Gibson envies England resilience

West Indies had the game firmly in their grip on several occasions, but every time, England managed to squeeze out of trouble

Siddarth Ravindran at the Chidambaram Stadium17-Mar-2011England’s World Cup campaign has provided enough thrills for even the most ardent adrenaline junkie, and though they lurched from terrific to terrible once again, they soaked up the blows from West Indies at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and hung on for a tight win that keeps them in the tournament.West Indies had the game firmly in their grip on several occasions, but every time, England managed to squeeze out of trouble. At 151 for 6, England’s tail was exposed but West Indies didn’t bring on their spearhead, Kemar Roach, and instead chose to use the less menacing Sulieman Benn and Kieron Pollard, which allowed Luke Wright to lead a revival.During the chase, they had England on the mat, first after the all-out-attack from Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy, and later when the Andre Russell-Ramnaresh Sarwan stand took them close, but on both occasions a clutch of wickets undermined their chances of victory. West Indies coach Ottis Gibson wants his side to grasp some of England’s scrapping ability, which he feels will be vital for Caribbean cricket to rise again.”England have been a resilient side for a long time, they don’t always play their best game, but somebody stands up, today it was Tredwell, Luke Wright’s been waiting for a game a while as well, he had a good game with the bat,” Gibson said after the game. “They have got the resilience that we are looking for.”West Indies came out chasing 243 as though it was 343, with Gayle initially setting a scorching pace before Sammy blasted three sixes to keep the run-rate at seven an over. It was a bizarre scorecard, with the top six batsmen either going berzerk at close to two runs a ball, or dropping anchor at a strike-rate of 45 or less – as though only first gear and top gear existed.Gibson said the power-hitting from Gayle and Sammy was part of their strategy. “The hardness of the ball made it easier for stroke-play, as the ball got softer it became a lot harder to bat,” he said. “We knew the ball would stay a little bit in the pitch and that it would turn a lot more when it was softer, so the strategy was to capitalise on the early overs which we did. We were always at five an over (required rate). What we needed was somebody to see us through, and that didn’t happen.”While using Sammy as a pinch-hitter was a planned move, pushing the wicketkeeper Devon Thomas to No. 4 was less so. “A toilet break,” Gibson revealed as the reason behind the change. “Sarwan couldn’t make it to the crease in time, that’s why Thomas came.”Despite the defeat, Gibson said that the performance of the two newcomers, allrounder Russell and legspinner Devendra Bishoo, gave him cause for optimism. Russell picked up four wickets before his quickfire 49 took West Indies close to the finish line. “Great performance from Andre Russell today in only his second international game,” he said, “bowling very well and then making a good 49, putting on a good partnership with Sarwan.”Bishoo impressed on debut, with three wickets including those of Jonathan Trott and Eoin Morgan. “You saw the emergence of young Devendra Bishoo, another little gem we have known about for a while, who came here and did a great job with his legspinners,” Gibson said. “Roach, Russell, Dwayne Bravo, all those guys are under 25, they are going to be the nucleus of the West Indies team for a long time to come. As a coach, there is a hell of a lot to take out of this [defeat] and move forward with.”The defeat in Chennai means West Indies could face a must-win tie against India on Sunday, if Bangladesh manage to upset South Africa on Saturday. A Bangladesh defeat will almost certainly send West Indies into the quarter-finals, irrespective of the outcome against India. “We haven’t beaten a top team in some 20 months,” said Gibson. “We would like to do that [on Sunday], we had another opportunity today, we didn’t take it but we are getting closer.”

