Atlético-BA: Diego; Edcarlos, Iran, Bremer e Raldinei; Azevedo, Leandro Sobral, Danilo e Gabriel Estevez; João Neto e Peixoto.

The Big Bash League’s marquee player Shane Warne will miss the Melbourne Stars clash with the Adelaide Strikers after travelling to the UK for Christmas. The Stars sent a press release late on Christmas Eve saying that their captain had “pre-existing commitments in the United Kingdom” and would miss the match scheduled for Thursday December 27.Warne made no secret of his location announcing on twitter: “Am spending my first Christmas away from Melbourne in 43 years I was hoping for a white Christmas in the UK & build snowmen too – sob !!! X”.It has been widely reported that part of Warne’s contract to play in the Big Bash League has been funded directly by Cricket Australia. Neither CA nor the South Australian Cricket Association has commented on Warne missing the match in Adelaide where a large crowd is expected.Former Stars captain Cameron White will take the reigns for the important clash with the Strikers, in which either side could all but sure up a semi-final berth.”It was something that was pre-arranged I think,” White said about Warne’s absence.”It is something that the team always knew was going to happen. He’s actually bowling quite well at the moment. But the team is very comfortable with the situation.”The two teams enter the match in fantastic form. The Strikers thumped the Sixers by nine wickets in Adelaide last Sunday to notch their third win of the tournament. Their attack featured three spinners in Johan Botha, Cameron Boyce and Brad Young, as well as the express pace of Shaun Tait. The Stars have their own firebrand, the form bowler of the tournament Lasith Malinga. But in Warne’s absence the spin duties will be left to the part-timers of White, David Hussey, and Glenn Maxwell, unless they select the inexperienced left-arm orthodox bowler Clive Rose. The Stars will get Luke Wright back from international duties with England.Shane Warne is scheduled to return for the Stars match with the Brisbane Heat on January 3.

Australia's intimidation tactics 'humorous' – Amla

In the aftermath of the Brisbane Test, Hashim Amla made light of the Australian attitude of aggression, calling it “quite humorous,” and brushed aside any suggestion of being intimidated. Michael Clarke’s men brought out their mean side on the final afternoon as they went in search of nine South African wickets in two and half sessions and managed to finish with five.In the most intense passage of play of an otherwise slow Test, Australia’s attack threw everything at the South African top order after Clarke declared 115 runs ahead. In addition to short balls and movement off the seam they also had a lot to say – particularly to Graeme Smith and Amla.Amla played on against James Pattinson but was not out because the fast bowler had overstepped – the fourth instance of a no-ball wicket in the match. Later in his innings, Peter Siddle thought he had Amla caught behind. A desperate appeal followed with help from David Warner at short midwicket but Amla said he was certain he had not made contact.James Pattinson launched a verbal tirade on Graeme Smith on the final day•Getty Images

“I actually found it quite humorous. Obviously the guys were a bit pumped up thinking I had nicked the ball. I guess it is a bit funny when guys get emotional when there is no real need to,” Amla said. “But it’s part of the game. I found it quite funny and just enjoyed the moment. It was a nice patch of play for cricket.” Amla was out shortly after when he handed Michael Hussey a catch at short cover.Smith was also dismissed following a period of high drama. Post-lunch, Pattinson launched a verbal tirade on Smith for pulling away when a bird entered his line of sight when Pattinson was in his delivery stride. Smith waved him away and then faced a series of bouncers before edging a fuller ball to gully. However, the South African captain also gave no credence to Australia’s way with words. “There was a lot of noise out there but I couldn’t really make out what was being said,” Smith said, dismissively. “It was the same as any other game.”Tensions ran high despite the match petering out to a draw. Michael Clarke would have wanted exactly that as he asked his bowlers to try and cause an almighty collapse and he was pleased with the outcome. “I think the aggression and the intent is the way we play our best cricket and I certainly don’t want to stop that,” he said. “But we understand there’s a line and you can go to the line but you can’t overstep it.”Australia’s oral traditions in the game have long been the source of a South African undoing. To this day Daryll Cullinan refuses to talk about his experiences in facing Shane Warne and the legend of Steve Waugh telling Herschelle Gibbs he had “dropped the World Cup,” after he spilt a catch in the 1999 World Cup lives on despite it being fiction. While the art of sledging is nothing new, the tactics employed in the Brisbane Test may sound suspiciously close to the ‘dossier’ which made headlines in the lead up. Both coach Mickey Arthur and Clarke denied the existence of the document and said some of the information contained in it was never discussed by the team.Although they did not go into the specifics, it was thought that one of those would be to sledge Amla. It was a surprising strategy because Amla is known for his calm demeanor and difficult to rough up. It was also seen as fairly defeatist and made it seem as though Australia had no other ideas to stop Amla from scoring. In the first innings, that may have been true. Despite nervous strokes and a number of edges, Amla notched up another Test ton. As Australia went for the win, though, they bowled far tighter lines, had better control over their length and even a player of Amla’s quality struggled. While Clarke believes that achievement will give Australia momentum and the mental edge going into Adelaide, Smith was not convinced. “I think a draw was a reflection of both teams.”Amla was also not ready to heap praise on Australia’s bowling determination and said that while their attack is very good, “in my opinion, the South African attack is the best in the world.” He also used it as an opportunity to punt his own part-time offspin as he followed up with a joke on what to expect in the second Test. “I was really disappointed when Graeme took me out of the attack after just two overs but he said he is resting me for the next Test.”

