Ashley Preece drops Villa update on Louie Barry

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered an exciting Aston Villa update on Louie Barry.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old came into the spotlight last season after scoring in the FA Cup defeat against Liverpool, a game which saw Villa’s youngsters having to step into the shoes of the senior side and take on Jurgen Klopp’s men.

That appearance was his sole outing for Dean Smith’s first-team, and now, Preece has confirmed that as well as seeing his contract extended, the Midlands club are expected to include him in plans for pre-season.

He said: “Aston Villa have extended Louie Barry’s contract by another year until 2024 with a cluster of fellow FA Youth Cup winners penning new deals.

“Villa paid £950,000 to bring Barry in from Barcelona more than 18 months ago and, this summer, the teenage striker is expected to feature in Dean Smith’s first-team plans over pre-season.”

Fans will be buzzing

Given the excitement with which Villa fans celebrated Barry’s goal against the Reds, and the big future that they have tipped him for, supporters will no doubt be buzzing with Preece’s latest update on the teenager.

With only Wesley and Keinan Davis providing real back-up for Ollie Watkins – and neither have really convinced with just 12 goals in 110 games for the club – there’s a real chance for Barry to stake his claim in the first-team next season in the Premier League.

Giving him the opportunity to impress with the rest of the senior players in pre-season will give Smith a first-hand opportunity to see what he’s like in a more pressure-filled environment than with the U23s, and have him get used to the speed and intensity with which they play.

So, news that Barry is expected to feature in Smith’s plans over pre-season is surely likely to have Villa fans buzzing as they see one of the club’s brightest young prospects rubbing shoulders with the senior side.

Meanwhile, Villa are set for an exciting boost…

West Ham: Ex drops takeover claim

West Ham did not receive a former takeover bid this week, according to ExWHUemployee…

What’s the word?

Reports had emerged suggesting that a group of investors had made an attempt to purchase the East London outfit in a bid worth over £400m, as per the Daily Mail.

It was claimed that the prospective owners wanted to hand Irons boss David Moyes a significant transfer budget, whilst also transforming the London Stadium and the surrounding areas, though it’s said that majority shareholder David Sullivan rejected the offer.

However, in a new update, the anonymous but very reliable ExWHUemployee played down such claims. He tweeted:

“The talk from their end was that they would make a serious offer but at this point they haven’t. There has been no formal bid. So they will have to prove their credibility soon. They have had 5 months to do so and haven’t yet but I guess time will tell.”

GSB remain

The Hammers faithful have had a very interesting relationship with the club’s owners over the years but you would imagine that the majority would love to see new ownership.

Back in February 2020, supporters staged a protest march against Sullivan, David Gold and Karen Brady before a game against Southampton, whilst some fans had banners a week earlier, saying “Run like a circus – Owned by clowns” and “GSB out – Sold a dream, delivered a nightmare.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more-2” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

And just months later, some protested following the sale of promising academy star Grady Diangana to West Brom. “Now more than ever, the voices of our members and all West Ham fans must be heard,” claimed Stephen Cross at leading supporter organisation Hammers United.

That made it clear that it wasn’t just about their dismal campaign, in which they avoided relegation with one game to spare.

It’s evident that not much has changed over a year on, as seen by their reaction to one of Ex’s recent transfer updates, where some of the London Stadium fanbase have been left frustrated by a lack of activity off the pitch – as relayed by the Transfer Tavern.

Therefore, you could argue that a lot of supporters in East London will be pretty upset and angry by this latest claim as it means GSB will remain in charge for the time being.

That is very unlikely to change with the new season less than a month away, so Gold and Sullivan are likely to be around for a while yet.

