Haaland showed why Man Utd must sign him

A Erling Braut Haaland brace wasn’t enough to prevent Borussia Monchengladbach from leapfrogging Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga but Manchester United’s long-term transfer target delivered a masterclass on Friday night.

Haaland scored twice to help Dortmund take the lead but Gladbach hit back in style, capitalising on a dreadful defensive performance from the visitors to smash home four goals and leave Edin Terzic facing questions about his future.

The 20-year-old has now bagged four goals and an assist in just three Bundesliga games against the Foals.

Reports in recent months have revealed that Haaland finds himself on the Red Devils’ radar amid interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus.

Chelsea will be in the market for a new striker given their ongoing offensive struggles, whilst United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seeking to bolster his firepower, even after the arrival of Edinson Cavani last year.

With Haaland sharing the same agent as Paul Pogba, United could well use the Frenchman to swing a move in their favour.

Primarily a centre-forward, the Norwegian has burst onto the European scene over the past couple of years. Haaland has made 13 Bundesliga appearances so far this season and has 14 goals and two assists to show for his 13 starts, with Dortmund currently adrift of Champions League contention as they lie fifth in the table.

Having excelled for Dortmund, it’s no surprise he is currently averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.57, that being one of the best of all strikers in the German top flight, second only to a certain Bayern Munich striker by the name of Robert Lewandowski.

Against Gladbach last night, Haaland showed why he could be Solskjaer’s game-changer. One of his best traits is his ability to hold on to the ball and burst into the box.

While some strikers may look to rely on playmakers to create opportunities, Haaland tries his best to make things happen for Dortmund, as evident by his 0.8 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga this season. Averaging at least one dribble across all competitions per match suggests that on the whole he is more successful than it otherwise might appear.

Whilst he couldn’t complete a successful dribble from his solitary attempt, the €200m-rated (£178m) Norway international had more shots (3) than almost every player from either side apart from Jadon Sancho and also scored on two occasions, notching an impressive 66% conversion rate – a total contrast to Sancho, who failed to find the back of the net from three attempts.

His predatory instincts inside the box were there for all to see, proving that he is prepared to put the graft in to push forward, which is exactly why he would be a fine fit for the Red Devils.

Speaking to Bundesliga.com, Augsburg striker Alfred Finnbogason dubbed Haaland a “natural talent” – only Lewandowski has scored more goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Andros Townsend cost Palace vs Arsenal

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend proved costly against Arsenal as it ended all square at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.

Alexandre Lacazette came close to breaking the deadlock before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced a fine save from Vicente Guaita.

But Roy Hodgson’s side dug deep and held firm against Arsenal to secure a point at a ground where Chelsea and Newcastle have previously come unstuck.

Having endured a torrid night at Molineux last time out, where they lost 1-0 to Wolves after Adama Traore scored his first goal of the season, it looked like Hodgson’s side hadn’t shaken off the hangover from the FA Cup when Aubameyang evaded Townsend to cut inside from the left flank and fire off a shot on target.

While Tyrick Mitchell may receive a portion of the blame for the early lapse in concentration, it would be wrong to pin the blame solely on the 21-year-old, who otherwise enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular, performance on the left-hand side of the back four.

In fact, Mitchell received the joint fourth-highest SofaScore rating out of all his teammates, including midfielder James McArthur. Despite his diminutive stature, the 5 ft 7 in left-back was a colossal at the back for Hodgson’s side – he made one tackle, four clearances and four interceptions, which was more than he is currently averaging per game this season so far, meaning he was a level above his average work rate in terms of his defensive shift.

The same can’t be said for Townsend, who was also utterly wasteful in terms of his possession, as the right winger managed to lose control of the ball ten times despite taking 52 touches throughout the entire 90 minutes.

Indeed, the 29-year-old lost 12 out of his 16 duels overall (75%) on the right wing last night, and was dribbled past five times, which shows that he was run ragged by the likes of Aubameyang and Ainsley Maitland-Niles all evening, with the pair winning the same number of individual battles between them, as per SofaScore.

