Manchester United’s Scott McTominay takes to Instagram after heated moment with Harry Kane

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United’s pre-season friendly with Tottenham Hotspur ended up, perhaps predictably, being a ferocious content.

What was supposed to be just an exhibition match between two teams in good spirits and a relaxed atmosphere took a quick turn when Moussa Sissoko seemingly stamped on the Red Devils’ new signing, Daniel James.

Things got heated in a second and before anyone could do anything to stop it, players were in each other’s faces, with Harry Kane leading the line against Andreas Pereira.

Pretty soon, a big bust-up was in place, and the referee, as well as the other players, had to separate the raging duo.

Scott McTominay was at the heart of it, standing between the two hot-headed players who seemingly forgot the meaning of a friendly match.

In the aftermath of the game, the United academy product took to

But not all was bleak and gloomy as Angel Gomes scored his first senior goal for the team and McTominay was quick to congratulate him as well.

Both Gomes and Pereira replied to the snap, the former saying his thanks to his teammate and the latter commenting on the whole situation with a series of emojis, implying that all seems to be well.

Liverpool must avoid risk of missing out on back-up left-back

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Speaking after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Bradford in pre-season, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the club have not ruled out signing a potential back-up left-back this summer.

What’s the word?

Following the departure of Spain international Alberto Moreno on a free transfer, reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Reds could be targeting a move to sign a replacement left-back.

The Anfield side’s only senior option for the position at the moment remains Andy Robertson, and in the club’s opening two pre-season games, Klopp has handed chances to academy stars Adam Lewis and Yasser Larouci.

Now, speaking after the Bradford clash, the German admitted a new arrival could be possible. He said: “We will see. What can I say? I said already, we have to think about everything and in the end maybe we do nothing, but we will see.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

“Of course, as you can imagine, we will have a look at all the things around us. Of course we have lost a left-back and today you saw two pretty young ones, James [Milner] has played it and all that stuff. As I said, we will see.”

An unnecessary risk

In a truly stellar campaign last season, Robertson underlined his growing credentials as being one of the best left-backs in the league. The Scotland international was an unbelievable presence going forward, registering a whopping 13 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.

But, there was an element of luck to the Reds’ success. The 25-year-old’s virtually injury-free campaign meant Klopp could turn to the defender week-in and week-out and never really have to turn towards the defensively suspect Moreno. But with the Spaniard’s exit, Liverpool are entering dangerous territory by not signing a proven back-up.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s success has perhaps given Klopp more ammunition to believe that handing out chances to his academy players might bear rich rewards. But if Robertson were to get injured, trusting inexperienced teenagers like Lewis and Larouci as they look to contend both domestically and in Europe would be tantamount to gross negligence.

The Reds must simply cover all bases, and avoid relying on Robertson too much. Indeed, seeing the Scot undergo surgery on his hand in the past week should act as a warning sign to Klopp; fail to heed it, and the Reds could be ruing their decision come the end of next season.

[ad_pod ]

Celtic kicked off their 2019/20 season in positive fashion on Tuesday night, overcoming Bosnian champions FK Sarajevo 3-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifying tie.

Despite conceding the first goal of the match, Neil Lennon’s side rallied and were level by the interval thanks to a wonderful long-range effort from winger Mikey Johnston.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

Odsonne Edouard and Scott Sinclair then added goals in the second half to give the team a commanding lead ahead of the second leg at Celtic Park next Wednesday.

Johnston was given the nod at left wing by Lennon and didn’t disappoint with his performance, providing a constant attacking outlet as well as the goal before being substituted off due to injury.

The 20-year-old is progressing well under the new manager, starting five matches and scoring three goals since Lennon’s arrival, even considered to be important enough to the team to start the Scottish Cup Final in May.

Celtic fans are beginning to get very excited about the potential he holds and what he can bring to the side this coming season, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts after his Tuesday display…

Transfer Focus: Martin Olsson could solve Steven Gerrard’s left-back problem

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are a potential destination for international defender Martin Olsson this summer, according to Swedish outlet Expressen.

What’s the story?

With Lee Wallace leaving the club, Borna Barisic not living up to expectations and Jon Flanagan not a viable natural choice at left-back, Rangers need to be on the hunt for players in that position this summer.

Martin Olsson is a free agent after his contract at English Championship side Swansea City expired at the end of last season and Expressen reckon Rangers are one of the clubs interested.

Check out what the Pl>ymaker FC squad got up to at the Football Blogging Awards in the video below…

With Fenerbahce and Nottingham Forest also linked with the player in the report, there could be competition for his signature.

Barisic problem

Steven Gerrard signed Barisic last season from Croatian top-flight side NK Osijek, but the defender has under-performed and had his fair share of fitness issues, failing to live up to his tag as one of the big signings of the summer.

Olsson has the quality and the top level experience to replace Barisic, or at least provide the kind of competition that Rangers need to maintain consistency across an entire season.

With 47 caps for Sweden and 197 career Premier League appearances, Olsson is clearly an operator capable of playing at Scottish Premiership level.

He had fitness problems of his own at Swansea last term that limited the amount of matches played but has a long history of playing 30+ games a season so those issues in Wales aren’t too much of a red flag.

Rangers should definitely be throwing their hat in the ring on this one.

