Rangers: Kamara let GvB down vs Motherwell

Rangers defeated Motherwell 3-1 in what could be a crucial win as the race for the Scottish Premiership title continues into the final month.

Rangers started brightly and opened the scoring via an own goal from Motherwell keeper Liam Kelly, cruelly denying Scott Wright the opener.

The game was changed massively when Leon Balogun was sent off following a clumsy challenge and the momentum briefly swung in the home side’s favour as Glen Kamara lost the ball when he should have made a simple clearance which gave the Steelmen an opportunity to score, which Graham Alexander’s side duly took.

The Ibrox side came out after the break determined to prolong the title race and goals from Wright and James Tavernier gave the away side a win that looked unlikely after 45 minutes.

The majority of Gers players got pass marks, but Kamara was poor yet again under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The midfielder lost possession eight times during the tie, with one such occasion allowing Motherwell to score, and he looked like a passenger during his 68-minute spell.

In possession, Kamara only had 46 touches, made one long pass, and failed to complete any dribbles, showing his somewhat conservative nature.

With only one tackle and one interception, he was miles off it from a defensive point of view and the 26-year-old would have been expected to take up added responsibility following Balogun’s dismissal – with his returns seeing him earn a disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.6.

It was a slack performance from Kamara, with many believing that this could be his last season at the Ibrox side.

The club signed him in January 2019 for a measly fee of £45k from Dundee and has been a key member of the squad which won the league title last season.

This campaign has been markedly different, however, and with former boss Steven Gerrard linked with the midfielder, it may be time for Rangers to cut ties in the summer.

Crystal Palace eye Ronnie Edwards

Crystal Palace are trying to sign Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards, according to The Daily Mail’s Joe Bernstein.

The lowdown

Edwards is a 19-year-old centre-back who’s enjoyed a breakthrough season with Peterborough.

Having only made five appearances in 2020/21, he’s now a regular at London Road, with 10 starts in the last 11 league matches.

The Englishman still has more than three years to run on his contract with The Posh and is reportedly valued at £15million.

That would make him Peterborough’s record departure, ahead of the likes of Britt Assombalonga (£6.2million), Ivan Toney (£5million) and Dwight Gayle (£4.8million).

Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen have established themselves as the first-choice centre-back pairing at the club this season following their summer arrivals, playing 36 and 32 games respectively.

The latest

Vieira sees the prospective signing of Edwards as part of the next stage of the rebuild at Selhurst Park.

They envision him as a ‘big part of their future’, along with 21-year-old Guehi and 25-year-old Andersen.

Palace are to set to battle his fellow admirers Tottenham Hotspur, but their hope is that Vieira’s ‘record in giving young players a chance’ appeals to Edwards.

The verdict

Palace remain one of the older sides in the Premier League when it comes to average age. At an average age of 26.9, they rank 15th in the Premier League, some way short of Arsenal’s benchmark (24.3).

However, this is a marked improvement from last season, when they sat at the bottom of this particular table under Roy Hodgson on 28.8.

Vieira, then, looked to reenergise his team with young talent, and if this report is anything to go by, he’ll be continuing those efforts this summer.

Edwards would be another exciting addition. Peterborough chairman Barry Fry has dubbed him a ‘Rolls Royce’ and is certain he’ll enjoy an ‘outstanding’ career, while Sir Alex Ferguson has apparently urged Manchester United to sign him.

In other news, Palace have also been linked with this Brentford star.

