WHU fans rage at Newman update

Many West Ham United fans were raging after an update emerged about their incoming Head of Recruitment Rob Newman.

The Hammers enjoyed a fantastic 2020/21 season, finishing sixth in the Premier League and duly qualifying for the Europa League. However, despite now having to compete on four fronts, the Irons are yet to make a new summer signing as we approach the start of the new campaign.

With the arrival of Newman from Manchester City, West Ham will have been hoping to swiftly kick on with their transfer business. However, as per Claret & Hugh, Newman has been placed on gardening leave at the Etihad Stadium and will therefore not be able to join up with the east London club until the January transfer window.

The news was shared on Twitter by Claret & Hugh’s Sean Whetstone via his account @westhamfootball, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. These took to the social media platform to share their thoughts, with some taking aim at the club’s much-maligned GSB ownership and one describing the situation as a “shambles”.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about the Newman update

Murali has 60 percent chance to play in second Test says Kountouri

Saadi Thawfeeq20-May-2002Sri Lanka’s world class spinner Muttiah Muralitharan’s chances of playing against England in the second cricket Test commencing at Edgbaston 11 days from today was put down as 60 percent by team physio Alex Kountouri, who will begin a period of rehabilitation with the bowler to get him back on the road again. For the past four weeks since he fell on his left arm and injured it in the one-day final at Sharjah against Pakistan, Muralitharan’s had his arm in a sling almost up against his chest. The sling came off after he arrived here on Saturday and Kountouri who examined him said: “He is better than I expected him to be. He’s got a fairly good movement of his arm and he’s got very little pain. For the moment his arm is still stiff because he hasn’t moved it for four weeks. We have got to get him working and hopefully, get some of the strength and movement back very quickly”.For the four weeks of recuperation, Muralitharan was treated by a specialist in Melbourne.Kountouri said Muralitharan did other work for his leg and stuff like that in Australia although his arm remained immobile. He said that Muralitharan would train three times a day to hopefully speed things up.”He will be doing basically strengthening exercises for his shoulder. He still can’t get his arm above his head. He will be undergoing hydrotherapy treatment trying to accelerate things. It depends how quickly he improves. I can’t see him bowling for another four to five days. He is not going to play in the next game before the next Test. It is going to be touch and go,” said Kountouri. “If he feels okay he will definitely play in the second Test. But at this stage it’s a bit too premature to say anything. I would say he’s got a sixty percent chance of playing. There is definitely and element of risk playing him without match practice. It all depends on how much pain he has.”We got him over here to give us an option to play him. As we get closer we’ll have a serious discussion with him, the coach, manager before taking af final decision. He’s a human being and he’s got a career ahead of him. If we can play him we will. if we can’t that’s it. The final decision is partly upto him and partly upto us,” he saidKountouri said Muralitharan was very positive and was keen to play. “He was very optimistic. It is a little bit of unknown quantity what he needs to do with his left arm. It all depends on how much of strain goes through when he bowls. We’ll find out very soon,” said Kountouri.

Bent claims Smalling not better than what Everton already have

Everton are spoilt for choice at centre back with Michael Keane, Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate all at the club, which means bringing in someone like Chris Smalling would not improve them, according to former striker Marcus Bent.

With the Toffees set to appoint Rafa Benitez as their new manager, he will likely look to build from the back and ensure that they are solid defensively, much like during his time with Newcastle United, so links with new centre backs may be expected.

Smalling fell out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer which saw him seal a move to Roma where he excelled during his initial loan spell with a 7.00 WhoScored rating, before seeing performances slightly dip last season with a 6.65 rating. However, that has not put off reports suggesting a move to Goodison Park could be on the cards.

Everton had the worst goal difference of any side in the top half of the Premier League last season but bringing in the 6 ft 4 former Red Devil would not add anything that they don’t already have, according to Bent who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“He’s no better than Keane, Mina or Godfrey so I don’t think they will replace any of them with him as I think they’re very happy with Keane, Godfrey and Mina.”

Despite spending £448.98 million in the last four seasons, it is likely that Everton will be looking to spend big against his summer to try and eventually crack into the top six, something West Ham achieved as they shopped smart in the transfer market.

The Toffees started last season like a train, losing just one of their opening eight fixtures but it was to be a false dawn as they ended the season in a disappointing 10th, behind teams such as Leeds United and West Ham.

AVFC: Ashley Preece provides transfer update

Aston Villa correspondent for Birmingham Live Ashley Preece has provided an exciting Villa Park transfer update, but admits there is ‘no chance’ on one of the club’s targets.

The Lowdown: Villa’s busy summer

Villa haven’t wasted any time in the current transfer window.

They’ve already brought in Emiliano Buendia in a club-record deal, while also signing Ashley Young on a free transfer.

Argentine forward Julian Alvarez has been linked with a move to the Midlands, along with Southampton duo James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu.