AND in other news, Moyes could land Bowen 2.0 in West Ham swoop for “magic” 17-goal gem, GSB must act now…

So close for West Indies

One of the most over-used sayings in sports it ain’t over till the fat lady sings echoed around the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday evening

Haydn Gill13-Jun-2002One of the most over-used sayings in sports it ain’t over till the fat lady sings echoed around the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday evening. And it was simply because West Indies, seemingly heading for certain defeat, reinvigorated a hopelessly desperate position to a stage where it nearly reached Tante Merle proportions. The tension never quite escalated to boiling point, but there was mounting excitement around the ground when the West Indies started the final three overs needing 33 runs with Ridley Jacobs in a rampaging mood.It was a position that few would have envisaged when Jacobs was joined by No. 9 Corey Collymore when the target was still 62 away with only 45 balls available.Collymore stayed with Jacobs while 43 were added in 5.5 overs, to the delight of the 7 000 mid-week crowd. But the run-outs of Collymore and Cameron Cuffy in successive balls at the start of the penultimate over made the task even more difficult.A hobbling Mervyn Dillon came out as last man with 19 still required from nine balls. It proved a tall order, and New Zealand won by nine runs to keep alive their hopes of not losing the series, which ends on Sunday in St Vincent. West Indies lead the series 2-1.The infamous, mind-boggling Duckworth/Lewis calculations and a stunning all-round performance by one of international cricket’s less-heralded players had earlier combined to condemn the West Indies to what might have been a defeat by a big margin. The expected wet-season rain interrupted the contest just after 12:30 p.m. with New Zealand making encouraging progress on 212 for five in 44.2 overs and delayed the proceedings until 3 p.m.Under the method, West Indies asking rate was drastically inflated because of the stoppage. Only 33 overs were possible in the time remaining, but West Indies’ target was the identical score posted by New Zealand. In short, the Black Caps scored at a rate of 4.78, while West Indies were asked to score at 6.42. Such are the advantages or disadvantages of a system that was devised by two highly-qualified mathematicians. There is nothing you can do about it. It [the Duckworth/Lewis rule] definitely needs needs fine-tuning, West Indies captain Carl Hooper said.I think it has cost us two games this summer. We are probably not the first team to be hard done by it, but it needs to looked at.Once the team batting first bats well and puts up a decent score, and the minute rain intervenes, the team batting second is always going to up against it.Opener Chris Gayle hammered a run-a-ball 60 and Jacobs made the identical score of 15 balls fewer, but the other West Indies batsmen were unable to cope with Scott Styris’ inviting medium-pace, with many of the them outfoxed by his variations in pace. The 26-year-old all-rounder finished with six for 25 the best figures by a New Zealander against the West Indies in One-Day Internationals after his explosive unbeaten 63 revived his team’s innings after an uncertain start. It was only the ninth time in the history of limited-overs internationals that a player performed the double of 50 and five wickets in the same match.Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul launched the West Indies reply with a first-wicket stand of 49 in 6.3 overs, but once Styris came on and started with a maiden-wicket, the match took a sudden twist.Brian Lara arrived at No. 3 for the first time in the international season but lasted only five balls before snicking a defensive prod to the keeper.Hooper lifted the tempo with 24 off 25 balls before pushing a catch to long-off off Styris. The Hindses Wavell and Ryan would later provide carbon-copies of their captain’s dismissal. In between, Ramnaresh Sarwan, sent two notches down from his usual No. 3 because of the circumstances, was bowled attempting to pull his fourth ball, while Gayle, becalmed by the fast flow of wickets, slashed a drive to point. At that point, victory was 98 runs away and defeat a distinct possibility until Jacobs altered things.New Zealand’s total, built on a splendid recovery between their two most dangerous batsmen in the shorter form of the game, was stopped by the rain with 5.4 overs left.Nathan Astle, woefully short of runs in the first three matches, finally put together a significant contribution, an unbeaten 91 in which he was at times forced to abandon his natural attacking instincts because of the clatter of wickets that fell around him.It was only after big-hitting Styris helped him consolidate that he was able to move into over-drive.They were especially severe on the Barbadian pair of Collymore and Ryan Hinds and their partnership was worth 122 off 137 balls and growing when it was prematurely ended by the elements.Styris initiated the aggression by lifting Hinds over long-on for the first of his two sixes. The other, off the same bowler, went in the same direction and brought up his second half-century in the series, off 63 balls.Once he became a reliable partner, Astle joined in sharing in the lashes by charging Collymore and dispatching him over long-on and a whisker away from a couple of new, impressive Suzuki vehicles on display.Collymore’s figures, which read six overs for 15 runs at one stage, were suddenly ruined when he was belted for 26 from his next two overs.Astle seemed headed for his 13th century in ODIs and the Black Caps appeared to be on course for at least 250 when the rain came.It was a total they would have welcomed after another uncertain beginning. They found themselves in the world of trouble in the first 20 overs for the fourth successive match, notwithstanding that Stephen Fleming had won the toss in three of them. The captain himself started the rot, edging Mervyn Dillon’s third ball to second slip after pushing the first of the day behind point for four.As was the case in the preceding matches, the second, third and fourth wickets went down in less time than it would take to consume a hot roti. The action at the end was just as hot.