Teenage Roy stuns Kent with century

ScorecardSurrey’s teenage batsman Jason Roy hit the first Twenty20 hundred by a Lions batsman since the short-form format started eight seasons ago to ease his side to a 38-run win over lacklustre Kent.In a one-sided Friends Provident t20 derby at Beckenham, Surrey cantered to 201 for four – one more than they posted at the Oval against Hampshire 24 hours earlier – courtesy of an unbeaten 101 by 19-year-old Roy. A tight bowling display coupled with athletic fielding then restricted the hosts to 183 for eight, allowing Surrey to rack-up their fifth win from nine outings, while inflicting a sixth defeat in eight for the troubled Spitfires.Batting first having won the toss, resurgent Surrey lost their skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown for six in the third over when he miscued a straight drive into the hands of mid-wicket. Thereafter Roy and Steven Davies laid solid foundations for the visitors with a second-wicket stand worth 78 in nine overs. Davies, backing away to leg to make room for his expansive drives over the off-side field, hit 42 from 28 balls with five fours and a six.The left-hander’s stay ended when he chipped to deep mid-wicket. Younus Khan was next man out for eight when he drove straight to long-off to bring together Roy and the man they nickname ‘Roy’, Australian Andrew Symonds, for a sublime fourth-wicket stand of 63 in five overs.Though muscular and hard-hitting himself, there were times when former Kent all-rounder Symonds could only watch and admire the clean hitting of former Whitgift School prodigy, Roy. Hitting with immense power off front and back foot, he cleared the ropes five times and plundered 11 boundaries to coast to a 56-ball hundred in only his third Twenty20 game and the sixth limited-overs game of his career.Though Symonds skied a return catch to Matt Coles to go for 31from only 16 balls, Roy saw it through to the final over to ink his name into the Surrey record books. Kent’s response started dismally when both Rob Key and Geraint Jones nicked loose drives to keeper Davies, Chris Tremlett accounting for both men.Darren Stevens, Kent’s form player so far this term, reached seven before he thumped a back-foot force into the hands of Chris Schofield in the covers. Azhar Mahmood then fell for 34, skying to the same fielder as Symonds moved toward a haul of five for 18 against his former side.Though Martin van Jaarsveld moved to a swift half-century – and ultimately to 82 from 49 balls – the asking rate soared beyond 18 moving into the final five overs. Unsurprisingly that target proved well beyond the compass of the misfiring Spitfires.

Bollinger aims for final flourish

Doug Bollinger has admitted that it would be “devastating” to concede a one-day series whitewash to England, but is confident Australia can regain some pride in the final two matches after their late surge at Old Trafford nearly pulled off a stunning comeback.England lost six for 18 in 38 balls as a comfortable chase turned into a nerve-jangling conclusion before Tim Bresnan edged James Hopes to seal victory and give the hosts an unassailable lead in the series.Bollinger had been a major factor in the late jitters as he removed Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad in his last over with reverse swing, while the recalled Shaun Tait and legspinner Steven Smith also made England sweat. However, for a large part of the match Australia had been a distant second best once the opening stand of 75 between Shane Watson and Tim Paine was broken, leaving the visitors in the almost unknown position of having to save face at The Oval and Lord’s this week.”We’d love to stop them, 5-0 would be devastating,” said Bollinger.”But we’ve just got to go out there and do everything properly and hopefully win the next two; 3-2 would still be disappointing but it would be two good wins.”It isn’t the start we wanted being 3-0 down but there isn’t much we can do. Everyone went out and played their guts off and sometimes it just doesn’t work out. We can’t whinge about it, we just have to try and finish well in these two one-dayers before the T20s and Tests against Pakistan.”Bollinger, though, conceded that England have made huge strides with their one-day game since the 6-1 thrashing by Australia last year and will be a tough side to compete with after the confidence gained from recent limited-overs success.”They’ve come on massively, especially with winning the Twenty20 they are sky high at the moment,” he said. “Everyone in their team has got their game together. We have to lift 10-15 percent and we are capable of doing that. Nobody likes a winning team unless it’s your own but we’ll be alright.”Despite Australia’s problems in the series, Bollinger has continued his impressive form of the last nine months which as seen him become the team’s premier strike bowler. The partnership with Tait, who was limited to two-over spells by Ricky Ponting in his first ODI since February 2009, certainly gave the attack an added dimension after it had looked pedestrian in the opening two encounters.”It was good to drag them back a bit in those last 10 overs and that means everything is starting to come together,” said Bollinger.”Hopefully we can build on that. We’ve been very successful in the last few years and a couple of losses probably isn’t that bad even though nobody likes to lose.”

