Eleven doughty protagonists to champion the minority

For the first time in India an intriguing contest between left andright-handers gets underway in the Timex Challenge at the WankhedeStadium on Sunday. The teams appear to be closely matched but theleft-handers are a trifle top-heavy with batsmen. With just threebowlers and no specialist keeper there are definite chinks in theirarmour. One wonders why Delhi tearaway Ashish Nehra wasn’t invited toshare the new ball with Zaheer Khan. But then again one-day cricket, and especially a festival game of this nature, is unabashedly abatsman’s game.Left-handers are a hopeless minority, albeit a rather distinguishedone, in the game but in recent years their numbers have been creepingup steadily. There is something to be said for the grace and eleganceof left-handers, especially when they play the drive, and JackFingleton once floated the theory that many left-handers are actuallystronger in their right hand which is the top or guiding hand, andhence the rudder, when it comes to the drive. The classing of lefthanders is a difficult proposition since many of them do only certainskills with their left hand and others with the right. In Indiancricket left-handed bowlers are fairly common (both spinners and to alesser extent medium pacers) but left-handed batsmen have been at apremium. It is only lately that this historical imbalance is beingrighted. The first Indian lefthander was PE Palia who played in the country’sinaugural Test against England at Lord’s in 1932. Palia was primarilya middle order batsman who was also a left arm orthodox spinner, aftera fashion. But the honour of being India’s first specialist left armbowler went to Palia’s fellow Parsi, RJD Jamshedji at Bombay in1933/34. Indeed Jamshedji was India’s first specialist slow bowler, right or left. The bowlers poured forth steadily since, from VinooMankad downwards, but the batsmen dried up to a trickle. The longesthiatus was from 1978/79, when Surinder Amarnath played his last Testagainst Pakistan in Karachi, until 1987/88 when Woorkheri Ramandebuted against West Indies. If one could go back into time and pick an all time Indian eleven oflefthanders, what would it look like? It’s not easy to find eleven menwho both batted and bowled left handed, so the rules will be amendedto seek players who performed their core skill with the left hand. Here again, a difficulty arises about Vinoo Mankad who bowled lefthanded and batted right: which did he do better? Rather than debatethat ticklish point, the simpler option is to disqualify him.Saurav Ganguly who already lays claim, at 28 years of age, to beingIndia’s greatest lefthander ever, can be pencilled in right away atNo.1. Finding his partner is also not too complicated. Indeed, incredible as it may seem, just three lefthanders have opened thebatting for India in Test cricket: Nari Contractor, Woorkheri Ramanand Sadagopan Ramesh. Contractor made his debut at No.7 butleapfrogged to the opener’s spot in his very next game. An obduratebatsman who offered a reassuring presence upfront, he will lend acalming influence to the host of strokemakers to follow.Vinod Kambli follows at No.3. The dream start to his Test career (hebecame the fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs) soured as he wrestledwith the twin foibles of suspect technique and temperament. Droppedfor the England tour of 1996 on patently non-cricketing grounds,Kambli never seemed to recover from the resulting dent to hisconfidence. After several failed comebacks, he remains one of thebiggest enigmas in Indian cricket.Next in line is Ajit Wadekar. Leader of sides that won back-to-backseries in West Indies and England in 1971, his claim to being skipperis unrivalled. He had the frustrating inability to convert his fiftiesinto three figures, making just a solitary Test century in Wellington.Salim Durani, that ‘wayward genius’, is a cinch as the first allrounder in the team at No.5. As a crowd puller, he was perhapsunsurpassed and his uncanny knack of offering the spectators a six ondemand was legendary. His slow left arm stuff was perhaps underratedbut it was Durrani who delivered the crucial break for India in thePort of Spain Test of 1971 by dismissing Lloyd and Sobers in one over.Another surprising statistic is India’s inability to produce a singleleft-handed wicket keeper in its Test history. The shortage of such aspecies necessitates the selection of a nonspecialist keeper. GulMahomed who kept wickets in three tour games on the 1946 tour ofEngland deputising for DD Hindlekar is probably best suited to fit thebill. Besides being a pugnacious batsman – he had a half share in theworld partnership record of 577 with Vijay Hazare – Gul also displayedquicksilver reflexes in the field, which would doubtless serve in goodstead behind the wickets too.Following in his footsteps, I propose AG Ram Singh, perhaps the finestplayer never to don the flannels for India in an official Test. Itstill remains a mystery how he missed out on the 1936 tour of Englandafter a stellar role in the first two editions in the Ranji Trophy. Adangerous customer with both bat and ball, Ram Singh is succeeded by athird spinning all-rounder in Bapu Nadkarni. The meanest bowler of histime and perhaps of all time – Gary Sobers said he was the only bowlerhe ever saw who sprinted down the wicket to prevent a single after hisdelivery stride – Nadkarni was also good enough to strike one Testcentury. As for left arm seamers, India have had a fair share of them beginningwith Mumbai policeman Ghulam Mustafa Guard in 1958/59, down to ZaheerKhan. The two best were inarguably Rusi Surti and Karsan Ghavri, bothhandy batsmen to boot, the latter having the additional asset ofbowling left arm spin when required. With three left arm spinnersalready in the basket, the team is completed by a fourth, Bishen Bedithe only member of the XI to bat right handed; also the only playerwith minimal batting pretensions. The twelfth man could be EknathSolkar, one of the finest close-in catchers who played for India. Hisprehensile hands grabbed 53 catches in 27 Tests, averaging almost twoper match, one of the highest proportions in Test history. That then is the XI: Saurav Ganguly, Nari Contractor, Vinod Kambli,Ajit Wadekar (captain), Salim Durrani, Gul Mahomed (wicket keeper), AGRam Singh, Bapu Nadkarni, Rusi Surti, Karsan Ghavri and Bishen Bedi.12th man: Eknath Solkar.