Spurs playing dangerous game in pursuit of Ndombele

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur are running the risk of missing out on Tanguy Ndombele.

The supremely talented Lyon midfielder has long been linked with a move to the London club and a Daily Mirror report on Thursday claimed that Spurs were willing to break their transfer record to sign him.

However, in the same breath, the report also states that chairman Daniel Levy is not willing to pay his asking price of £71m. They are, nevertheless, said to be confident a deal can be agreed.

And yet one feels that they are playing a remarkably dangerous game.

Telefoot journalist Julien Maynard claims that both Manchester United and Juventus are also in talks with the midfielder and that no agreement has been reached with any suitor as of yet. PSG, naturally, have also communicated their interest, though no bid has been tabled.

The London Evening Standard, in a separate report, claim that Spurs “face a battle to convince” Ndombele, as he favours a move to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester City. Nevertheless, the club are again said to be “confident of reaching an agreement”.

This, though, is a once in a lifetime chance and it cannot be left to fate.

Ndombele is a generational talent, a genuinely world-class central midfielder who could be a game-changing acquisition for a club who have been forced to deal in cast-offs, youngsters and bargains for too long.

At this point in time, Spurs have the money to spend. They may have built a new stadium but they haven’t invested a penny into the playing squad since January 2018 and also have the benefit of the prize money from reaching the Champions League final.

There has been no greater time to invest; it is an old adage but to accumulate, one has to speculate.

Buying Ndombele is the definition of speculating and it feels as though Spurs are approaching a tipping point in their pursuit of the player.

If they leave it too long, a club with considerably greater pulling power could gazump them. Yes, Spurs reached the final, but very few players say no to Real or Barca.

This, then, is not the time for Levy to negotiate. Sometimes, he can feel like the Monty Python market trader, insisting that the buyer haggles despite offering to pay full price.

Now, though, is the time for him to merely slap the money on the table. If Lyon want £71m, he simply has to pay it.

Yes, it’s a massive fee, but Ndombele is good enough to be worth double it in four or five years. And that’s when he could move to a La Liga giant.

Now, though, Levy has to ensure he ends up in north London.

Leeds United losing Daniel James to Manchester United is a kick in the teeth

Look away now Leeds fans: Manchester United are apparently favourites to sign Swansea prodigy Daniel James

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have emerged as frontrunners to land Swansea and Wales prospect Daniel James, a man Leeds United vehemently chased in the previous transfer window.

The winger saw a deadline-day move collapse at the last in January when Swansea got cold, leaving Leeds United hanging out to dry.

He has since continued his form and any hopes of a return bid have been slashed by incoming interest from Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool, both of whom arguably possess greater pulling power (at least on paper) than Leeds – though we would question the sanity of anyone willing to go to Old Trafford at the moment.

It is no surprise that United have joined the party given James’ immense talents, as a versatile, pacey winger – he is the classic style of player the club have modelled their success on for years (until recently, of course).

With just one year left on his contract at the end of the season he is valued at around £10million.

Manchester United legend and current Wales manager Ryan Giggs said: ‘He’s a talent. When you’ve got that raw pace, you’re a threat at any level so as a winger, obviously for me playing as a winger, when I was younger, you then have to develop the other parts of your game which I feel he is doing.

‘He’s played up front as well which will help him because that gives you an appreciation of what you need to do.’

Given just how many injuries Leeds United have faced this season and the ineptitude of their current forwards, who often go missing, it would be a disaster if James linked up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer instead of Bielsa.

After the automatic promotion collapse to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, too, it’s not hard to imagine Whites fans thinking the end to this campaign couldn’t get much worse.

With Jack Harrison departing and young Jack Clarke not yet ready to take on a full season, though he is close, Leeds are desperately short of viable options on the wing. Manchester United, on the other hand, are not.

A bitter pill to swallow.

Manchester United face battle to keep Rashford from Barcelona

[ad_pod ]

Barcelona are interested in signing Marcus Rashford from Manchester United, according to Marca.

The Catalan side are said to be monitoring replacements for ageing forward Luis Suarez.

What’s the word?

The aforementioned report claims that Barca want to secure back-up to Suarez, who will turn 33 next year.

A move for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic has been shelved, however, and Barca are scouting other targets, with Rashford on a shortlist including Valencia’s Rodrigo Moreno and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.

It is not mentioned how much Barca would be willing to pay for the England international, though Transfermarkt value the 21-year-old at £72million.

Indeed, Rashford has been an explosive presence in United’s team since his first-team breakthrough, scoring 45 goals and laying on 26 assists in 163 outings.

He has also won 31 caps for England already and was a member of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

No price is good enough

Rashford is the undisputed jewel in United’s crown.

Some would argue that Paul Pogba is more valuable monetarily and that may well be true but in terms of his contribution and the adoration for him among fans, no other player comes anywhere close to Rashford.

It makes sense, then, that Barcelona are interested. Rashford is, after all, a gifted forward player, capable of playing anywhere across a front three, and versatility is an asset highly prized at the Camp Nou.

But there is simply no way that United could replace him.

Rashford has been at the club since he was seven, and will surely want to help his boyhood side return to the top of the Premier League table one day.

If that is to happen, United simply must ensure he stays for a few more years yet, and keeping him this summer now takes top priority over the future of the inconsistent Pogba.
