Whirlwind Willey puts Northants in sight

First with the ball, and now with the bat. For the second day in a row at Wantage Road, a staggering burst of acceleration from David Willey transformed an otherwise well-matched contest to leave Northamptonshire in sight of their first first-class victory since their in 2013.Willey’s three wickets in four balls to dock Gloucestershire’s tail on Monday afternoon were matched for dramatic effect by a brutal 79-ball century. At the age of 25, it was the first first-class hundred of a career that has been plagued by injury for the past 18 months, and it laid waste to a diligent day’s work from a Gloucestershire attack that, while never quite dominating, had held their opponents in check for the first session and a half.As well as seven fours, Willey cracked six sixes in his onslaught, four of which came in the space of eight balls after tea, as he turned up the heat against a demoralised Gloucestershire, whose fielders wilted in the bright spring sunshine.A rash of fielding errors were compounded in the late-innings frenzy when Rory Kleinveldt, who made 48 from 52 balls, was dropped twice in as many overs by Will Tavare in the deep. Willey needed no such lives, however, and had hurtled to 104 not out from 83 balls when the declaration came from Alex Wakely. It might be an affront to suggest to Willey that the gulf between first- and second-division cricket is widening by the year, but then again, as the son of one of the county’s most hard-bitten campaigners, he’s nobody’s fool either. The team that failed to win a match all last season and lost by an innings on eight occasions, has played with a combination of flair and resolve that they were unable to produce in the top flight last summer. Today’s outing is surely a harbinger of better times ahead. With that in mind, the day’s unsung heroes were the sixth-wicket pair of Josh Cobb and Rob Keogh, who added 101 to shore up an innings that was in distinct jeopardy in the day’s early exchanges. After resuming on 68 for 2 overnight, Northants lost Rob Newton to a loose cut to point for 19 before Wakely attempted to work Liam Norwell off his pads and lobbed a simple return catch to the bowler.Adam Rossington then flashed at Norwood before he was set and top-edged a miscued pull to point for 4. At 110 for 5, a major renovation was required by the home team. Cobb, his allegiances newly transferred from Leicestershire, dug in while Keogh made the early running, but having waited 64 balls for his first boundary, he celebrated in style with four more in a row off the toiling James Fuller, whose 19 overs were dispatched for 114 runs.Cobb was the first to reach his fifty, from exactly 100 balls, before attempting to up the ante against Kieran Noema-Barnett and holing out to mid-on for 58. And Keogh was denied what would have been a hugely deserved hundred when, on 81, he was trapped lbw by the left-arm spin of Dent.By that stage, however, Willey was firmly in the zone and all Gloucestershire’s players could do was sit tight and wait for the inevitable. The declaration duly came with a tricky 15-over spell to negotiate, which Dent and Tavare managed with few alarms. By the close they had reached 35 for 0, still trailing by a hefty 419.

Quantas vezes me protegeram e defenderam meu trabalho?

Nepal, Hong Kong to tour Sri Lanka in November

The top four Asian Associates – Nepal, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and UAE – are set to tour Sri Lanka after the SLC approved a request from the ACC development manager Bandula Warnapura. Nepal and Hong Kong will be the first two teams out of the four to tour Sri Lanka in November. The decision was taken “to support the region’s non-Test playing countries,” the SLC said.”It’s a very beneficial offer by Sri Lanka,” Warnapura said. “Not only can our teams play high-level cricket, they will be exposed to facilities and a cricket culture that will help to develop their abilities in preparation for global events.” The tours will include four three-day matches against SLC representative sides along with a one-day match and three T20 internationals between Hong Kong and Nepal.Nepal won the ICC WCL Division Three in Malaysia on Thursday, by beating Uganda in the final and lost only one match in the tournament. They played three T20Is in the World T20 earlier this year in Bangladesh and won two of them. Their coach Pubudu Dassanayake said they were “grateful for the opportunity and [were] looking forward to play the first ever T20I series as well as the three-day games.” Nepal will arrive in Sri Lanka on November 7, while Hong Kong will reach on November 17.Hong Kong director of cricket Charlie Burke also expressed his gratitude and said they were “delighted to accept the offer.”