CPFC: Michael Olise agrees personal terms

Crystal Palace are closing in on signing Reading’s Michael Olise after agreeing on personal terms with the midfielder, Football League World have reported.

The Lowdown: Christie and Rogers links

The Eagles have been strongly linked with two players after knowing that Patrick Vieira would be the man in the Selhurst Park dugout next season.

The first was Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie, with the Scot’s contract in Glasgow having just six months left to run. The other was for Manchester City youngster Morgan Rogers, with the 18-year-old seemingly fitting Palace’s profile for transfer additions this summer.

However, it appears as if Olise, who was described as ‘fearless’ by Royals teammate Sam Baldock, could well be Vieira’s first signing as Palace manager.

The Latest: Olise agrees personal terms

Reports emerged earlier in the week claiming that Palace have agreed on a deal to sign the Frenchman.

Football League World, who were informed by a source, shared a story on Wednesday claiming that personal terms have been reached. According to their report, a deal for Olise now looks set to go through, barring any late complications.

The Verdict: A smart addition

Olise has been on Palace’s radar for some time and will provide plenty of versatility for Vieira. He has already lined out in seven different positions in his 73 career appearances, with his main role coming as an attacking midfielder.

The teenager may well end up taking Eberechi Eze’s place at the beginning of the campaign following the latter’s serious injury, and Olise could well turn out to be a bargain buy in the long run for Palace.

Freddie Woodman drops Swansea transfer hint

Freddie Woodman has dropped a huge transfer hint regarding his future at Swansea City.

What’s been said?

In an interview published on Swansea City’s official website, the Newcastle United loanee revealed that he had fallen in love with the south Wales club, going on to claim that he is now a Swans fan and would be very much open to a return to the Liberty Stadium either this summer or at some point in the future.

He said: “It’s probably been the best two years of my life playing here. I’ve fallen in love with the place and developed so much. I just wanted to get over the line for the city; I know how much they wanted us in that big league, so I’m absolutely gutted.

“I hope this isn’t the last game I play in a Swansea shirt. The main thing is to sort out my next step; if that’s in a Swansea shirt then brilliant but if it’s not, I have to crack on and that’s football.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive the goalkeeper – whom Ryan Dilks dubbed a “fantastic” player – has been over his two-year loan spell at Swansea,  the fact the 24-year-old has suggested he would be open to a move back to the club this summer is likely to have Swans fans buzzing.

In the club’s 2019/20 campaign, Woodman kept 12 clean sheets over 43 his Championship appearances, in addition to making an average of 2.6 saves per game and stopping three out of the five penalties he faced, earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.89.

This season, the former England under-21 international kept 20 clean sheets over his 45 Championship fixtures, as well as making an average of 2.2 saves per game and stopping one of the three penalties he faced, seeing the £8.1m-rated man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Steve Cooper’s 12th-best performer in the second tier.

As such, securing a permanent deal for the £4,500-per-week shot-stopper this summer would provide the club with a huge boost to their chances of going one step further than they managed this season – winning promotion to the Premier League.

With Woodman appearing to be more than open to the possibility of spending more time at Swansea, perhaps this is a deal we will see Cooper getting over the line in the upcoming transfer window.

