Western Australia’s batting has been a problem again this season but Towers made sure it was in good shape today, beating his previous best of 49, to steer his team to 4 for 244.Aged 21 and in his eighth first-class game, Towers showed maturity to hold the innings together after the Warriors were in some early discomfort at 2 for 65. The captain Adam Voges then chipped in with 52, combining in a 106-run stand with Towers, before falling to Brett Geeves.Towers continued to build the total during a chanceless innings that included 16 fours and lasted 286 balls. It ended when he was caught behind off Luke Butterworth after the Tigers took the second new ball. Butterworth (2 for 43) was the most successful of the local bowlers, who kept the run-rate down to 2.54 an over.

Conte eyeing Spurs’ new Dembele in January

Antonio Conte wants Tottenham Hotspur to sign Weston McKennie, who is a very familiar name to sporting director Fabio Paratici…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim the 52-year-old manager ‘appreciates’ the Juventus midfielder ‘a lot’ and envisions him becoming ‘the new [Arturo] Vidal’ under his stewardship.

At one stage, the 27-cap American looked destined to leave the Serie A giants this January but an exit is a little less certain after a breakthrough into the starting XI under Massimiliano Allegri in recent months.

However, the report claims that ‘anything can happen’ if Juventus receive a good offer for his services. It remains to be seen what sort of fee that could be, though Transfermarkt currently value him at £22.5m.

Watch out Skipp

Whilst Conte is said to be a massive fan of young Hotspur Way graduate Oliver Skipp, the arrival of McKennie in north London would certainly put his place amongst the starting XI at risk.

That ‘Vidal role’ is similar to what Mousa Dembele was so expertly deployed in during his time at the club, and the 23-year-old could certainly become a comparable player to the Belgian if he joins the club.

Described as an “outstanding talent” by former Schalke 04 boss David Wagner, McKennie is capable of being an absolute powerhouse across the engine room. “In the No.6 or No.8 position he has the mentality, a real working mentality that you need. And he’s brave on the ball as well. He can be one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga,” he added.

No other central midfielder is averaging a better WhoScored rating (6.73) for Allegri this campaign, whilst he attempts 2.2 tackles, makes 1.2 interceptions and manages 1.3 dribbles per 90 in the Italian top-flight.

This shows that not only is he a dominant ball-winning maestro but one that can drive the ball forward to contribute in the final third, much like Dembele under Mauricio Pochettino all those years ago.

Also dubbed a “leader” by Wagner and a “rock” by ex-Juve boss Andrea Pirlo, McKennie would be. an astute signing for sporting director Fabio Paratici to make but the consequence may fall at Skipp’s feet due to the two players occupying the same position.

It would be hard for Conte to axe Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as he is currently their best-performing player in the Premier League, earning a 7.15 rating, which is even more than top goalscorer Heung-min Son.

Therefore, it’s likely that the 21-year-old gem is most at risk, having garnered a rating of just 6.46, even if that’s a little unfair on his true performances.

Although, later down the line a duo of Skipp and McKennie could grace the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for years to come. It’s just in the short-term that he could be impacted severely, should the American join in January.

A equipe volta a treinar nesta sexta-feira.

Romano provides Van de Beek update

Manchester United are reportedly set to part ways with midfielder Donny van de Beek over the January transfer window after a torrid 18-month spell.

What’s the story?

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford since the summer after struggling for game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he finally seems set to seek pastures new.

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, there are ‘many clubs interested’ in van de Beek’s services, and the creative talent is planning to leave the red half of Manchester in search of regular game time.

He tweeted: “Donny van de Beek has never been offered to Real Madrid. There are many clubs interested, but no talk, proposal or negotiation with Real Madrid as things stand #MUFC. The plan is still to leave Man Utd in January if he’s not gonna be involved in Solskjær team in the next weeks.”

Man Utd fans will be gutted

After securing a domestic double with boyhood club Ajax and playing a pivotal part in their run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, Van de Beek’s arrival on English shores the following year was greeted with much excitement amongst the United fanbase.

His record of 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 appearances for the Amsterdam club pointed to a player who was more than capable of making the step up to the demands of the Premier League, yet things haven’t worked out as planned.

Van de Beek was unable to force his way into Solskjaer’s starting XI last term, featuring from the off on just 15 occasions in all competitions, but his game time has been even more limited in the current campaign.

The technically gifted talent has received just 154 minutes of action across five outings, completing 90 minutes just once in a third-round Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of West Ham United.

And now, it appears as though an imminent exit is on the cards for van de Beek as the winter window fast approaches, something that will leave large sections of Red Devils supporters feeling gutted.

His previous exploits at Ajax and several promising cameo appearances at United have shown his truly top-class potential, and yet he seems destined to fulfil that promise elsewhere after not receiving the opportunity to demonstrate his potential in the red half of Manchester. This is a sorry saga, one that will surely leave fans rather dejected.

Liverpool: Thiago must start vs West Ham

After maintaining their 100% record in the Champions League this season with the 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid in midweek, Liverpool are back in Premier League action on Sunday with a tough fixture against West Ham United, who are currently fourth in the table, just two points behind the Reds.

Thiago must start

Looking ahead to the match against David Moyes’ side, one Liverpool player who we think should be in the running for a place in the starting XI on Sunday is Thiago Alcantara.

After missing a significant number of games in recent weeks with a calf injury, the midfielder made his return to action in midweek after replacing Fabinho in the second half against Atletico.

During his time on the pitch in midweek, the 30-year-old – who has been described as “unbelievable” in terms of his technical abilities in the past by fellow Liverpool teammate Nat Phillips – had 57 touches of the ball. He also completed 46 of his 53 passes – with one key pass, one accurate cross and four accurate long balls – as well as completing one accurate dribble, showing how intricate a midfield asset he can be for the Reds and illustrating why Phillips praised his technical capabilities.

