VIDEO: Jaden Philogene scores one of the best goals EVER – but outrageous nutmeg & rabona lob for Hull City will never be credited to him for cruel reason

Hull City star Jaden Philogene was cruelly denied one of the all-time great goals after a stunning Rabona strike against Rotherham.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old thought he'd scored the goal of the season when he nonchalantly nutmegged Rotherham's Oliver Rathbone and then tried an audacious Rabona chip over goalkeeper Viktor Johansson. After looking like he had produced something miraculous, it turned out his effort took a slight deflection off Cameron Humphreys' shoulder – meaning it was cruelly registered as an own goal by the Football League.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

That stupendous piece of skill from the former Aston Villa man drew Hull level with bottom of the table Championship side Rotherham, following Christ Tiehi's opener for the Millers. Then Liam Rosenior's men completed the comeback as Noah Ohio's goal secured the Tigers their first league double against the Yorkshire outfit for 40 years. Philogene's goal, that will have surely been a contender for the Puskas award, is undoubtedly one of the greatest rabona efforts ever seen, with Erik Lamela's strike for Tottenham against Arsenal – that won the Puskas award in 2021 – arguably at the top of the pile.

Hull are back in Championship action on Sunday away to lowly Huddersfield Town, before two crunch games against third-placed Southampton three days later, and a home clash against fifth-positioned West Brom on February 24.

Nicolas Jackson is ready to be Chelsea's main man! Five things we learned as the Blues' summer signing scores again in Newcastle draw

As he maintains his good pre-season form, the ex-Villarreal star is looking increasingly like the man to lead the line for Mauricio Pochettino's side

Much has been made of Chelsea's striker hunt this year, with a number of big names linked, but they might just have bought the right man already. Nicolas Jackson was once again impressive for the Blues, scoring the opener and proving a constant menace in an otherwise drab 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

The former Villarreal man continued his good run of form, opening the scoring inside 15 minutes, scampering beyond the Newcastle backline and finishing off a neat pass from Ian Maatsen. Chelsea could've had a second shortly after, but Christopher Nkunku dragged his effort just wide of the post.

Newcastle levelled things right before the break, with former Atlanta United winger Miguel Almiron grabbing a goal at his former home.

The second half was a markedly tighter affair. Jackson was removed, while Maatsen only lasted a further 20 minutes. Nkunku made things interesting, though, and challenged Nick Pope on a handful of occasions. A diving stop from the England goalkeeper in the 93rd minute ensured that Newcastle would hang on.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium…

Nico Jackson… again!

How long have Chelsea needed this? The Blues haven't really had a reliable striker since Diego Costa, with a series of imperfect fits and promising players all struggling to inherit the central role in the side. It's very early days, but Jackson looks like he might just be able to make it work.

He was up for it from the first minute on Wednesday. The former Villarreal man was caught offside while trying to dart beyond the Newcastle defence early on. But five minutes later, he timed his run to perfection, receiving a pass in stride and putting his side 1-0 ahead.

There was more to his performance than just goals, though. Jackson never stopped moving and got Fabian Schar booked after forcing the centre-back into a rash challenge. He also almost grabbed himself an assist after a fine piece of work on the right wing, too. These are small moments, but ones Chelsea fans can get excited about. Jackson could be the solution to a problem they've had for years.

AdvertisementReece James is back

Injury-prone right-back Reece James finally returned to training last week, and was thrust into the line up almost immediately here. The results were predictably mixed. At times, James was near his best, winning individual duels and hitting a series of cross-field balls.

But there were also some weaknesses. He was caught out of position on occasion and played the odd loose pass. This is all to be expected, though, from a player who hasn't been on the pitch for nearly four months — and missed half of last season.

Chelsea look a much-changed side this year, and the somehow James will be one of the most experienced members of the squad at just 23. If he can stay fit, and work his way back to form, the Blues will once again have one of the league's best full-backs at their disposal.

What to make of Mudryk?