CA removes Prior fumbles package

Cricket Australia has removed a video from its website after the ECB alleged it breached their copyright agreement

Cricket Australia has removed a video from its website after the ECB alleged it breached copyright.ESPNcricinfo understands that the ECB contacted CA to express its concerns after cricket.com.au ran a video entitled “Future dire for Prior”, which featured a montage of mistakes by the former England wicketkeeper, Matt Prior, set to music. Not only did the ECB feel the tone of the montage was inappropriate for a national cricket board, but it pointed out that the footage was the property of News International, which owns the broadcaster Sky, and the ECB.While CA contested that the montage was part of a legitimate news agenda – and therefore appropriate for use – it agreed to remove it.CA also defended the tone of the piece. While the ECB felt the images, which showed a series of fumbles by Prior without any attempt to explain his injury issues, was mocking and not appropriate for a national board, CA insists that it reflected a debate taking place in the UK media.”Cricket.com.au now operates as an independent news outlet as part of a joint venture with Nine Entertainment Co,” a CA spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “They chose to publish the story and accompanying vision as it reflected media commentary taking place in the UK at the time.”Prior announced his decision to take a break from international cricket for the remainder of the year in a bid to recover full fitness a couple of days after the montage was published. It is not the first time Cricket Australia’s multimedia operation has courted controversy. During the 2013 Ashes, the official Twitter account reacted to a third umpire decision to reprieve Ian Bell in the Lord’s Test with the comment “That decision sucked ass #bullshit” while, during the 2013-14 Ashes series, they tweeted a bizarre and casually racist picture of four Sikh men dressed as Teletubbies with the caption “Will the real Monty Panesar please stand up?”And, while CA stresses the independence of its media operation, the fact is that it remains at least partially funded by the governing body and it is unthinkable that a montage with a similar theme to the Prior video would have been run about an out-of-form Australia player.

Brilliant Bopara takes Essex joint top

Ravi Bopara’s non selection for England is very much Essex’s gain who have him in the form of his life. He smashed 81 in just 44 balls to send Essex joint top of the South Group of the NatWest T20

Ravi Bopara can shoulder very little of the blame for England’s winter failings, but at a time of flux in the Test side he has been pointedly ignored to the fact where adding to his 13 caps has never seemed such a distant possibility.Bopara’s unbeaten 81 from 44 balls offered further evidence for his belief that he is in the best form of his life and by granting Essex victory with one over to spare took them alongside Hampshire at the top of the South Division.More often than not, on his return to the county circuit, Bopara produces the type of striking performances that raise questions over his in ability to forge a permanent spot across all formats for England. His worth to Essex, however, is rarely belittled. On the back of a Championship hundred at the same ground this week, Bopara constructed an innings of consummate mastery that had most of the Canterbury crowd, despite their gloom at seeing as formidable Kent total overhauled, heading home satisfied with their evening’s entertainment.Essex made a steep target seem like child’s play – admittedly on a true surface – as Bopara combined with Ryan ten Doeschate to dismantle a Kent attack stymied by fielding lapses. Three chances were shelled, the most costly when Bopara was dropped by Daniel Bell-Drummond on 37.Bopara batted with a swagger that almost made it look as if he hand-picked which deliveries he wanted to dispatch with disdain. A combination brutality, deft strokeplay and inventiveness left Rob Key, the Kent captain, scratching his head.At the other end, ten Doeschate played the role of subordinate but was equally destructive after receiving a reprieve early-on when Doug Bollinger dropped a straight-forward chance at long-on.The Essex captain fell a couple short of an opportunistic half-century but Bopara ensured the job was complete without any hiccups. Often labelled ‘a finisher’, but rarely able to complete the job in an England shirt, he lived up to the tag by striking consecutive boundaries off James Tredwell in the penultimate over and then swatting the winning runs down the ground in fitting fashion.”It was good fun,” Bopara said afterwards. “We went out there with a plan and we executed it brilliantly. I’m in the best form of my life and I’ve been hitting it well so long may it continue.”For all the attention given to overseas luminaries and T20 specialists, Key continues to demonstrate that conventional batting in the shortest format yields healthy dividends. In scoring a half-century of his own, and in the process moving to the top of the competition’s run-scoring charts, he gave his side the perfect platform. However, the loss of Key succeeded the departure of Bell-Drummond and Essex managed to take a stranglehold of proceedings after the hosts made a blistering start; the openers had put on 119 one ball into the 13th over. But, two wickets in the following over from Tymal Mills in the fourteenth over checked their momentum.Mills, who bowled with pace, was expensive throughout as he struggled for a consistent line and length but provided an extra dimension to the attack in the second-half of the innings. A couple of late cameos from Sam Billings and Sam Northeast lifted Kent in the final overs but they were well below par; they had scored 218 here last week. That said, the wicket of Mark Pettini in the first over – an ugly heave across the line – hinted at the extravagance that was going to be required to chase down the tasking total. Instead, Pettini’s departure was but a minor hitch as Jesse Ryder and then Tom Westley cracked thirteen boundaries between them in the Powerplay overs to silence the home crowd and provide the platform for the middle-order. Bopara and ten Doeschate did the rest.

