The MCC, the independent governor of cricket’s laws, has recommended the ICC overturn its awarding of a draw for the disputed England-Pakistan Test at The Oval in 2006. Originally the match was ruled the first forfeit in the game’s history, but the ICC changed the result at an executive board meeting in July. The MCC world cricket committee, which includes current India captain Anil Kumble and former Test leaders Rahul Dravid, Michael Atherton, Shaun Pollock and Steve Waugh, met on Saturday and Sunday in New Delhi and decided “cricket is the worse for this decision”.The committee chairman Tony Lewis wanted confirmation from the ICC that the original outcome of the match should stand. “The ICC has no power under the laws of cricket to decide that results should be altered, whether it feels it’s ‘inappropriate’ or otherwise,” the former England captain Lewis said. “The ICC’s decision is wrong and sets a very dangerous precedent. Cricket is the worse for this decision.”Majid Khan, the former Pakistan captain, said the committee’s decision was unanimous “simply because the rule states that you can’t overturn a decision”. “The result should stay as is,” he said. When asked what the reaction to the decision would be in Pakistan, Majid said “we’ll wait and see”.The controversy began after tea on the fourth day of the fourth Test when Inzamam-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, refused to lead his team back on to the field following Australia umpire Darrell Hair and West Indian Billy Doctrove enforcing a five-run penalty for ball tampering. It was a decision that initially gave England victory and resulted in a suspension for Hair, who was reinstated after an employment tribunal hearing in October 2007, following protests from Pakistan. Hair has since stood down from elite-level umpiring.Inzamam, who is now retired and playing in the unofficial Indian Cricket League, was fined for four games for bringing the game into disrepute. The team was cleared of the original ball-tampering allegations.”The board’s decision was based on the view that in light of the unique set of circumstances, the original result of the match was felt to be inappropriate,” the ICC said in a statement in July. The ruling meant England won the four-match series 2-0 instead of 3-0.”As far as we’re concerned there is no record of any other result [but a forfeit],” Lewis said. “We’re not reversing the ICC result, we’re just saying they had no place to do that. We, MCC, wrote the rules in 1788 and the laws working party now is run by Robert Griffiths QC. Legally, there is absolutely no way the ICC can change the laws of the game, which it did do.”The committee also supported the umpire review system that was used in the recent Sri Lanka-India Test series and agreed to work with the ICC in ensuring the primacy of Test cricket. It also vowed to complete further research into trialling pink balls in the hope they could be used in day-night Tests. An increased focus on fostering spin bowlers was also discussed along with a recommendation that umpires should not give the players the option to leave the field for bad light. MCC’s 18-man world cricket committee is charged with improving the game and its governance. As the sport’s law makers, the MCC has the power to alter the rules while using its influence to urge the ICC to change its position.

Sutton's enterprise fails to pay off

After looking set for a good finish, following an enterprising declaration by Luke Sutton, Lancashire’s match against Nottinghamshire faded away into a draw on a pitch that, even after four days, did not provide enough assistance for the bowlers