Since arriving from Shaktar Donetsk in January, Mykhailo Mudryk has shown flashes, but has done little to suggest that he was worth the immense £89 million ($110m) price they paid for him. This pre-season, though, there are signs that he might just work out. His darting runs have come with smart passes. His mazy dribbles have finished with a shot.

These are small things, but they are also immense improvements for a player that looked lost a few months ago. And there was a lot to like here, too. He tortured Kieran Trippier for 45 minutes, and linked up well with Nkunku and Jackson.

There is a long way to go for the Ukrainian. He will undoubtedly need more time to develop, and the minutes will only help. For now, though, the signs are promising.

Miggy enjoys his homecoming

Almiron has had a bit of a mixed time at Newcastle, but finally made good on his potential last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals. And he returned to Atlanta in style, scoring the equaliser and putting in a solid performance on the right. He made life difficult for a rattled Marc Cucurella, who couldn't deal with his trickery or movement on the evening.

The Paraguayan won't have it easy this season. Newcastle are bringing in reinforcements to the side, and he will likely have to battle for his spot. Every pre-season game counts, then, and this was an immensely promising one for a fan favourite.

De Gea, Martial and the Man Utd players who could leave on a free transfer

Goal looks at the players whose deals are due to end, which of them could leave and who might still be at Old Trafford come 2019-20

Since 1995, the Bosman ruling has revolutionised football transfers, giving players the opportunity to break free of clubs at the end of their contracts, and the pre-contract agreement which has since been brought into the game means that from January 1 players with expiring deals can sign with potential new employers six months ahead of a move.

This January, Manchester United find themselves in the kind of position many clubs have been left in since Jean-Marc Bosman successfully petitioned the courts, with as many as 11 of their players holding contracts which are due to expire at the end of the current season.

The one thing they do have going for them is that eight of the 11 involved have club-option extension clauses written into their deals, which allows the Old Trafford hierarchy the freedom to add 12 months to their contracts if they are unwilling to let them go.

  • Getty Images

    Matteo Darmian

The Italian full-back barely gets a look-in at Old Trafford these days and Jose Mourinho admitted in the summer that United were ready to sell if the right offer came in.

"Matteo wants to leave and I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct, but not at any price," the manager said.

“And, until now, the offers we got for Matteo are not even close to being accepted."

The 28-year-old could well move in January if the right bid comes in having not made an appearance since the opening day of the season at a time when Mourinho was stretched due to post-World Cup holidays.

But if a winter move doesn't materialise, United are almost certain to trigger the one-year option on his contract to ensure he doesn't leave for free in the summer. They are still likely to help Darmian find a move though in order to get some return on their 2015 investment.

    David de Gea

Mourinho stunned the United fan base last week by claiming he was not confident that De Gea would sign a new deal with the club.

"I am not confident but I am not worried," he told in relation to the No.1 extending his contract. "I cannot find the word in English."

De Gea has played down speculation since then but notably failed to commit. "What matters is the team and all of us being focused on what we need to focus on, which is winning games, rather than contracts or any topics that can be a distraction," said the Spaniard.

With De Gea's contract due to expire in 2019, United do hold a one-year option. However, if there is no sign of a willingness on the player's part to sign a new deal then the club could be backed into a corner as this season draws to a close.

Not yet 28 and considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world, De Gea is a hugely valuable asset and the prospect of him running his contract down and leaving on a free is one United will not be keen to risk. They could even consider a sale in the summer to get a fee if they are convinced the former Atletico Madrid man has his heart set on leaving.

  • Getty Images

    Ander Herrera

The Spanish midfielder has seen his game-time reduced by a great degree over the last 18 months to the point where his only Premier League start so far this season came as an emergency centre-back in the 3-0 loss to Tottenham.

Having already seen the club pick up his one-year option last season, Herrera's commitment to the club could well end this summer although Jose Mourinho is keen for him and Juan Mata to stay at Old Trafford.

"Juan and Ander, even if they are not playing a lot and not starting matches, by the personality point of view and character point of view, by what they represent in the modern society and in football, they are almost unique pieces that I also don't want to lose," said the manager when asked whether he wants to keep the Spanish pair.