West Ham enter advanced talks for Kral

According to a report by Football Insider, West Ham and GSB are ‘willing to pay £20million-plus’ for powerhouse midfielder Alex Kral as they enter advanced talks for his signing.

The Lowdown: West Ham and Kral…

Kral is said to be heavily on the Hammers radar, with club insider ExWHUemployee recently saying that the club hope to get a deal for him done before the European Championships start (West Ham Way Podcast).

Before that, Sky Sports also claimed that the Hammers have held discussions with his representatives alongside four other Premier League sides.

If the club can complete an agreement for Kral, he will become another member of West Ham’s contingent from the Czech Republic alongside 2020 summer signings Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal.

The Latest: Hammers enter advanced talks…

Now, bringing a development, Football Insider claim that West Ham are in advanced talks to sign the player although, contrary to other reports, a deal is not yet done.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

To complete an agreement, GSB are said to be willing to pay over £20m – with negotiations progressing well behind the scenes.

Indeed, the fee is yet to be agreed upon completely with Spartak Moscow as well as the payment structure – but discussions are apparently at an advanced stage as West Ham aim to make a third Czech international signing after Soucek and Coufal.

The Verdict: Promising update…

Kral impressed in the Russian Premier League over 2020/2021, averaging as many interceptions per 90 (1.8) in midfield as Declan Rice did for West Ham last season (WhoScored).

Indeed, the 6 foot 1 defensive midfielder also managed to get forward on occasion – supplying five assists for his teammates and standing out as one of Spartak’s key players.

Rice missed a portion of West Ham’s run-in at the end of last campaign through injury and having a capable alternative like Kral may supply manager David Moyes with some much needed strength in depth.

Therefore, this update should come as a promising one for supporters as their side gear up for what should be a very interesting 2021/2022 campaign.

Windass says Bielsa won’t sign Bertrand

Not many managers would turn down a Champions League winner on a free transfer, but Dean Windass believes that Marcelo Bielsa would.

