O time de Abel Braga, desligado, vacilou.

Darren Gough: I'm fit and I'm leaner

Darren Gough has declared himself fit to play for England against Sri Lanka at Headingley in the fourth match of the NatWest triangular series. The Yorkshire fast bowler has been included in the England squad for the game after defying gloomy predictions about his fitness as recently as last week.”I’ve done all the stuff I’ve been asked to do, I’ve played, I’ve fielded andI’ve been bowling now every day for the last two weeks apart from a littlesetback I had on Monday when I decided to pull myself out of a game,” Gough said.”I’m going to have a little bit of discomfort for the next month to six weeks- when you come back from any surgery you’re going to get that – but Englandhave asked me if I’m fit and I told them I was so now it’s up to them whether Iplay or not.”Gough sustained the injury to his right knee in the final one-day internationalagainst New Zealand in Dunedin last February. Since then he has had two operations, and he admitted to worries about whether he would ever make an England return.”I think everyone worries they won’t get back when they have injuries,” he said.”I had plenty of time to get fit for the start of the season and I workedreally hard, but I probably tried to get back a little too quickly first time.”This time I’ve been held back a lot. They’ve sent me away to Lanzarote so Iwouldn’t be rushed and I trained there three times a day, and that’s brought meforward a couple of weeks in my recovery.”He also believes he is leaner than he has been at times in the past. “I’m lighter now than I was in the winter and lighter than I was last season.Aerobically I’m fit and I’m a lot stronger than I’ve been before because ofthe weight programmes I’ve been doing on my upper body.”People have seen me running around Old Trafford and think I’ve put on weightbut I had several sweaters on and I’m stronger and fitter because all my testswith England have proved that – if there was a problem I think England wouldhave been the first to tell me, and I’ve heard nothing from them.Gough is not too worried about making his comeback against world-class opposition. “People who know me and the way I bowl will know that I’m not one of those mechanical bowlers who have about 10 different trigger points – I just run up and bowl as fast as I can,” he said.”It’s going to be a bit different playing a one-day international againstworld-class players and you can go around the park against players like that, but I’m totally confident of not spraying down both sides of the wicket if Iplay.”I’ve only played one second team game, but they must have faith in meotherwise they wouldn’t have selected me in the squad.”

Memorable Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup Final moments

A chronicle of the outstanding moments, incidents and performances in the 19-year history of interstate first-class finals in Australia.

