled chance,” he told . “I have had the surgery to set it right,” he said. “Hopefully I should be bowling again after six weeks.”Kaneria was disappointed to be missing out, with him unlikely to play for Pakistan this year. A regular in the Test team, Kaneria had taken 220 wickets in 51 Tests, but has only featured in 18 ODIs, the last of which came in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. “Already Pakistan is not playing a Test series this year and we are short of cricket,” he said. “The injury has really come at a bad time.”Pakistan haven’t played a Test this year, after Australia postponed their visit citing security concerns. In July, Kaneria had dismissed rumours that he was switching allegiance to England. He had been reprimanded by the PCB in April for criticising them after he was demoted to category C among Pakistan’s centrally-contracted players.Kaneria had not been included in Pakistan’s preliminary squad of 30 for the Champions Trophy, which has been deferred to 2009.

Celtic may have a new Turnbull in Moffat

In the early stages of the season, it looked as though Celtic midfielder David Turnbull was already running on empty.

The Hoops star was a near ever-present figure in the side after signing last season and then didn’t have much time off during the summer after travelling to Euro 2020 with Scotland.

Turnbull didn’t play a single minute for Steve Clarke’s side but his form in recent weeks is proving that he’s surely not far off a regular place in the national team.

He has gone from a tired and lapse figure to the heartbeat of the team again in a matter of weeks. Pundits and supporters are running out of superlatives for the magician who is scoring goals and assisting them on a regular basis.

The Scot found the net ten times last term but he’s already closing in on that number after just nine games of the new campaign.

His form has been simply mesmeric and a first senior hat-trick against St Mirren last weekend capped things off.

That means that Turnbull now has five goals and an assist in his last four appearances.

At the age of just 22, the attacking midfielder has a rather large ceiling and if he keeps performing like this, teams from south of the border will no doubt start dialling the phone.

Fortunately, Celtic have a like-minded player in their Colts team at the moment.

That happens to be 19-year-old Owen Moffat, a teenager who earned minutes in pre-season and is now starring in the Lowland League for Celtic B.

Like Turnbull, Moffat is a tricky goalscoring midfielder. He caught the eye during Ange Postecoglou’s first few weeks in charge and the Australian will no doubt be keeping a close watch on the youngster.

After all, Hoops skipper Callum McGregor already loves what he sees from the curly-haired assassin.

Speaking a few months back after he scored in a friendly, McGregor said: “A mention for young Moffat – his attitude has been first class. I remember watching him at the end of last season, training on the astro himself. Every day they would do finishing and I remember thinking: ‘He’s got a finish on him’.

“I wasn’t surprised when the ball dropped and he half-volleyed it into the net.”

His confidence has soared this season and he’s been finding the net on a regular basis for the B team. The midfielder has performed to such a high level that he bagged five goals in one game when they defeated Vale of Leithen 10-0.

He started the clash on the left-hand side where he scored once but was then moved into a central role and scored four more, dominating the defence in remarkable fashion.

“It was a good performance from the team. In the first half, it was a good five goals and when we went in at half-time Tommy and Darren just told us to keep going, we had to be relentless, and that’s what we did,” Moffat remarked at full-time.

That kind of relentless attitude is bound to fit in with Postecoglou’s style of play. After all, the senior side have been keen to score as many as possible in recent weeks.

They’ve beaten the goalkeeper on 24 occasions in their last six matches and have had a mighty 72 attempts at goal in their last two domestic ties.

Therefore, Moffat would surely make a seamless transition to first-team life once the manager decides to unleash him.

Like Turnbull, the teen has wonderful technical ability and he knows where the back of the net is. He’s certainly one to watch out for in the next few years.