Ryan Bertrand won Europe’s elite competition with Chelsea nine years ago but is soon to be a free agent once his Southampton contract expires, having confirmed that he won’t be extending his deal.

The left-back has unsurprisingly attracted major interest from the Premier League, with both Arsenal, who failed in their attempts back in January, and Leicester both keen on signing the 31-year-old.

But with two of Leeds’ three left-backs in Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas both out of contract, Bielsa will no doubt be looking to provide back-up in that department.

Should those two leave Elland Road this summer, Dallas would be their recognised senior player in that position, and having already shown that he’s more than capable of playing further forward, it could force Bielsa to dip into the market.

But Windass told The Transfer Tavern that the Leeds boss will be looking for players in a lower age bracket than Bertrand:

“I don’t think Bielsa will go for a 31-year-old. 24 up to 28 he will be looking at.

“If he is available, he won’t be short of any offers because he’s been there seven or eight years because he’s a nice lad and very consistent.”

Journalist drops Spurs claim involving Sarri

According to Italian journalist Fabio Santini, speaking to Il Prosecco as relayed by Area Napoli and translated by Sport Witness, former Premier League boss Maurizio Sarri ‘could go to train in the Premier League with Tottenham’.

This big claim comes amid other reports that the favourites to succeed former boss Jose Mourinho on a permanent basis appear to be the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers.

Spurs touted as possible move for Sarri

Other reports have even mentioned Graham Potter and Scott Parker as outside managerial candidates over Sarri, so it seems to be a complete free-for-all when it comes to predicting Mourinho’s permanent successor.

Recently, other claims coming out of the continent suggested that Levy had approached the ex-Chelsea gaffer, but reporters close to the club have since come out to deny those reports (Evening Standard).

Now, another Italian reporter has claimed Sarri is indeed a candidate – citing his sources as proof.

“I have two news about Napoli,” he told Il Processo, via Area Napoli and Sport Witness.

“I’m starting from the bad one: Maurizio Sarri, much loved by the fans, will not land in Campania.

“According to my information, the coach from Figline Valdarno could go to train in the Premier League at Tottenham.”

Transfer Tavern take

A winner in both Italy and England, winning the Europa League with Chelsea and the Scudetto with Juventus, he has absolutely no shortage of credentials.

He was famed for his brand of attacking play, dubbed ‘Sarri ball’, and he has also been described as ‘extraordinary’ by Chelsea midfielder Jorginho (Football Italia).

However, given he was at the Chelsea helm, he could be a controversial appointment for Spurs supporters.

Nagelsmann, on the other hand, plays a similar style of football and has been lavished with praise by both the media and his players for his ‘fearless’ approach to management.

For this reason, we believe the German boss should be targeted above all others, even if Sarri is an intriguing candidate.

Preview: Norwich City XI vs Reading

Daniel Farke’s Norwich City side head into Saturday’s game knowing that a win will secure them the Championship title.

After a remarkable league campaign, the Canaries have already ensured that Premier League football will be returning to Carrow Road at the earliest opportunity following the club’s relegation from the top flight last season.

However, despite their guarantee of automatic promotion, the Championship table-toppers have not clinched the league title just yet, although a home win against Reading on Saturday would see Farke’s side over the line.

So, will the 44-year-old make any changes to his starting XI last time out against Queens Park Rangers? Here’s our predicted XI, along with the latest team and injury news…

With a number of players remaining sidelined due to either suspension or injury, with Dimitris Giannoulis serving the final match of his three-game ban and Sam Byram, Christoph Zimmermann, Ben Gibson and Lukas Rupp all being unavailable due to knocks, we expect Farke to make two changes from his starting XI against QPR.

Firstly, Pukki drops to the bench after having an unusually bad day in front of goal at Loftus Road, with 28-year-old Jordan Hugill being handed only his seventh start of the season in the Finland striker’s place.