John Polack21-Mar-2002Outstanding moments, incidents and performances in the 19-year history of interstate first-class finals in Australia:1. Queensland v South Australia, Sheffield Shield Final 1994-95, Brisbane:After 63 years in the title wilderness, Queensland’s innings and 101 run win over South Australia in 1994-95 was as much an unrestrained expression of state pride as a match of cricket. All roads led to the ‘Gabba as an aggregate attendance of 47,296 basked in an early South Australian batting collapse; merciless batting from Trevor Barsby, Martin Love and Allan Border; and a methodical Queensland bowling and fielding effort in the game’s dying stages. It was close to Border’s last first-class match and, though Paul Nobes and Darren Webber offered spirited resistance, there was little doubt about which way it would end once the Bulls had reached a first innings score of 3/479 on the match’s third day. A catch by Carl Rackemann at backward point at 3:52pm on the final afternoon ushered in unprecedented scenes of celebration.2. South Australia v Western Australia, Sheffield Shield Final 1995-96, Adelaide:South Australia’s attainment, against the odds, of a draw in the 1995-96 Sheffield Shield Final against Western Australia surely ranks as one of the most amazing finishes to a match in Australian history. In front of a crowd estimated at close to 15000, last wicket pair Shane George and Peter McIntyre outlasted a desperate Western Australian attack for a period that spanned 40 minutes and 59 balls in order to save the match, give their state its first Sheffield Shield for 14 years, and usher in scenes of wild jubilation. The South Australians had devoted themselves to the task of merely protecting their eight remaining wickets on the last day but were in early bother when nightwatchman Jason Gillespie fell to a catch at the wicket and Darren Lehmann to a controversial lbw decision. Captain Jamie Siddons stayed at the wicket for 166 minutes while he played one scoring shot, though; more than an hour was eaten up by Tim May’s duck; and Greg Blewett and James Brayshaw also spent long periods at the crease. George and McIntyre were later drawn into celebrating with delirious intent after their twin vigil capped the Redbacks’ strategy of defiance. Earlier, Adam Gilchrist had reasserted his credentials as one of Australian domestic cricket’s most outstanding players by producing a breathtaking unbeaten 189 (from 187 balls) in Western Australia’s first innings.3. New South Wales v Queensland, Sheffield Shield Final 1984-85, Sydney:It was only the third interstate first-class final ever played but few if any of the deciders played since that time have been more dramatic or more closely tinged with tension. New South Wales’ one wicket win over Queensland in the Sheffield Shield Final in 1984-85 owed much to superb swing and seam bowling from import player Imran Khan and an outstanding opening partnership in the first innings between John Dyson and Steve Smith. Fine spin bowling late in the match from Murray Bennett also assisted immeasurably. But, most of all, it relied on a nerveless, unbroken union of 14 runs for the tenth wicket between Peter Clifford and Dave Gilbert. Clifford, who ironically later relocated to Queensland, played the hand of his career in holding the home team’s second innings together as it pursued a victory target of 220. Experienced pair Trevor Hohns and Carl Rackemann were the biggest threats to the Blues’ hopes – a first innings century and outstanding bowling on the match’s final day the defining features of their respective games. In emotional scenes, Clifford departed the SCG a hero while the Queenslanders were left to rue how desperately close they had come to securing their state’s first-ever first-class crown. It would be another decade before they finally laid the ghost to rest.4. Queensland v Victoria, Pura Milk Cup Final 1999-2000, Brisbane:The blood of Victorians still boils when they’re reminded of umpire Steve Davis’ rejection of a caught behind appeal against Queensland captain Stuart Law at a pivotal moment late on the opening day of the Pura Cup Final of 1999-2000. Law’s score was on 76 at the time and replays confirmed initial impressions that the right hander had emphatically outside edged a delivery from left arm paceman Mathew Inness. It helped Law continue on to register his maiden first-class hundred of the season and to join with twin centurion Martin Love in definitively batting the visitors out of the game. Albeit that swing bowler Andy Bichel’s clinical destruction of the Victorian upper and middle order later had just as much effect on the result.5. Queensland v Victoria, Pura Cup Final 2000-01, Brisbane:Twelve months on, an association between a Brisbane finals match, Stuart Law, and a controversial decision was playing on Victorian minds again when an outstanding attempt at a catch at third slip by Michael Klinger was ruled invalid. As Law walked out to bat early on the fifth morning, the Queenslanders had stumbled to a score of 3/139 in pursuit of a target of 224 to win. His first ball was played off an edge low to a diving Klinger’s right but television replays failed to prove or disprove the Victorians’ unanimous belief that the catch had been legitimately taken only inches above the turf. Third umpire Peter Parker had no option but to rule that Law should be given the benefit of considerable doubt. The Queensland captain stood his ground, proceeded to play and miss repeatedly, was caught off a no ball, dropped