Pundit says Adam Armstrong will be a man in demand

Former Nottingham Forest striker Nigel Jemson has exclusively told Football FanCast that Adam Armstrong will be a man in demand this summer.

Armstrong has little Premier League experience from his early days with Newcastle but is attracting attention from several topflight sides following his goalscoring exploits for Blackburn Rovers in recent years.

Only Ivan Toney (33) outscored the Rovers frontman last term, with Armstrong’s 28 Championship strikes taking him past the 50-goal mark in his three years since signing permanently at Ewood Park.

In this week alone, he’s been linked with Southampton as a potential Danny Ings replacement after his shock move to Aston Villa was confirmed, whilst Crystal Palace are also thought to be in the race for the 24-year-old’s signature.

Wherever Armstrong ends up, playing Premier League football next season appears to be a certainty for a player that Jemson believes has done enough to warrant a topflight move.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Anyone that bangs the goals in like he has in the Championship deserves a crack in the Premier League.

“Is Crystal Palace a better move than Southampton? I don’t know, but he’s a young lad that will score goals, so he’ll be in demand.”

Bielsa explains Phillips’ absence v MUFC

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has explained his reasoning for not playing Kalvin Phillips in their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Leeds thumped at Old Trafford

The Whites were looking to make the perfect start to their Premier League season, but it ended up being a nightmare afternoon at Old Trafford.

Leeds may have equalised through a Luke Ayling stunner early in the second half, but they swiftly found themselves 5-1 down after capitulating against their rivals.

Phillips was a noticeable absentee from the starting line-up, with Robin Koch struggling in midfield, and the England international was clearly missed.

The Latest: Bielsa explains why Phillips didn’t play

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic after the game, journalist Phil Hay claimed that Bielsa “said Phillips’ lack of preparation time was why he didn’t feature” against Manchester United, having returned to pre-season later than some of his teammates due to his involvement in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final.

It remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old will start Leeds’ next game at home to Everton on Saturday.

The Verdict: Phillips’ influence highlighted by his absence

If ever anyone doubted Phillips’ influence on this Whites team, you only needed to look at the manner in which their midfield fell apart against Manchester United.

Some of the marking of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes left a lot to be desired and Leeds lacked their usual tenacity and discipline which exists when Phillips is playing. The Whites won 23 tackles yesterday – just over two per player – whereas the 25-year-old won 2.6 per game by himself last season.

The hope is that he comes back in for the Everton game, or else Bielsa could be risking back-to-back bad results to start the season.

Wolves in talks for Rafael Leao deal

Wolverhampton Wanderers have entered into talks regarding a deal to bring Rafael Leao to Molineux this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report from Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), with it being claimed that Bruno Lage’s side have started discussing a deal for the AC Milan centre-forward with Jorge Mendes, the 22-year-old’s agent.

The report goes on to state that the Serie A side could be tempted into the sale of the Portugal U21 international this summer, while it is also believed that Wolves could lodge a concrete bid for the youngster over the weekend.

Finally, it is claimed that the Premier League side’s interest in a move for Leao appears to be becoming more serious, with the report mentioning that, due to the West Midlands club’s relationship with Mendes, Lage and his side look to have an advantage on the competition for the youngster’s signature.

Imagine him & Neto

Considering the raw amount of potential Leao appears to possess, it is easy to see why Lage appears so keen to get a deal over the line for the centre-forward – who can also play on the wing – ahead of next season.

Indeed, over his 30 Serie A appearances for AC Milan last season – 22 of which came as starts – the £22.5m-rated man scored six goals, registered six assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.4 shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

These returns saw the man Tiago Fernandes dubbed a “champion” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.95, ranking him as Stefano Pioli’s joint 10th-best performer in the top flight of Italian football.

Aside from his impressive displays, the 23-year-old’s versatility would also be a major boost for Lage, with the potential of a front three consisting of the proven Premier League goalscorer Raul Jimenez, the equally exciting Pedro Neto and Leao being something of a tantalising prospect for both the Portuguese coach and fans of the club alike.

As such, it would be difficult to argue that the signing of the £35k-per-week forward would be anything other than a huge coup for Wolves ahead of next season, with Lage undoubtedly hoping to improve on the club’s rather disappointing 13th place finish in the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo last time out in their upcoming campaign.