Taylor ready for World T20 precursor

New Zealand will enter this weekend’s Twenty20 series against West Indies in Florida with a number of questions. How to impress an American audience won’t be one of them. Arguably New Zealand’s biggest drawcard, Brendon McCullum, is being rested. James Franklin, who has the side’s highest strike-rate in the past year, is playing county cricket. Jesse Ryder is out of the picture indefinitely. Now consider some of the names in the squad. Dean Brownlie. Daniel Flynn. Kane Williamson. They are all fine batsmen, but are far from typical Twenty20 big-hitters. But New Zealand’s captain, Ross Taylor, isn’t worried. For him, these two matches are a chance to put West Indies on the back foot at the start of a long tour. They also provide an important opportunity to assess players ahead of the ICC World Twenty20.That tournament will be played in September in Sri Lanka, where the conditions are expected to be slow and spin-friendly. The same could be said of Lauderhill this weekend. Taylor believes Twenty20 need not be all about clearing the fence, and by choosing a balanced batting line-up New Zealand would give themselves their best chance of clicking ahead of the World T20. Impressing the American crowds, he hopes, will come naturally.”I’d hope to think that we play a good brand of cricket anyway,” Taylor said ahead of the T20 series. “I don’t think it’s going out there and trying to play any differently or showcase it just because it’s an American audience. First and foremost we’ve got to win. But I’d hope to say that we play a good brand of cricket anyway and we don’t need to worry about that.”Playing spin is going to be crucial, not only here in America and in the West Indies, but in the subcontinent. With it being in Sri Lanka and our first two games being against Pakistan and Bangladesh, playing spinners is going to be key. Those players, Williamson and Brownlie, are very good players of spin. Playing Twenty20 is not always about hitting boundaries. It’s about rotating the strike. If necessary they can hit the big ball, but they can rotate it around as well.”There won’t be any doubt about the way their opponents will play. A West Indies squad boasting Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith and Darren Sammy cannot help but play aggressive cricket. It is that combination of batsmen, along with a versatile bowling group including the spinner Sunil Narine, who was the Player of the Series in the IPL this year, that prompted Shane Watson to declare this week that West Indies would be the team to beat at the World T20.That might have been an unexpected comment, given West Indies sit ninth on the ICC’s T20 rankings. Taylor, captain of the fourth-ranked New Zealand, did not go quite as far Watson in singling out one side, but did agree that with Gayle back in their line-up West Indies would be a serious threat at the world tournament.”I think they will go in as one of the favourites,” Taylor said. “Twenty20 is a game, more so than one-day and Test matches, where individuals can win games by themselves. They’ve got the likes of Gayle, Bravo, Pollard and Smith who can all take the game away from you and win it single-handedly. They are a dangerous side when it comes to that. I’m expecting a very dynamic team, but we’re more trying to worry about ourselves.”First and foremost, that means settling on a line-up. McCullum and Franklin will be certain starters for the World T20, as will Daniel Vettori, who has come out of T20 international retirement. But plenty of questions remain, not least among the bowling group. Ronnie Hira has played five T20s for his country without locking down a spot, while Andrew Ellis will also be desperate to prove he can add all-round value to the team.”We haven’t settled on a line-up,” Taylor said. “The 15 that are here are all pushing for spots and hopefully that competition will bring out the best in different individuals and come a couple of months’ time when we choose our line-up for the first match of that World Cup we have the balance and all our players are set and hopefully raring to go.”You’ve got Vettori, McCullum and Franklin who will obviously jump straight back into the Twenty20 side. There’s obviously going to be certainties, a few players. But our bowling line-up is far from certain. We’ve got a lot of spinners as well as allrounders in our side, and we’ve got the No.1 batsman in the world in Twenty20 cricket in Martin Guptill in our side. So there are a couple of spots up for grabs.”New Zealand have this weekend’s games and then two more T20s, against India, before the world tournament. That’s only 80 overs of cricket. No wonder impressing the Americans is the last thing on Taylor’s mind.