The second change sees Cantwell, who much like Pukki was far from his best against Mark Warburton’s side, replaced by Przemyslaw Płacheta, after the Poland international was an unused substitute in the trip to QPR.

Aside from these alterations, the rest of the side should remain untouched, with young centre-back Andrew Omobamidele keeping his place in the starting XI as both of Farke’s other options in the position, Zimmermann and Gibson, continue to be ruled out.

Everton: Moshiri role in Godfrey deal revealed

Farhad Moshiri played a blinder in backing a permanent centre-back transfer last summer after Marcel Brands revealed the Everton owner’s role in Ben Godfrey’s move from Norwich City.

What’s the word?

In quotes shared by the Liverpool Echo, Brands has told the Toffees’ USA Live event that Godfrey became the club’s number one target after the intervention of Moshiri.

The defender sealed a £20m move to Goodison Park at the start of October and has proven to be a key player for Carlo Ancelotti, with minutes across the Italian’s backline in 29 of a possible 32 games in all competitions.

Everton were not initially targeting a centre-back but were forced to make a quick change to their end-of-window plans in September after Mason Holgate sustained a toe injury and Jarrad Branthwaite tore ligaments in his ankle.

The Blues were unsure whether to add depth to Ancelotti’s unit with a temporary or permanent solution, but the influence of Moshiri led to a full-time deal being struck with Norwich for Godfrey.

“He was on our list already for two years, and when I had the discussion this summer with Carlo, the Chairman and our owner, we had to decide if we were looking for a centre-back on loan or if we want to buy,” Brands said.

“Our owner preferred to do a permanent, so Ben Godfrey was the first one on our list – and I think we did our homework well. He’s a great character, great athlete. He really adapted quickly to the level and to the club. I think the fans loved him from the beginning and that’s a good thing to see.”

A blinder from Moshiri

While Everton may not have been sure whether to explore a loan deal or make a permanent centre-back signing last year before Moshiri stepped in, the Blues chief certainly played a blinder by backing a full-time deal being struck.

Everton were left in an uncomfortable situation in the summer 2019 market when Marco Silva sought to sign Kurt Zouma at the end of his season-long loan spell from Chelsea, having seen the Frenchman impress in royal blue but hold no option to retain him long-term.

Zouma eventually returned to Stamford Bridge after the southwest London natives slapped a minimum £30m asking price on the 26-year-old, and he has featured in 28 Premier League games last term and 19 so far this season.

The Toffees would have rued being in the same position with Godfrey had they only signed the centre-back on loan from Norwich, having seen the 23-year-old establish himself as a key part of Ancelotti’s defence.

Godfrey has covered at left-back when Lucas Digne has been injured, featured occasionally at right-back and played regularly at centre-half over his 29 outings in all competitions since his move.

The England under-21 international’s efforts reportedly led Tottenham Hotspur to launch an inquiry into why they passed on his potential availability, while many Everton supporters often laud the defender who Ancelotti has hailed as being “fantastic” and “tactically intelligent”.

With the manager also considering Godfrey to be the best of his current centre-back options and the one with the most potential, the Italian seemingly owes a lot of gratitude to Moshiri for backing Everton to make a permanent move for the 23-year-old last year.

Villa could sign the next Grealish in David Brooks

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith must urge the club to make a summer transfer move for David Brooks, amid Lee Hendrie’s verdict on the Bournemouth star.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months have suggested that the Villa boss is keen on landing the Wales international and offering him a return back to Premier League football following the Cherries’ relegation last season.

Former Villa ace Hendrie has now revealed that he’s a “big fan” of the versatile midfielder, and insisted that the 23-year-old could be a great player for Smith.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “I’m a big fan of David Brooks. I’ve seen a fair bit of him this season and he’s an absolute talent, he really is. He’s a young man with bags of ability and I think if he comes into Villa, I think he’d be a great addition.