Chosen 20 lead New Zealand into new era

The preferred 20 players who have been offered contracts by New Zealand Cricket have been named today with no significant surprises. The contracting process is an innovation that has grown out of the players’ association seeking a change in the administration of player salaries.Selection of the players concerned is made by New Zealand Cricket’s selection panel of Sir Richard Hadlee, Denis Aberhart, Ross Dykes and Brian McKechnie.NZC chief executive Martin Snedden said the Australian model had been applied to the New Zealand process, and the decision of who should receive the contracts was based on performances in the 12 months preceding June 1, an assessment of a player’s likely value to NZC or to that player’s Major Association in the following 12 months. It is intended to adopt the points system which has been used in Australian cricket for the last five years. The following is a brief explanation of that points system, as it will apply in NZ.Snedden commented: “The NZC selectors will rank the top 25 cricketers in NZ for the purposes of one-day cricket.”The top-ranked player will receive 25 points, the second ranked player will receive 24 points, and so on down to the 25th ranked player who will receive 1 point.”The NZC selectors, again using the criteria specified above, will then rank the top 25 players for Test cricket purposes.”Again, to begin with, the top ranked Test player will receive 25 points, the second ranked player will receive 24 points, and so on down to the 25th ranked Test player who will receive 1 point.”As it done in Australia, the Test-ranked players will then receive extra weighting. The points received by the Test-ranked players will be multiplied by 1.25.”Once the above exercises have been completed, the selectors will simply merge the two lists together and the top 20 players will be ranked on the basis of their individual combined points score and those will be the 20 players offered contracts by NZC.”The same process will be followed at domestic level (to a limit of 18 players) with the result that the top 11 ranked players will be offered contracts by their respective MA.”The rankings will not be divulged at the request of the players. This is despite the fact the Australian Cricket Board announced the fast-medium bowler Glenn McGrath, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting were their top-ranked players. One of the surprises in the New Zealand list is the awarding of a contract to one-day specialist Paul Hitchcock. He clearly has the weight of expectation on his shoulders having played only one first-class game in his career, and making his international debut on the tour of the West Indies. The players named are:Andre Adams:Tests: 1. 18 runs @ 9.00. But with 216 games for the country there is no substitute for experience and his sweeping of the last 15 overs in ODIs is among the best in the game. At his best, McMillan is a punchy batsman who knows no fear. He has a key role to play in both forms of the game.Chris Martin:Tests: 11. 34 wkts @ 34.58. Needs a big Indian series for his own confidence if nothing else.Jacob Oram:ODIs: 25. 336 runs @ 15.27 (SR 81.35). 18 wkts @ 39.50 (Econ 5.04).Lost some valuable time that would have helped his World Cup preparation due to injury last summer, but with his all-round skills, hard hitting and accurate bowling, Oram would be a handy player in any captain’s repertoire.Mark Richardson:Tests: 20. 1507 runs @ 47.09. ODIs: 4. 42 runs @ 10.50. HS 26 (SR 43.29).Now that he can afford to specialise in his Test batting, there may be even greater things ahead for the already impressive Richardson. With only two home Tests this summer, the Auckland record books in four-day matches could be in for a hammering.Mathew Sinclair:Tests: 18. 1079 runs @ 43.16. HS 214.
ODIs: 25. 660 runs @ 27.50. HS 118* (SR 60.82).Sinclair could do with a really impressive haul of runs this summer. No longer a player who can be regarded as a one-day specialist he offers yet another alternative to the selectors when they ponder their Test match variations.Daryl Tuffey:Tests: 10. 32 wkts @ 32.25. BB 6-54.
ODIs: 37. 40 wkts @ 31.67. BB 4-24 (Econ 4.88).Last summer’s comeback victory over England was an important statement by Tuffey about his desire to play at the top international level. His ability to put strength into his bowling makes him an enduring type of player of who there are too few in New Zealand at the moment. A solid workhorse with oodles of potential.Daniel Vettori:Tests: 42. 851 runs @ 16.36. HS 90. 139 wkts @ 33.86. BB 7-87.
ODIs: 93. 467 runs @ 10.61. HS 30 (SR 74.72). 79 wkts @ 39.74. BB 4-24 (Econ 4.47).All the signs point to Vettori being back to his best with an invigorating quality that marks him as a player to be respected by the world’s best batsmen. His presence will increase New Zealand’s competitiveness significantly. And that’s not to forget his batting.Lou Vincent:Tests: 9. 513 runs at 32.06. HS 104.
ODIs: 42. 876 runs @ 23.67. HS 60* (SR 60.53).Vincent grasped all the strands of opportunity he could last season. Still appeals most as a batsman/fielder on the one-day scene, although his average needs some serious attention. And in Test match play his goal must be for much greater consistency.

Ashley Preece drops Villa update on Louie Barry

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered an exciting Aston Villa update on Louie Barry.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old came into the spotlight last season after scoring in the FA Cup defeat against Liverpool, a game which saw Villa’s youngsters having to step into the shoes of the senior side and take on Jurgen Klopp’s men.

That appearance was his sole outing for Dean Smith’s first-team, and now, Preece has confirmed that as well as seeing his contract extended, the Midlands club are expected to include him in plans for pre-season.

He said: “Aston Villa have extended Louie Barry’s contract by another year until 2024 with a cluster of fellow FA Youth Cup winners penning new deals.