Victoria on top after dealing with Broad obstacle

In the most important game of the season the Bushrangers’ attack clicked again, but Ryan Broad refused to give in and his 82 dragged the Bulls to 6 for 199

Peter English18-Mar-2010Queensland 6 for 199 (Broad 82) trail Victoria 305 (Wade 96, Swan 3-65) by 106 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRyan Broad delivered a gritty 82 that kept Queensland afloat at the MCG•Getty ImagesBowling has been a strength for Victoria throughout the season and making runs has been Queensland’s biggest worry. In the most important game of the season the Bushrangers’ attack clicked again, but Ryan Broad refused to give in and his 82 dragged the Bulls to 6 for 199 in reply to 305.The final started in a flurry of action but the second day was a grind and nothing came easily. Victoria are used to this sort of game and at stumps the hosts held the advantage thanks to the early work of Damien Wright, Darren Pattinson and Andrew McDonald. Throw in John Hastings, who was unlucky to miss a wicket, and the legspinner Bryce McGain, who removed Broad and Chris Hartley, and it is a formidable attack. This is a new-ball wicket for the bowlers and once the ball softens the batsmen can feel more comfortable, although it doesn’t mean runs will come freely. To survive in these conditions they need to be unflappable, focussed and lucky. Broad was all of those as he delivered an innings that was as important as Matthew Wade’s 96 on the opening day.Appeals often echoed around the MCG but Broad didn’t get flustered and he hung around for 206 balls to pick up the boundaries when the bowlers lapsed. He played and missed a lot, but will remember the handful of nice drives for four, including a crisp straight one off McDonald in the middle session. There were also thick edges and many moments of discomfort in an old-fashioned innings that was just what Queensland needed. When he got to his half-century with a late cut off Hastings he barely raised his bat, knowing there was so much more to do. He stayed until 25 minutes before stumps when he missed a drifting ball from McGain that bowled him.In the opening session Broad watched Wade Townsend lose his bails to a Pattinson inswinger and Lee Carseldine depart to an edge that left the hosts at 2 for 14. The visitors had been desperate for something more solid at the start of their reply after being forced to wait more than half an hour to grab Victoria’s final wicket, which came with Townsend’s athletic take of Pattinson at square leg.Chris Lynn, the 19-year-old, contributed a useful 40 in partnership with Broad before he was the first of McDonald’s two successes, lbw to one coming back in and heading for leg stump. While most of the batsmen were in defensive mode, James Hopes (17) wanted to attack and his search for a fifth boundary ended in McDonald’s second and a catch for David Hussey at second slip.At 4 for 93 Victoria attempted to move in, but Broad was joined by Hartley and the stubborn duo put on an important 65 at a touch more than two an over. The Victorians groaned regularly at missed opportunities or rejected appeals and it took a fuller ball from McGain to take care of Hartley, who missed an attempted sweep. As McGain, who had 2 for 29, punched the air Hartley walked off with 24 off 95 balls, passing his captain on the way. Chris Simpson was still there at stumps on 15 while Ben Cutting had 1.Victoria’s bowlers will feel they deserved more wickets and they are right. Wright (1 for 32 off 17) and Pattinson were impressive and Hastings has a strange ability to deliver balls that manage to avoid the wickets by millimetres after beating the batsmen. McDonald’s stump-to-stump line makes him so difficult on this surface and he is cable of removing tail-enders in a hurry. However, the new ball on the third morning is the best chance of a quick close to the innings and a healthy lead for the hosts.