Sangakkara ton sets up 64-run win

Kumar Sangakkara’s flawless century was backed by a disciplined bowling performance as Sri Lanka took a giant stride towards the final with a comfortable 64-run win over Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi. Sohail Tanvir’s five-wicket haul couldn’t prevent Sri Lanka from piling 302 for 7, and a lacklustre batting performance all but ended Pakistan’s hopes by the halfway mark of their chase. For the hosts, a win here was crucial and the result severely dents their chances of progressing to the final.Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan captain, opted to field today, perhaps wary after India had chased 300 in their previous game. However, once again his bowlers failed to make an impact barring Tanvir, who varied his pace and angle of attack intelligently. He got precious little support from the other bowlers, and the batsmen picked easy runs on a docile pitch. In contrast, each of Sri Lanka’s bowlers played their part on a slowing track to limit Pakistan to 238 for 9. After the fast bowlers had throttled the runs, Ajantha Mendis sliced through the middle order with his bag of tricks to completely derail the chase.Sangakkara’s ninth ODI century – his second of the tournament – was the fulcrum of Sri Lanka innings, and the three sizeable partnerships he was in involved in boosted Sri Lanka to a 300-plus total. Sanath Jayasuriya was trapped lbw by the impressive Tanvir early, but the old firm of Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene set about steadying the innings with a 40-run stand. The pair rarely had to take any risks, watchful against the good deliveries and putting away the loose ones on offer. As Sri Lanka progressed smoothly, Tanvir was brought back in the 14th over and he made an immediate impact, getting Jayawardene to cut one to Misbah-ul-Haq at point. That brought in Chamara Kapugedera, who gave Sangakkara solid support, sensibly working the singles while using his feet to unleash a couple of huge sixes.Sangakkara was his usual classy self, compiling his runs in an assured manner, with an impeccably-timed push down the ground for four off Tanvir being the highlight of his knock. He was initially content playing from the crease against the spinners but danced down the track to them as the innings progressed.Kapugedera had moved to 43, and added 88 for the third wicket, when he perished attempting to sweep a ball from outside off, only to top-edge it to midwicket, handing debutant legspinner Mansoor Amjad his first ODI wicket. Chamara Silva didn’t learn from Kapugedera’s dismissal and was lucky to see a sweep fly to the third-man boundary. With Malik sending down some hit-me deliveries and the other spinners ineffective as well, Sangakkara and Silva kept the runs flowing. Yet again Malik turned to Tanvir to limit the damage, and the bowler responded by removing Silva with a delivery that angled in. After bringing up his hundred, Sangakkara threw his bat around before being bowled by Tanvir for 112. Thilan Thushara justified the decision to send him ahead of Tillakaratne Dilshan by crashing a 20-ball 28.Five statsSohail Tanvir’s 5 for 48 is the first five-wicket haul in ODIs. This was his first game against Sri Lanka.Kumar Sangakkara’s 112 was his second hundred in the tournament, and his second against Pakistan.Sri Lanka’s 302 for 7 is their second-highest score in Pakistan. The best, 357 for 9, came against Bangladesh earlier in the tournament.Ajantha Mendis’ 4 for 47 came on the back of his 5 for 22 against UAE. That after he had gone wicketless in two innings. Salman Butt’s first-ball duck was his second no-show in the tournament. He has scored just 35 runs in three innings. In quest of what would have been their most successful chase against Sri Lanka, Pakistan got off to the worst possible start when Salman Butt inside-edged Chaminda Vaas’ first delivery on to his stumps. Only three runs had come off the first three overs before Malik and Younis Khan peppered the off side with boundaries to plunder 26 runs off the next two.Just as the hosts thought the floodgates had been opened, Sri Lanka hit back with a bunch of miserly overs to maintain the stranglehold. Vaas and Nuwan Kulasekara bowled a tight line and length, and once Thilan Thushara recovered from a poor start to curb the runs, the pressure began to tell. After Younis fell miscuing a pull to midwicket, Mohammad Yousuf and Malik consolidated, picking up the singles, but struggled to keep up with the asking-rate. With the pitch assisting spinners as the match wore on, Mendis added to his growing reputation by deceiving Yousuf (19) with a straighter one and Malik (52) with a legcutter.By the time Shahid Afridi got out to a customary ill-advised swipe, the asking-rate had ballooned to nearly ten and there was no way back for Pakistan. All Misbah’s 70-ball 76, during which he repeatedly carted the spinners over midwicket, could do was make the margin of defeat a little more respectable.India and Sri Lanka are now both on four points, and Pakistan will have to win both their remaining Super Four matches to keep alive their thin hopes of qualifying for the title clash.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will meet on July 24 and 25 to discuss what its president Julian Hunte considers a crisis in their cricket. The board will ask the team management, specifically coach John Dyson, about how they plan to improve the technical skills of the players to make them competitive on the international circuit.Dyson had said that West Indies, “compared to the other side, lack some batting skills, some bowling skills and some fielding skills”, after they conceded an unbeatable 3-0 lead to Australia in the five-ODI series. West Indies also lost the three-Test series to Australia 2-0.”We want our team to be number one both in performance and emoluments,” Hunte, who is currently in Dubai for the ICC’s annual conference, said. “However, if we do not start winning we run the risk of being relegated and we will not be able to earn the money that we require to regain our place at the pinnacle of world cricket.”We need to synchronise all our various efforts and plans to achieve the short-term objective of getting higher up in the rankings,” Hunte said. “We have to widen our pool of talent, have a clearly stated and objective selection philosophy, increase the amount of cricket played at the regional level, and improve the standard of the players and teams in our tournaments, and we must do it all very quickly. If not, we will not be creating history, as we did in the past. We will be history.”At the meeting, the board will also consider the Cricket Committee’s recommendations for a new selection panel, since the contracts of the members of the current panel expired on June 30.