John Ward at Old Trafford09-Jun-2008
ScorecardAfter looking set for a good finish, following an enterprising declaration by Luke Sutton, Lancashire’s match against Nottinghamshire faded away into a draw on a pitch that, even after four days, did not provide enough assistance for the bowlers. A classic over from Dominic Cork, where he claimed three wickets, gave the home side brief hope of victory, but they were unable to maintain their advantage and Nottinghamshire finished comfortably on 178 for 4.Lancashire, 146 for 4 overnight, with Faf du Plessis and Steven Croft at the crease, began with an air of briskness that was a little deceptive. The batsmen couldn’t find the boundary, and finally a lofted drive from Croft off Graeme Swann found the fielder at a fairly deep mid-on instead. The first hour brought 57 runs, which was probably below the target. Sutton settled in before beginning to open up, while du Plessis reached his 50 off 82 balls.Sutton surprised most people by declaring more than half an hour before lunch, as he lofted a catch to cover and was dismissed for 38, leaving du Plessis unbeaten on 53. One observer said, quite seriously, that it was the most positive declaration he had seen from Lancashire in years. Certainly it left Nottinghamshire with an interest in the game, as they were set 315 runs in a minimum of 73 overs, and set up the match for an interesting afternoon.Nottinghamshire handled the six overs before lunch confidently, scoring 32 without loss, mostly off the wayward Sajid Mahmood. Paul Franks was sent in to open with Will Jefferson, whose regular partner Matt Wood had been forced off the field just before the declaration after taking a powerful blow in the back at short leg. With Adam Voges also injured, this may have been a factor in prompting Sutton’s early declaration.Cork again took centre stage, although perhaps pushed the boundaries with some of his appealing. He put up a major performance when shouting for a catch at the wicket when Jefferson hooked on 12, celebrating noisily with his team-mates without even looking at the umpire, who had not moved his finger.Jefferson swung Keedy for six over midwicket, but then moved across his stumps to be trapped lbw by the rampant Cork for 26. Then Mark Wagh was caught down the leg side second ball, but the best was yet to come. Next was the ball of the day, a superb inswinger that Samit Patel could only edge onto his stumps. Cork had taken three wickets in four balls, and this one over shattered all Nottinghamshire’s hopes of victory.Franks and Chris Read now concentrated on survival, and they successfully steadied a very shaky ship. They survived almost until tea, when Franks fell for 42 to the leg-spin of du Plessis, Lancashire’s second spinner in this match. Franks deserved great credit for the way he handled his unaccustomed role, but his departure brought in Voges, nursing a painful hand. However, it proved to be the last wicket of the day. Rather strangely, Cork was not brought back for a second spell until after tea, without success. The pitch was just a little too placid and a potentially good fizzled out into a rather dull draw, as Read (71) and Voges (19) comfortably batted out time against bowlers without the inspiration or assistance to do further damage.Sutton, whose declaration was about as well-timed as could have been expected without the benefit of hindsight, called it a day with 11 overs still to go. Nottinghamshire were left grateful that their middle order, after failing them in the first innings, had now come to their rescue. The atmosphere on the field was not always pleasant during the four days, and the umpires could have been a little more proactive in encouraging the right spirit.

Shaky England insists Ashes preparation still on track

BRISBANE, Nov 3 AAP – England insisted there was nothing to read into its bumbling display against Queensland today as the tourists prepared for a shot at the world champion Australians at the Gabba on Thursday.England dropped six catches on the second day of the three-day tour match against Queensland as Martin Love (250) drove the Bulls to a first innings total of 582 at Allan Border Field. But the tourists were smiling at stumps after Michael Vaughan (49 not out) and Marcus Trescothick (46) reeled off a slick century stand to take England to 1-106 with one day remaining. Both openers were impressive but that did nothing to wipe away the question marks hanging over the Test bowling attack, which toiled for 158 overs against a Queensland team missing Australian opener Matthew Hayden. The wicket was flat and the outfield relatively small but the tourists had themselves to blame after dropping Love on 124, 166, 170 and 180.Some of the catches were difficult but England must take similar chances if it is to support its bowlers against Australia.Assistant coach Graham Dilley agreed with captain Nasser Hussain’s assessment that England’s attack lacked potency on flat wickets. That is an uncomfortable admission against an Australian team possessing one of the most dangerous attacks ever assembled in Test cricket, regardless of the conditions.”You can this series the problem is going to be how we get 20 wickets against the Test side on flat pitches,” Dilley said.”Although it’s not the way we would choose to have done it, it’s good that we’ve had a long bowl before the first Test.”It’s a very flat pitch – I’ve not seen a flatter pitch anywhere.”But we’ve got to take all the chances we get. You can’t afford to give the great players of Australia more than one chance.”Love rode his luck as he posted his fifth career double century and the lower order batsmen joined in, with Ashley Noffke (30) and Nathan Hauritz (31) both hitting sixes.Noffke was caught on the eastern bank by a spectator who showed England how it was done, putting down his meat pie, taking the catch and then saluting the crowd.Love hit one six and 27 fours in his 542-minute stay, which was outstanding despite the dropped catches.”It must have looked like I was trying to get out but that’s how it goes. When you’re having some luck, that’s what happens,” Love said.”But the bowling today was probably better than yesterday and the wicket quickened up.”(Andrew) Caddick bowled the best line and length of the quicks and (Ashley) Giles turned it a bit today.”Caddick (2-89 from 31 overs) and Giles (3-124 from 40) were the busiest bowlers while Simon Jones (1-96), Matthew Hoggard (1-112) and Andrew Flintoff (2-112) will appreciate any assistance in the Gabba wicket this week. But the tourists showed they could also score runs as Vaughan and Trescothick shone in the final session. Both batsmen drove strongly while also playing some excellent shots square of the wicket in a clear sign they can challenge the Australian quicks.