Buendia and Young won’t be the club’s only additions this summer, according to Preece, who provided an update on social media.

The Latest: Preece’s update

Preece posted a link to his story on Twitter on Thursday lunchtime. Within his tweet, he admitted he is expecting Villa to make another two or three signings.

“Chewing the transfer fat & it’s a lively one! Villa still very much active in this window; expecting another two – possibly even three- additions; Smith Rowe remains unlikely; Alvarez an option; CDM & CB cover. #avfc Q&A happening now”

In the story, an update on Emile Smith Rowe was waiting, with Birmingham Live being told there is ‘no chance’ of signing the Arsenal midfielder.

Villa had a £25m offer turned down for the 20-year-old earlier this month and were preparing a second bid, but it doesn’t seem as if he’ll be moving to the Midlands.

The Verdict: Would it be wise to sign a ‘keeper?

It seems as if a defensive midfielder, centre-back and a forward could be the areas Villa add to before the season begins next month.

However, a backup goalkeeper could also be handy, especially with Tom Heaton set to leave the club when his deal expires at the end of the month.

He looks set to join Manchester United, which will leave Dean Smith with only Emiliano Martinez and Jed Steer as senior options.

Hopefully, Martinez will go through another campaign injury-free, however, if he is sidelined, Smith would then just have Steer to call on.

Signing an experienced shot-stopper who is happy to serve as cover may be a wise option, and there are plenty around on possible free transfers.

Ex-Leeds star slams Bielsa decision

Former Leeds United ace Jon Newsome has revealed his disappointment at Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to recall Kiko Casilla for the final two games of the season.

The Spaniard made just one appearance for Leeds in the Premier League prior to the last pair of fixtures, against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, when he played 180 minutes.

Casilla was found guilty of racially abusing Charlton Athletic player Jonathan Leko in September 2019 and was subsequently given an eight-match ban, per The Guardian.

Since then, he has routinely been left out by manager Marcelo Bielsa, prior to his surprise recall.

Bielsa did not exactly explain his decision but he did praise his behaviour as a player and a team-mate, per Leeds Live.

Newsome does not believe that the Spaniard’s selection can be justified, and felt that Bielsa’s decision reflected poorly on the club as a whole.

Indeed, Illan Meslier enjoyed a fantastic season in goal, keeping 11 clean sheets in 35 games at the age of just 21.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Newsome said: “What happened and what he was found guilty of, it’s a really important issue in society, not just the game of football. I found it a very difficult decision to understand, really.

“Meslier has had such a great season. Is Casilla leaving? Was it his chance to say goodbye?

“Well, if that was the case, surely you just play him in the last game of the season like he did with (Gaetano) Berardi and Pablo Hernandez.

“So yeah, it was a difficult one for me. And I think I sit with the majority of the players scratching my head and wondering why that decision was made. I don’t think it particularly reflected too well on the club.”

Tottenham eye Gabriel Jesus move

As per the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City as they plan to swiftly replace Harry Kane.

The Lowdown: Kane drops bombshell

On Monday, Kane told Spurs that he wishes to leave the club this summer (Sky Sports), which is a huge blow to Daniel Levy and whichever manager is appointed on a permanent basis to replace Jose Mourinho.

The north London outfit must now look for a replacement if Kane follows through on his wishes to leave.

The Latest: Spurs eye Jesus

One name on Spurs’ shortlist is believed to be Manchester City striker Jesus, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Brazil international has been targetted as a part-exchange for Kane given that a straight cash deal for the England international will be hard to come by.

The Verdict: Interesting option

Jesus has come in for criticism from portions of the City fanbase this season, but he is a striker who knows how to find the back of the net. In 192 matches for the Citizens, he has 81 goals (Transfermarkt) – an impressive record when you consider he has not always been a guaranteed starter.

Throughout his career for club and country, he has 122 goals in 284 games – there are few forwards who can boast a better strike rate at such a high level. Furthermore, City manager Pep Guardiola called him “incredible” earlier this year (The Independent).

Currently valued at £54m (Transfermarkt), an exchange between Kane and Jesus could work well for all parties. The former would get his wish to move on, while Spurs would be getting a quality, and younger, forward as part of the agreement.

In other news, Levy wants to hire this Champions League winner as Tottenham’s new manager.

Catches win a vital match for West Indians

Catches win matches, the old adage says. And, insofar as it is ever possible to prove that theory, then West Indies’ seventy-sevenrun victory (under the Duckworth/Lewis method) over Zimbabwe went a long way toward doing so at the Adelaide Oval tonight.Chasing a difficult target of 253 from a maximum forty-seven overs, Zimbabwe was mounting a significant attack upon it whenspinner Mahendra Nagamootoo, sideways and hard to his left, thrust out an outstretched hand to haul in a breathtaking catch andremove star batsman Andy Flower (50) in the midst of the evening session.