Tigers offer new start for Michael Hill

Tasmania have offered Michael Hill a chance to emulate Ed Cowan by making the most of a new start after a stuttering career in his home state of Victoria

Tasmania have offered the former Australia Under-19 captain Michael Hill a chance to emulate the likes of Ed Cowan and Michael Klinger by making the most of a new start, after a stuttering career in his home state of Victoria.Though highly rated when moving through the junior ranks – he also led Victoria to the Under-19 national title in 2007 – Hill has never quite managed to make a state place his own with the Bushrangers, a pair of first-class centuries the high points over the course of 19 appearances that have tallied 823 runs at 26.54.These figures are remarkably similar to those of Cowan with New South Wales before he too made the move south to Tasmania as a fringe left-handed batsman, and soon carved out a top order niche that ultimately led to Test selection.Klinger, recently signed by Western Australia, was likewise the beneficiary of a move away from home, building on a mediocre record in Victoria with numerous strong years with South Australia. At 25, Hill was looking for fresh pastures after the Bushrangers chose not to include him on their list for 2014-15.Andrew Dykes, the Tasmania general manager of cricket, said Hill is “a proven top order batsman and has an incredible amount of talent”. His chance was opened up partly by Mark Cosgrove’s decision to move back home to South Australia following his own successful stint with the Tigers.Elsewhere the Tigers were ultimately able to retain the services of Cowan, Tim Paine, Alex Doolan and Ben Hilfenhaus, though none were named in the state’s initial contract list.Cowan and his family are set to spend more time living in their hometown of Sydney, but flexible living arrangements will allow the opener to stay with Tasmania after he pondered signing with NSW.Like Cowan, Hilfenhaus returns to the Tigers’ contract list after losing his CA deal, while Doolan will hope to be upgraded to a central contract with further national appearances after a promising start at No. 3 on the testing battlegrounds of South Africa.Aiden Blizzard, Adam Maher, Ben Laughlin and Steve Cazzulino are among the Tigers players not offered new state contracts for the coming summer.Tasmania squad: George Bailey (CA), Jackson Bird, Luke Butterworth, Ed Cowan, Xavier Doherty, Alex Doolan, Ben Dunk, James Faulkner (CA), Andrew Fekete, Evan Gulbis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hill, Hamish Kingston, Dominic Michael, Tim Paine, Sam Rainbird, Clive Rose, Jordan Silk, Timm van der Gugten, Jon Wells. Rookies: Gabe Bell, Ryan Lees, Beau Webster, Sean Willis