On top of that, Townsend took one shot off target to sum up his frustrations after he blasted a shot well over the bar inside the first ten minutes of the first half following a promising passage of play, so it’s perhaps hardly surprising he failed to find the back of the net for the 16th game in a row this season. He also only managed to produce one accurate long ball from four attempts, which just goes to show the kind of quality Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha had to work with on the night. It’s fair to say that he lacked any real ambition and looked fairly sloppy on the ball.

The former England international didn’t take too kindly to Arteta’s tackle whilst he also intervened to separate Zaha and David Luiz, but those were his only real contributions of note as he endured a night to forget at the Emirates.

SofaScore graded Townsend as the worst Palace player on the pitch with his 6.5 score and quite rightly, too, after his lack of genuine quality in the final third proved costly as the two sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.

The Independent’s Karl Matchett was left unimpressed by his performance and noted he was ‘a hard-running but peripheral figure.’

The £8.5m-rated right winger, who earns around £55,000-per-week at Selhurst Park, was largely ineffective against an Arsenal side who otherwise struggled to break down the well-drilled visitors. He failed to record a shot on target for the second time in as many games in all competitions this season, via SofaScore.

Had he decided against lashing a hopeful shot into the stands, the score line may have read very differently indeed, as he could have created a chance for either Benteke or Zaha instead.

West Brom: Sam Allardyce can land instant upgrade in West Ham colossus Issa Diop

It seems that a new central defender is high on the list of priorities for new West Brom boss Sam Allardyce in the upcoming transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun on Sunday (December 20th, page 65), the Baggies manager is eyeing a move to sign West Ham defender Issa Diop on loan in January.

It’s claimed that the Irons are open to shifting the Frenchman out on loan and could even sanction a sale should they receive a decent offer.

Big Sam is a big fan and could look to sign Diop, who cost the east Londoners £22m back in the summer of 2018. He is thought to also be on wages of around £67k-per-week, according to Spotrac.

Colossal upgrade

It is no wonder the 66-year-old is eyeing defensive reinforcements as his first port of call as Albion are among the Premier League’s leakiest teams.

Indeed, only Leeds United (30) have conceded more goals than West Brom (29). Both are near-enough still deploying their Championship XIs, so it is hardly a surprise.

The Baggies hierarchy sold Ahmed Hegazi behind the back of former manager Slaven Bilic, and aside from Branislav Ivanovic, who is getting on a bit at 36, Allardyce has been left with vastly inexperienced players.

Diop has played 69 times in the English top-flight and 85 times in Ligue 1, as per Transfermarkt, so he certainly seems a good option to fill the void. Even more so after the Hammers once valued him at £75m amid interest from Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho once dubbed him a “monster” capable of dominating duels after he nullified the threat of Paul Pogba two years ago and whilst his current valuation of £18m suggests things haven’t gone to plan, he has still performed at a decent enough level.

Paul Robinson also told Football Insider: “Diop’s proven this season that he’s reliable, strong, very very capable and he’s been a part of West Ham’s success. He is good enough for a top-four team.”

High praise indeed.

Last season, Diop averaged 5.1 clearances, 2.5 aerials won, 1.5 interceptions and 0.8 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

Albion’s current partnership of Semi Ajayi and Dara O’Shea barely have a fraction of the games played of the French colossus, and neither is managing more clearances per game this term either.

Diop would be an ideal upgrade from Luke Dowling and co next month.

Leeds: Radrizzani must move for free agent Danny Rose next summer

Kevin Phillips has tipped newly-promoted Leeds United to bring exiled Spurs left-back, Danny Rose, back to Elland Road.

The England international is approaching the final six months of his contract in north London and after slipping drastically down the pecking order, this summer will call time on his 13-year era with the Lilywhites.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for Rose who has only had two permanent clubs in his professional career.

He joined Spurs from Leeds back in 2007 and he now finds himself being shown the door by Daniel Levy.