In other news: Get it done: Cooper must sanction Swansea swoop for £2.25m-rated dynamo this summer

Border take giant stride in bid to reach final

If Border claim a place in the final of the Supersport Series, then Friday in Bloemfontein might just be the day they gave themselves the chance.By stumps they had moved into a sizeable 162-run lead with eight secondinnings wickets in hand, after bowling their opponents Free State out forjust 225.The Free State total was dominated by the efforts of Andrew Gait, theopener’s 112 his highest score in first-class cricket and just his secondhundred. It could have ended so much earlier though, as the young batsmanappeared to be the recipient of a healthy dose of good fortune when on just24.It was then that he aimed a pull shot at Tyron Henderson and he – andjust about everyone else – turned to see the ball climbing high into thesky. It was only when the ball landed safely that ‘keeper Ian Mitchellindicated that the wicket had been broken. Surely Gait had to go, hitwicket? But doubt there was, and instead of Gait lengthening his stride back tothe pavilion, he took up guard once more with the blessing of the umpires.Quite what Border made of it all was less clear. Certainly in the days oftelevision replays, Gait might not have been so lucky. What would have improved the Border spirits was the clatter of FreeState wickets, eight of them for just 13 runs, as the home side stumbledfrom 109-2 to 122-6 shortly after lunch. Despite the efforts of Gait andRashied Lewis, 225 still represented a serious deficit. That much was rammed home by some fine batting from Craig Sugden as hehelped the Bears into what should be an impregnable position by the close.

Match-fixing probe says corruption still a problem: report

Despite the life bans on prominent cricketers and stringent new constraints, the scourge of match-fixing in international cricket was still on and recent matches involving Pakistan are being investigated, media reported in London on Saturday

19-May-2001Despite the life bans on prominent cricketers and stringent new constraints, the scourge of match-fixing in international cricket was still on and recent matches involving Pakistan are being investigated, media reported in London on Saturday.”Matches played by Pakistan and New Zealand in Sharjah and by Pakistan in New Zealand this year have been under particular scrutiny,” ‘The Times’ newspaper said.It stated that a report by Sir Paul Condon, Chief of ICC’s anti-corruption unit “will say next week that cricket cannot be given a clean bill of health.”The report will suggest that, despite the life bans imposed on former captains Hansie Cronje of South Africa, Md Azharuddin of India and Salim Malik of Pakistan, “attempts to manipulate results for money may not have been wiped out.”Betting syndicates are known to have made large amounts not only out of the results of matches and series, many involving India and Pakistan, but also out of many different aspects of the game,” the daily said. They have been known to bet on such things as who would bat first, who would open the bowling and whether certain batsmen would score more or less than a certain figure.According to the report, Sir Paul who was recently made “people’s peer” has admitted that cricket will never be rid of dishonesty. But he has set himself the target of reducing the problem to an “irreducible minimum” before the next World Cup in South Africa in 2002-03.Sir Paul disclosed in February that “sadly there are still things to come out” and his report next week, to be released on the Internet, will indicate that there is still a long way to go before his objective can be met. No allegations against individuals will be made but the Condon report is expected to be highly critical of the way the ICC handled previous cases of suspected bribery in the sport. The Australian Cricket Board, whose former chairman Malcolm Gray, is the ICC chairman, will share the blame with the world’s governing body for failing to dig deeper when in 1995 they fined two Australian Test cricketers Mark Waugh and Shane Warne for taking money from bookmakers in return for information about teams, pitches and weather.Rumours of widespread corruption in international cricket came to light last year when Cronje was accidentally picked up discussing the manipulation of matches on a mobile telephone in India by Delhi Police, prompting the ICC to introduce stringent penalties for all cricketers found guilty of any involvement with betting interests.Cronje, Azharuddin and Malik have been banned for life. Alec Stewart, who is playing for England in the current Lord’s Test against Pakistan, was interviewed by Sir Paul during his investigation, providing information about the England tour of India in 1992-93 when he was vice-captain.
