Grant Flower signs contract extension

Essex allrounder Grant Flower has extended his contract with the county for another year, taking him up to the end of the 2009 season

Cricinfo staff25-Sep-2008Essex allrounder Grant Flower has extended his contract with the county for another year, taking him up to the end of the 2009 season.”Halfway through the season I thought that would probably be it, but I’m very happy to be staying at Essex,” Flower said. “Sussex did speak to me but I always thought that if Essex offered me something I would stay.”They are a good bunch of guys at Essex and I’ve been here for four years, so at this stage in my career I wouldn’t want to move on, ideally.”There is a good spirit and winning culture at Essex and I don’t see why we can’t get better. With the young guys coming through, and new signings, in theory we should be stronger with more competition for places.”

Newcastle offered Mariano Diaz

An update has emerged on Real Madrid attacker Mariano Diaz and it involves Newcastle United.

What’s the talk?

According to Jeunes Footeux, via TeamTalk, Real Madrid have offered Newcastle the chance to sign Mariano Diaz this summer.

The Magpies are said to be weighing up a swoop for the attacker, who has fallen out of favour at the Spanish club and as such, is now seeking a new club.

Imagine him and Wilson

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce must seal a deal for the forward this summer and take up the opportunity Real are giving them.

Goals were hard to come by in the Premier League last season and bringing in extra firepower could help to alleviate that particular issue.

Out of the players currently in the squad, Callum Wilson is the only one who managed more than four goals in the league. The ex-Bournemouth star was terrific as he plundered 12, with Joelinton’s four the next-highest after loanee Joe Willock’s eight, but the Arsenal man remains at The Emirates, for now at least.

Bruce lined up with a 4-4-2 on occasions last term with Joelinton and Wilson as a front two. However, four goals in 31 appearances (23 starts) is not an impressive return from the former.

This is why Mariano could come in and take his place in the side. Lyon assistant boss Gerald Baticle once labelled him as a real goalscorer, claiming that his first intention is always to shoot.

He told EuroSport, via GOAL:

“He’s a real goalscorer.”

“When others might want to make a pass, his first idea is to find an angle to shoot towards goal. All his play is in the centre towards goal.

“Of course, with his first touch, he has to raise his head more often to take in more information and make better choices. But in individual raids, he’s good because he’s capable of piercing the lines.”

His game time has been extremely limited at Real Madrid in recent seasons, but his goal-to-start ratio is excellent with six goals in nine starts across La Liga and the Champions League.

In his last season of playing regular football, he scored 18 goals in 30 Ligue 1 starts for Lyon, averaging a terrific WhoScored rating of 7.15.

This suggests that he could have the potential to arrive at St. James’ Park and score goals in the Premier League, as he has shown he can do it in Ligue 1 – another top league in Europe. It is difficult to say he is proven in La Liga and the Champions League, as the evidence is sparse, but the signs are there that he could have scored more goals if he had been given more chances from the start.

Therefore, bringing in Diaz could complete Newcastle’s attack and hand Wilson a competent partner at the top end of the pitch.

The Real Madrid man will just need to show that he can rediscover his Lyon form because his statistics for the French side dwarf anything Joelinton has been able to do in England.

Aston Villa dealt Ward-Prowse transfer blow

Adam Blackmore has dropped a big update on the future of reported Aston Villa transfer target James Ward-Prowse…

What’s the talk?

The Radio Solent journalist has stated that the Southampton midfielder will not be leaving the south coast before the end of the transfer window.

He tweeted: “After the last 24 hours with Ings, Grealish, etc., and all the crazy gossip that goes along with it, it’s probably worth reiterating the point I’ve made previously, that Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse is going nowhere in this window.”

Aston Villa are interested in signing the England international this summer and have reportedly already had an offer of £25m rejected by the Saints.