MahendraNagamootoo

And later, captain Jimmy Adams produced another remarkable catch, even to the point of nearly knocking himself out as he crashedto the ground with the ball, running back from mid wicket to intercept a lofted stroke played toward mid on by Dirk Viljoen (7).They were two wonderful efforts that underlined a crucial difference in the Carlton Series encounter between the sides today.Together with his brother Grant (41), Flower had conceived a steadying partnership of ninety for the fourth wicket that had lookedto be easing Zimbabwe back into the match. Following the early departures of Guy Whittall (17), Alistair Campbell (20) and StuartCarlisle (4) to disappointing strokes, the pair serially cut, nudged and drove a steady attack to distraction. At least, that was, untilNagamootoo’s intervention.Coming as it did in the thirty-fifth over and with the Zimbabweans at the respectable scoreline of 3/137, the leg spinner’s freakishcaught and bowled certainly loomed large among the defining points of the match. It was the first of his four wickets and triggered adramatic decline during which seven tumbled in total for the addition of a paltry thirty-eight runs. Accordingly, it might also carrycrucial implications for the tight battle for second place behind Australia that continues in this three-cornered series. But no mention of Nagamootoo’s effort would be complete without acknowledgment of Adams’ endeavours nor of three bad misses,by contrast, from the Zimbabweans earlier in the day.Continuing their dismal run in the field in this series – a run which stands in stark contrast to the reputation that they possess forbeing a good fielding team – the Zimbabweans committed the sin of granting two lives to Brian Lara (70) and another to MarlonSamuels (68) that were critical in the final analysis.Diving forward at mid wicket, Gavin Rennie failed to clutch a mistimed pull when the brilliant left hander’s score was on ten. Then, with Lara at twenty-two, slip fieldsman Campbell seemed to barely even lay so much as a fingernail on a thick outside edged shot ashe pressed forward at leg spinner Brian Murphy. Later – with Samuels at forty-seven, to be precise – another catch went downwhen Carlisle misjudged the flight of a lofted on drive at Viljoen, charging forward from his position on the rope to try and interceptthe stroke but somehow finding himself too far in from the boundary and having to desperately throw out an outstretched right hand. For a side whose bowlers looked increasingly unthreatening on a benign pitch, luxuries such as dropped catches did not need to befrittered away so recklessly. With the temperature hovering in the high thirties on the Celsius scale, Lara and Samuels slowly wore down an attack that struggledto produce a great deal in the way of menacing deliveries. Both started a touch hesitantly – Lara played well away from his bodyinitially and Samuels was somewhat uncertain outside the line of off stump – but gradually assumed control. At the venue where hescored a sparkling 182 in a Test match earlier in the summer, Lara was arguably the more impressive of the two batsmen, sprinklingattacking strokes all around the ground. But Samuels also played well, especially forward of the wicket on the off side.In a whirlwind flurry before a cool change and driving rain replaced the scorching heat, Ricardo Powell (33) and Nagamootoo (22*)then continued the West Indian charge. The break in the weather curtailed the innings at the forty-seven over mark but not beforethe score had reached a more than respectable 6/235. Under Duckworth/Lewis calculations, this total was revised upward to leavetheir opponents requiring an extra eighteen runs off the same number of overs for victory. In the end, though, far greater generosity on the part of officials and the West Indian fieldsmen would have been required for thetarget to be successfully pursued.

Pundit wants Leeds to sign Alex Moreno

Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell believes Alex Moreno would be a great replacement for Ezgjan Alioski at Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Alioski replacement required

Alioski is expected to move on at the end of the season, having reportedly agreed to join Turkish giants Galatasaray. That will leave Leeds needing to sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window, with a host of names linked with the Whites in recent months.

One of those is Real Betis defender Moreno, who has made 21 appearances in La Liga this season, chipping in with two assists to date.

The Latest: Campbell rates Moreno highly

Campbell believes the 27-year-old could be the ideal man to come in for Alioski as he outlined to Football Insider why the Real Betis left-back could be the perfect fit for Leeds:

“Moreno, he’s a good player. He’s naturally a left footer and he likes to gets up and down that wing as often as possible. He has that attacking ability that Leeds will be after.

“I think he would be a great signing for Leeds. I really like him.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Could Leeds do better?

Moreno is an experienced figure who could fill the Alioski-shaped void at Elland Road, but it could be argued that there are better options to be found.

The Spaniard’s shortage of assists suggests a lack of attacking thrust – Marcelo Bielsa would surely want a forward-thinking full-back in the mould of Alioski – with an average of just 0.7 key passes per game in the league this season.

In comparison, Nicolas Tagliafico, another Leeds target, has averaged 1.1 key passes per match for Ajax in the Eredivisie, also getting one goal and three assists.

Moreno seems to be a solid transfer target, but Tagliafico appears the more experienced, superior choice if the Whites want to go up another gear in the Premier League next season.