Bangladesh's Peter Pan

Cricinfo presents the plays of the day from the first day of the second Test between Bangladesh and India in Mirpur

Sriram Veera in Mirpur24-Jan-2010

It’s in Mirpur that Ishant Sharma has found some solace in troubled times•Associated Press

The boy who refuses to grow up
The Mohammad Ashraful soap opera continued with yet another typical episode today: A fleeting glimpse of something memorable before the inevitable brain freeze. No one else in world cricket today does that more consistently than him. He punched, flicked and even whipped a delivery from the off stump past a startled mid-on before he combusted against Pragyan Ojha with a needless charge. Ashraful, it seems, is a boy who refuses to grow up. He still is a crowd favourite, though. A young nation is entitled to its sporting biases.Guess who’s back?
It was here in Bangladesh that Ishant Sharma made his Test debut and was tonked by Ashraful. It’s here now, though, that he has found some solace in troubled times. Both Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar have already pointed out that this experience will have tremendously improved his confidence. Today he again bowled well and was helped by the batsmen and even by the umpire. Billy Bowden upheld an appeal for a catch behind the wicket though it appeared that the ball touched Imrul Kayes’ thigh pad. Ishant then straightened one to remove Raqibul Hasan and moved one in to trap Mushfiqur Rahim. He hasn’t returned to his best yet, but it appears that he has spotted the path after threatening to get lost in the woods. The gambit
Mahmudullah, who led another fine rearguard with the tail, did well to farm the strike but there was one moment of confusion. It was the third ball and No. 10 Shafiul Islam tapped an Ojha delivery past square leg. Harbhajan Singh, at backward square leg, just jogged, teasing Mahmudullah to take the second run which would bring Shafiul back on strike. Mahmudullah hesitated for quite a while before he decided to cross over for the second. The next ball Ojha struck Shafiul on the pad in front of the stumps and Harbhajan’s tease could have almost worked but Bowden turned down the good shout.O captain, my captain
It was short and wide and perhaps, that’s why he went for it but he only could edge it behind. They would say that it wasn’t a captain’s shot but your heart went out for him. He has been Bangladesh’s Daniel Vettori – he has to bat, he has to bowl, take catches and captain his side to greater things. The cross is perhaps too heavy for him to carry. In Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim, he has men who have started to rally around him and form the core of the side but he needs more support.Almost out of jail but…
Mahmudullah was on 96 when he cut Ojha towards Sehwag at backward point and got into a yes-no situation with his partner Rubel Hossain. Both batsmen were nearly at Mahmudullah’s end before Rubel retreated. Meanwhile, Sehwag’s throw came in but Ojha back-pedalled too far back behind the stumps and then missed hitting them as well. Mahmudullah escaped, or so one thought. However, in the next over, Rubel kept out the first four deliveries but was cleaned up by an offbreak from Harbhajan Singh. M Vijay, who himself has come close but not experienced what it feels to score a Test ton, ran up to congratulate Mahmudullah before Harbhajan too joined in. It wouldn’t have made up for the missed opportunity though, and Mahmudullah retreated ever so slowly back to the hut.

Rauf takes four as tourists dominate

ScorecardThe Pakistanis began their tour on an encouraging note with their seamers finding form on the opening day against a New Zealand Invitation XI in Queenstown. Abdur Rauf took a four-wicket haul as the hosts were bowled out for 234, thanks largely to wicketkeeper Reece Young’s opportunitistic 75 while Test hopefuls James Franklin and Daniel Flynn fell short of their half-centuries.None of the four Pakistan bowlers in action made the trip to the UAE for the limited-overs series yet all contributed to the wickets column today. Rauf, the right-arm seamer who toured Sri Lanka earlier this year, got the first breakthrough in the fourth over, getting rid of Craig Cumming. Danish Kaneria, the legspinner, took two wickets in quick succession to reduce the hosts to 60 for 4 before Flynn and Franklin began the recovery. They added 52 for the fourth wicket before Rauf returned to claim Flynn for 49. Franklin fell seven short of his half-century when he was caught by Imran Farhat – back in national colours after cutting his links with the ICL – off Yasir Arafat.Young led the second phase of the hosts’ recovery, shepherding the lower order, after they were reduced to 151 for 7. His 75 came off 104 balls with seven fours and a six. He was the last man out when he fell to Rauf, who finished with figures of 4 for 43. Mohammad Asif began his tour with figures of 2 for 60, while Kaneria and Arafat also picked up two each.Pakistan lost Khurram Manzoor early and were 14 for 1 at stumps.