His character has won him countless fans since he arrived at United in 2014, but the 29-year-old may consider making a move to gain increased game time elsewhere if he believes his next contract to be his last during his peak playing years.

    Phil Jones

Like most United contracts, Phil Jones' deal includes a club option to tie him down to Old Trafford until the summer of 2020 and the Red Devils are highly likely to activate the extra year if only to command a fee for the centre-back next summer.

With competition for places at the heart of defence being fierce and Jose Mourinho having publicly discussed the need for more quality in his position, Jones has slipped down the pecking order and is likely to fall further down the ranks as United go forward.

As a result, the club could listen to offers in the summer once they have triggered their option, giving them the opportunity to cash in on the England defender before they are left facing the prospect of gaining no fee for him in 2020.

> Confira a classificação atualizada do Campeonato Brasileiro

I don't know what pressure means – Malinga

Lasith Malinga had arrived in New Zealand with a strapped-up ankle and a bum knee. He has not bowled a delivery in competitive cricket since September. Even before the hiatus, he had been some way from his best; low on pace and wayward, with a stomach bulging out ahead of him.All this would make for a low-key return, you would think, but Malinga has earned a reputation as Sri Lanka’s major tournament performer. The gold tinge in his hair rejuvenates ahead of each big event. The yorkers begin to fly fast and free, stumps wrecked, hat-tricks collected, toes bruised, and that aeroplane celebration dusted off with unusual intensity. On Saturday, Gary Ballance labeled Malinga “probably the best death bowler there has ever been”, and the man himself is meeting the attention with his usual bluster. Saddled now with transforming the Sri Lankan attack’s fortunes in New Zealand, Malinga said the expectations on him are nothing new.”I don’t know what pressure means,” he said. “I’m always used to pressure situations, so I wouldn’t even know what pressure is to talk about it. I want to have a free mindset and do what I can do. Throughout my career I haven’t been looking out where I’m playing or what are the conditions. We know it will be bouncy here, but I always trust my skill.”Malinga’s absence from international cricket had been forced by a long-term ankle complaint that had deteriorated to the point of requiring surgery. He had suffered a setback in his rehabilitation in December, but has gradually been increasing his bowling workload through January. Every step is still painful, Malinga said, but he is expected to be fully fit for the warm-up matches, against South Africa and Zimbabwe, and for the curtain-raiser against New Zealand on February 14.”In the last few days, I’ve been bowling with my full run up, and I feel like I have good rhythm. I don’t know about the pace, so we’ll find that out in the matches. Before the World Cup, I have to use these two warm-up matches to the maximum.”I haven’t had much skills preparation in the last few months, but I always do my mental preparation. I watched all my footage in the last two months and figured out what I needed to do.”Sri Lanka’s major-tournament fortunes have fluctuated with Malinga’s, to some extent, but on this occasion, his team-mates are quick to suggest they have other match winners in their attack too. Kumar Sangakkara said Rangana Herath was the best current spinner, while captain Angelo Mathews believed Sri Lanka were not totally reliant on Malinga.”You can’t write off the rest of the bowlers that we have,” Mathews said. “We’ve got fairly experienced bowlers, but Lasith is the X-factor. It’s just that in a one-off game, the others can also come into the party. We all expect Lasith to do well but I’m pretty sure with the amount of talent that we’ve got in the side, anyone can do the job for us.”Mahela Jayawardene took a similar view, emphasising the threat of the collective, but added that Malinga’s return boosted the know-how within the attack. Malinga had been the architect of the wide-yorker plan that brought Sri Lanka success in the World T20 final last year.”The others will feed off him,” Jayawardene said. “You saw in the World T20 how his ideas, and his management of the bowling unit in that situation was fantastic. Because of his experience, his presence will give us that extra 10 per cent to win the matches we had been losing. We’re a small nation, so it’s important we get everyone on the park.”Sri Lanka’s approach to the World Cup has been marred somewhat by a 2-4 loss to New Zealand. Mathews said his team had “found ways to lose matches rather than win them” in that series, and called for more consistency in all departments, but was unperturbed by the lowered expectations of his side.”We’re happy to walk into the World Cup as underdogs. No one really expects us to win.”