Fans will be fuming

Aston Villa fans must be fuming with this update as it appears to rule out what would be a terrific signing for the club. Ward-Prowse is a proven Premier League performer and would be a superb addition to Dean Smith’s side, which is why supporters will surely be upset that he is now set to stay with Southampton.

The Englishman played every single minute of the Saints’ league campaign last term, averaging an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.07. He provided eight goals and seven assists from midfield, whilst also making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game.

Of all the Villa players to feature in 10 or more Premier League matches last season, only Ollie Watkins (7.18) and Jack Grealish (7.56) managed higher average ratings than Ward-Prowse. This shows that the 26-year-old could come in at Villa Park and be one of the better performers at the club, as he has already shown that he can perform to a high standard in the top flight.

At the end of last season, Saints head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl called him “outstanding”. The Austrian told the Daily Echo: “It’s not surprising for me, a player who played every minute this season is unbelievable.

“His physicality and his performances are outstanding. That’s our captain on the pitch and he is on the way that he is a very important player for this club for the long-term, I think.”

This highlights Ward-Prowse’s quality at Premier League level and why he would surely improve Villa’s side. Therefore, supporters will be gutted over this update from Blackmore, with the midfielder now looking likely to be playing for Southampton rather than Villa in the 2021/22 campaign. It is now down to Johan Lange and Smith to identify alternative targets before the end of the transfer window.

Leeds: Whites eyeing move for Jens Cajuste

Leeds United are reportedly interested in a deal to sign FC Midtjylland defensive midfielder Jens Cajuste, according to Swedish media outlet Expressen.

The lowdown: ‘The future of Swedish football’

Cajuste has been with Danish side FC Midtjylland since 2018, and has made 69 appearances in total for them, having previously been on the books with Örgryte IS earlier in his career.

The midfielder is contracted with them until the summer of 2023, although it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll remain with FC Midtjylland for much longer, with the 21-year-old not short of offers.

Cajuste has also been capped five times for the Swedish national side, and he made one substitute appearance against Spain in the European Championships this year.

Football Talent Scout have previously labelled Cajuste as the future of Swedish football, before predicting that he’d receive offers from bigger clubs in the future.

“Excellent performance in an extremely important game for Midtjylland. The future of Swedish football. Danish Superliga has too many exciting talents.

“Cajuste will soon be ready to take the next step and attack one of the top 5 leagues. He will surely receive many offers in the summer.”

The latest: Leeds set to rival Premier League clubs for Cajuste

Leeds United are said to have registered their interest in signing Cajuste, according to Expressen, but they aren’t the only English team interested in a deal for the 21-year-old.

That same report claims that Newcastle United, Brentford, Wolves and Crystal Palace are also keen on signing Cajuste this summer, as they look to scoop up a talented long-term acquisition.

The verdict: Leeds have a real battle on their hands

They won’t have it all their way in the race to land Cajuste’s signature this summer.

Leeds could be a tempting proposition for the Swedish midfielder, especially whilst they’re under the management of Marcelo Bielsa.

But he’ll need to think carefully about his game time in the future, as somewhere like Brentford, Newcastle, Wolves or Crystal Palace might actually be able to offer him more minutes on a consistent basis given Leeds’ impressive rise in the last couple of seasons.

The future looks bright for Cajuste though and he seems destined to move on to pastures new at some point – perhaps he could be the perfect deputy and understudy to Kalvin Phillips?

Crystal Palace: Fans react to recent Lucien Favre update

Crystal Palace will allegedly meet with Lucien Favre in France to attempt to persuade the Swiss head-coach to take the reigns at Selhurst Park, according to COPA 90 journalist Harvey Wheddon on Twitter.

The Eagles have been embroiled in a mire of uncertainty heading into 2021/22, as they are still without a manager following the departure of Roy Hodgson from Selhurst Park last month [Independent].

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Favre looked certain to enter the vacant managerial position in South-East London, however the deal looked to have collapsed in spectacular fashion following a breakdown in discussions [Guardian].