“He reminds me of Jack (Grealish). He’s very slight, he’s very mobile and, again, he’s another player that could set the Prem on fire if he’s given a chance.”

Get it done

In the £55,000-a-week earning Brooks, Smith would be getting someone who is able to play both in the number ten role and out wide, with the Welshman’s low centre of gravity and quick turn of pace something to really change the game – his former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe hailed him as someone who “turns well with the ball” and has “creative flair”.

This season has seen him bag four goals and provide a further five assists, and it’s no wonder that Chris Wilder, his former manager at Sheffield United, declared him a “match-winner” and someone he wanted to bring back in October last year.

Brooks could offer Villa that extra bit of dynamism going forward, with Howe also hailing his “creative flair” and “non-stop energy”.

It’s a move that Villa should be targeting this summer, with Hendrie’s glowing verdict another reason why the Midlands club would be foolish to pass him up.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has delivered a major transfer update on Aston Villa…

Villa suffer Grealish injury blow for NUFC

Aston Villa have suffered a major blow ahead of their Premier League clash against Newcastle on Friday night, with Jack Grealish once again ruled out of action.

The England international has missed the last four Premier League games for Villa after picking up a lower leg injury last month, with the club picking up just four points in those matches in his absence.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against the Magpies, Villa boss Dean Smith said: “Jack has been making really good progress and we are happy at where he’s at but, unfortunately, he won’t make it (Friday’s game).

“He has been ill this week so he’s been off for a couple of days as well, but we’re hopeful for the Tottenham game now, that’s for sure. Jack is still in and around the training ground. He takes part in the meetings. He’s got a voice and an opinion, which is good.”

Given how badly have Villa struggled without him in terms of their results, Smith will no doubt be gutted that the 25-year-old will once again be missing from first team action.

Grealish has been one of the shining lights of what has been an impressive Premier League campaign for Villa, scoring six goals and providing 12 assists.

It’s no surprise that, in the games that he has missed, Villa have lacked creativity and an eye for goal, finding the back of the net just twice in his absence.

The rest of his teammates will have to try and step up once more when they visit St James’ Park to take on Newcastle on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Villa could land a new Tyrone Mings in this ace…

Predicted Manchester City XI vs Everton

Manchester City’s hopes of completing a historic quadruple are still alive as they prepare to face Everton in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday evening.

Pep Guardiola’s side travel to Goodison Park hoping to secure a place at Wembley for the semi-finals with a win against Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees.

The Merseyside outfit have suffered back-to-back losses against Chelsea and Burnley recently, whilst the Citizens are on an unbelievable run which has seen them win 24 of their last 25 games in all competitions, which included a 3-1 triumph at Goodison Park in February.

With all of his players back fit, Guardiola is likely to rotate from the side which beat Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek, although he will still obviously want a strong side out to continue City’s impressive form in the FA Cup in recent years.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects the manager to line his side up on Saturday, with five changes from the side which started in Hungary…

Although Zack Steffen featured in earlier rounds, it seems likely that Ederson will keep his place in goal ahead of the American for a game of this importance for City.

There are two changes in defence, as Oleksandr Zinchenko comes in for Kyle Walker, with Joao Cancelo moving to right-back after featuring on the left in midweek. John Stones is handed a rest with Aymeric Laporte replacing him at centre-back alongside Ruben Dias.

Fernandinho has shown his qualities in recent months and deserves a start ahead of Rodri in midfield, where he is partnered by Ilkay Gundogan.

Riyad Mahrez starred on City’s last trip to Goodison Park so he keeps his place on the right-hand side, with Bernardo Silva, who reportedly earns £150,000 per week at City, dropping out to welcome Raheem Sterling back in on the left.

Finally, Gabriel Jesus replaces Phil Foden and offers City a more natural centre-forward option up front, although the Brazilian has the added pressure of a fit Sergio Aguero waiting in the wings to replace him, so hopefully he can start scoring goals on a more regular basis.