twice, and was ultimately still at the crease when the Bulls secured a tension-packed win with only four wickets to spare. Victorian captain Paul Reiffel was later relieved of $200 of his match fee for dissent.6. Western Australia v New South Wales, Sheffield Shield Final 1991-92, Perth:Justin Langer has played many outstanding innings during his years with Western Australia, Middlesex and Australia. But, for sheer quality, there have been few to surpass the brilliant 149 that he crafted under enormous pressure against New South Wales in the 1991-92 Sheffield Shield Final. The then 21-year-old displayed remarkable poise, putting the memory of a car crash on the third morning of the match behind him and standing firm for more than six hours amid a series of dramatic batting collapses that threatened – in turn – to dash the victory hopes of each of the two teams. Western Australia had trailed by 19 runs on the first innings and then courted almost-certain disaster in crashing to 3/3 a second time. But it was from this point that the implacable Langer took command, and his second first-class century formed the backbone of crucial stands of 91 for the fourth wicket with Damien Martyn and 191 for the seventh with Tim Zoehrer. Requiring 326 for victory, New South Wales reached 2/202 at one point before succumbing to a collapse of their own that saw seven wickets tumble as only 42 runs were added. Less than a year passed before Langer was in his country’s Test team.7. Western Australia v New South Wales, Sheffield Shield Final 1982-83, Perth:Prior to the 1982-83 Sheffield Shield Final, Western Australian victories over New South Wales in Perth had become commonplace. For the majority of the opening four days of the inaugural first-class finals match in Australia, it again looked like the Sandgropers were destined to claim the spoils. But the visitors were fired by a remark from rival captain Kim Hughes on their way off the field on the fourth evening. They returned the following morning with renewed purpose and aggression, triggering a dramatic late collapse from their opponents that resulted in a shock 54-run win to the Blues. Trevor Chappell, a late inclusion in the team after selectors had agonised over the decision to omit fiery paceman Len Pascoe from the line-up, was the hero after he paired a haul of six wickets with a handy score of 33 in the second innings of a low-scoring match. It would be another 14 years before an away team again won a Sheffield Shield Final.8. Western Australia v Tasmania, Sheffield Shield Final 1997-98, Perth:Western Australia had only three first innings wickets in hand, and a lead of 112 over Tasmania, when Brendon Julian walked to the crease on the third morning of the Sheffield Shield Final of 1997-98. Just over two hours’ later, the game had effectively been whisked from Tasmania’s grasp; Julian cracked 119 runs off his own bat alone between lunch and tea in the midst of a brutal partnership of 136 with captain Tom Moody that ultimately helped swell the Warriors’ lead to an imposing 286 on the first innings. Jamie Cox had carried his bat in a brilliant performance in the first innings, and Michael Di Venuto cracked a sumptuous 189 in the second, but a fighting Tasmania could not avert a seven wicket defeat.9. Queensland v Western Australia, Sheffield Shield Final 1998-99, Brisbane::Not content with one effort at dismantling the hopes of a finals opponent, Brendon Julian was back to do it a second time when he joined with Simon Katich and Damien Martyn to topple Queensland in Brisbane in 1998-99. Wickets continued to fall quickly throughout the match on a generally good pitch but Julian’s all-conquering 84 – made from only 71 balls and including eight fours and four sixes – helped to give Western Australia an invaluable 160-run first innings lead. Martyn reaffirmed the edge, complementing four first innings wickets and a patient 85 with the vital scalp of Matthew Hayden from the very last delivery of the third day’s play. Katich and Queensland’s Andrew Symonds had earlier pressed their respective cases for Australian selection by trading first innings centuries.10. Victoria v New South Wales, Sheffield Shield Final 1990-91, Melbourne:A game marked by poor weather and poor batting was turned on its head when Jamie Siddons and Wayne Phillips joined in the magnificent, match-winning partnership that clinched Victoria’s 1990-91 Sheffield Shield Final triumph over New South Wales. All of the first day of the match was surrendered to persistent Melbourne rain but it ultimately failed to stop the Victorians’ charge toward what remains their state’s last first-class title and their only one since 1979-80. The hosts made a good start to the match, quickly dismissing the Blues for 223 once the rains cleared but they promptly handed back the advantage when Wayne Holdsworth and Phil Alley combined to wreck the top and middle order and send the Vics crashing to an even more sickly 119. The Victorians looked in hopeless trouble when their opponents registered a half-century stand to mark the opening of their second innings but hit back through persistent line and length bowling from Tony Dodemaide and captain Simon O’Donnell. The Blues again seemed to be in the box seat when Victoria slumped to 2/27 as it chased a score of 239 to win but the assessment rather ignored the skill, defiance and experience of Siddons and Phillips. Over close to five hours and under the most intense of pressures, they added an unbroken 212 runs together to decisively seal the issue.