Afghanistan upset Pakistan to reach final

Afghanistan 125 for 8 (Noori 35) beat Pakistan 103 for 7 (Latif 26) by 22 runs

Afghanistan celebrate reaching the final•Associated Press

Afghanistan stunned a second-string Pakistan in the semi-finals of the Asian Games in Guangzhou to continue their fairytale run in cricket over the past two years. This victory assures them of at least a silver, boosting the medals tally of a nation that has only two medals – both in taekwondo – in the Asian Games. They will face Bangladesh, who beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in the second semi-final, in Friday’s title match. It’s been a low-scoring tournament so far, and Afghanistan’s 125, after being sent in, was a competitive total. Eighteen-year-old Shabir Noori top scored with 35 to revive Afghanistan after they had slid to 55 for 4, but another bunch of wickets towards the end prevented a big final push.Pakistan’s opening pair, Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, began the chase in a hurry, racing to 30 off three overs, seemingly setting the platform for a straightforward victory. Sharjeel then fell lbw to Mirwaiz Ashraf for 23, but Latif guided Pakistan to 60 for 1. There was a heated exchange between Latif and Afghanistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad, which needed the umpires to intervene. Latif was then dismissed lbw, and Naeemuddin Qazi was run out soon after, and two wickets in an over from offspinner Karim Sadiq left Pakistan at 68 for 5.With the asking-rate mounting, the Pakistan lower-order was unable to find the boundary and Afghanistan completed a famous upset.”It’s a big win for Afghanistan,” their captain Mohammad Nabi said. “Every person there is watching the match and everybody is happy about this win. I’m very satisfied because we have fantastic fitness levels and the boys have worked very hard in every position, whether it’s fielding, bowling or batting. “The vice-captain, Sadiq, said the whole the country was behind the team. “On TV last night in Afghanistan, they told people to pray that we would win,” he said. “Tonight they will be celebrating all over the country. It’s a dream for us.”

Arsenal eye Everton striker Calvert-Lewin

Everton reportedly now risk losing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Arsenal in the summer.

The Lowdown: Injury misery

Calvert-Lewin has endured an injury-plagued season, playing just 14 times in total over all competitions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

In turn, the Goodison Park faithful have struggled massively, lurking just outside of the relegation zone.

There is no doubting his ability and how vital is to the team, after all, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘one of the best’ in his position ahead of the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Latest: Arsenal lurking

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist and transfer expert David Ornstein has revealed that Calvert-Lewin is now among the options considered by Arsenal to strengthen their attack this summer.

However, the Gunners are also considering signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

The Verdict: Keep

Yes, Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries this term, but he has already shown his worth to the Toffees and remains one of their key players.

The striker has 56 goals in total for the club over six consecutive campaigns, while also contributing a handy 17 assists (Transfermarkt).

At 25 years of age, the England international still has his best years ahead of him, and so Frank Lampard’s side will not want to let him go cheaply, especially to another club in the Premier League.

However, if they were to get relegated, they may not have a choice.

We still need to improve – Mortaza

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has said his team must perform better to build on their win in the first ODI against New Zealand. Bangladesh won by nine runs using the Duckworth/Lewis method, but Mortaza mentioned a number of areas in which the team needed to improve.”Our fielding was not up to the mark and the middle-order batting was also a concern for us,” Mortaza said. “Most of the top-order batsmen got starts but could not carry it on.”Mortaza turned his ankle in his second over and was forced to watch the match from the sidelines. While he wished he could have contributed to the victory, he said the win was the important thing and made him forget all about the pain. “All credit must go to the boys who played brilliantly as a unit to win the game, especially Shakib [Al Hasan] who was great. One bowler was short but it was made up brilliantly.”Bangladesh’s total of 228 was 15 to 20 runs short of their target, according to Mortaza, but the team was confident it could defend the score. “New Zealand got off to a good start but we bounced back brilliantly. We knew that it would not be easy for New Zealand to chase down the total if we took two or three early wickets. Riyad [Mahmudullah] and Naeem [Islam] both gave good support.”This is a nice birthday gift for me,” said Mortaza, who turned 27 yesterday.New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was disappointed with his side’s failure to chase down a target he thought was gettable. Their revised target was 210, but they had only 37 overs to chase it in. “Any loss is disappointing but we should have chased the score, but we lost wickets at regular intervals and at crucial times,” he said.Vettori was full of praise for Shakib, who made a brisk half-century to take Bangladesh past 200, and then took four wickets, including a double-strike in the 15th over to remove the rampant Brendon McCullum and Grant Elliott. “His batting late in the innings gave them the impetus,” Vettori said, “and his bowling posed a danger.”

Journo gives Man United update on Pogba

Manchester United and Paul Pogba have had a rollercoaster relationship over his career and now with his contract ending in a matter of weeks it seems that there are no chances of the Frenchman extending his stay, especially with new reports emerging about his future away from the club.

What’s the word?

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Paul Pogba has been made an offer by Paris Saint-Germain to secure his future back in France.