This could make him a key component of Liverpool’s team at the weekend considering that West Ham have conceded more goals (11) than any other team in the current top four and could be susceptible to Thiago’s creative talents, with the 30-year-old frightening them to some extent.

Furthermore, the Spaniard won two out of his three duels and made one interception on Wednesday night. With West Ham scoring 20 goals in 10 league games, this highlights how important it will be for Liverpool to keep possession and remain defensively tight throughout the game.

Overall, if Thiago is fit enough to start at the weekend, we think he would give Liverpool a great chance of beating the Hammers and keeping up with Chelsea at the top of the table.

Also, with Liverpool having Naby Keita and James Milner ruled out with hamstring injuries, it seems as though now would be the best time for Thiago to cement his place in the team for the foreseeable future.

Clubs eyeing up WBA youngster Reyes Cleary

Exciting West Brom youngster Reyes Cleary is being watched by a number of top clubs, according to reliable journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Cleary catching the eye

The Baggies have a hugely talented young player in their ranks, with Cleary impressing for the under-23s so far this season.

The 17-year-old has scored twice in four Premier League 2 appearances in 2021/22, as well as having an overall record of 16 goals in 20 games for the under-18s.

Cleary is still waiting to make his first team bow, but it may not be too far away if he continues to perform at his current level.

The Latest: Hatfield provides update on Cleary

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Hatfield of The Express & Star discussed the teenager’s future at The Hawthorns, admitting that he is regarded highly by Albion but other clubs are watching him closely. The journalist said:

“By the sounds coming out of the club, they rate him highly. He looks like a player who knows where the back of the net is at youth level.

“We’ll see how he develops, of course, because plenty of youngsters shine at that level, and maybe don’t kick on to the first-team setup and manage to do that.

“But we’ll see what happens with him. It can only be a good sign that clubs are interested and are being linked with him.”

The Verdict: Keep him at Albion

Cleary looks a hugely gifted talent with a bright future ahead of him, so it is vital that West Brom tie him down for as long as possible.

He is yet to sign a professional contract with the Baggies and it is important that that changes soon, ensuring that he has a large buyout clause in the process.

It may be tough for them to keep hold of Cleary forever, but for the time being, he should be viewed as a possible future regular at The Hawthorns.

Four Lyon players ruled out of Rangers trip

An update on Lyon’s squad availability has emerged ahead of their clash with Rangers later in the week.

What’s the latest?

According to the injury list on SportsGambler, via Sports Lens, the quartet of Tino Kadewere, Leo Dubois, Lenny Pintor and Jeff Reine-Adelaide have all been ruled out for Lyon ahead of their trip to Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard’s side take on the Ligue 1 outfit in the Europa League on Thursday and all four of those players are due to miss out because of injury.

Gerrard will be buzzing

Gerrard will be buzzing with this update as it means that it’s not only his side who are struggling with availability. Rangers look set to be without Filip Helander, Ianis Hagi and Connor Goldson for various reasons, which is concerning ahead of the game, but the head coach’s worries could be eased knowing that their opponents also have issues of their own.

Young forward Pintor being out is not a major blow for Lyon, as he has only made one very brief Ligue 1 appearance in his career, but Reine-Adelaide, Dubois and Kadewere have all proven themselves in the French top flight. The latter two both ranked in the top six in the Lyon squad based on WhoScored ratings (10 appearances or more) last season, with Dubois in fourth and Kadewere in sixth.

Kadewere in particular caught the eye as he bagged 10 goals and provided three assists in 24 Ligue 1 starts for Lyon. This means that the French outfit will be without a key goalscoring option for the trip to Glasgow, potentially improving Rangers’ chance of picking up a positive result.

Reine-Adelaide, meanwhile, was on loan at Nice in the same division and averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.90 in central midfield. He is now back at Lyon but will not be available for selection against Rangers on Thursday.

This illustrates that Peter Bosz’s side will be without three good options, with Dubois and Kadewere proving last season that they were among the club’s best performers. Therefore, Gerrard must be delighted that they will not be playing against his side on Thursday.

However, it is now up to Rangers to make the most of their opponents’ injury worries. Gerrard will surely be hoping for a positive start to the group to give them a platform on which to build heading into the rest of the matches throughout the autumn and winter.

Leeds wanted Rangers ace Kent

Alan Hutton has now revealed that Marcelo Bielsa wanted to sign Ryan Kent from Glasgow Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: James signed

Leeds United announced the signing of Dan James from Manchester United on Transfer Deadline Day, as it became clear that they were looking to sign a winger before the window shut.

The Yorkshire club have previously been linked with a move for Kent, and it is not clear whether they will revisit their interest in January after signing James.

The Latest: Hutton on Kent

Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues ace turned pundit Hutton has revealed that Bielsa was after Kent, and is relieved that he has ended up staying at Ibrox:

“Bielsa liked the likes of Ryan Kent and he was after him.

“They’ve (Kent and James) got similar traits. For him to come in with that pace and work ethic. He can score goals, he can assist.

“I was desperate for Kent to stay. I know he’s been a little bit up and down but he’s a fantastic player.

“He’s a key figure in that Rangers team. Over the moon that he’s stayed.”

The Verdict: Relief

It is certainly a welcome relief that Steven Gerrard’s team have managed to keep Kent on their books, despite interest from the Whites.

The Englishman scored no fewer than 13 goals and made a further 15 assists in 52 matches in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt), which are very impressive numbers for a wide player.

Nonetheless, at 24 years of age, his market value will surely only get bigger, and so the Gers can wait for him to reach his full potential before potentially selling him to a Premier League side for a huge profit.