PCB defers decision on Rashid

LAHORE, Nov 14: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) known for making mind-boggling decisions without taking into pros and cons has once again deferred the fate of Rashid Latif till Saturday. This is the third time that PCB has changed its stance on injury-prone 34-year old Rashid since the first choice wicketkeeper went to Zimbabwe nursing a neck injury. Whether the team management knew of his injury or not is another matter.A PCB spokesman said Thursday that Rashid will go through more tests on his troubled neck vertebra at Johannesburg in order to diagnose the real trouble.PCB chairman a few days earlier, had announced that Rashid would return home to be treated by PCB’s panel of doctors. But surprisingly now the decision has been delayed till Saturday which shows the mindset of PCB.Earlier the PCB chief had instructed the team management to ensure Rashid receives best possible medical treatment in South Africa.

Stephen Lamb30-Jul-2002Warwickshire Bears’ hopes of putting further pressure on the Division One leaders in the Norwich Union League were extinguished under the Canterbury floodlights, as Kent Spitfires won a rain-affected game by 13 runs to lift themselves away from the relegation zone.Set a revised target of 144 off 22 overs after a heavy storm extended the break between innings, the Bears were over-eager to leather the ball around the park, rather than rely on a regular flow of singles to keep the scoreboard ticking, and they lost key wickets steadily.Neil Carter, promoted to open, hit boundaries in each of the two opening overs before missing a straight ball from Martin Saggers. Dougie Brown, also moved up the order in search of quick runs, was run out, sent back by Nick Knight, who had lost sight of the ball following an attempted pull.Paul Nixon, who had a fine evening behind the stumps, then made the first of four key dismissals as Ian Bell tried to drive Matthew Fleming. Knight, who had already survived two referrals, departed in similar fashion. Although the arrival of Jim Troughton prompted a brief escalation in the run rate, Troughton was caught behind off Andrew Symonds after briefly threatening to take control of the match. When Trevor Penney went the same way, trying to run Fleming down to third man, the Bears were 89 for seven.Neil Smith and Keith Piper then showed the virtues of accumulation, to bring Warwickshire a little hope too late. Smith was yorked by James Golding with 21 still needed, and after Nick Warren was caught at long-on there was too much for Piper to do. He was last out, lbw to a Symonds yorker for 17.The Spitfires’ innings included a flurry of wickets at the start and finish. They lost skipper Matthew Fleming in the first over, caught by Carter as he top-edged a pull, but that did nothing to curb Kent’s aggression while the fielding restrictions were in place. Rob Key found the rope twice before he was lbw, also to Warren, who took his third wicket when James Hockley was caught behind for 21 (16 balls), trying to add to a tally of five boundaries.Matthew Walker entered to exercise due caution, and with Symonds put together much the most substantial partnership of the innings. The latter was characteristically hard to pin down – Brown and Alan Richardson were deposited over the ropes at mid-wicket and long-on respectively. There was a touch of the curate’s egg about the Bears’ fielding – excellent at times (Penney and Troughton stood out), pedestrian at others.Symonds went for 46, losing his off stump playing back to Richardson, but Walker accelerated after a stodgy start. After being missed on 46 – a stinging return catch to Smith – he caused hilarity next ball by accidentally throwing his bat several yards away without making contact. Four more followed to complete a 96-ball 50, and a massive six in the same over off Smith. On Walker’s departure, lbw to Brown for 75, the Kent innings faded. Without Mark Ealham, who was left out for disciplinary reasons, they went from 193 for four to 217 for nine. Geraint Jones got a bottom edge to Piper, Nixon and Masters both perished having a swing, and Golding, lifting his foot late, was beautifully stumped by Piper. Like Nixon, Piper shone behind the stumps, but at the end of the evening it was the home keeper who was smiling.