The 30-year-old hasn’t made a single appearance for Tottenham this season and has been demoted to the reserve league, which is a huge slap in the face.

Why Leeds should sign Danny Rose

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips thinks that snapping up Rose next summer would be a “no brainer” for Andrea Radrizzani.

“I imagine Leeds would look at Danny Rose. It will not be about money for him at this stage,” the ex-striker said. “He will want to play football and I am sure he would love to play in a Marcelo Bielsa side. A specialised, experience left-back who is good on the ball. He could slot in quite nicely.”

Indeed, with things turning extremely sour down in London, Rose will likely take a wage cut in order to secure regular playing time. With no transfer fee to pay next year, it’s an extremely attractive bit of business for Leeds.

Bielsa is also struggling with an injury-stricken squad at the moment, with both Robin Koch and Diego Llorente on the sidelines.

This has forced Luke Ayling to cover the centre-back position, with Stuart Dallas moving to right-back. Whilst it’s a testament to these players’ versatility, it’s alarming that Leeds have such little depth when it comes to their defensive options.

Rose would be a huge boost in this department and would likely get regular minutes with Dallas now taking on a new midfield role.

Re-signing the 30-year-old dynamo in the summer should be an option that Radrizzani is already considering, as it would benefit all parties involved in the move.

Aston Villa looking to sell Suso signing Bjorn Engels

After arriving from Reims last summer in a £7m deal, it’s safe to say Bjorn Engels didn’t enjoy the greatest of debut campaigns at Aston Villa.

The Belgian was a permanent fixture in the starting line-up at Villa Park for the opening weeks of the Premier League last season, making 11 consecutive appearances.

Back-to-back defeats to both Manchester City and Liverpool then saw Engels finally drop out of the team, and since then, it’s been a case of ‘Where’s Bjorn?’.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece suggested back in January that Dean Smith’s preference for a traditional right-footer and left-footer as a centre-back pairing, and lack of trust in Engels in a back-three, saw the defender fall out of favour.

And then, at the start of the Premier League’s restart, Smith himself revealed that Engels was suffering from an Achilles issue. Now, it looks like he could be heading out of the exit door.

According to Belgian publication Walfoot, Anderlecht are interested in signing him in this transfer window, although they would want him on loan – something Villa are against as they are keen on a more permanent departure.

Reports last summer suggested that the £55k-a-week earning centre-back arrived on the back of being strongly recommended by the club’s former sporting director, Suso, and it speaks volumes of how his star has fallen at Villa that he is now facing a quick exit.

Despite Tyrone Mings revealing Engels is a “very cool” player to play alongside last year, Villa seem to have had enough with the Belgian.

Aston Villa fans react to links with Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson

Having survived relegation on the final day of the Premier League season, Aston Villa can look forward to another campaign in English football’s top-flight.

But after seeing last summer’s club-record signing in Wesley endure a disappointing debut campaign – he scored just six times across all competitions before his cruciate ligament injury – it’s no surprise Villa are being linked with a new striker.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Telegraph claim that with Bournemouth considering a deal for Scott Hogan, that could see Dean Smith’s side enter the race to sign the Cherries’ own striker, Callum Wilson.

The England international – earning £60k-per-week at the Vitality Stadium – scored eight times in 35 Premier League games last season for the relegated Cherries, and has also been linked with a move to Tottenham.

And after hearing about their potential interest in Wilson, Villa fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Villa fans even name-checked Brentford forward Ollie Watkins as an option they would prefer over Wilson.

One supporter meanwhile claimed Wilson is “useless”, and pointed to his injury record with Bournemouth – he has missed 63 total games in the past five years according to Transfermarkt, including two cruciate ligament ruptures.

Judging by their reactions, Villa fans would be quite split on seeing Wilson arrive at the club this summer.

The striker is an experienced and proven Premier League option over these past few seasons, and at 28, is arguably in the peak years of his career too.

Given Bournemouth’s relegation, Villa may not even have to spend a shed-load of money to sign him either.