Run-outs deny SL Women series win

As many as four run-outs, including that of top-scorer Chamari Atapattu denied Sri Lanka Women a chance to claim the series as they lost by nine runs to India Women in the second T20I in Vizianagaram.Chasing 128, Sri Lanka were floundering at 15 for 2 in the third over before a 41-run stand between Atapattu and Shashikala Siriwardene helped the side recover. India pegged back with four wickets between the 14th and 17th overs, including run-outs off successive deliveries in the 16th, to leave the visitors at 101 for 7. Atapattu was one of the batters to be dismissed in that period, for a run-a-ball 40. The 27-run target proved to be beyond the lower order and Sri Lanka finished at 118 for 8.Earlier, India were stuttering at 29 for 4 in the sixth over after being asked to bat, but useful knocks from Jhulan Goswami, Amita Sharma and Sonia Dabir helped the side reach 127 for 8. All three batsmen scored 23 and added valuable runs for the fifth, sixth and seventh wickets in quick time. Pacer Udeshika Prabodhani was the most successful bowler, finishing with 3 for 16 in her four overs.

Assam bundle Tripura out for 136

A round-up of the fourth-round matches played in Group C of the Ranji Trophy on November 21, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2013
ScorecardMedium-pacer Arup Das spearheaded an incisive performance from the Assam bowlers, as they bundled Tripura out for 136 on the first day in Agartala.Arup finished with 4 for 34, while the seamers Abu Nechim and Pritam Das took three wickets apiece, to bowl the hosts out in 55 overs. Abhijit Dey was the only source of resistance for Tripura, as he scored a patient 54 – his third first-class fifty – which included 10 fours, but he received little support from the other end, with none of the other batsmen making more than 16.Assam, in reply, were 85 for 1 at stumps. The opener Pallavkumar Das was bowled by Rana Dutta in the 15th over, but Dheeraj Jadhav remained unbeaten at 40, having struck six fours.
ScorecardRishi Dhawan picked up his second consecutive five-for, to help Himachal Pradesh stifle Hyderabad’s batting order, and restrict them to 237 in Dharamsala. Dhawan, who already has five-wicket hauls against Goa and Jammu & Kashmir in this season’s Ranji Trophy, ended Thursday with figures of 5 for 75.Hyderabad, put in to bat, were earlier buoyed by a 65 from the opener Tirumalasetti Suman, and his 79-run second-wicket stand with Dwaraka Ravi Teja. Suman fell to Akshay Chauhan in the 29th over, but the visitors recovered with another crucial partnership – 46 for the fourth wicket between Hanuma Vihari and Bavanaka Sandeep- that took them to 184.However, once Dhawan dismissed Vihari for 31 in the 57th over, Hyderabad collapsed and lost all the remaining wickets for just 53 runs, with the final scalp coming from Waqar Ahmed, who had Pragyan Ojha caught behind by Aatish Bhalaik off what turned out to be the last ball of the day.
ScorecardBandeep Singh’s maiden first-class fifty helped J&K overcome a middle-order wobble and take the team to 173 for 6 against Andhra in Anantapur, as the match remained evenly poised heading into day two.Bandeep hit seven fours and two sixes during his unbeaten 68, to help the team overcome a slow start in which the openers and captain Parvez Rasool were all dismissed inside 18 overs. Bandeep and Manzoor Dar added 68 for the fourth wicket, but Dar was run-out for 35 in the 58th over, and in the next, Shaik Basha removed Mohsin Iqbal and Owais Shah off successive deliveries to leave J&K rattling at 113 for 6.Samiullah Beigh, coming in at No.8, however supported Bandeep well at the other end, as the pair led the recovery by contributing 60 runs before the end of play.
ScorecardHarshad Khadiwale and Kedar Jadhav continued their run feast, scoring centuries on the first day for the second week in succession as Maharashtra plundered 360 for 3 against Goa at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on the outskirts of Pune.Read the full report here.