“Villa paid £950,000 to bring Barry in from Barcelona more than 18 months ago and, this summer, the teenage striker is expected to feature in Dean Smith’s first-team plans over pre-season.”

Fans will be buzzing

Given the excitement with which Villa fans celebrated Barry’s goal against the Reds, and the big future that they have tipped him for, supporters will no doubt be buzzing with Preece’s latest update on the teenager.

With only Wesley and Keinan Davis providing real back-up for Ollie Watkins – and neither have really convinced with just 12 goals in 110 games for the club – there’s a real chance for Barry to stake his claim in the first-team next season in the Premier League.

Giving him the opportunity to impress with the rest of the senior players in pre-season will give Smith a first-hand opportunity to see what he’s like in a more pressure-filled environment than with the U23s, and have him get used to the speed and intensity with which they play.

So, news that Barry is expected to feature in Smith’s plans over pre-season is surely likely to have Villa fans buzzing as they see one of the club’s brightest young prospects rubbing shoulders with the senior side.

Meanwhile, Villa are set for an exciting boost…

West Ham: Ex drops takeover claim

West Ham did not receive a former takeover bid this week, according to ExWHUemployee…

What’s the word?

Reports had emerged suggesting that a group of investors had made an attempt to purchase the East London outfit in a bid worth over £400m, as per the Daily Mail.

It was claimed that the prospective owners wanted to hand Irons boss David Moyes a significant transfer budget, whilst also transforming the London Stadium and the surrounding areas, though it’s said that majority shareholder David Sullivan rejected the offer.

However, in a new update, the anonymous but very reliable ExWHUemployee played down such claims. He tweeted:

“The talk from their end was that they would make a serious offer but at this point they haven’t. There has been no formal bid. So they will have to prove their credibility soon. They have had 5 months to do so and haven’t yet but I guess time will tell.”

GSB remain

The Hammers faithful have had a very interesting relationship with the club’s owners over the years but you would imagine that the majority would love to see new ownership.

Back in February 2020, supporters staged a protest march against Sullivan, David Gold and Karen Brady before a game against Southampton, whilst some fans had banners a week earlier, saying “Run like a circus – Owned by clowns” and “GSB out – Sold a dream, delivered a nightmare.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more-2” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

And just months later, some protested following the sale of promising academy star Grady Diangana to West Brom. “Now more than ever, the voices of our members and all West Ham fans must be heard,” claimed Stephen Cross at leading supporter organisation Hammers United.

That made it clear that it wasn’t just about their dismal campaign, in which they avoided relegation with one game to spare.

It’s evident that not much has changed over a year on, as seen by their reaction to one of Ex’s recent transfer updates, where some of the London Stadium fanbase have been left frustrated by a lack of activity off the pitch – as relayed by the Transfer Tavern.

Therefore, you could argue that a lot of supporters in East London will be pretty upset and angry by this latest claim as it means GSB will remain in charge for the time being.

That is very unlikely to change with the new season less than a month away, so Gold and Sullivan are likely to be around for a while yet.

AND in other news, Moyes could land Bowen 2.0 in West Ham swoop for “magic” 17-goal gem, GSB must act now…

So close for West Indies

One of the most over-used sayings in sports it ain’t over till the fat lady sings echoed around the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday evening