Pundit says Billy Sharp could be key for Sheffield United

Former Sheffield United striker Dean Windass is confident that legendary Blade Billy Sharp will be an important player for the club next season.

The Sheffield-born frontman has scored more than 150 goals across three separate spells, although he struggled to stamp his authority on Sheffield United’s two-year stay in the Premier League and was unable to save them from relegation.

The previous two seasons were Sharp’s first two in England’s top-flight, and the 35-year-old managed to score just six times in 41 outings, having been mainly used as a bit-part player behind the likes of David McGoldrick and Oli McBurnie, featuring for just 728 minutes across the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

However, Sharp is proven at Championship level, and scored 23 league goals when Sheffield United won promotion back in 2018-2019.

By the end of next season, Sharp will be 36, and despite being one of six first-team strikers currently at Bramall Lane, Windass believes he could still prove the difference for Slavisa Jokanovic’s team.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Billy Sharp will be a big player for them next year. I know he’s getting on a little bit, but he’ll still get you goals in the Championship.”

Phillips backs Celtic to beat Midtjylland

Kevin Phillips has suggested that Celtic will overcome FC Midtjylland in their two-legged UEFA Champions League qualifier next month when speaking to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Celtic gear up for crucial 2021/22 fixtures

As the Celts look ahead to the 2021/22 campaign, much intrigue will surround how they go about trying to reclaim the Premiership title at the first time of asking. However, European football will also take precedence next season as the Hoops aim to bring raucous nights back to Parkhead against elite clubs from the continent.

Celtic are scheduled to begin their quest for group stage action at home to FC Midtjylland on 20 July, before the return leg eight days later [Daily Record].

In a recent interview with Football Insider, former Premier League striker turned pundit Phillips was quick to talk up the Bhoys’ chances of taking the first step towards making the group stage of the tournament.

The Latest: Phillips tips Celtic to defeat Midtjylland

Speaking about Celtic’s chances of defeating their Danish opponents, Phillips told Football Insider: “It will be difficult because they’ve got some history in European football. It won’t be easy, it never is.

“You would have to say it’s a big season for them this year. With the new manager of course at a big club. “But I can definitely see them coming through that over two legs.

“I wouldn’t say they’ll come through it comfortably but if they get off to a flyer that could set them up nicely for the season ahead.”

The Verdict: Phillips point out glaring reality for Postecoglou

The former Sunderland striker makes an excellent point regarding the difficulties Celtic may face against the Danish Superliga runners-up. If they do indeed make it through the second-round tie, the Bhoys will be just four games away from Europe’s premier competition, as well as being in line to make a windfall to the tune of €15.6m (£13.4m) [UEFA].

Furthermore, it would also be the first time Ange Postecoglou’s men will have featured in the group phase since the 2017/18 campaign under Brendan Rodgers [Transfermarkt]. Having flunked out against the likes of Ferencvaros, CFR Cluj and AEK Athens since then [Transfermarkt], Phillips is right to suggest that the Parkhead club may not have it all too easy and that the new manager faces some pivotal matches early in his reign.

If the Celts can recruit correctly before the crunch double header, there is every chance they could secure a morale-boosting win to kickstart their 2021/22 campaign. Recently linked with moves for Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke and Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan, they seem to be getting their ducks in a row well in advance.

In other news, Celtic are locked in talks for a 31-goal striker.