The report suggests that the terms of the contract are lower than the final offer that Manchester United put on the table for Pogba in their desperate attempts to keep him at Old Trafford.

Despite this offer from PSG, the 29-year-old allegedly would prefer a move to Juventus according to Luckhurst.

One passage of the report reads: “Dressing room sources at United say Pogba is effectively ‘gone’ as he approaches the final two months of his contract and the club has been planning for his expected departure for most of the season. United intend to sign at least one midfielder in the summer.”

Supporters will be buzzing

It’s fair to say that the reception from Man United supporters has been mixed in his second chance at the club over the last six years, with the player and his agent, Mina Raiola, having a very public and at times fractured relationship with the club, and after his latest rejection to extend his stay supporters will surely be buzzing about his departure.

The midfielder has won the EFL Cup twice and Europa League at the club, scoring 39 goals and contributing 51 assists in 230 appearances for the Red Devils, with a goal involvement every 2.5 games played which is an output that will surely be missed at Old Trafford.

Despite a consistent attacking output over the years, it seems that now could be a good time for the World Cup winner to move on so that Manchester United can concentrate on finding their next star to play for the new manager who will be appointed this summer, and the club will ultimately save a staggering £15m a year on Pogba’s current wages.

Not only that, but it will rid the club of one of the club’s sizeable egos, something that can only be a good thing for the club moving forward.

Currently the powers at the club are focused on finding the right manager to come in and change the direction Man United have been heading in for some time and moving forward letting go of long-term players like Pogba could be a real blessing in disguise as they attempt to start a new era, with a new manager and new vision to get back to winning trophies.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Tottenham’s Douglas Luiz interest

Tottenham are preparing a £32m offer for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, and, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Luiz has just 18 months remaining on his Villa Park contract and has recently been linked with a move to Arsenal. However, it seems as if their rivals, Spurs, are now looking at the Brazilian with the deadline fast approaching.

According to The Daily Mail, there is a sense of panic around Tottenham after missing out on numerous targets, with the club now preparing a £32m bid for Luiz.

They add that Spurs look set to fail with their pursuit of the central midfielder too though, who Steven Gerrard is keen to keep.

Reports prior to this update suggested that Villa were set to open talks over a new contract for Luiz, and Tottenham’s interest may well speed up that process.

Villa fans react

@villareport relayed The Daily Mail’s claim regarding Luiz on Twitter. This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with reaction mixed over a possible exit.

Spurs news: Late Dele Alli exit likely

Dele Alli is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur before deadline day next week…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who delivered a fresh update on the 25-year-old’s situation after he was left out of the squad to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

“Dele Alli left out of Tottenham squad for Chelsea today in last game before transfer window shuts a week tomorrow. #THFC open to 25yo midfielder moving on loan (contract 2024). No appealing offers yet – good chance it happens late,” he tweeted alongside an accompanying article.

Whilst the north Londoners are yet to receive any sort of offer that is appealing, it’s thought that it would be a pretty straightforward deal to complete, so if it rumbles on towards deadline day, it will be no issue.

Once tipped to be worth over £100m back in 2017, the 37-cap England international is now valued at just £22.5m by Transfermarkt.

Time’s up?

Things have quickly gone from bad to worse for Alli.

He struggled to make much of a mark under Jose Mourinho, who branded him “lazy” in training, last season and it was easy to dismiss this as another one of the Portuguese’s antics after his relationship with Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

But now he’s hardly featured for Nuno Santo or Antonio Conte this season, going from an England regular and the “best 21-year-old in the world”, according to Mauricio Pochettino several years ago, to a bit-part backup for a side that was knocked out of the Europa Conference League group stages.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Across the 2016/17 and 2017/18 top-flight campaigns, the attacking dynamo delivered 27 goals and 17 assists from 69 starts, via WhoScored, leading to comparisons to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.

But since then, it’s a frustrating tale of just nine goals and six assists in the last two-and-a-half years of league action, leaving much of the Lilywhites faithful angry with his attitude and poor form.

As relayed by This is Futbol, many fans around N17 would be absolutely delighted to see him move on this month, so they will surely be buzzing by Ornstein’s recent claim.

It may happen “late”, but Alli will surely be at a new club come February 1st.