Haydn Gill13-Jun-2002One of the most over-used sayings in sports it ain’t over till the fat lady sings echoed around the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday evening. And it was simply because West Indies, seemingly heading for certain defeat, reinvigorated a hopelessly desperate position to a stage where it nearly reached Tante Merle proportions. The tension never quite escalated to boiling point, but there was mounting excitement around the ground when the West Indies started the final three overs needing 33 runs with Ridley Jacobs in a rampaging mood.It was a position that few would have envisaged when Jacobs was joined by No. 9 Corey Collymore when the target was still 62 away with only 45 balls available.Collymore stayed with Jacobs while 43 were added in 5.5 overs, to the delight of the 7 000 mid-week crowd. But the run-outs of Collymore and Cameron Cuffy in successive balls at the start of the penultimate over made the task even more difficult.A hobbling Mervyn Dillon came out as last man with 19 still required from nine balls. It proved a tall order, and New Zealand won by nine runs to keep alive their hopes of not losing the series, which ends on Sunday in St Vincent. West Indies lead the series 2-1.The infamous, mind-boggling Duckworth/Lewis calculations and a stunning all-round performance by one of international cricket’s less-heralded players had earlier combined to condemn the West Indies to what might have been a defeat by a big margin. The expected wet-season rain interrupted the contest just after 12:30 p.m. with New Zealand making encouraging progress on 212 for five in 44.2 overs and delayed the proceedings until 3 p.m.Under the method, West Indies asking rate was drastically inflated because of the stoppage. Only 33 overs were possible in the time remaining, but West Indies’ target was the identical score posted by New Zealand. In short, the Black Caps scored at a rate of 4.78, while West Indies were asked to score at 6.42. Such are the advantages or disadvantages of a system that was devised by two highly-qualified mathematicians. There is nothing you can do about it. It [the Duckworth/Lewis rule] definitely needs needs fine-tuning, West Indies captain Carl Hooper said.I think it has cost us two games this summer. We are probably not the first team to be hard done by it, but it needs to looked at.Once the team batting first bats well and puts up a decent score, and the minute rain intervenes, the team batting second is always going to up against it.Opener Chris Gayle hammered a run-a-ball 60 and Jacobs made the identical score of 15 balls fewer, but the other West Indies batsmen were unable to cope with Scott Styris’ inviting medium-pace, with many of the them outfoxed by his variations in pace. The 26-year-old all-rounder finished with six for 25 the best figures by a New Zealander against the West Indies in One-Day Internationals after his explosive unbeaten 63 revived his team’s innings after an uncertain start. It was only the ninth time in the history of limited-overs internationals that a player performed the double of 50 and five wickets in the same match.Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul launched the West Indies reply with a first-wicket stand of 49 in 6.3 overs, but once Styris came on and started with a maiden-wicket, the match took a sudden twist.Brian Lara arrived at No. 3 for the first time in the international season but lasted only five balls before snicking a defensive prod to the keeper.Hooper lifted the tempo with 24 off 25 balls before pushing a catch to long-off off Styris. The Hindses Wavell and Ryan would later provide carbon-copies of their captain’s dismissal. In between, Ramnaresh Sarwan, sent two notches down from his usual No. 3 because of the circumstances, was bowled attempting to pull his fourth ball, while Gayle, becalmed by the fast flow of wickets, slashed a drive to point. At that point, victory was 98 runs away and defeat a distinct possibility until Jacobs altered things.New Zealand’s total, built on a splendid recovery between their two most dangerous batsmen in the shorter form of the game, was stopped by the rain with 5.4 overs left.Nathan Astle, woefully short of runs in the first three matches, finally put together a significant contribution, an unbeaten 91 in which he was at times forced to abandon his natural attacking instincts because of the clatter of wickets that fell around him.It was only after big-hitting Styris helped him consolidate that he was able to move into over-drive.They were especially severe on the Barbadian pair of Collymore and Ryan Hinds and their partnership was worth 122 off 137 balls and growing when it was prematurely ended by the elements.Styris initiated the aggression by lifting Hinds over long-on for the first of his two sixes. The other, off the same bowler, went in the same direction and brought up his second half-century in the series, off 63 balls.Once he became a reliable partner, Astle joined in sharing in the lashes by charging Collymore and dispatching him over long-on and a whisker away from a couple of new, impressive Suzuki vehicles on display.Collymore’s figures, which read six overs for 15 runs at one stage, were suddenly ruined when he was belted for 26 from his next two overs.Astle seemed headed for his 13th century in ODIs and the Black Caps appeared to be on course for at least 250 when the rain came.It was a total they would have welcomed after another uncertain beginning. They found themselves in the world of trouble in the first 20 overs for the fourth successive match, notwithstanding that Stephen Fleming had won the toss in three of them. The captain himself started the rot, edging Mervyn Dillon’s third ball to second slip after pushing the first of the day behind point for four.As was the case in the preceding matches, the second, third and fourth wickets went down in less time than it would take to consume a hot roti. The action at the end was just as hot.

CPFC: Michael Olise agrees personal terms

Crystal Palace are closing in on signing Reading’s Michael Olise after agreeing on personal terms with the midfielder, Football League World have reported.

The Lowdown: Christie and Rogers links

The Eagles have been strongly linked with two players after knowing that Patrick Vieira would be the man in the Selhurst Park dugout next season.

The first was Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie, with the Scot’s contract in Glasgow having just six months left to run. The other was for Manchester City youngster Morgan Rogers, with the 18-year-old seemingly fitting Palace’s profile for transfer additions this summer.

However, it appears as if Olise, who was described as ‘fearless’ by Royals teammate Sam Baldock, could well be Vieira’s first signing as Palace manager.

The Latest: Olise agrees personal terms

Reports emerged earlier in the week claiming that Palace have agreed on a deal to sign the Frenchman.

Football League World, who were informed by a source, shared a story on Wednesday claiming that personal terms have been reached. According to their report, a deal for Olise now looks set to go through, barring any late complications.

The Verdict: A smart addition

Olise has been on Palace’s radar for some time and will provide plenty of versatility for Vieira. He has already lined out in seven different positions in his 73 career appearances, with his main role coming as an attacking midfielder.

The teenager may well end up taking Eberechi Eze’s place at the beginning of the campaign following the latter’s serious injury, and Olise could well turn out to be a bargain buy in the long run for Palace.