Sri Lankan spinners rout New Zealand after Jayasuriya and Jayawardene hit centuries

Sri Lanka scored a sensational victory over New Zealand by wrapping up victory by 106 runs in Sharjah in the second encounter in the ARY Gold Cup

Rafi Nasim10-Apr-2001Sri Lanka scored a sensational victory over New Zealand by wrapping up victory by 106 runs in Sharjah in the second encounter in the ARY Gold Cup.Set a target of 270 the CLEAR Black Caps could only manage 163 as the Sri Lankan spinners proved beyond the comprehension of an otherwise well balanced New Zealand side. This was a match of fluctuating fortunes in which Sri Lanka picked up from a disastrous start, having won the toss and elected to bat on a flat pitch. Daryl Tuffey struck twice in the first over of the day: Atapattu lbw with no score on the board as, for the second time in the tournament, Sri Lanka lost their first wicket to the second ball of the day. Moments later Kumara Sangakkara offered an outside edge to wicket keeper Chris Nevin, again off Tuffey.Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya and his partner Mahela Jayawardene then succeeded in stemming the rot, adding 58 runs in the first 15 overs, gradually at first before Jayawardene completed a splendid 50 in 65 balls with seven fours. Jayasuriya, however, remained steady with 22 runs in 60 balls. The 100 came up in the 24th over as the two batsmen took total command, while in 33rd over Jayawardene hoisted his chanceless century with the help of 11 fours and Jayasuriya completed a steady but highly invaluable half-century.The complexion of the game changed when in an effort to raise the run rate, the batsmen took a few chances. As a result Sri Lanka lost two quick wickets. Caught by Vincent off Tuffey, Jayawardene departed after playing a magnificent innings of 116, his fifth century in one-day cricket and second at Sharjah. Russel Arnold, who had only just come in to bat, followed hard on his heels. Sri Lanka were 188 for 4.Jayasuriya was now on the rampage. He smashed Chris Harris for 4 consecutive sixes, plundering a record 30 runs from a single over and in the process completed his century. Continuing with his hitting spree, Jayasuriya sacrificed his wicket after playing a glorious innings of 107.In the rush to collect quick runs wickets fell quickly; finally bringing Sri Lanka’s innings to a close at 269 for 9. Daryl Tuffey and Andre Adams bowled well to claim 3 wickets each. A target of 270 runs was a wonderful performance after a dismal start.New Zealand started off in an aggressive mood with opener Chris Nevin getting off the mark with a four. With Sinclair he collected 21 runs in the first 3 overs, and brought up the 50 in the 10th over with a superb display of running between the wickets. In 15 overs, New Zealand was 82 for no loss with Nevin (48) and Sinclair (33) looking unperturbed. However, Nevin was then trapped lbw by Muralitharan by a delivery that came back from well outside the off stump. He had scored 48 off 50 balls.Andre Adams came and went quickly, playing aggressively, he was caught by Indika de Saram off Muralitharan. The Black Caps lost their initial momentum, with the 100 coming up in 22 overs. They lost their third wicket immediately after when Craig McMillan was ousted by Russel Arnold for 11. New Zealand was 110 for 3 with Sinclair holding the fort with a gallant 43.Just as Sinclair completed his 50 in 71 balls, his partner Lou Vincent was bowled by Jayasuriya bringing New Zealand to 116 for 4 and putting them under tremendous pressure. The Sri Lankan spinners were wreaking havoc with the ball and Jacob Oram soon followed. The decisive blow was struck in the very next over when Sinclair, who had held the innings together, was declared lbw off Arnold for an excellent 60. The procession continued with Chris Harris the last to go at 163.Sri Lanka achieved the triumph by 106 runs. Muralitharan the master craftsman clinched three wickets while his disciples; Dharmasena, Jayasuriya and Arnold took two wickets each. It was surprising to see the CLEAR Black Caps proving so fragile against spin bowling.

Aston Villa transfer update on Emi Buendia

Aston Villa have been handed a major update on their pursuit of Norwich City star Emi Buendia amid rival interest from Arsenal.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that the Argentine playmaker is someone who Dean Smith is keen on bringing to Villa Park this summer, although the Midlanders are set to face significant competition for his signature from the Gunners.

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece revealed via Twitter: “I’ve just been told Villa & Arsenal both lodged bids yesterday. Emi Buendia currently with Emi Martinez ahead of Argentina’s #WCQ with Chile at 1am UK time. Contact has informed me that Buendia knows of #AVFC and Arsenal interest.”

Fans should be buzzing

Make no mistake about it, news that Villa have made their move for Buendia should have fans absolutely buzzing.

With the Premier League season only finishing a couple of weeks ago, to hear that the Midlands club are already stepping up their transfer plans so early bodes well for the kind of organisation and preparation with which Smith’s side are working at the moment.

With Emi Martinez currently on international duty with Buendia, the Villa and former Arsenal goalkeeper could actually swing things in his new club’s favour and give his international teammate the lowdown about why he should join Villa instead.

Buendia’s arrival would likely help ease the creative burden on Jack Grealish – he managed 17 assists in the Championship last season – and given that Villa have set their sights on him early doors, it suggests that they are intent on signing a new playmaker.

That should help no end next year in the Premier League, and given how Villa fans have already shown their excitement at Buendia’s potential arrival, this latest update from Preece should have them buzzing.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith could sign Villa’s new Dion Dublin in this star…

Expert hails West Brom target Awoniyi

Daniel Pinder, the editor-in-chief of Get German Football News, has told Football FanCast that he has been impressed with on-loan Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Nigerian striker joined the Reds six years ago but is yet to make his first-team debut for Liverpool and has spent the previous seven seasons out on loan.

The most recent of those loan spells was in Germany with Union Berlin, where he scored five goals and laid on three assists in just 21 Bundesliga appearances.

A muscle problem saw Awoniyi restricted to just two substitute outings in the final three months of Union Berlin’s season, but the 23-year-old has emerged as a target for West Brom, who’ve recently got rid of both Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu and are looking to bolster their strike department.

Awoniyi has gained valuable experienece in Belgium and Holland over recent seasons but is yet to make a competitive appearance in English football, but is expected to be allowed to leave Liverpool, even with more than two years running on his Anfield contract.

Pinder told Football FanCast:

“He was on loan at Mainz last season, went back to Liverpool and how he is Union Berlin. He’s a player that has really impressed me.

“Five goals and three assists, and that run of five goals came across seven games, but then he picked up an injury and hasn’t been the same since.

“But he’s a player that puts himself around the box – he’s tall, strong, wins those aerial battles and holds onto the ball well and brings in his teammates.”