Now, in another stunning turn of events, Wheddon has indicated that the Palace hierarchy have once again gone all out to get their favoured option on Twitter, stating:

“My understanding is, Lucien Favre declined us before because of our small transfer budget. That’s why the Americans have flown to France with Parish to meet him.Parish really wants Favre and is doing everything in his power to get him.Big props to Steve. #CPFC #Favre”

There is no doubt that yet another turn in this deal would come as a shock to onlookers of all persuasions given how the initial move faltered, and it’s no wonder loads of Crystal Palace diehards took to Twitter to voice their opinions on recent developments.

Crystal Palace fans react:

Replying to the post on Twitter, here is how some Eagles fans summed up their feelings on the latest twist in the Favre saga:

England go one-nil up in the series after conclusive victory at Lord's

England had to work hard – rather harder than might have been expected – to secure their victory, but at half past two on a hot and sultry afternoon, Craig White bowled a ball to Ashish Nehra who pushed forward to give a catch to Graham Thorpe at second slip and England had won by 170 runs. Ajit Agarkar, who had gone into the match with a Test average of 7.81, was left not out on 109 as he and Nehra had forced England to sweat through a record last wicket partnership of 63 before they were separated and celebrations could begin.Unlike their more illustrious colleagues, VVS Laxman and Agarkar provided stubborn resistance to England’s bowlers on the final morning. With England moving in for the kill, the batsmen refused to be flustered as they showed great resolve in face of the inevitable. Both passed fifty and runs flowed as they exploited the vast areas left vacant so that close catchers could be deployed all round the bat.Sixty runs came in the first hour as Nasser Hussain juggled his resources until he found the right answer. For the fourth time in the innings, a bowling change resulted in a wicket in the new bowler’s first over. The pair had added 126 for the seventh wicket and had defied the attack in all its guises for 209 balls when Simon Jones induced Laxman to drive on the off side. The ball flew to point where Michael Vaughan held the catch.Still runs accumulated; still the slips, gullies and short legs were in attendance. The new batsman, Anil Kumble might not have appeared as comfortable as Laxman had, but he survived in company with the admirable Agarkar until giving Matthew Hoggard a simple return catch. Zaheer Khan’s stay was a short one before he edged Craig White to Alec Stewart, but Agarkar and Ashish Nehra at least ensured that the catering staff were required at lunch. They probably had the dishes washed and dried when Nehra brought up the fifty partnership with a disdainfully hooked six off Andrew Flintoff. Then Agarkar reached his hundred by pushing Jones through the covers for two when on 99. His first run was a mixture of single and celebration, while he probably floated back for the second without his feet touching the ground.Of course, it could not last and after the batsmen had enjoyed their fun in delaying England’s inevitable win, White found the ball that brought the entertainment to an end and England head for Trent Bridge leading the series one-nil.

Pundit says Aaron Ramsdale would love to sign for Spurs

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that Aaron Ramsdale would “jump at the chance” to make an instant return to the Premier League and sign for Tottenham.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who replaced Dean Henderson in the England squad for the Euros earlier this month, has been relegated in each of his two seasons at top-flight level with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

But the Blades shot-stopper has already been linked back to the Premier League, with Spurs amongst a host of sides keen on signing the Three Lions keeper.

Ramsdale, who was described as “incredible” by Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool’s win at Bramall Lane in March, was an ever-present for Sheffield United last season but conceded a whopping 63 goals and despite some memorable saves, was unable to prevent the Yorkshire outfit from ending their brief stay.

Should Ramsdale join this summer, he’d be Spurs’ second-choice goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris, but the Frenchman has just 12 months remaining on his deal in north London, which could leave the 23-year-old in with a chance of becoming his successor.

And that’s exactly what Windass told Football FanCast:

“Lloris is coming to an end, depending on how he does for his country.

“Everyone wants to play in the Premier League and if somebody comes calling, you can’t turn it down.

“He’s done very well for Sheffield United, and I think he would jump at the chance.”