Gloucestershire end 28-year wait for New Road win

ScorecardChris Dent’s half-century saw Gloucestershire on their way to victory•Getty Images

A brilliant innings by former Minor Counties player Richard Oliver failed to prevent Worcestershire’s first County Championship defeat of the season as Gloucestershire registered their first victory at New Road since 1986.Oliver, the 24-year-old left hander, made a career-best 179 in four and a half hours enabled the Division Two leaders to wipe out a deficit of 184, but the West Country team were hardly challenged by a target of 177 and cruised home by seven wickets.Paceman Liam Norwell broke Worcestershire’s resistance in a new-ball spell of 4 for 16 and opener Chris Dent led the victory rush with his first half-century in three months after taking the key wicket of Oliver in his role as occasional left-arm spinner. Will Tavare made 33 in an opening stand of 67 before falling lbw to Joe Leach and when Dent was out for 51, driving Shaaiq Choudhry’s fourth ball straight to mid-off, Alex Gidman followed his first-innings century with an unbeaten 45 from 43 balls. Leach claimed his 30th wicket of the season when Gareth Roderick was caught behind for 25 but this was only a blip as Gloucestershire comfortably completed their third win of the season. The visitors made the running from the outset in dismissing Worcestershire before tea on the first day and as well as Oliver played, there was to be no way back. They are still favourites for promotion but their lead could be significantly trimmed if their closest rivals, Surrey and Hampshire, close out victories on Monday. It was unfortunate for Oliver that the latest chapter in a remarkable rise to a county contract should have coincided with one of the team’s least effective displays of the season. Originally drafted in from Shropshire in April because of an injury, he scored hundreds in successive innings for the second XI and in May he was in the county team in the run to the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-finals.A Championship debut arrived in June and having scored at least one half-century in each of four matches, he has accumulated 504 runs in his first eight innings in first-class cricket. Dedicated to the sport as an annual traveller to Australia to play for Melbourne club Geelong, he is refreshingly uncomplicated in his approach. If the ball is there to be hit, then more than often than not it is – and with some force.Gloucestershire’s bowlers will bear testimony to this, having seen Oliver plundering his first 50 in 41 balls and the third in 40. That the middle one was twice as long indicated a period of circumspection in approaching a maiden hundred. In all he hit 23 fours and one six, putting Worcestershire in front in the over he reached three figures. For much of his innings he was accompanied by Alexei Kervezee in Worcestershire’s highest partnership for any wicket this season. They put on 215 in 51 overs before Gloucestershire made a decisive breakthrough with their spinners. Kervezee had made 78 with a six and 10 fours when he tickled a catch to Gareth Roderick to give offspinner Mark Craig a first Championship wicket and in his next over the New Zealander claimed a second with Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s top edged to midwicket.Oliver was fifth out at 296, caught behind off Dent, and the seamers did the rest as the last five wickets disappeared for 39 from the time the new ball was taken. Of the lower order only Choudhry, with 30, seriously troubled Gloucestershire until caught at second slip off David Payne.Stand-in captain Gidman was proud to be the first man to lead Gloucestershire to a Championship victory at New Road in 28 years. “It’s a lovely place to play and I’ve been a few times but never won,” he said. “To have done that was really enjoyable. It was a challenging wicket but a good cricket wicket and we probably applied ourselves a little bit better over three days.”We had the best of the conditions. On the first day I didn’t think we bowled as well as we could but the boys kept going really hard.”Worcestershire’s assistant coach Matt Mason was delighted with Oliver’s impressive century. “He’s a breath of fresh air,” he said. “His approach to his cricket is amazing and he’s very positive. He’s fearless, that’s the way we describe him. It’s great for the people who are here watching as there’s never a dull moment when he’s at the crease.”He’s different as well. He doesn’t play an orthodox game and I think there’s room for people like that in any first class cricket team. His confidence and his belief that he belongs here is growing all the time.”
